    For anyone who may be struggling for- (what appears to be a lifetime) ever trying their darnedest to get that bloody ring to snug on. I have the key! The proper seating of the ring is pressure sensitive application. This means that after you line up the bulb correctly. Then next (as shown) the ring. You'll need to first PRESS IN the ring, itself, before you can ever get that satisfaction feeling from the locking mechanism into its proper position. That's the gold! For whatever reason the video edits (3:30 min) past this critical moment in the process. Making it seem like all there is to do is discover the alignment then just turn it into a lock position. But that's very misleading and, as you probably realized, extremely frustrating, too. So save yourself countless hours of grief. Impart this simple little method and see the whole thing come together with ease.

      I tried as you suggested, i was still struggling to turn it I ended up damaging the outer element, i just couldn't do it, wouldn't it be easier just to take the whole unit off of the car?

  • @SirManlyPowers
    @SirManlyPowers 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    You may run into the case where you can't twist the ballast back onto the locking rig. Here's what's going on: Within the ballast there is a cream colored plastic ring that locks the bulb and is a part of the connector eject mechanism. If it gets out of alignment you won't be able to re-install the ballast. Take a screwdriver and just move the ring around so it's notches line up with the other notches in the ballast. Then the ballast will twist on easily (as in the video). BTW- you can't attach the connector before you install the ballast- if you try to do this the aforementioned issue will occur. I learnt this the hard way....

      Jason Harris you're absolutely right. Plugging in the wires trips a tiny mechanism that rotates that clear plastic washer. It's crazy.

    This is the best instruction video; once I understood the 'square' bit up the top, everything was easy to place in and no resistance to lock into place. After watching this video from 2hrs of attempting from the manual it was done in less than 5 mins for both sides. A good tip as well is check eBay for the bulbs, $300 was to buy 2 bulbs where they were identical to ones I could have got on eBay for $35 for the 2. Thanks heaps!

    His instructions are excellent, took me 5 to 10 minutes to replace the LED. You can tell it's the LED by looking at the oval bulb in the old LED;; if it's opaque, it's your LED.. If you have a level or downhill ( face car downhill) area, seat the new LED, notch up, as described in video, then insert collar with "TOP" indicator carefully over new LED and wriggle till it seats and turns to lock easily. Then do as video instructs. If you're in a big hurry you will screw this up and make it harder than it needs to be; I've been there and done that! Oh and mine was on the tight driver's side and I got large hands😁😉

    You guys always make the best videos. Clear, detailed, simple,and great tips. Have any other tips on how to diagnose whether it's a bulb or a ballast problem though, please? I'd try switch bulbs like you suggest, but both sides do it. Every time I hit a bump, 1 or both headlights shut off for a few seconds or more.

      Hey guys huge fans of both of your channels! I’m currently having a problem with my headlights were they are not coming on at all. Originally the passenger side was slightly more dim the the driver side, then driver side was purple and ultimately losing both all together at the same time. To preface this the driver side was a much newer unit, replaced about a year ago. Is there a module that controls both headlights?

    Hey, great video! Just one note, it's difficult to nail this assembly without the actual headlight removed as you have it. Perhaps a quick update that shows the technique mentioned by another commenter-show us how to install with the ballast + ring + bulb preassembled. I spent a lot of time cramming my face into my car's nether regions making sure things were lined up, only for the bulb to squirm when I tried to line up the ring.

    Good show ... on my R32 even with a mirror it was DIFFICULT to replicate. I advise to try this procedure with the broken bulb first. What is annoying, is the fact that the cut out in the bulb does NOT really fit around the nose of the assembly. Hence - not seeing anything, I can still twist and turn. Get it into the right position and continue. It worked for me.

    I know this is an old video, but I've been wanting to do a black out housing on my gli, but I have stock bixenon and there's no blacked hid housings that I can find and I'm trying not to have to open the lens to paint. Can I get another projector style blacked housing and swap over the hid pieces?

  • @whatsforsupa
    @whatsforsupa 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would you recommend taking the housing out to install headlights? It's such a pain in the arse to do lock them in place correctly in car.
    Another question, If the ballast is not caution sign facing up, will that disorient the light? I only ask because mine are slightly off angle and my light is suffering.

