I'm still in awe of how this guy so effortlessly had such a lightfeathered jazzlike swing and feel to his drumming, while at the same time loudly pounding his drums as if the world is going to end next.

I think Bonham maintained a thought process regarding a kit. Don't HIT the drums; PLAY them.

@Freddie Sykes Of course there was swing. But he could and did PLAY it. I'm constantly amazed by the number of drummers who don't know the difference between "hitting" and "playing". They tell me they play, but 1 bar in I can tell they are hitting.

You don't think that Phil Collins was a better drummer than Bonham? I don't think you've heard the Brand X recordings from the same general era. Phil Collins was perhaps the best drummer in the world . . . at that time.

    • @jonathanvince8173
      @jonathanvince8173 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Xformat01 The problem with is Phil Collins can keep timing but The Led Zeppelin songs were off beat timing that means every forth third and fifth beat was either doubled up or slowed down to match the Bass or Keyboard or the lead guitar. something most drummers had never done before. Let alone had to keep it up for over ten to 20 minuets in each song.

    • @Xformat01

@@jonathanvince8173 I hear you, and appreciate what you're saying. Very cool indeed. But . . . you haven't listened to those early Brand X years. Truly astonishing. I'd say that the drumming of Collins was more intuitive than that of Lenny White on Chick Corea's "Romantic Warrior" CD (1976). IMO, there was a time when Phil Collins was the best overall drummer in the world. Brand X is classic fusion of Rock and Jazz; remarkable music still worthy of listening to, today. Unlike Bitches Brew from Miles Davis (wretched).

I've been playing for 30 years. There's plenty to learn, obviously, on the drums in the technique realm, but I've always felt that some things can't be taught. Like, feel and a general sense of musicality or instinct on the drums. It's those things that put Bonham up there at the top. There are a million drummers these days that could put him to shame with chops and technique, but he has such a natural, human groove. That can't ever be learned. You either have that or you don't.

I love Bonham for this reason. He, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones were literally communicating to each other through what they was playing through their improvisation. I will say they was at the time, and still the best rhythm section to date that still no one can touch. One can't say much about Bonham until they listen to all the live versions of them playing. There are so many gems on You Tube for all to hear what he did not prove on their records.
He for the most part had the same drum setup from late 68-80.A small kit to show off with. He only had one bass drum with amazing speed from one pedal, as many have got to have two bass drums, lots of toms, and cymbals to make them look like they are the master. I used to think the same way. I was stupid to think that way. For those who do not know Bonham did use two bass drums for a short period in 1969. I believe it was mainly Jimmy Page who made it known he thought two bass drums was too much for Zeppelin, "in other words", and that is why Bonham was seen with only one after that. I read that in an article somewhere.
To my ears some of Bonhams most amazing work was from 69-75, with some good moments in 77'. 79-80 was not bad, but his imagination was not there nearly as much showing off his capabilities. He understood how to tune his drums and let them "speak". Not muffle them to death, and cut a hole in the front bass drum head. That does annoy me to no end to see that. Bonham's bass drum boomed. Reading a Modern Drummer article years ago Bonham loved to yell "CANNONS!". I guess referring to the massive sound of his bass drum. Most drummers bass drums I hear these days go tick or pop. Awful.
Not only that he did not look as if he enjoyed playing like he used to. Probably why he did not perform Moby Dick, or as they called it in 1977 "Over The Top". Alcohol, and his sometimes weight gain off and on hurt his capabilities at the time. He hit his lowest in Nuremberg 1980 after he passed out after the first two numbers. He did sound he was getting it back together after that show, but his best days were behind him at that point. I have seen a couple pics just weeks before he died, and his arms just seemed so thin. I doubt he was in good health at that time. I am sure there is more info that may never get told to the rest of us about that.I just wish he was still alive and well so I could see how he would have been today if he would have cleaned up.

So, still a mystery. Still undefinable. Still elusive. No one can define why John Bonham was such a unique, wonderful, inspiring player. I started playing drums because of John Bonham and Stewart Copeland. To this day, no one can truly explain why their playing resonated so much. For me, it was Stewart's high-hat work, his improvs, and for Bonham, it was the fills he wrote, my all-time favorite being the one from Misty Mountain Hop, in the second chorus, where he builds upon what he did after the first verse, taking it from the toms to the snare and back again with such power. Still gives me goosebumps to this day. Thanks to both of you for giving me the gift of music, for making me want to play drums.

Uniqueness wise Dave Grohl cited two things. How hard he hit the skins. Really nobody close in his era in that regard other than Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell and Bill Ward. But then, he also did construction and hit with his hands which gave him a unique sound, and not many musicians moonlight on construction sites so he had masons hands. Yet, he loved jazz, Gene Krupa was a huge influence, so he also had touch, balance, and diversity unmatched by most in rock in his period. I took the time to answer the same question, and that's what I came up with.

Just can't understand why so many still rate Moon. He wasn't even a drummer. A show-off percussionist, yes.
But he never had the patience to keep time. Bonham relentlessly kept time, ALL the time and was so skilled that he could do all his fills and fancy footwork while never missing a back beat. Moon went missing so much that poor Ox had to do most of the time-keeping all by himself, while the old loon was hooning off, doing donuts and cartwheels around the drum kit.

The thing that fascinates me most about Led Zeppelin, is one band had Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham in it.
All four of them are widely considered in the top 5 of their chosen field.
Plant I would rank 2nd best rock singer - however his 69 to 72 vocals were godlike.
Number 1 on front man side of things. He practically defined Rock God and his sex appeal / image was off the charts.
Page - number 2/3 guitarist. Best riff maker and easily one of the best producers of all time of all time.
Jones- top 5 bassist, however when you add up how skilled he was for one man, top 3 or less.
    Bonham - number 1 - no question.
It weird to think that you probably have more of chance of winning the lottery 4 times than finding this line up again!

+stretch54 ...Spot on stretch. This is another variation of the Purdie Shuffle. One of the coolest grooves ever. Shuffle on the hihat with a pick up ghost note on the snare to give it a triplet sound. Jeff Porcaro (Toto) put his stamp on the groove by playing the Purdie shuffle on the hats and snare while playing the Bo Diddley beat on the kick on the song "Rosanna". Listen close and you'll be able to pick it out. Jeff also played a slight variation of it on the song "Mama" on the Hydra album. Two of my all-time favorites to play. Also, Steely Dan's "Babylon Sisters". I believe Bernard Purdie actually played both Babylon Sisters and Home At Last.

oldenmcgroen it's definitely Purdie on Home. Porcaro is a rock player, you can usually pick up his holding back a bit, especially on cymbals. Bernard=This IS his natural style of playing. He'll thrash away for enough $$$, but it's not where he lives.
This half shuffle must be a b*tch, if Pocaro explains it for 5 minutes, then does differently than he said it was, lol (still favorite, tho).
