My eighth grade U.S. history teacher told this story to my class one day and I never forgot it. She taught at her podium every day. She would get into the stories. She would lean out towards us as she emphasized important storylines. The whole podium would tilt at a 45 degree angle as she did.🤓 I had goosebumps as she re-enacted John White searching the the abandoned settlement at Roanoke for life. As she did, she turned around, picked up her chalk, and wrote “Croatoan” out on the chalkboard.. dum, dum, dum... Mrs. McDaniel, you were the Best teacher I have had. No one has ever come close! Mr. Ballen, You are a master story teller. I hope you never run out of stories!
One of my favorite mysteries! I used to teach 8th grade US history and I'd tell my class a similar tale as you, and then we'd brainstorm all the possibilities. In 1999 I visited Roanoke and during the informational meeting the park ranger asked the audience to share their theories and then he patiently went through each scenario, sometimes illuminating additional facts or playing devil's advocate. Finally some one said, "Alien abduction" and the audience all laughed. He calmly explained that he'd thought a lot about that and "at this point it's as plausible as anything else." I no longer teach US History, but every couple of years I check to see if anything is new and I'm never disappointed: the discovery of site X, all the archeological excavations which have uncovered 16th century artifacts on both site X and Hatteras Island, there's the Lost Colony DNA study, drones with Lidar, archeologists with magnetometers. I am so hoping that the mystery is unraveled and solved in my life time!
Hi Alicia, if you're looking for current developments there's a book by Scott Dawson published in 2020 called The Lost Colony and Hatteras Island.. it seems to crack the case. "The legend of the Lost Colony has been captivating imaginations for nearly a century. When they left Roanoke Island, where did they go? What is the meaning of the mysterious word Croatoan? In the sixteenth century, Croatoan was the name of an island to the south now known as Hatteras. Scholars have long considered the island as one of the colonists' possible destinations, but only recently has anyone set out to prove it. Archaeologists from the University of Bristol, working with local residents through the Croatoan Archaeological Society, have uncovered tantalizing clues to the fate of the colony. Hatteras native and amateur archaeologist Scott Dawson compiles what scholars know about the Lost Colony along with what scholars have found benath the soil of Hatteras."--Publisher's description.
@@georgeedelblute6282 Yeah, think most of the pieces were put together. It was believed to be a mixture of starvation, possibly battle and a large group of the colonists ending up with a group of near by natives. I also remember the group looking for them wasn't able to sail south to the island in a reasonable time frame and it kind of built up the mystery even though it seems like it was far more straight forward than people building it up would imply.
@M A Yeah, actually i was the same as you and curious about those passages as well. I asked my grandparents about it as they're pretty well versed with scripture and it makes sense in context with the rest of the chapters. The verses alone stand out, but make sense when you read the entire chapter and book.
@@cal4207 To be fair, we wiped out a lot more than their Buffalo supply, what US history likes to glaze over during the civil war the native Americans held slaves and as such were convinced to join the confederacy as an ally force. When the Union defeated the confederacy as a punishment for the native Americans taking up arms against the US they were stripped of their land that they had been given when relocated to Oklahoma and any hold outs that hadn’t yet been relocated were. They were clearly punished more harshly than the southerners.
Whenever I heard of this it was never mentioned that there was an island with that name. It was always just: there's a settlement that disappeared and that word was found carved in wood and nobody knows what happened. You learn something new every day.
This is what I learned too. Like, there was this mystery about the word and now I wonder why since it was the name of an actual island 50 miles south. Wish Mr. Ballen had been my history teacher

Hi John, several years ago there was an archeological dig across the river from the Roanoke Colony. They found evidence of possible survivors or captives from the colony there. They (the first nation peoples') also were mining copper there. It was an interesting documentary. I don't recall what channel it was broadcast on? Thanks for the great stories, I love this one myself! God bless you and your family, brother!

Im trying to figure out how the hell 100 men killed a whole tribe of native americans without even one supposedly dying in the fight...that cant be true
Don't know if Mr Ballin will actually read this but I have also been very interested in this particular case most of my life since I heard of it as a teenager and recently heard that among the croatoan Indians there are several with blue eyes and several with family names and surnames that you can find among the original habitants of Roanoke Island and their genetic blood scans turned up English ancestry as part of their DNA for many of these croatoan Indians currently living. It is believed that to survive they went to live with the croatoan Indians and ended up intermarrying with them and were assimilated into the tribe. Something that would definitely be worth researching.
