- Led Zeppelin's legendary drummer John Bonham passed away from pulmonary aspiration on September 25th, 1980 after a day-long bout of binge drinking. Despite his reputation as a wild man, the rock star’s final days were full of anxiety, depression, and uncertainty that ultimately proved too much for him to bear.

The more creative you are, the more self critical you are. The two go up in equal amounts. If you're a true artist and not a megalomaniac. Some people want to be famous and powerful most. And you can do very creative things to get your fix

When you start to believe that "everyone is [better] than you"... That's Depression. That's agony and despair and pure pain. He should have stayed home with his supportive family but you can't change history... I feel for him, but especially his family who lost a somebody who obviously loved them very much.
I am on day four of being sober and an alcoholic for 15 years… it makes me so sad because I’ve watched many alcoholics die when they could have got help. Led Zeppelin has helped me through rough times in my life and I appreciate bonham from the depths of my soul I’m going to continue to be sober for him!
Alcohol has destroyed so many. Get a copy of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations...u need stoicism to approach your recovery. I'm that guy. Stay strong & best of luck.

I'm sure Karen Carpenter had great respect for John Bonham and knew he was the best, but what is sad is that both Bonham and Carpenter each had personal issues and each died tragically at a young age within a few years of each other. RIP to John and Karen, as both artists will never be forgotten.

He's the reason most people started playing the drums. He was a huge influence on my drumming. I'll never forget listening to Zeppelin for the first time as a kid and hearing those thundering drum grooves. RIP Bonzo.

It's heartbreaking to hear that he felt so inferior as a drummer, and that he harbored so many demons inside. Like Freddie Mercury, Bonzo is a legend in the rock genre. As far as I'm concerned, legends never die.
John Bonham's drumming lives rent free in my head. The amount of drummers nowadays who cite him as being their main inspiration is astounding. He really was one of the greatest. Fav: When The Levee Breaks

I was born too late to see John Bonham play live, but I had a vhs copy of “The Song Remains The Same” that I had completely worn out. I saved some money and bought tickets to see Page and Plant with my dad and on the way I listened to him tell about the time he went to see Zeppelin in the ‘70s and we blasted Led Zeppelin songs the whole way there and back, 100 miles each way. Definitely one of my best memories.
We watch that video twice a year
I live in Honolulu, Hawaii. The first concert I went to WAS Led Zeppelin. While they were popular, they didn't reach the peak of fame yet. As always, they put on an AWESOME show. They were the only performers as there was no opening act. What a great show!

I was "managing" a band in the 70's (really just helping out), and our drummer Phil was really talented. I asked if we could include "When The Levee Breaks" into band's repertoire, and he looked at me as if I was insane... "Only Bonham can do 5 different things with 2 hands and two legs!"

Had a ticket for their future Chicago show, I was a few weeks shy of getting to experience Zeppelin live when he passed away.
I had tickets for Buffalo.
I was waiting for tickets to go on sale.
I saw them in Cleveland in 1977 and had tickets for the tour they were prepping for when Bonham died.
It’s so sad that he was overwhelmed with anxiety at being away from his family and in response turned to a coping mechanism that took him away from them forever 😞

i read recently that D'yer Mak'er was Bonham's least favorite LZ song. He didn't like to play reggae.
Even worse than being away from his family while on tour, was the fact that he wasn't mentally and emotionally there with his family when he was drinking even though he was physically there with them.

John could play double bass with only one kick drum. A truly rare talent.
And that was only because he never realized other drummers were using two pedals. They guy was playing something no other drummer on the planet could. And still considered himself not good enough :(
What a sad place he was in. Thinking he was worthless on drums and now 40+ years later, no one disputes his greatness behind the kit.
Such a tragedy when a talented soul can’t see their worth. Time and time again people don’t understand how much they actually do for others.

The alcohol was likely a massive culprit in this tragedy. It raises one's anxiety levels to be involuntarily high across the board. That signature feeling of no escape, tunnel vision seeping in from the binges, it all breaks my heart. RIP Bonzo.

