      But she's not. Like some of the clickbait channels you are just over exaggerating it. Maybe watch the Saga again for some of the Leia/Padme sences. It's hinted that Holdo is. Doesn't bother me. Rose and this new cast member. Have yet to hear about that.
      As Hellogreedo put it. You are making a mountain out of a molehill.

      Also, both the Original/Sequel trilogies and TCW never went fully at a side of the political compass, they could sometimes be pro-democracy and sometimes show the corrupt side of democracy. Now they're just left leaning always

    You should watch the recent Lucas interview where confirms what you said: that to him Sci-Fi is primarily a vehicle for a message, and that Star Wars itself was meant to be anti-populist, anti-imperialist, and anti-authoritarian.

    • @DarthMerlin
      @DarthMerlin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The criticism isn't that Star Wars contains political messaging. It's that TFA and TLJ do it in a hamfisted way that is obviously shoehorned and not at all subtle.

      All of this had potential for a very good and strong trilogy after the OT, the idea behind the creation of the Empire is simple but it could be very compelling on the big screen if it's done right. Sadly, the execution ended up being poor (IMO).
      It's just funny to see these people on social media getting butthurt about it, specially the "I have no ideology, I believe in individualism and politics get very boring to me, I see it everywhere, geez". Sure, I'm not familiarized with that type of thinking, but usually the people who I've met, they've been not so kind.

    • @beck1328
      @beck1328 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Alex Arriaga it doesn’t make sense. I mean I can see what Lucas is saying but as a kid it seemed like it was more close to Hilter’s rise to power and the changes Germany went through as a whole. IMO I think the prequels were too abstract from then reality to be heavy commentary that and I think George just said it was commentary after the fact

    Oh no, I'm not brave enough for politics.
    Edit: On a serious note, Star Wars has always had political undertones.
    The OT was anti-authoritan/anti-populist, inspired by the tyranny and dictatorship displayed during the Vietnam War.
    The prequels were made during the Iraq war, and had lines that were clearly meant to parallel George Bush, (If you're not with me, then you're my enemy) with an entire subplot about a free democracy being transformed into a facist dictatorship. (This is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause.)
    The new trilogy's messages about anti-capitalism and the fleeting loss of hope during dark times are nothing new. You just completely missed the subtext of the media you consumed growing up. Those stories have always been political; and you're simply more observant and critical now that you're an adult.
    Superman is about inclusion, about an illegal immigrant coming to a strange land and how his influence changes society. Spider-Man is about not letting power get to your head, and using strength to benefit and show compassion to others. Star Trek is about social justice, and a socialist utopia driven by science. Harry Potter is about racism, the idea of genetic superiority. If these franchises can be political, why not Star Wars?

      Jakeipoo Look, I'm not trying to get super heavy in HGs comments, but is Capitalism really a good thing? The tradeoffs for the luxuries we always point to are so high, I really do wonder. Is it worth me having a brand new television if the person who made it can't afford to eat? Is it ok that if I get sick and can't work, I'm simply thrown off as though I am a broken cog in a machine, unable to produce profit for another?
      We point to luxuries and say, "This. This is why Capitalism is good." Yet we also use those luxuries to dismiss the very legitimate criticisms of the economic system itself, and the social systems that arise there in. This isn't a black and white argument: just because Capitalism has major downsides doesn't mean it doesn't have upsides, and the same could be said for it's inverse, Communism. I'm an anarchist myself. I don't know what's right, but I know what I feel is right, and I feel that Capitalism just isn't good anymore. Sorry.

  • @brandonkrol
    @brandonkrol 5 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    Complaining about the politics in the sequel trilogy is downright hypocritical. Especially if you’re a prequel fan. Hell, Rian Johnson wasn’t even criticizing capitalism in The Last Jedi. He was criticizing war profiteering, animal cruelty, and child labour. And he wasn’t even criticizing any single politician like Lucas was in the movies that he made. I didn’t like Canto Bight either, but complaining about the political message of the sequence while praising the prequels and original trilogy when the political messages in those films are way more on the nose is pure hypocrisy.

