This whole album is great for sure. If you are not inclined to listen to each track, don't miss "Mercy Street" and "In Your Eyes." Also, the Security (1982) album is great, and "Shock the Monkey" is a must-listen.

JP, ‘So’ is a seminal masterpiece. The entire album is Peter Gabriel at his peak. Sledgehammer and Big Time are the least of the good despite their popularity. The real gems are In Your Eyes, Don’t Give Up, Mercy Street… oh man his voice is unmatched and the music/sounds will move you irreversible. You will be changed by this album. It’s unavoidable. You can’t not be changed.

Hi JP. Dave from London. With So, Peter achieved the Smoke And Mirrors trick of being experimental and commercial - a rare feat. Love this song, where he takes forward the tribal drums from his Security album. In Your Eyes is probably my favourite, as it introduced me to the excellent Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour, who guested on the So tour (how good was that!)

Peter Gabriel III (Melt) is his greatest solo artistic achievement (in my opinion). A brilliant album from beginning to end. Red Rain is great, great burst of energy and emotion to open this album. You're completely spot on about the percussion and about Gabriel's amazing depth in his voice. There's nobody that sings like Gabriel. His raw, impassioned vocals always had my favor over Collins' smooth as silk voice. Both are great, but Gabriel is so imperfectly perfect. Unique. Real.

The arrangement with percussion by Stewart Copeland (Police) and session drummer Jerry Marotta is quite outstanding. I have seen Peter in concert and he is very theatrical and energetic. His songs are all thought-provoking and deep in meaning, just like the Opus of 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. Oh, oh-oh
Putting the pressure on much harder now
To return again and again (Red rain)
Just let the red rain splash you
Let the rain fall on your skin (Red rain)

Red Rain is a great song. I also love Digging in the Dirt. And yes, Peter has a unique vocal fry going on that's.... him.
This was inspired by a recurring dream where Gabriel was swimming in a sea of red water. Gabriel explained to Mojo magazine September 2013: "'Red Rain' was written after a dream I'd had about the sea being parted by two walls. There were these glass-like figures that would screw themselves into each wall, fill up with red blood and then be lowered across the sand, as it were to the next wall, where they'd unload the blood on the other side. I used to have these extremely vivid dreams that scared the hell out of me."
Gabriel explained: "If feelings of pain do not get brought out, not only do they fester and grow stronger but they manifest themselves in the external world."

I don't think you read too much in here. The song always spoke to me of the torrents of pain in the world at large, with Peter feeling it intimately and deeply at this stage in his development, and most of society walled off from and untouched by it. Peter's practically begging us all to let it touch us, coming to us with defenses down, from the heart, trying to get us to look up and see what is all around us - the flood of red - and let it move us, break us open. It's not surprising that the imagery derives from a recurring dream theme he had, he often speaks in the language of dreams, to get past our conscious censors, and go right into our dreambody, our intuitive unconscious - and this song is no exception. A true shaman.

For me it was about Acid Rain, around that time in the mid to late-80's when this song was written, acid rain was a new phenomenon, the death of trees causing destruction of forest.
I am standing up at the water's edge in my dream
I cannot make a single sound as you scream
It can't be that cold, the ground is still warm to touch
    Hey, we touch
This place is so quiet, sensing that storm
The acid rain has burned his vocal cords why he cannot make a sound. And it's not winter because the ground is still warm but yet the trees are dead like trees in winter without leaves. Why it's so quiet is everything around is dead or have left or taking shelter from the Acid Rain...the Red Rain.

Congratulations on reaching 19k subscribers! Definitely worth pursuing the rest of the album although you've already done 'Don't Give Up' with Kate Bush. This is a breathtaking song, commercial but still impassioned, moving, raw and trying new things with the percussion in particular. It only charted at number 46 in the UK after he'd already scored big hit singles from the album with 'Slegehammer', 'Don't Give Up', 'In Your Eyes' and 'Big Time'. Coming a year after Chernobyl and amidst the AIDS crisis, it's hard not to think that Red Rain doesn't (subconsciously at least) have wider meaning. I love this album, although 'Big Time' while a good track, suffers from an overly eighties production.

I think that one of the words you are looking for with Peter's voice is "Warm".... I was SO lucky (sorry just had to) to see Peter tour the Anniversary of this album when he had the core of the musicians from this album with him.... David Rhodes - Guitar, Tony Levin - Bass, Manu Katche - Drums, David Sancious - Keyboards... and of course Peter himself.... As for the rest of the album... It most definitely maintains the same high standard as Red Rain... Stay safe and Keep on Rocking..

