This is the battle that made me a fan of Fire Emblem. Gah, I kinda wanna go play the game again now. This theme is the ultimate gut punch from the devs after the presiding scene.

This chapter made me realize the grey part of war in general. The game conveys that there can actually be morally good people on the other side, but because they are essentially forced to fight for the safety of their country and family, they have no choice. Awakening displayed that beautifully.

I think I get the 'menacing' part you've mentioned, but personally I've always associated it with anger. Raw, emotional anger, mixed with lots of sadness and an unrelenting will to keep going regardless of the emotional turmoil. This theme hits so very hard in the context of the game.
Some other little tidbits: Firstly, yes, Fire Emblem is a Nintendo-exclusive IP. And secondly, Awakening takes its song titles directly from lines spoken during the game's dialogue, so the song title corresponds very closely to the scene it's played in. (This somewhat quirky naming scheme also means the ost has some hilarious names like "Agh! Won goph in mah mouph! Blech! Ptooey!")

As far as emotional battles go, this one ranks right up there with having to fight while Aerith's theme plays 🥲 God this makes me wanna play through the game again, even with the matchmaking grinding that's involved 😅

Oh dear, I totally forgot that I've requested this song as well :'D
Fire Emblem: Awakening was the one that truly got me into the series although I've always been interested in it before. Thanks to this one, I've played all the Fire Emblem games from 6 onwards except the newest one yet. Storywise, it's more or less a sequel of Fire Emblem 1 (or the 11 remake) and 3 (or the 12 remake). This one, numberwise, would be Fire Emblem 13, but it can be played as a stand-alone :D
This moment just means so so much in this game, especially throughout the whole next fight map, this theme plays instead of any epic battle music. The way it weaves the main theme into this tragic piece is just so wonderful. Even though I haven't played the game for so long, this almost made me cry again ;w; Especially because I've heard fan lyrics to this song as well and aaah :(
    *STORY SPOILER*

    .
The title of the song is (if I remember correctly) also a direct quote from the game. When the protagonist's sister dies, he is taunted by the enemy and the title is him shouting at the enemy to stop talking about her.

You both are right. Plegian general Mustafa, serving under king Gangrel, encountered Chrom's army and offered mercy if they surrendered, saying that Emmeryn's last words were not lost on him, and that she wouldn't like to see more bloodshed. That's when Chrom says the line.

Oh my god I have been waiting for this one. This imo is one of the most well composed pieces of music in gaming, and modern Fire Emblem in general is one of my top faves for the music. I'm pretty sure this piece was composed by Rei Kondoh; after you have played some of the more recent games you start to recognise what they are good at and in their case it's emotionally heavy, long pieces with a big buildup to an amazing climax. Before I knew about him, I looked up my faves from FE Fates and it turned out that most of those specific tracks were actually composed by Kondoh too; by the time I got to Three Houses I guessed at his work and was actually right (and they were also my favourites).
Not gonna spoil any more but basically this plays during a fight and it's one of those brilliant times in games where the music is used so artistically, for amazing effect. Usually in games, you get into combat > battle theme plays. In some distinct gaming moments there is that one time where the battle theme doesn't play at all, and instead only plays the environmental or emotional music. The absence is noteworthy in itself, and immediately draws the emotion and attention to whatever dire situation is happening. Fire Emblem is a little different because it usually has dynamic music on the map that transitions as you go into combat, but for this fight, it doesn't change at all, it's just this for the entire map.

Oh, man, this song. The feels. When I first played through Awakening, this song and the map it plays on hit me *hard*. It’s a very sad part of the story. I don’t think that there’s a single Fire Emblem game that I would rather have been my first experience with the series.

This song helps this scene in the story so much it makes you really feel what the protagonist is feeling
    Spoilers
The way that the map is structured in the game is so good, you're told that the enemy doesn't want to fight but they can't change sides. Chrom's Still angry about the death of his sister so he wants to take out his anger on those enemies, especially the thieves who have really good items you can take back and since you're running away from the enemy, this setup is so good and the execution is even better with this theme behind it

They did everything to maximize the impact of this song. The pre-battle preparations screen before this plays a sombre solo-piano track instead the usual warm-up tune. Then when the battle starts, this plays uninterrupted behind both your own and your enemies' actions. It also has none of the dynamic shifts to match the action that the rest of the soundtrack does.
The protagonist, the player, the enemies, and even the music, are all focused on the events that have just transpired in the story instead of the battle in front of them.