      ClarkusMarkus it’s not just that, for me personally they are lazy reboots of the originals and therefore mediocre and disappointing movies

    • @ClarkusMarkus
      @ClarkusMarkus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Pax Auror
      They aren't reboots at all, though. A reboot would be that they completely removed the previous films from canon to create new ones from the beginning, which they didn't do. The Force Awakens is similar to A New Hope, yes, but there are more differences than similarities, and the reason many of those similarities exist is to play with people's nostalgia. I also don't find them mediocre at all. They aren't Bladerunner 2049 or 2001 A Space Odyssey, but they are still very well made movies despite the flaws they have. The acting works 90% of the time, the cinematography is great, especially in The Last Jedi, the costume, set and prop design is amazing, thr soundtracks are beautiful, and the cgi is great.

    • @paxauror5585
      @paxauror5585 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ClarkusMarkus while I do agree with cgi and costume (of course they are good, the movies are financed by Disney) I totally disagree with the originality, they destroyed the new republic just to get back to the empire vs rebellion thing, plus there’s another sand, forest, white, planet, the clothes, the ships, the uniforms, everything is just the same, they copied even the big Death Star thing, I would’ve be surprise if by the time episode 9 is released, a starkiller base 2 appears, but you will all call it one of the best Star Wars movies because it’s called Star Wars

      Your definition of "alive" and the definition of "alive" held by a droid would be most likely vastly different.
      We will have to re-examine this topic ourselves in a few years to decades, but for now that's really irrelevant.
      That said, I do agree that saying "droid lives matter" would be pretty tasteless. It would mean using the struggles of a real minority (whether you agree with the speifics of BLM or not) as a tool to not bother with world- and character-building in the movie, especially if this was done for a joke.

    • @sertaki
      @sertaki 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the games in the Deus Ex franchise, "Mankind Divided" already did this, featuring an opressed class of cyborgs (the augmented or "augs"). They used the slogan "Aug lives matter" in in-game protests etc and thought it was a clever commentary on the real situation ... but completely forgot to actually include relevant content, so it came off as using a minority group's struggle as a ploy to save time during worldbuilding and writing.

      Thomad 90 no, the people who said that star wars is dead during the time of the prequels are the same people who want george Lucas back.
      Also, no one said that the prequels was sjw propaganda.

    • @christianpaystrup4427
      @christianpaystrup4427 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thomad 90 -sigh- 🙄 Oh great this argument again. I’ll just put it like this...
      Sometimes people complain about different things than others, and sometimes opinions change. On top of that, people overtime change the way they look at things. Now personally, I do think the prequels get a lot of hate (but I do think they’re still not good films. The sequels have more just caused sort of rift while the prequels were just generally disliked overall. People have different stances on things.) It isn’t about hypocrisy.
      Hypocrisy is pretending to have higher standards than is the case. So, everyone is a hypocrite. I’m a hypocrite. You’re a hypocrite. That guy down the road from you is a hypocrite. It’s completely different than how your phrasing it.
      A person can have an opinion, and can have their opinion change overtime. It’s not about the people who disliked the prequels and like the sequel trilogy are a bunch of hypocrites who won’t accept that the “sequel trilogy is ‘killing Star Wars.’” It’s about opinions, and it’s okay for a person to dislike something while liking something else.
      The people who like the sequels aren’t hypocrites. All the hypocrisy argument is is a cheap way to state how you disliked the person’s video explaining why they like the films more than you did while you looked at it like the prequels. If you hate the Sequel trilogy, whatever. But don’t accuse people for being hypocrites unless they are actually being hypocrites. The only real hypocrite I know of right now in film criticism is Grace Randolph, but that may just be me.
      Other than that, can we stop with this argument?

    The Fathiers in TLJ; is anyone challenged by being told that animal abuse is wrong? When you present the opposition of animal abuse as a "bold" position all you're achieving is underestimating the audience.

      Audun Olsen No but what is challenging is bringing up the idea that 'good' and 'evil' are not that different from each other, strip away the ideology and all you're left with is people killing each other. The focus shouldn't be on blowing stuff up rather it should be on the preservation of life.

