    If you are introverted and quiet when speaking, does it cause your singing voice to be quite airy? As mine is

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +134

      Not always but I have found that introverts or people who consider themselves to be shy can feel uncomfortable projecting even just using their speaking voice. I tell my students that it's okay for their voice to "take up space" and consider what it is about "being heard" or projecting that makes them feel so uncomfortable. Often it's from an experience in their past or a belief they're holding onto. I also check with them that a stronger sound it what they would like - you don't want to force something on someone that doesn't feel natural if they'd rather not sound like that.

    This is exactly what my in person vocal coach taught me, just in a slightly different way. Finding different methods is something that's been helpful to me. One of the biggest things my tutor told me that has helped with everything is to suspend judgement of yourself. You're going to sound terrible for a while, but the whole point of learning is to improve over time. Judging yourself harshly is going to impact your motivation to continue. Rather than thinking 'I can't do this', realize you just can't do it YET.

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  ปีที่แล้ว

      I love that you shared your reflections from your coach about suspending judgement. YES! We are LEARNING and should give ourselves compassion and patience through this time just like if we were to pick up the trumpet or violin. The beginning phase can feel so uncomfortable but YET is one of my favourite words to use with students too. :)

    When I sing to a mic, you can hear my breathing, idk how to fix it? And when I try to sing loud and high, my voice is weak, it kinda breaks and it goes off note. But when I sing more quiet, my singing is much better.

    • @smruthiathreya1728
      @smruthiathreya1728 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      ItsMe running out of breath and being breathy are almost two different things. When you’re breathy, it means that your voice is raspy. I suggest watching videos that help you control your breath support, which also helps a vibrato. Getting better breath support helps strengthen your voice as well :)

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your voice is breathy because you are letting too much air escape when you sing. Its a common problem some people have, there are times I have an issue with it. How to get past it? The best advice I ever got when dealing with it is if the volume of the voice when you sing is lower than when you talk bring the singing voice up to the same volume as your talking voice.
      If you don't talk with a low breathy voice then you shouldn't be singing that way either.
      Singing is really about balance and control, if any of those two factors waver you run into problems. There are even times when I don't like the clean voice on a certain song and I will compress and distort it to sound better and that does work.
      When you breathe in your stomach should fill with air and should tighten when you go to sing a line. Pay attention to your breathing and you should start to notice a difference. But most singers I hear just have a problem with lowering their voice to sing which in turn sounds weak and airy. I even do it and can tell when I have to sing a line over again due to it being too weak.
      Hope that helps, Good luck.

    • @SingBetterIn3Days
      @SingBetterIn3Days 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@evilcowboy sometimes it's also any issue with airflow. You are talking about glottal resistance, the air escaping, which totally happens, often I find the easiest solution is improving airflow. This is something that I help the singers that I work with all the time!

Sometimes when I try to sing there is that vocal ‘fry-y’ feeling, it’s sort of a ‘buzz’ or your voice isn’t as clear or that feeling where you ‘lost’ your voice (and feel the need to clear it) because it sounds really deep or weird. I also have a problem where my singing is breathy and I tend to lose a lot of air! I really sincerely apologize for the late response 😔. As I did get a little out of singing, been feeling a bit unmotivated and that my breathy singing skills aren’t really good. Thank you so much!

    Hi Kimberley, This is really useful, thank you! I'm getting back into singing after several years away from it. My voice is stronger when I sing lower, it's strong-ish on high notes but my mid range falls apart and breaks terribly! Are these techniques sufficient, or is there anything else you could advise? Thank you :)

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sarah, thanks for your question lovely! Oh the dreaded middle. Well the first thing is to make sure your support is changing depending on how high and how strong you're singing. This video should give you some insight into that: th-cam.com/video/f05QSZIvoXk/w-d-xo.html
      As we're moving up higher, anchoring can be a blessing too. Here's a video I did on one type of anchoring: th-cam.com/video/mNAWCbWPgTE/w-d-xo.html
      And the middle is notorious for being problematic with the way we naturally pronounce our vowels, so we often need to modify them slightly to get the sound, ease and stability we want. I have a paid studio all about this here: thatsweetroar.com/vowel-shaping-studio
      Hope that helps!