    • @Deutscheautoparts
      @Deutscheautoparts  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh Wallace No we would no advise taking the headlight out to do this. While it is not easy to get to removing the headlights requires the front bumper and grille to be removed. As far as you question about what we assume would be the igniter, the orientation should not affect light output. You might need to aim your lights or you could be have a bulb or igniter problem.

    Awesome video, helped out a lot last weekend when I had a dead bulb on the passenger side. I replaced both, now about 3 days later my drivers side bulb is showing 'out'. I've heard some bad things about VW's and electric problems but it's a 06 and these are my first issues. I also recently had a brake light go out too, but that only costs a few bucks so not as worried.

    • @Deutscheautoparts
      @Deutscheautoparts  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim where did you purchase the bulbs from? There are tons of really cheap poor quality HID bulbs out there that can cause tons of issues. We know Xenon bulbs can be expensive but purchasing a quality brand from a reputable company is worth the expense on these.
      Hope this helps

    • @preztw

      Hello, I got Philips D2S Xenon HID off Amazon, cost $74.99 for two of them. It just went out this morning so haven't had a chance to take it all apart and make sure something didn't arc or blow out. I'm not 100% sure on the bulbs, they say Philips all over them and the box. Only went with Amazon due to the Prime shipping speed.

    • @Deutscheautoparts
      @Deutscheautoparts  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Timothy Wyatt Phillips is a quality brand but $74.99 for 2 seems like they could be copies. We can tell you that amazon does not do a good job a vetting the sellers (parts specifically) products who sell on Amazon so that could be the issue, but its really tough to say. You should try swapping the bulbs again from side to side and see if the problem moves.

    Would a bad bulb or igniter cause a mkv gti not to auto level?
    Both front and rear leveling arms are connected. Also igniter and leveling motor is plugged in.
    Lights are not auto leveling, and the brights aren't staying on, automatically going back to low beams after about 30 seconds.

    • @Deutscheautoparts
      @Deutscheautoparts  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its tough to be sure if you are having 1 or possibly more issues. The headlights not adjusting is likely to be the range control motor
      www.deutscheautoparts.com/View/1T0-907-391/0/51868. You should possibly try swapping them and see if there is any change.
      The high beam sounds like it could be an separate issue and you should consider bringing your vehicle to a VW specialist to diagnose this.

    Hi. My Xenon is genuine and came from factory. Now, 6 years of usage, one side seams like have a fog inside the projector.
    How can I clean that and what is the cause?
    The lamps shoud be replaced by usage time or just when they stop working. I realized the ligt is not so effective and thing the cause is the "foggy dust" inside projector.

    Clocked bulb retainer has a plastic pin that lock it in place(upper part near the "TOP" inscription). In this video the pin is absent or broken. To remove the bulb retainer you must find a way to pull that pin and rotate in the same time...
    It is very hard to do that with the headlight on the car because you have little space to operate...

    I replaced a bulb and forgot to put the cap on the back of the headlight back on, I then drove the car for a bit and it rained and now my light went out. What could have fried? I swapped the igniter and bulb but its none of those things. Is it the ballast?

      +Carlos Robles Im sorry its tough to say. It could be the module or bad wiring or a blown fuse. This will require more diagnosis.

    Hi, I want to start by saying thank you for uploading your videos, I appreciate all the info you provide. I have a question for you:
    I own a fahrenheit 07 which has hid lights, a couple of years ago one bulb went bad. I called a dealer to get a price on them bulbs which was ridiculously expensive, so after some time I decided to buy them off eBay and they are still working as of today. But... they are not as bright as the ones it used to have, I remember. So my question is does it really matter if its an aftermarket bulb? If I go and buy a set of OEM bulbs will it be bright as it should? Or do you think the ballast is bad? Thank you!

    Hey guys... not sure where to find the information- but I have an 07 GTI with the Bi-Xenon self leveling lights... they have decided to stay stuck in the down position. It was also popping at TPMS warning light on the dash as well. I went in with VCDS and turned off the TPMS and it seemed to fix the problem for a little bit, but now they are again stuck in the down position. I was an hour away from home in the pitch dark on back country roads trying to get home without being able to see. HELP! What in the same hell is going on with these things? I know the tires aren't low... why on earth would they make the headlights not work if it popped a tire pressure light anyhow... that's just plain dangerous!
