  • In this video, I discuss and demonstrate five of my favourite ways of correcting the breathy singing voice. (Please note: Today's tips are based on speech. These can be very effective solutions, with one caveat: The singer needs to also have a healthy speaking technique.) Please stay tuned for five more practical solutions for breathiness.

      nein, it's most likely you hearing your inner voice. which isn't produced to the outer voice yet.
      cover your ears with your hands, and sing a tone. You'll still hear it. Why? because sound resonate through objects, your body is that object.
      when you sing, you're hearing the inner more than the outer. this is why you see people with only 1 headphone over their ears. they want to hear inner and outer to make sure it's matched up correctly.
      this is why you sound so good. and you do sound like that! that's real. it's just, when that voice exit the body, it isn't as strong. and the recording is picking up correctly.
      in time, you'll sound good. you should by now, since this was 5 months ago.

    I am so grateful for this video. I've been practising singing for a very long time, but I've never been really happy with my voice. A few months ago I realized that my biggest problem was that I was singing with too much air. But I still didn't know how to control the breathiness, because I was just not feeling it. So a few hours ago I found this video, and tried to give your advices a go, and holy crap, for the time in my life I feel like I've made a huge step forward. I just tried to sound like my "speaking voice" while singing, and suddenly it feels like my pitch is way more on point than ever before. Thank you!

    ma'am your videos have really helped me sing healthier and better, my tone has already improved so surprisingly much and I feel a LOT more confident in performing. singing breathy has always been the root of all my vocal troubles; getting light-headed while singing full songs, limits in my range, a 'colourless' timbre. but I realised just how shockingly rich my sound can be. thank you so much, I wish I lived where you were so you could be my vocal teacher! you're exceptional!

  • @aznbryanc

    Great video! I think it's very important to mention that one prerequisite for performing speak singing and speaking and anything related to "singing like you speak" is that one's speaking voice is not full of constriction/strain. There are a lot of students who speak on consonants instead of vowels or tense up their jaw and neck, who I think need to reprogram themselves to be more focused on the vowels and feeling of continual release in speech before they can make the most of transferring the benefits of a speech coordination to their singing.
    Speak singing is one of my favorite ways to learn how my voice needs to feel when singing some difficult songs!

      Great points! It's critical that our speaking technique is also healthy, especially if we're going to use speech to help build the singing voice.

    What if your speaking voice is breathy?

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  6 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      If you have a breathy speaking voice, the same underlying causes will also be present. There's an imbalance with the aeromechanical aspects of how you use your voice. You may not be using your breath properly, which makes your glottal closure mechanism less likely to 'synergize' with the breath. Exercises like energized humming and glottal strokes ("every orange") may help you connect the breath and the vocal effort more.

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Usually, when female voices start getting breathy (VERY commonly around G5), it's due to a bit of squeezing, imbalances in resonance (not making the necessary adjustments to the vowel), poor management of the breath (losing proper 'support' where/when it's most critical), and psychological factors (e.g., lack of trust in the voice, fear, not liking the sounds that we're making, etc.). What happens when you sing scales through a straw, which is placed about an inch into a glass of water? Do you experience the same things? I have a video on head voice that offers three exercises. The V exercise is similar to the straw, but I find that the V is often more effective at helping singers find the right engagement of their 'support' system: th-cam.com/video/kqsYWMpjcNI/w-d-xo.html Let me know if any of this helps.

      this comment perfectly described me LOL (it was exactly after recording myself sing once upon a december and defying gravity a few years ago that I realized) . I've started taking voice lessons now + watching TH-cam videos so I really really hope I can improve :(

      @@Zizotron I think its complex because it sounds soft and in some songs breathiness works really well (like lullabies or indie music). Any advice in how to help repair it? After going to therapy I haven’t been screaming or yelling as much. In fact I plan to avoid it all together from now on. Any suggestions and working towards repairing my voice? Also I’m 31 years old and my voice is changed a lot since my 20s and after having a child. It’s completely different as far as where my break is.

This one might help: th-cam.com/video/kqsYWMpjcNI/w-d-xo.html (the V-slide exercise is really good for breath management and keeping the throat 'open' as pitch ascends) and this one has an exercise for glottal compression: th-cam.com/video/ANRrgR8632w/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps.