What a way to start 2024! This song is used in one chapter of FE:A, and it is also the only music that plays for the entirety of the chapter which is unlike every other chapter in the entire game.
The flow is usually that your side has a theme that changes into a more bombastic version when you go into battle, and then the enemy's theme starts playing which does the same when they engage you in battle.
This one chapter throws this out the window.
No spoilers, but let's just say that when you play FE:A someday, you will know.

Fire Emblem got it's start as Nintendo and Intelligent Systems' answer to Squaresoft's Final Fantasy, all the way back on the Famicom.
The first FE to reach the West was the 7th game, but the franchise nearly died out in the West over the next few entries. Then Awakening happened. It is the game which is credited with saving the franchise and turning it into a major IP, and popularizing the series in the West. In a sense, it is to Fire Emblem what FF7 was to Final Fantasy.

    • @RicochetForce
      @RicochetForce 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Yup, Intelligent Systems was very candid when they stated they received an ultimatum from Nintendo after a long string of financially unsuccessful games: Unless this game is an overwhelming success, the franchise is done. So what they did is put in all the ideas they'd wanted to put into previous games into this one. It was a hail mary pass, and goddamn they nailed it.
Unfortunately, their other franchise, Advance Wars didn't get that and it's basically been allowed to fade away.

One of the most heart wrenching chapters in the game(if not the most) and probably in the top 10 in the series. This fight takes place right after an incredible tragedy and is in a sense a lashing out of emotions from that event, no matter how much neither side wants to fight they have little choice. While you prepare for the fight a softer piano track plays and once you enter the song barely changes between the battle and normal versions and heck it hits so hard.

This is one of the best Fire Emblem songs ever. Awakening had a pretty great soundtrack overall - if you're curious about more songs, I'd warmly recommend Id - Purpose (I don't know if there is a medley of all the different Ids out there, it's an evolving theme, and listening to all of them might take a while). Little tidbit about the song titles in this game for whoever is curious.
The songs you'll hear throughout combat have regular titles, but songs that play mostly during cutscenes have names that are quotes from the game (usually said around when the song first appears.)
The songs that play during fights would be stuff like Conquest and Conquest (Ablaze), where the regular version plays when you move around units, with dynamic transitions into the (Ablaze) version when you attack someone.
This song isn't actually from a cutscene, but I'm fairly sure its only used in one chapter. "Don't speak her name!" in this case is said in the cutscene leading up to the fight.

Even if the writing leading up to it wasn't very good, this is absolutely the best chapter in the game. It's not groundbreaking or anything, but the presentation is probably the best in the series.
The way they portray the enemies as unwilling, and the map being a muddy mess that's somewhat of a nightmare to tredge through in the pouring rain absolutely sells how absolutely miserable everyone involved is.

Also about the song tittles, almost every piece used in Awakening's soundtrack is a part of the dialogue of the story and it is always trying to put you into the perspective of the characterer that the song is about. So I think you would've a field day looking through the titles of the soundtrack 😂

Probably Awakening's most memorable segment. This game has a bit of a weird and (imo) clumsy approach to its story structure and writing, but the part where this plays sticks the landing so well as though it should belong in another game entirely.
The piano is lovely and then when it goes into 3:04 it just blows the listener away. And 4:15 too, it's great. Contender for best track in Awakening.

Yep Fire Emblem is a proper* Nintendo IP.
It's interesting how you picked up on the menacing undertone of the track as I feel many fans overlook it, even in context.
See, the protagonist goes into a bit of a blind rage following the events that lead into this track. The enemy boss on this map is probably the most sympathetic enemy you face from this army, and I've always interpreted this piece of music to show that there's a tinge darkness to your justice.

Ok this piece plays at a moment in the story after you just witnessed the protagonist's sister who you were trying to rescue purposely fall to her death after you were unable to rescue her, a noble but heart wrenching sacrifice to protect an extremely important artifact. Now, your army is trapped deep in enemy territory and with your mission a failure and morale at an all time low, you are trying to at least escape with your lives. As you escape through the wastelands in the rain, you come upon the enemy army whose commander and soldiers don't want to fight you, as many were there to see her death and are opposed to further violence, but are forced to fight you regardless, the commander even offers to protect you as best as he can if you were to surrender to him. That isn't a chance you can afford to take however and so you fight. When you kill the commander, he begs you to spare his men.

If you had a 3ds at that time it was hard to avoid being driven to buy the game (especially after playing the demo on the eshop), and Smash 4 only helped further by bringing Lucina and Robin in.