I dont feel qualified to comment, but zeppelin is a working class band. If a job doesn't work, just get drunk and dont show up. If your good you maybe can find another gig. Sadly the phenomenon of zeppelin led to a pushed commitment. 😓😪😰
It’s hard to believe or comprehend how someone can destroy their life with drugs and alcohol when you have nothing to be depressed about. You have a great family, you’re rich beyond your imagination and have everything going for you.
The entire world was blessed with such talented drummers such as Bonzo... to this day, there are still new generations inspired by his performances on record or live. A legacy that will remembered for a very very long time.
All time favorite band. Sad ending for a brilliant drummer.

Because being just 5'4", the audience couldn't see Karen Carpenter behind her drum kit while she was playing and singing. The decision was made to place her front and center at the mic. Former Mouseketeer, Cubby O'Brien took over on the kit. Karen never really liked being out in front like that. She was happiest sitting behind her drum kit.
Last I heard of Cubby, he was drumming for The Lion King on Bway.

Another case of a young life tragically ending prematurely. He was "#2" only because he let himself go. He missed the 27 Club by five years, but it sounds like his demise could have taken place sooner. What a loss, as a rock star, and more importantly a father. Zoe at 1, didn't have an impression, but Jason at 13 was surely devastated. RIP Bonzo
It's doubly disappointing because prior to this, Bonham had beaten a developing heroin addiction, having "dabbled" for several years...... only for alcohol to take him out. Never let anyone tell you that one 'substance' is worse or more dangerous than another..... alcohol can be a real demon.

I'm in my 60's & of course I've heard of Zepplin, but was more of a Motown Jazz/Fusion R&B Funk guy. I've heard Kashmir, Black Dog & Heartbreaker. I remember hearing Fool In The Rain also but never knew who sang any of these songs until I heard Fool in the Rain on the radio & called the station to find out who it was. My main attraction to the group was this powerful drummer & then having my co-workers tell me that he had died years ago & that was in 2007. That was a big blow to me because I had fallen in love with their music. R.I.P. BONZO

Growing up drumming Bonham was always my favourite drummer.
I fixed Robert’s toilet at the first Okeechobee festival. I had all the artist trailers plumbed except one… the one that Plant was put in when he showed up the night before. He really had to go. I helped make that happen for him. He was very polite. I got that Johnny working in double time for him!
JPJ has said in interviews that he was the one who discovered Bonzo dead and tried to shake him awake.

I was a kid then, my big brother had tickets to see them.. I can remember how he was bummed out that he died!!! He loved Led Zeppelin, I can't count how many times he saw them in concert?!?
What a tragic lesson in how we need to follow our own heart. He could have quit on the spot but didn’t listen to his soul. I feel sad for his wife and the pain she must’ve felt!

The pressure and responsibility of being in Led Zeppelin must have been massive. They were like gods. But at the end of the day they aren't gods, they're just people. RIP to John.
His son Jason and daughter Zoe must have been feeling bereft of family and grief-stricken at that point. Robert, too, never recovered in many ways. A tragedy for all. RIP John Henry Bonham!!!

Most drummers feel that they are not good enough. Bonham is my favorite drummer and I believe he is the GOAT! Drummers are wired different. Our brains are always triggering in different directions. All our limbs and fingers are doing different things at the same time. After 2 hours of playing drums, you are drenched in sweat and exhausted. I play for recreation and play Zep all the time. While I'm playing, I am always thinking that I'm not good enough to play in a band. I come from a musical family. My grandfather played drums, my dad played trumpet, and my brother played bass. We all sang. People tell me that I sound really good. It's just something messed up with drummers. It's something in our heads. I'll call it for Zeppelin's best song. Achille's Last Stand! I do play it. It's tough!

It's a tragedy that men always see their value by utility. He was deserving of love and I wish he knew that even if he quit the band he'd still be one of the greatest ever.
I think he was very loved, and he had a wife and two babies at home. He didn't want to leave his family and go on tour. And drinking was his way of coping with any negative emotions.

Just because someone CAN do something, and do it well, doesn't mean they want to. Sounds like he wanted to retire and enjoy his family way before the end of the band. It's sad that he doubted his own abilities. He was one of the best and in my top 2 of all time..