No faulting your thoughts on this song, it's a great opener and his vocals sell it without any auto-tuning. This was a landmark '80s album, it sold bigger than anything else he ever recorded, I'm kind of surprised you haven't heard it before now. Yes the talented musicians are remarkable but it's Gabriel's vision. For me it was Gabriel and Sting that introduced world music to the western world of pop and it started before this album.
One thing, I checked several sources for the lyrics and they all agree Gabriel is singing "with the trust of a child" but I always heard "with the trust of a giant" which is more picturesque, it conveys a very different image.

There was another musical genius pursuing world music fusion back then ~ Paul Simon released his Graceland album a few months after So in August, 86’. That was a great time to be a music lover !

Auto-tune was introduced to the market in 1997, Yog-Sothoth. There is never a good reason to mention it re: a hit record before then. I think Justin, and every single listener out there is well-aware of the difference.

It’s like Peter Gabriel, Genesis and Phil Collins were all trying to out-do each other during the 80s and topping the charts. I think Peter came out the winner with this album artistically and sales-wise. Red Rain got a fair amount of airplay back in the day.

I just want to thank you for all your hard work. You Tube is my startup page and I can always get my JustJP fix around 8 AM, sometimes sooner. You are so reliable (a reliable dog geyser person if you watch "Buffy the Vampire Slayer").
I love Peter Gabriel's music, his first 5 albums are brilliant, "So" being #5. "Us" was nearly as good and his 1989 soundtrack album "Passion" is definitely worth listening to although there are no lyrics. It was used throughout the Martin Scorsese film "The Last Temptation of Christ" which I liked enough to read the book. I think it sold well. "Up" from 2002 didn't grab me like his earlier ones did and it was his last of new material. I wish he'd release more, he has the talent and creativity.
Yes by all means listen to all of "So", I think most agree that it's his best. Laurie Anderson (wife of Lou Reed) features on 1 track, Kate Bush duets on another, Youssou N'Dour is featured on 1 song, Jim Kerr (of Simple Minds) sings backing vocals on another, etc.

This one of the greatest albums of the 80s, one of the greatest of all time, in my opinion. It was up for a Grammy that year but (barely?) beat out by Paul Simon's Graceland. Both albums have stood the test of time. Classics.

@JustJP: I've checked out MANY Reaction channels, but your commentaries are the best BY FAR. But YOU bring an entirely different level of thoughtful analysis and discourse to this space. Well done, brother. 👍👍👍

The previous album, 1982's Security was one of the first all digital productions with some great songs, and used samples played on the Fairlight CMI for many unusual percussion sounds, such as scraped muffler pipe, and blown exhaust pipe. The Wiki write up is good, plus there is the episode of The South Bank Show about the recording of the album.

Congrats, JP on 19k! Another milestone for the channel. As for Peter Gabriel _So_ it is a true modern masterpiece of Pop, Experimental and World Music which contains several groundbreaking songs. This album was released the same time as Genesis released _Invisible Touch,_ so it was a big, BIG year for Genesis related music. Highlights include "Red Rain", "Sledgehammer" "Don't Give Up" (a duet with Kate Bush) and the extremely moving "Mercy Street".

So was released in May of 1986. Red Rain was the second single from the album, actually, after Sledgehammer, but only in the US. In the rest of the world it was the fifth and final single, released in July 1987. Easily my favorite track from the album. It was a great opening track. This whole album had amazing people on it. Tony Levin’s bass has such power here. Jerry Marotta’s drum coupled with Police drummer Stewart Copeland on the hi-hat? Yes please! The whole vibe of this song, and the imagery it evokes, soar over every other track.
Now don’t get me wrong, the rest of this album is genius. You can’t go wrong with Pete and Kate together on Don’t Give Up; Sledgehammer, Big Time, and In Your Eyes are definitive tracks of this period for him, and commercially accepted. Mercy Street is incredible. This whole album fires on all cylinders. And don’t overlook the drum work of Manu Katche on the album, either.
But Red Rain will always be just that one step ahead of them all for me.

There was a local radio station that took requests for the "Drive at 5" song that they would play at 5PM on weekdays. The live version of this song was requested so much that it was played for almost two weeks straight. Epic song, especially live. Please watch the Secret World Live version of this song to really appreciate this masterpiece.

Yes it is one of Peter Gabriel’s best songs. Red rain has been in my top 15 or so songs since I first heard it back in 1987. And no, I am not sure what it’s about either. Sexual experimentation I think. I feel like there is a lot of psychotherapy behind it.
This reaction has been so emotional for me Justin. Just watching you going through phases of excitement with the thundering percussions, the masterful musicianship from all sides and yet coming out of the experience quite unsettled. I think that this song taps straight into our subconscious. Its message is visceral: don’t listen to most people who can’t feel that level of emotion, overcome your fears, trust someone like a child.
And it puts the listener in a trance-like state through its primal drumming and the astonishing quality of its production. Yet the best song on So is Mercy Street. Thank you for another Sunday treat my friend.
