Fix an Unresponsive Keyboard Switch [No Compressed Air]

  • Hi, this is an easy tutorial on how to fix your Mechanical switches if they don't work or are unresponsive. All you need to do is take the keypads off of the affected Unresponsive Mechanical Switches and put rubbing alcohol 70% or higher which I recommend onto the unresponsive Mechanical Switches. Make sure the alcohol soaks into them really well and then you need to click vigorously on the unresponsive Mechanical Switches as well as flick them to make sure any debris will get dislodged from the unresponsive Mechanical Switch's mechanism. Let it dry for a minimum of 20 minutes to be safe but you can use a hairdryer to make the process faster but not too hot, you dont want it to melt. After all that, you can plug in your Mechanical Keyboard and will notice that you have fixed it!
    Have fun playing your games again, and writing essays... osu!
    Hopefully this worked for you. If you want more content, make sure to like and subscribe and hit the bell.
    bye.

    i recommend waiting atleast 12 hours, if not you might short your keys and you will have to replace them.

      But cant u just a hairdryer

    • @YoussGm
      @YoussGm  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Technically you can, not too hot though. But even then it might take time to evaporate completely.
      I just pinned the comment so that I wouldn't be liable if anyone's keyboard explodes or something.

      @mindax8823 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most keyboard keys are quite resistant anyway, so even if they don't respond after you let them dry for a couple of hours, just wait and let it dry completely over 24hours and it should be fixed and clean (just a small note I thought I should add)

    • @Mitix132
      @Mitix132 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      why would you even wait this long? he used 70% rubbing alcohol which dries in seconds.

    • @YoussGm
      @YoussGm  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since the alcohol enters inside the switch, it doesnt have enough airflow to make it dry at the same speed as it would just on an open surface.

    Just got my new keyboard few days back and few of the switches were kinda delayed registering the input. Thought I need to return it to the seller, but now they're working! Thank you very much for your tutorial! I'll do this first before replacing new switches if the others facing the same issue.

    Thank you for this vid! It worked! Usually don't comment on youtube but wanted to thank op and let others know. My "w" key began to have problems registering for 2 weeks and eventually stopped working while in the middle of an fps game. Tried other methods but nothing worked; unplugged and re-plugged usb, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, cleaned out the keyboard, applied compressed air and rapid clicking, but no tricks seemed to work until I found this video. Followed the tutorial and then let it dry for 30min and now it works perfectly. Great tutorial!

    That almost seems like a damaged switch leaf (the gold part inside). That will need replaced to fully fix. If it was dirty, doing this removes any lubrication in the switch, so be mindful of that. ALCOHOL is non-conductive, so you only need to wait about 2 mins for it to dry, unless you REALLY soaked it.
    A better alternative for cleaning these would be Electrical Contact Cleaner such as BW100. It is non-conductive, non-flammable, non-toxic, and removes corrosion, dirt, grime, and other nasties that prevent an electrical connection from working as intended. It also dries in a few seconds. (Use in a well-ventilated room, however, because BW100 uses perfluoro heptane; which is a fluorinated precursor to gasoline and can make you feel a tiny bit funny!)

    This actually worked!! Thanks a plenty!! The 'M' key and the left arrow key on my CoolerMaster CK530 gave me a headache for months.. Previously, I had to deliberately and consciously press the 'M' key and I had to smash on the left arrow key for them to register any response.. It got really bad that I even considered opening and soldering-in some new switches..
    I left it to dry for 30 minutes and I used a dryer while pressing those keys repeatedly, and it actually worked..

    Would you recommend doing this on a laptop? My HP OMEN 17 has a shallow mechanical keyboard with shorter circle-shaped switches that seem to have less openings for the alcohol to get in than your keys do. I'm just worried about shorting some more serious components beneath the keyboard.

    • @YoussGm
      @YoussGm  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If some of your keyboard switches do have issues with responsiveness, then you could definitely do this.
      However, i would use a higher percentage alcohol, like 99% just so there would be no risk of corrosion, and alcohol isnt conductive. Theres not much risk of shorting, more of a risk of corrosion (no risk with 100% alcohol).
      Also make sure you shutdown your laptop and unplug it from power just to be safe.
      Edit: if your laptop is still under warranty check with HP, you might get free laptop or something.

    • @YoussGm
      @YoussGm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It could probably be fixed with these instructions, as there may be dust between the contacts so a harder press would make it work.
      It won't hurt to try cleaning it with alcohol.

      40% alcohol would work just fine but I would let it dry overnight just in case, to let all the water evaporate. Also keep it somewhere warm like next to a heater but not so close that it melts.

      Do not use hydrogen peroxide. Its basically 97% water with the rest being h2o2 so no. It would be as if you're using water.
      Edit: technically water/ hydrogen peroxide would work but I'd let it dry for at least a week to be safe. You also risk corrosion since it doesnt dry fast.

      So the problem here is not actually with the switch since you tested with other ones.