This is well documented. I was surprised it wasn't in the story he told. I learned of this in a illustrated history story book when I was 7... 35 years ago.
That doesn't necessarily mean that the "lost colony" went to Croatoan, though. It could mean that a handful to up to roughly 1/3 of the colonists ended up there or alternatively, that other English folk eventually ended up there & assimilated with the indigenous population, because without more specific genetic analysis, there's no way to know whether those with the same last names as some of the colonists actually descended from those colonists or from later arrivals of English people with the same last name OR who mixed with much later arrivals of English or other people with English heritage & intermarried into modern families with those last names but who had very little or no recent genetic link to the colonists themselves. Just sayin', I like to consider all objective possibilities until additional info comes to light or I finally learn about it lol.
I'm from N.C. and all that I was ever taught about the missing colony was they had wrote Croatoan on a tree..I never heard of any of the other things that were discovered relating to it..This video was very informative(as they always are)
Been following this story since grammar school. This is the best explanation. Whatever happened wasn't pleasant. Was not a good idea to kill the native people that helped them.
I'm multiracial. I had my (The government still calls it this) American Indian Blood Quantum Level blood test done early in life, my surname is a Tribal word, my blood Quantum Level s are predominantly native American, 13 different tribes, so still a mix. In school my family was the only known Native American family enrolled at that school. When I learned about Roanoke my teacher was very nervous and everyone turned to look at me like I was the appointed tribal ambassador, any mention of "Indian" boom, all eyes on me. Every head in class turned looking at me. I just put my hand up. "We actually prefer the term Native American. I know it's in the book but could you call us Native Americans...no big deal." Then I quickly learned that no matter what color skin the other kids in my class had they were a bunch of assholes. As a boy named Mark who I know had a Caucasian mother, we lived in the same apartment block, and a black father looked at me and said at the top of his lungs "You mean red savages." And he got a laugh. I waited for my teacher to do anything. She didn't. (Public school in a dirt poor neighborhood. Looking back she really wasn't paid enough to care. Looking back at that moment I think she was silent because she was thinking, I can honestly make more being a waitress and put up with less obnoxious people.) Then it became laughing and what are now known as slurs being chanted. I remember my family always giving me the you are an American mix. You are Native American, you are part black, you are part white, basically every race that hated each other and has prejudices against each other you are. Those prejudices still exist. Don't expect to be accepted by any race. You are a mix and you will always be, to them, an outsider. If anyone says something about what you are, remember you are the American dream. Your family exists because of diversity. You are not us or them. You are all. Never let someone who is also an American forget or think that you are less than they are. People only put others down because they need to feel more powerful than someone. Human nature. People will not accept you but you. But you are not allowed to allow anyone to put you down for what you are. You stand up for yourself even if you stand alone. Then I stood up thinking at that age, I'm about to get kicked out of school. I shouted the teacher's last name I made it very clear that was a Polish name. He ancestors at some point came to America seeking freedom and a better life. I went through every kid's surname I could, pointing out they either came here to America or had to Come to America. My family has been in America, since before the American revolution. We have fought on every war. Call me Indian. Call me Savage. Call me red skin. Call me all of that in class. Most of your asses wouldn't be American citizens of it wasn't for families like mine. I am not going to tell a single slur back at you. It's only insulting my people to pick on your races. You are all American....you are also trash. I picked up my book bag, walked right to the principal's office, explained what happened. Inside I was thinking get me the hell out of here now, but I just requested that my mom be called as I didn't feel safe do to being called slurs because of my ethnicity. My teacher was shortly in the principal's office talking to him as I was nervously waiting for my highly protective, product of a mixed race marriage, proud of being mixed mom to come collect me, as I wanted to cry as I was just a child but I had to stand up for myself. Stand strong even if I stood alone. One person army. Show no weaknesses. By the time my mom got there and was ready to verbally destroy anyone who got in her path, yank her kids out of that school, and possibly whip a shoe at someone. I was like, I need out of this school now! Nope. Turns out the principal was very upset because his mother was Apache. He took this personally. He was terrifying. Just in his normal mood. At least to a kid. So I was like, yo. I can just walk home. It's fine. The principal is pissed. I thought he was pissed at me. I made my play, "no need to tell at me Sir. My mom will most likely yank me out of this school. I'll be gone. Your face is actually purple and the veins are popping out. Please tell at an adult. I'm ready to go home." He wasn't mad at me. He was mad that kids who had special presentations to learn about their ancestors, how their ancestors not only got to America and about their cultural identities were openly being racist. But the teacher did nothing. So I got a few days off school. My mom spoke to Mark's parents. Which got heated. When I got back to school my principal had all the students assemble in the gym. There was a talk about what happened. While that was happening I was checking the exits. Them he said the whole school was going to learn about Native Americans, our culture, we were going to have guest speakers and presentations. I stand by what I said as a kid to my classmates. All of you who either came to America or were taken here. You all are Americans now. I don't know where the people that posted this are from. If you are an American. Shut up. Chances are your ancestors came here. If you are a citizen don't think any native person of any tribe needs you to speak for us. We can speak for ourselves. The American government did horrific things to Native people it's not like the settlers were the only groups of people that tried to end Native Americans. If you are an American citizen and you wrote "your people" as a jab using the mistreatment of native Americans as a put down, you are an American, The United States Government did a hell of a lot to Native Americans, so YOUR PEOPLE, did it too. As an American our government has a lot of blood on its hands so don't use native Americans and what we have gone through as a way to trash someone else. Native Americans can speak for themselves. If you aren't one shut up. If you are an American citizen, shut up.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous people of the area have been saying for literally centuries, in their oral histories, that the colonists were integrated into one of the local Indigenous groups.
