I did a double batch I think looking back I had 5 cups of water not the 4 so that is why the taters were a lil more runnier than normal easy to fix with a lil more instant potatoes. I wish I had been doing it like this all along I really like them and makes for a simple meal side. Have you dont your instant potatoes like this before?

I 100% prefer fresh or frozen mashed, but then that requires me to cook, mash and then serve :) sometimes Instant even with adding this ( I did add more flakes) they were a tad runny its just easier. Maybe one day when life is not as busy I can do what I need to do ya know

Yes I have done that also I use to use like corn starch with my tater soup and Marks sis was staying with us and she suggested that instant potatoes and I am like ewwww and wow was I ever WRONG!!! I love seeing recommendations for videos I probably would never see. You remind me of my mom so much and this is probably a video she would make if she were on TH-cam. Her first video would probably be Shit On A Shingle (frozen chicken cooked in cream of chicken with a side of whatever noodle we had) or Tater Tot Casserole (tots with cream of (whatever we had) a can of corn, cheese and pretty much whatever you had to make a meal to last a few days).
awww well that is sweet and sounds like your Mom and myself can toss things together. Do you still like to eat that way? Did this just show up on your suggestions? I do love SOS I dont make mine with chicken but that does sound yummy and I am not sure if I have made tater tot casserole but I have made different forms of like Shepard's pie. Love my instant potatoes. I like to make them a tad thicker and sometimes I’ll add shredded cheese to them as it’s making as well.
The cheese would be great and I told Robert I normally make thicker it didnt seem that thin till I was eating it I did add more flakes to the left overs and those turned out just perfect! Thanks Alesia
We love homemade mashed potatoes but here lately we have been eating instant.. YUM.. add a bit of cream cheese for that slight tang.. yes! I’ve done it your way also with some green onions and bacon bits.. SLURP❤

I totally agree! I added more to the left overs for Marks lunch it didnt seem soo super thin till I was eating it. Still tasted good it seems I am out of sorts trying to make videos I have been just doing normally and I get on film and everything goes crazy. I also wanted to say besides my other comment that when I make my instant potatoes, I put dehydrated, onions and freeze dried chives in to taste. I can’t claim that that is my original idea. My mother did it once when my husband and I stopped off at my mom and dad‘s house, and that’s the only way that my husband would eat mashed potatoes because he did not like them. Also, my two grandsons won’t eat mashed potatoes any other way. If I put dehydrated onions in and the reason why I say that is because sometimes I’ve forgotten to put them in I start the water out with the onions in and the chives also. Then I would bring it to the boil and then make the potatoes like you said. They really are very good.
I have LOTS of dehydrated onions and chives. Do you mix the milk or water or what do you mix to rehydrate the potatoes this sounds amazing and I do want to try this on my next batch please let me know about the liquid. And thanks for the other response Barbara :)
What I do is say I would use maybe a quarter of a cup of milk for the amount of potatoes that you were using. I would put the amount of onions and chives in and I would soak that for about 15 minutes or until the onions are rehydrated, then I would go ahead and make your potatoes according to the directions that you are using. Also, when I have made a single batch for myself, I’ve used onion powder when I didn’t have dehydrated, onions and I would use the chives also. The chives are easier to use than the onions, of course because the onions are say harder than the chives and takes longer for them to rehydrate. I’m so glad to help you with this. So your saying like the pack of potatoes per say = 2 cups of water how much milk would you use for that? I LOVE the thought of onions I know I do use the garlic herb ones in the packages
@ are you using the plain potato flakes. If you use 2 cups of the flakes, I would use about 2 tablespoons of the minced onions and the same with the chives. I think it’s trial and error because I don’t know how strong you would like the flavor of your potatoes. I would use about a half a cup of milk for the 2 cups of potato flakes. I am from the village of: in Saint Joe County. It’s about 15 miles from the city of Coldwater.

My potatoes go bad so fast. I love Idahoan instant potatoes and no one knows they're instant. Well, if i look at the box...they are real potatoes lol.
Are you storing your potatoes and onions together or close by? I know that was causing a lot of mine to go bad. And yes I have the Idahoan in bulk so that works also :) Potatoes do go bad pretty easy now a days that is for sure!

@ I fix reg mashed potatoes, butter, milk and then I add the cream cheese. I fix them ahead of time and put them in a casserole sprinkle with paprika and bake

Sorry nothing absolutely nothing beats real mashed. Potatoes need to be thick, creamy and buttery. They also need the ability to hold their shape so when you make that little well (indent) with the gravy ladle it holds all that delicious gravy. If your strapped for time and in a hurry I guess you can doctor up instant mashed but your family -actually everyone you cook for- deserves REAL mashed potatoes.
I do 100% agree that real mashed potatoes is hands down the best. But there are times I dont have fresh or they went bad and you know 1 trip to the store to even get a bag of taters ends up being 100 bucks! These were too runny I did fix the left overs that the hubs packs for lunch. Normally mine do not look this runny as you can see if you have watched other videos with me using instant. I think this day and age with prices and time and everything any food we can make up is helpful for the family. I am sure each and every one of us have served something to our families we wish we didnt or didnt want to. I do like to try to pre make the real taters and do a great job with it all and freeze so its easier to just warm up. But that sometimes is just not possible. Thanks for your wonderful comment.
I make mine with half and half , skip the water. Everyone thinks I use real potatoes.

@@nessasnook Yes, but prefer the half and half. My grandson always wants to take the leftovers home so I usually make extra for him.
You know that is going to have to make me try this right :) So I take it you make your instant taters on the stove with the warmed half and half and then proceed with adding the amount of instant you need. You dont add anything else other than the half and half?
