Great coin-op conversion, but which is your favourite vertical scrolling shooter on the C64? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1986: tinyurl.com/1986-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
Ahh great memories huh. I had loads of horizontal shooters but yeah... apart from Xenon for the Amiga, this was one of my favourite vertical shooters 😇🕹️👌
Having grown up with the C64 version and played the original arcade (emulated) or other versions only later, the C64 music is still the greatest thing for me
Absolutely, the silky smooth SID tunes are one of the biggest factors for game nostalgia on the Commodore 64. If the music in a game was good, it stuck with you for life 😇🕹️👌
The music is pretty awesome isn't it, I've been humming it as I played this for a good while lately. Still brings back some awesome memories and I really want to head out to the Arcade Club again soon and track the Coin-Op version down once more 😇🕹️👌
Smashing game in the arcades - we're lucky to have the 'Arcade Club' nearby, with loads of arcade machines still available to play - this being one of them 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer The RMC/Arcade Archive isn't far from me, I really should pay them a visit and get some action in :D I grew up by the seaside, so had arcades all around me as a kid. All my paper round money was turned in to 10p's at weekends :D
When I first played this game on the C64 I was a bit disapointed, because I played the arcade version back then. The arcade version looked way better. But it played very good on the C64 and I did like it very much. Even now I still like to play 1942 on the C64.
I guess nothing would beat the arcade games back then... I was the same, when I bought both Double Dragon & Golden Axe. Fantastic in the arcades but pretty bland on the C64. Still, to be able to play these games at home as a kid was still an awesome experience. We were blessed to have such a vast games catalogue on the trusty beige box 😇🕹️👌
I never liked games where you had to fly an airplane , but after giving this baby a try i fell in love! Always had lots of fun playing 1942 and its sequels with my brother. Thanks for another sweet review cheek!
So many hours poured into this one as well as the 1943 Arcade cabinet. Both briljant games and two that I often come back to still to this day. That theme music to the 64 version is burnt into my memory. Im sure that if I ever get dementia Ill still remember it is someone asks me.
Oh yes. I had this with one of those games compilations. My Dad, sister and I had a blast playing this one. Nearly took the joystick apart as well, especially when I was making good progress, only to get blown to pieces. Good times, though.
The amount of joysticks I must have gone through back in the day!! My brother used to go mad at me. I think 'Decathlon' was to blame for many of them being destroyed... and in later years, 'Combat School' (Boot Camp in the US) 😇🕹️👌
This game was amazing in the arcade. Although my father got almost every game for us, bootleg version, I always preferred Blue Max and River Raid to this one on the C64.
I never knew there was so many levels. It was something I would play but never had the desire to go beyond a couple of goes at a time. I thought it was OK but not something I'd instantly go to if playing my C64
I had this game on the NES and Gameboy Color. I think I played the arcade version a few times. I like this kind of game but prefer ones which allow two players simultaneously, and include multiple aircraft to use more.
Haha, I see I wasn't the only one who would set their C64 on the ground for games that used the spacebar to tap them with their toe! Strangely enough, this and Space Harrier were 2 games my first girlfriend would come over to play and let me feel her up while she did so, LOL. So many memories of testosterone with my C64 as a 13 year old!
There were actually 2 releases of 1942 on the C64, the main difference is the music. Both are great, but I prefer the original music as shown in this video. As for the game, it was a bit of a wasted opportunity imho. The panel at the top should have used sprites in the border, allowing the game area to be the full 200 pixels high. That would have made it play a lot better. Enemy bullets are drawn into the characters with black pixel blocks, which means their movement is really choppy and hard to see sometimes. The big enemy planes fire far too fast, making the game far too difficult. Anyone that can complete 1942 without a trainer is a legend! I played this a lot growing up, probably for the music, but never got more than a handful of levels. And when I got a trained version, it was sad to see it just wrapped around 😢 A slightly obscure game to consider for your videos: Cops and Robbers! Did you ever play that? A guilty pleasure game and slagged off by ZZap but way better than they said (9%).
It sucks when a brilliant game, or one you consider to be brilliant, is slated in the mags. My guilty pleasure was 'Booty', but it abhorrently slated haha. Yeah I've got Cops & Robbers on the list... been a hectic month 😇🕹️👌

my first vertical shooter with power ups on the c64 I think, loved it
Ahh great memories huh. I had loads of horizontal shooters but yeah... apart from Xenon for the Amiga, this was one of my favourite vertical shooters 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGameryeah. my first favorite was River raid but this have power ups which was new for me at the time
I loved this game in the arcade and at home.
Fantastic in the arcades... glad we got a very good conversion for the C64 too 😇🕹️👌

