    Bless her heart, his wife...a keeper. She’s smart enough to know the therapeutic (mental, emotional, intellectual, morale) of the project for her husband - which is so good for the marriage. I’m sure that he has invested in her dreams as well. Lessons for all of us.

    Kudos to Rans using the extruded components on the leading and trailing edges, totally beats forming the leading edge from a flat sheet!

    Well done Fred 😎 , great to see that you’ve been creative in your approach and that you’ve planned out in advance how you’ll proceed so that it makes the build journey as easy as possible for you.
    Thank you Bryan for bringing such examples as Fred’s build to inspire us all 😉

    This is my current dream aircraft. with a 915. Good cruse height and speed and range so it can travel and modability to help its already very acceptable stol performance.

    If I ever get the chance I will build the S20 Raven. I love the 21 but with the Raven you get to build with metal but you also get to cover the wings with fabric. It too being a great plane doesn't hurt either.

    Great interview, especially the great options he looked at first.
    Didn't hear him evaluate a Viking engine option, would be nice to hear his engine evaluations including Viking.

    ".... loving, supportive wife ..." I turn and look at mine, she's already shaking her head. 😂🤣😂 I've got a whole barn and shop full of junk that needs to be fixed and sold first anyway. :) Great video, Bryan - thanks for sharing!
    Looks like a nice, strong wing design there! Impressive.
    I also thought you recorded this last summer ... then I read "Tallahassee" in the description - ahh, that explains it! There isn't a green leaf within 700 miles of where I'm at right now. I need to move south ... 😂

    Ok I'm hooked I'll follow you while I'm on the Appalachian trail, I am going to build a plane after I hike the trail. Not made a commitment but I have some wants.
    Tail wheel, Tandem seating, minimum of 140 horsepower, if Just aircraft made the Super Stol in Tandem I'd be building that but I have always been leaning toward the Rans S7 or Carbon Cub, safe travels to you.

      Experimental Aircraft Channel Love the channel and was wondering if you could make a video of a newer S7. There are no recent videos of any S7 builds. The plane had few updates over the years and I would love to see something more recent about the S7 as I’m trying to decide between the Rans models . Thanks and keep the videos coming

    I’m not sure if your followers know how strong those forward “D” spars are. Helicopter rotor blades get 80% of their strength from this design and after seeing this Rans aircraft I have a new found respect for the Rans. I’m not sure if I agree with his decision not to prime the inner mating surfaces because after punching the aluminum the corrosion prevention is no longer there. He may lose perspective customers because there is no primer protection. His wife is a god send!! I know my wife would look at me and respond! Hell No! Great video content. We rarely get to see a build in process with a customer so intertwined with their build affecting their life so dramatically. Eat, drink, sleep and poop airplane!! Love it. Love it!!

    • @JustPlaneChris
      @JustPlaneChris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really is a cool design! On the corrosion protection, 6061 gets its resistance from the composition of alloys itself, rather than an alclad coating (like the 2024 used in the Vans planes). So, punching holes in it doesn't affect the corrosion resistance. But as you say, everyone has an opinion on priming. It's often referred to as "primer wars" in the forums. :)

    • @MrWATCHthisWAY
      @MrWATCHthisWAY 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Boultinghouse - I’m more interested in the composition on the pull rivets. Theres a dissimilar metal arrangement starting with the steel stem, the 2024 rivet itself then sandwiching the mating materials. I would prefer coating the river holes in a primer coating prior to pulling. All metals and alloys will corrode or rust especially when dissimilarities are introduced even with protective coatings the idea is to slowdown the process as much as possible. My comment is based on if given a choice between two aircraft, with or without protection I’m going for the protected one. Fred clearly doesn’t want to have chemicals in or near his home and I can understand his choice but he could limit this by dipping instead of spraying. That’s what I would recommend for a solution.

    • @brent1041
      @brent1041 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Paul Lafferty I haven’t looked to be sure but I don’t think the rivets are made of an alloy that will cause problems. Randy is smart enough to think about that and both of the demo planes don’t have any corrosion protection applied.

    Florida: Hot & Damp ( a lot of the year )and bare aluminum ?..... no Chromate ?....... ah I see the issue, not a good thing to spray in the kitchen or on the house and deck.
    JUST KIDDIN' I'm sure it will be fine.

    A bit off topic but how do Americans manage to have such big houses, especially when they have a very big annual tax levy indexed to the capital gain. Never understood that yet I see these big houses all the time. Either wages are massive or houses must be dirt cheap I guess. Seems to me if you got ill, the compounding tax liability could force repossession by the state so why don't people buy small houses... I would like to move to America just so I can own some guns I can actually keep at home but the property tax I read about would mean I could never make a profit and as such I would be buying a liability rather than an asset. Big houses, big cars, planes and boats in the triple garage as a common place.. How?

    • @ExperimentalAircraftChannel
      @ExperimentalAircraftChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is actually a very good QUESTION. But... I do not have the answer. You do not pay "capital gains" on your house every year. You do pay a property tax. And insurance. etc. It does seem there are quite a few that are able to afford the more pricey planes out there. But... this is also why I have started this channel to showcase to everyone all the options that are available. Both the high end and low end. Example... there are MANY "plans built" designs available to you so if you wanted to REALLY save money and had the time you CAN build an airplane just from the materials you source and by etc. This is literally building an airplane for "pennies on the dollar." Something to consider if you have the patience and time. Thank You for watching!

      Paul, I’ve lived in both Europe (UK) and in North America (Canada), so not quiet the US but what I can say is that if you live outside of the large American cities, you can typically find property much more cheaply than in Western Europe, in comparison to one’s disposable income.
      You can also build a home for much less if you’re in an area where there aren’t lots of regulations and restrictions.
      America is a still a very open place when it comes to what you can achieve and it really differs from state to state or more aptly, from region to region.
      Other countries could learn - and do - from how the US allows its people freedom to chart their own lives as they best see fit.
      It’s just one way to approach governance and it works well in my opinion, if one is willing and able to take on a lot of the responsibilities which in other countries citizens defer to their governments.
      I can also add that Americans work extremely hard for what they earn. In England I had 25 vacation days annually automatically when I began working. When I arrived in Canada it was the same as in the US, 10 vacation days annually.
      I soon got into working a minimum of 10 hours overtime per week and after three years, had ramped that up to as high as an average of over 20 hours overtime per week (I was one of the lower ones 😎).
      So to sum it up, the American worker is among the hardest working and in many parts of the country, they are left to choose how to best spend their income to chart their own lives. A type of financial freedom that might not occur in other parts of the country or in the world.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Robinson For not having lived here, you summed it up pretty well. However, the OP should keep in mind that most folks that build airplanes are in the upper half of the middle class at least so you aren’t seeing a complete picture of America. There is a wide range from very rich to very poor and you can’t draw too many conclusions when looking at only one slice of the population.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Dutton Capital gains tax is only levied when you sell a property. It is not an annual tax. And there are exceptions such as when you sell your primary residence. Capital gains is really designed to hit investments, not your primary residence.
