  • Northeast has the potential to become India’s growth engine, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 23 while asserting that peace has now been established in the region.Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Manipur Water Supply Project , through video conferencing, the Prime Minister highlighted that modern infrastructure is being built to improve connectivity. India’s Northeast, in a way, is the gateway to our ancient cultural relationships with East Asia and the future of trade, travel and tourism. In The Big Picture we will analyse the growth potential of northeast India.

Summary:::::::: The N-E India is the a special region of the country. It's a gateway to our relations with east and S-E Asia. The specificity of the region can be attributed to many reasons, some are
1)one of the greenest part of the country and biodiversity hotspots of the world. Represens 25% of the country's forest coverage.( Forest coverage in some states is too high Viz .Mizoram-85%,AP-79%, Nagaland-75%.)
    2) Represents 8% of the territory of the country. Home to large number of ethnic communities. Diverse culture.
The main requirements of the region are 1) geographical connectivity) employment 3) sense of political power.
There has been a sense of isolation owing to loss of identity and loss of geographical connectivity with the rest of the country, especially, post-partition.
As loss of connectivity lead to deepening of identity crisis, which in turn posed threat to Law and order of region. We need to overcome this. The government plan to connect all the capital cities of the region is good move in this direction.
Low industrial penetration is other reason for underdevelopment. Which can attributed to mainly two reasons: 1) low private investment 2) high transaction cost owing to security issues. The Bru- Reang settlement and ongoing Naga peace process are welcoming steps in this regard. Once security issue is taken care , investment flows.
But rather than following industrial model of development , here we must focus on natural resource based activity for employment. Bamboo and rubber can be harnessed for this. Changing the taxonomy and the classification of Bamboo as grass and national bamboo mission are good steps in this regard
Because of higher literacy and better English speaking skill of the younger generation, the service based activity like BPO can be future prospects. But along with this the ecological aspect must be taken care of, especially considering Sharp decline in the forest cover in the states of AP, Nagaland, Mizoram as per India state of forest report 2019.
Finally better, close relationship with Bangladesh is crucial for overall development of the region and also for achieving strategic goals of Act East policy. Safeguarding the ethnic aspirations of the people and giving them a sense of political power are indispensable for long term solution. We have to look at From larger perspective and must follow integrated approach, then only we can harness the potentiality the region offers for growth.

Northeast people are very proud people & perhaps more patriotic than us.somehow, they have been neglected in the past whatever the reason may be.We only think northeast more in terms of geopolitical importance but never actually integrated with them.I think time has now come really to integrate with them socially & culturally insuring better wellbeing of the people as a whole. Then only better connectivity can be possible.

Iam from Kerala and I love the diverse north-eastern culture which is in tandem with nature. All Indians should learn good sustainable community practices from them and appreciate their efforts during the time of struggle for Independence.
I believe that in the future, the world will value their way of life and the quality value added products they offer which are 100% natural.
Post COVID global administration should look into these realities while making long-term policies by enabling regional self-reliance and fostering mutual respect and commitment in this small world.

    Key point
    - Integrated approach required to address the issues such as employment opportunity and innovation need to attain potential of North East region as Boombu plant, organic farming and many sector.
-Need of hour to maintain and encourage their identity with mainland.
-Good realationship with Bangladesh which help to development and connectivity of NE region with mainland.
-NE rich with river as Brahmaputra emphasise irrigation project with proper Water management and flood management.
    Many steps and project are
already taken by the govt. To development and growth. Outcome of it's very positive.