I'm very disappointed with this fanbase, to the point where It makes it hard to enjoy SW. But, I know there are still very nice people around. My question is, how do you deal with this negativity? How do you ignore it? I'm having a hard time doing so. Everything is plagued with people who are either complaining about Disney, Lucasfilm, or writing death wishes to anyone related to modern SW.
    BTW this video was excellent haha.

I don't know one person in real life that hasn't had a blast watching the new films. Hating things that are worldwide phenomena is just the modern trend. Has nothing to do with politics imo, and anyone claiming it's the political messaging in the new films that's the problem, obviously haven't watched a Star Wars film before.

    Music, movies, games, everything ever made in pop culture has had some amount of political messaging or commentary. Fun fact the song "Blackbird" by Paul McCartney was written in response to the Civil rights movement of the 1960s. Bird is British slang for "girl" "blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly"
    A British musician spoke up about racism in America through his art.

    You'd think people would have learned, in some cases the hard way, the perils and pitfalls of over-theorizing and incessant speculation.
    To me, it's clear that unhealthy expectations were the primary reason for the recent, "backlash," and division in Star Wars fandom.
    Although our level of scrutiny of every slight detail is definitely a reflection of our love for the content, the more we invest in a hypothesis, the more we're subjecting ourselves to disappointment when it is ultimately proven wrong.
    The higher your hopes, the further you'll fall.
    In a continuing effort to temper my own expectations, and keep my, "head Canon," clear of rumors and clickbait gossip, I've decided to unsubscribe to most Star Wars channels.
    With a few exceptions, of course.
    From now on, the ONLY TH-cam channels I subscribe to, that in any way have anything to do with, "Star Wars," are going to be;
    (In order of credibility/preference)
    ▫️The official, "Star Wars," TH-cam channel, (naturally)
    (for all legitimate news)
    ▫️Star Wars Explained
    (for all expert Canon/Legends information)
    ▫️Mr Sunday Movies/the Weekly Planet
    (for quality comedy and fun)
    ▫️Spacedock
    (because Pablo Hidalgo doesn't have his own channel)
    ▫️HelloGreedo
    (for the essential Star Wars reviews/opinions, mainly Clone Wars and Rebels)
    And that's it.

    I think the main reason a lot of people were angry at Canto Bight was because of how utterly pointless it was. I mean, those horses they saved had literally nowhere to go. They're on an island. They'll be recaptured 5 minutes after. That basically made their whole 'heroic act' pointless. Save the enslaved children, you say? Nah. We'll save a bunch of animals instead. I don't mind the political messaging. But they go about it in such a sloppily written way that I can't help but be angry at it.

    It’s not a coincidence that for the first prequel film Lucas himself named the most prominent minion to the main antagonist after Newt Gingrich. It’s not a coincidence that he made an organization of corrupt bankers one of the antagonists of the Clone Wars. It’s not a coincidence that he had a female sex slave kill her own “master” on-screen in RotJ. It’s not a coincidence that the big baddies of the original trilogy, the Galactic Empire were directly based on Nazi Germany. It’s not a coincidence that Lucas gave prominent roles to both women and black men in BOTH the original trilogy and prequel trilogy.
    George Lucas has always been by his own admission a Liberal.
    Anyone who suddenly “thinks” Disney is just interjecting politics into Star Wars when it wasn’t there before is either in denial or simply flat out lying.

    I hate Alec Baldwin. Like, I think he's a truly bad person. But goddammit, he's good at what he does. On 30 Rock and his appearances on SNL, always made me laugh. It's true, people. You really can dis-associate entertainment from reality. It's why entertainment is there.
    The problem now is, everyone has a keyboard and an opinion, and as that has grown so, too, has grown this narcissistic viewpoint that "if you don't agree with me you suck, and I'm going to tell you about it." There are people who get up in the morning looking for something to get pissed off at. That's no way to live life.

Just like SJW's can't help but view everything through their ideological lens - the same holds true for the opposition.

    People think Star ‘Wars’ shouldn’t have politics, I don’t think they truly comprehend what they’re watching, war is impossible to separate from politics, and to add that, the new movies are surprisingly apolitical. There’s no mention of senate proceedings. There’s no George Lucas outright saying the bad guy is Richard Nixon.