😂 'The space bar foot' a classic technique required for home computers.
Absolutely, you knew you was a proper retro gamer if you have ever used your feet to activate any special weapons in games hehe 😇🕹️👌
I played a ton of this game, it was a good arcade conversion, and I love the music
The music is pretty awesome isn't it, I've been humming it as I played this for a good while lately. Still brings back some awesome memories and I really want to head out to the Arcade Club again soon and track the Coin-Op version down once more 😇🕹️👌
Great game in the arcades and most of the conversions were pretty faithful :) I loved playing this one!

Ahh isnt that around Gloucestershire somewhere? I'm up in Lancashire... but that would be a trip worth taking someday for sure 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Yep sure is, I'm in Swindon, so it's not far from me. You'll have to plan a visit some day :)

Glad you enjoyed it - I love the coin-op version, but have to admit it is still very addictive on the trusty Commodore 64 😇🕹️👌
I actually enjoyed this version more than the NES one.
A great game isn't it. Never tried it on the NES but that's something for me to explore at some point for sure 😇🕹👌
I need to play a cabinet version of 194x.
The controls are really super responsive in the arcades - a real blast 😇🕹️👌

Haha you and me both my friend, there are so many SID tunes etched into my brain... I find myself randomly humming them during my day to day life 😇🕹️👌

Classic.
Has to be up there as one of the best vertical shooters 😇🕹️👌
this is one I played many times in the arcade, especially after I learned how to get the "exploding spiders" power up.
Every game should have an 'exploding spiders' power up, as standard 😂🕷️💥
This game was amazing in the arcade. Although my father got almost every game for us, bootleg version, I always preferred Blue Max and River Raid to this one on the C64.
Yeah Blue Max is class isn't it - thats up there on the channel too. I'll definitely get around to River Raid too someday... great games 😇🕹️👌
I never knew there was so many levels. It was something I would play but never had the desire to go beyond a couple of goes at a time.

A decent little shooter, easy to pick up and play 😇🕹️👌

I know what you mean there, simulataneous shooters are double the fun and double the firepower 😇🕹👌
Cracking game on the c64..I Still got a copy on the Encore budget re release
Ahh nice! I've been on Ebay on the hunt for this one... might have to get it someday to add to the collection 😇🕹️👌

Well then! Thats a memory you'll never forget!! No wonder these space bar games are so nostalgic 😇🕹️👌
Pretty decent looking! I thought there was a freeze move but I must be thinking of the sequel 1943. But yeah this looks good for c64. 🛩️
Yeah I think that was possibly the sequel - decent game this, been playing it a fair bit lately 😇🕹️👌
Had the C16...always envied you C64 lot 😂 look at us now 👍🙏💯
The C16 seems to be having a revival of late! I must get around to playing some games for it soon 😇🕹️👌
Lemon lists two versions of 1942, so I'm wondering if there's any difference between the Elite and Encore release. Do you know?
Yeah it was re-released - main difference being totally different in-game music 😇🕹️👌
There were actually 2 releases of 1942 on the C64, the main difference is the music. Both are great, but I prefer the original music as shown in this video.

Yeah the scenery was bland but what a great job 'Elite' did on the game! As in the arcade version it was great fun. 💥✈️💥🎮😂
Brilliant fire button basher in the arcades isn't it! Still, we got a very decent conversion too 😇🕹️👌
Very hard game
It certainly gets tough in places, especially when there are multiple enemies coming from all angles! 😇🕹️👌
It's not a roll it's a loop😂
Haha yeah, a loop... a roll... a 360 ooobi-doobi 😆🕹👌
