    Hi Edward, I am from Calgary. I watch your videos everyday. Like them very much. May I ask, what are those black bands wrapped around the tree trunks for? We don't have them in Calgary.

      Hi! It's part of the city's efforts to control cankerworms (and tent caterpillars, but especially cankerworms) which are the larvae of a type of moth that devour leaves and also drop out of the trees on silk threads, which is really annoying. :) . You're supposed to band your trees in the spring and in the fall. The bands are typically fiberglass insulation covered in plastic, duct-taped to the tree, and then smeared with grease. The bands trap the wingless female moths as they crawl up the tree to lay their eggs.