    • @courtneygrier2015
      @courtneygrier2015 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel you on that! I cannot go very low but the lower part of my range is pretty solid. I have a great high range, being a soprano. However my middle range, it's easy for me to feel out of breath and even feel nauseous singing midrange and trying to compensate for the breathiness by singing louder which makes it worse and more tired.
      I can hit high Cs and higher all day but recording a song at mid or mezzo range is a nightmare. 😪

      Being introverted is one of the worst things to be when trying to sing. I am too and to get past it I keep telling myself "anyone who criticizes I will ask them to sing it better." No takers and they usually shut up quick, fast and in a hurry.
      People like to critique others but in the grand scheme of it most of them couldn't sing their way out of a paper bag. If you can hold tune then you are already ahead of most people.
      Most folks just worry too much about what others might think, like the very people who criticize has never done anything you can make fun of them for. We all do embarrassing things, its just a matter of getting past that embarrassment to do the things you want to be capable of doing.
      Basically I am telling you in a very polite way to say to yourself and others "fuck it".

    I have no clue what I am doing when I sing, I was born tonedeaf too. I mean I just sing and emote the best I can, but I do think my song/vocal music covers on TH-cam are a bit pitchy when I change notes? The music is also in the same key as the artist sang it in. I mean bringing the song down might be better yet sometimes the song does not sound the same. Truth is, I really have no clue what pitch I am even aiming for, I just sing and try to match what sounds good enough. Yet, I had 20+ bands ask me to sing for them and do music with their bands? I am so confused. I want to be as as good as I can be. I mean that airy sound seems to be spooky and sound flat, so can that work for some songs or not? These musical math rules are supposed to be followed right? My music is indie/rock/punk/metal hard edged stuff so what do I need to do as a singer?

      Hi Denis, thanks for your comment! The aim is to connect the vocal cords in a more natural way but yes you should feel your belly move in response to your use of breath. The soft palate doesn't necessarily have to lift, but if it's creating the sound you want without creating a stretch on the roof of your mouth or tongue tension - great!

    Hey sorry to bother I have a question.Im 17 and when I sing it sounds very dull sometimes breathy as well, it feels like maybe out of tune idk but when I sing with volume its really bad it sounds too bad but when I sing with less volume it sounds alright but problem is its not audible in a recording please help

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say that you'll want to explore the idea of support Adish. It sounds like you're maybe holding the air back at your throat when you're singing loud rather than controlling the release of your diaphragm muscle. I have a whole playlist here that should help with breathing in without tension (also very important) and then controlling that exhale in the right way: th-cam.com/video/833iGdYytXI/w-d-xo.html
      Hope that helps! :)

    My voice always sounds like there’s barely any of the actual sound but mostly just breath. Like it always takes a few seconds before the sound comes out because the breath is just too much. Sometimes it’s like I’m whispering but I’m not trying to

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jennifer, it might be that you need a little more control/support/air pressure when you sing. Perhaps take a look at this video and try it out? thatsweetroar.com/videos/what-should-vocal-breath-support-feel-like :)

      It sounds like your cords aren't completely coming together which could be an issue with your onset lovely (the way you start the first note - yours will be breath first or with a little H sound at the beginning). x

      I'm so sorry to hear that. I could have been that the vocal cords were a little swollen (coughs especially can cause swelling). Has it gone away now or are you still experiencing this? If so, what happens if you try to talk like a cartoon character for example?

      I'm so sorry you feel that way Momo but I completely understand. Sharing our voice and being heard can feel very vulnerable. Some of my students have practiced on an empty road, in a park, in a car or put pillows up inside a closet to feel safe when practicing.

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Marilyn, in my experience classical singers require more of their air capacity when they sing and yes asthma can make this very challenging. I think it's probably best to talk to your doctor about the possibilities.

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds more like strain and you might want to work on your technique in a few ways Hadephobe.
      As you go higher you'll want to add anchoring (this video is one example of this: thatsweetroar.com/videos/how-to-sing-high-or-powerful-notes-without-throat-tension-strain-pushing)
      And make sure you're using your breath differently IF you're adding intensity or power (Part 2 in this series: thatsweetroar.com/videos/getcha-belt-on-series)
      And check that your tongue isn't adding tension to try to push the sound out for you: thatsweetroar.com/videos/how-to-relax-tongue-release-tension-singing

    Only happens in higher voice like my base is strong af but higher voice sounds like a weird cartoon with whispers.

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly, this is so normal and you are not alone. We don't tend to use our voice up high day to day, so we are more hesitant to make those sounds (which is why it can be breathy). I usually ask students to play with some higher sounds like sirens or cartoon character voices in order to feel what it's like to make higher sounds that aren't breathy (when their cords are connecting more organically) but it's important that you're in a safe, judgement-free place to do that. x

    • @thatsweetroar
      @thatsweetroar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Priyanshi, don't worry, it is normal to get breathier as you get to your lowest notes. Everyone has a point where they can no longer sing with clarity at the bottom of their range. If you think it ISN'T the bottom of your range, try to add a G sound before the vowel you're singing (for example: GAH or GEE) to help your cords connect a little better. x
