    Redd Volkaert is a national treasure. Not just the master, but so musical with every note. Inimitable.

    Love his style. It's almost a mix of Django, Roy Nichols, Eldon Shamblin, among others. Smooth like and aged whisky.

    I saw Redd over ten years ago, at a bar about the size of a 1920x1080 pixel video, called The Little Longhorn, in Austin , Tx. It was my first time seeing anyone play like that, live. What an awesome experience it was!

    These videos with Redd are so beneficial, I could watch them 1,000 times. This time the golden words were, If you are playing in the key of "C", all styles of Music are neighbors." What a genius....
    Redd can play all styles of Music well, so this statement is a reality. Something else I want to mention is that Redd had the balls to go on the road in his Nissan pickup with a week's worth of clothes and a bed in the bed..(lol). I guess when you are this good, there are no ifs and or buts, YOU JUST GO!

    I met Big Red at a Merle Haggard concert we went to here in El Paso TX..
    Red was working the T shirt stand before the show. I talked him out of a HAG T shirt, and I still have it. He was such a kind man and BOY could he pick that Telecaster with Merle that night. 😛

    Redd is awesome on the guitar and just as awesome as a person! I met him down on Broadway in Nashville and got to talk with him. He is an encyclopedia of 'Telecaster' knowledge. And I love his theory on how 'Western Swing' came to be...lol!

    What control and "vocabulary" Redd has! I suspect he has played many thousands of gigs over the years. He knows and uses what I'd call "practical theory" no doubt learned on the bandstand. His down- to-earth personality helps, too.

    • @pickinstone
      @pickinstone 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Western Swing--definitely country. People forget that jazz and country are closer cousins than you think. When you realize that a lot of the OG jazz musicians came from the South and Midwest--going back to big band territory bands--you'll see the overlaps. Today's mainstream country... yeah, I won't say anymore.

    Great player and person. I wish I knew Redd personally...However I don't like the semi-distorted low strings. Although I am a guitar player, I've played bass with a lot of well-known blues/jazz guitarists on the road for many years. When they would have this tone setting so that the low E , A, when played as intervals are almost distorted, it would drive me nuts. Kind of like finger nails down a chalkboard to me. I understand the main objective behind this, "woman tone", as Clapton sometimes uses, or I should say invented. It is great when used on the strings 4-1, but leave the low E and the A out of it with this setting......

    Practice while you’re getting paid? This guy can practice while he gets paid because adding new technique for him (is always within his grasp) new technique for him is learned within couple days. Musically talented barely struggle with instrument (if it takes a week to learn they call it (struggle) where many people attempt , only to learn it feels less awkward than before, still can’t play it.