I was born in 1965, but I remember my older brother telling me all about Bonham. We partied hard through the late 70's all the way up to the mid 2000's...lol :P Love Me Some Zeppelin, Zeperella is pretty neat too :)

For real he was the foundation of their sound. He was like thunder and lightning. Each member was just as important.
The Who didnt hesitate to replace Keith Moon, but John Bonhams intensely powerful drumming was quite simply irreplaceable.
Nobody is irreplaceable.
The Who were never even close to being the same after Moonie died. No replacement drummer ever came close to replicating his sound and style behind the kit. Led Zeppelin obviously weren't as greedy as The Who were (and are) and decided to call it quits instead of carrying on and risking the intergrity of their live performances and overall sound. They were very wise to do so.
John Bonham, you made me want to play the drums. You have been my inspiration. No doubt about this.

As someone cursed with the disease I say in good faith it wasn't one day of binge drinking that killed him and it wasn't a fear of the upcoming touring that upset him it was the idea that performing would cut into his drinking time.
I had the opportunity to see them play both the Mpls and Saint Paul shows in the 70's...one of the loudest I ever heard... RIP...

Bonzo defined Rock Drumming. Being compared to him in playing style many times throughout the years is a huge compliment.
Led Zeppelin is one of my favourite bands! It's hard to pick just one tune that, in my opinion, is the best. So, my top five are:
1. Over the Hills and Far Away
2. Tangerine
3. Going to California
4. The Ocean
5. Fool in the Rain
The song, Over the Hills and Far Away, is my absolute FAVOURITE song ever! It's unique and gives me a feeling of nostalgia every time I listen to it. On a groovy side note, my 2nd tattoo was in honor of Led Zeppelin. Thank you, John Bonzo Bonham, for sharing your compelling drumming talent with the world. The pressures of touring has really been a problem for a lot of rock stars and groups. The Beatles were happy to stop. John Kay talks about Steppenwolf’s problems stemming from it in his autobiography. Many others have talked about it.
I wager that Bonham might have recovered if he had retired, or maybe taken a much longer sabbatical.

He hated the touring & travelling that took him away from his family & home for long periods - many others in successful touring bands have also felt that way. One thing that has not changed much in the music biz is that doing live shows is how these people make their money - LZ had a big advantage in that they sold so many records that they made more than most just from that - but doing long, worldwide tours was still seen as necessary to keep record sales strong. Nobody could drum like he did - his combination of power & speed was the gold standard that others could only be envious of - RIP Bonzo ..
I recently quit my job because all the traveling kept me away from my family. Drinking and abusing drugs to cope with the anxiety was taking a toll on my well being. I got a new job and have been sober since. I don't make half as much as I was, but I get to come home to my kids everyday. Sometimes I even take off an hour early to pick them up from school, can't put a price on things like that.
He was only 32...yet he drank more than 10 regular people do in their whole lifetimes...

That just tells me that you don't know drummers. To say she was better than Bonzo is debatable, but she's up there with some of the best ever. The feel, timing, speed and precision she possessed was incredible.

As a former service member, I can relate to Bonham's anxiety with leaving his family. Over the years I found myself having major separation anxiety in the military, and it got worse with every rotation or deployment, or simple exercises. I never turned to drinking though. I can understand that horrible dread though.
I feel so sad hearing how badly he was struggling with the thought of being away from his family. At this time, it sounds like he didn't want the glamorous rockstar life with groupies.
He wanted to be at home. With his wife, his son, his baby daughter. He wanted to be around the love he had built for himself. And he didn't know how to cope except abuse alcohol.
As important as Led Zeppelin is, I wish he had been able to drop everything and go home.
I think the 'being away from the family' is too simplistic a reason. It was only going to be a month after all. H suffered from chronic depression, anxiety and was an alcoholic....add a drug addict.....I don't see what else you can call those habits. He drank and took drugs to cope and the more he drank the more depressed he probably felt. it's a vicious circle. He had issues and they finally killed him.

Man I can't honestly imagine being in either poor John Paul Jones's or Benji Leveree's position that day and to discover one of your best friends/best drummer in the world laying dead in bed and then having to go tell somebody like Robert Plant and Jimmy Page about it has to always be the most stressful and traumatic thing to do ever. I would be pale as a sheet to announce the tragic news like that.
