      The way I learned this game was also that all non-face cards were worth 5. We also played that Ace was worth 5 if played low and 15 if played high or in set.

    I have always played that you have to discard in order to go out. And if you float then you pick up a card your next go so that you can discard.

    Love this tutorial :) needed the refresher! And I'm enjoying the variant rules in the comments here. One I remember growing up with that I loved is that if you only take the top card from the discard pile, then you're not required to play it. It adds some intrigue to what your opponent is trying to do, so it affects your discard strategy a bit more. You can also fake people out ;). Oh also, does anyone else play Q♠️=40pts? It gets REAL. Thanks for the vid!

    • @Rulies
      @Rulies  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      There are many different rule variations.
      I prefer this way, it seems to be the most common and I think it adds depth. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
      But streamlining the scoring of numbered cards into 5 points each is a pretty common variation. It makes things easier and If you prefer that, go for it! Just make sure everyone at the table is clear before you start.
      Thanks for commenting! I love hearing about how people play things different.

    • @kgpiper44
      @kgpiper44 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I played similar... easier to score that way... but I played Ace-two-three the Ace = 5 points, Queen-King-Ace, Ace=15 points... 3 or more ACES are 15 each. Someone I played with this weekend played Ace low = 5 points, QKAce = 10 points, and 3 or more ACES at 15 each. House rules I guess.

    If there are cards in the discard pile that somebody can call Rummy on and they do that at the same time as the next player is about to pick up cards who is right then? Would the person that yelled rummy get to take those cards or the person whose turn it was if their hand was already on the cards? And the person whose turn it was was not even picking up the cards for the rummy in the pile they were just picking up cards that they were going to use in the discard pile.
    I know that is a little confusing basically two things happened at the exact same time the person whose turn it was to go lay their hands down to pick up the discard pile at the same time someone else yelled rummy. So who would be the one to get the cards?

  • @treyfridley3101
    @treyfridley3101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If there is a meld in the discard pile can the player who calls rummy select only the cards to make the meld or would they have to take all the cards between three card meld?

    • @Rulies
      @Rulies  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great question Trey. There are people out there that play both ways. It's sort of an optional rule to play how you want.
      But, what I suggest, is that you can only "call rummy" on the card that was just discarded. If you do you can only take that one card and immediately use it.
      That's how I play because I feel that it starts to get too crazy otherwise. That's just my opinion though! I hope it helps.

    • @slendersage8728
      @slendersage8728 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know this comment is from a year ago but I had to reply lol. In my family there were two types of calling rummy... one, the way he described, where someone laid a card while not paying attention and someone else snatched it up. Then there was “Rummy in the pile.” Anyone could state that there was a rummy in the pile. If you wanted it, you could go for it, but yes, you pick up everything in between. But SOMETIMES, if you were being a brat, you’d call rummy in the pile, to draw people’s attention to it, but then refuse to pick it up. The hope is that once you’ve pointed it out, someone will be tempted to grab it. Sure, they’ll get a meld out of it, but they may also now have 5,000 extra cards in their hand. And you may be about to go out...

      @@slendersage8728 this is excatly what I was surfing the comments for! My friend and I were playing tonight and I called rummy in the pile off her meld. She didn't think you could do that.
      Obviously Rummy rules are different for everyone and a discussion needs to be had before starting the game to establish them!

    When you lay off cards for the other player, say the ace or five of diamonds, how do they count towards your final score?

    • @Rulies
      @Rulies  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good Question Mallorie! You gain points for your card only, and it’s based on the type of meld that you laid off against. So if you laid off an ace as against your opponents set, you would get 15 point. Does that make sense?

    For example in a 2 player game, once laid off cards make a run of 3 or more, does it become a new run that the other player can lay off onto?
    Ex:
    Player A: 7,8,9 of hearts
    Player B: lays off 10, J and then lays off the Q on another turn
    Can Player A now lay off a K and A of hearts?
    Thanks!

    • @Rulies
      @Rulies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sophie, that’s very good question! !
      1. Either player can continue to lay off and continue the run. They wouldn’t need to wait for there to be three making it a new run.
      So in your example, after player B played a 10 & J, either could then play a Q and K.
      2. Just a reminder, in this version of Rummy an Ace is always low so wouldn’t follow the K.. unless you have special house rules!

  • @kgpiper44
    @kgpiper44 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be clear, a game is NOT ended on a "Rummy". If a person discards a last card in-in hand, and that card is a meld card, and "Rummy" is called, play continues until someone "legit" goes out. Is that about right?

    • @Rulies
      @Rulies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quick_Wit_, There ARE versions of this game with stricter requirements for going out. But in this version, the game ends as soon as there is a player with no cards in hand. That includes calling rummy too!

    I'll have to review this a few times, Thanks. What is floating?

    • @Rulies
      @Rulies  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question Ray! Floating is in optional rule some people use to make the game more difficult.
      In the standard version of Rummy 500 (covered in this video) a player goes out when they no longer have any cards in hand.
      Instead, you can play that a player can only go out by discarding their last card. So, if player has melded all their cards and has no card in hand, they would be still in the game (because they didn't discard) and are said to be floating. Hope that helps!