Great video! As it happens, I researched this story extensively in 1997 for the original version of the series Unsolved Mysteries. Alas, we never filmed the segment but I've been fascinated by the story ever since. I haven't read many of the comments so this may be redundant, but from what I recall (and I'm a little vague now on some details) the Lumbee tribe of North Carolina has claimed for decades, perhaps centuries, that they assimilated the Roanoke settlers. They pointed to the frequency of blue eyes in their family trees as one indication, and more recent studies have noted other genetic similarities with European heritage and even language patterns.
My 5th great grandfather (James Whitaker) was the first permanent white settler in Ohio. He was captured by Wyandot Indians in Pennsylvania and brought to Ohio along with other white men who were also captured. The Indians killed all the white men captives in a course of 'run the gauntlet'. However, my grandfather survived the course with little to no injury's and the Wyandot Warriors adopted him and called him their "son". My grandfather met my grandmother who was also a Wyandot captive. The Indians gave them their blessings to marry and, as a wedding gift, gave them 1280 acres of prime farm land near the lake. He become a respected trader with the Indians and could speak their tongue, and was the first educator of the region. Point I am trying to make is it is very possible the Indians probably didn't slaughter the women and children and may have befriended any 'brave' men who they grew to respect.
The Lumber Tribe isn’t an actual tribe. They have fake numbers when putting down the population of the tribe. I live close to the Virginia border in North Carolina. So, you asked for theories about the colony, and after listening to your video, here’s mine. What was left of the settlement after the Indian raids, probably had to leave in a hurry. They found themselves outgunned (so to speak), and probably had initially intended to go to Croatoan in the south. Hence that’s we’re the carved clues pointed. Then either one of two things happened: 1) They went to the Island in the south, and found it equally inhospitable as Roanoke (Or possibly already occupied by native Americans who were ready to kill them). Then they defaulted to plan ‘B’ which was settling to the north. Or 2) They tried going south, but normally strong and unpredictable winds from the south blew them north anyways, much like it did with one of the earlier colony ships. In either case, their immediate concern was likely just plane survival and they weren’t as concerned with (or never got the opportunity) to go back to Roanoke and correct their tree-carved mistake. The others settlement could have later been attacked, and the remnants either killed or integrated into the local tribes…. most likely both. Great video’s MRBallen. Glad you found your calling.
Learning about the lost colony--in 8th grade--began a life long love of history (and mysterious history is my favorite). Thank you for covering this one.
I knew some of the descendants of Roanoke survivors. Taught them in high school. The survivors went south. Ended up in Robeson County and Scotland County NC as well as some of the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. They were adopted by the tribe Lumbee. Some of the descendants today have bright white hair some have blue eyes, some dark skin some white, some brown eyes, some brown hair some black hair. The tribe has a lot of archeological evidence in the area, a state college in Pembroke. They finally have Federal recognition as a tribe and are working to get a reservation. They have a tradition of having adopted the survivors of Roanoke by verbal history as well as escaped slaves. They also have a Pow Wow every year which the public is invited to. Unfortunately their native language has not survived. They do have a distinctive ways of using certain words in a pattern (patois), a slight accent.
I had a suspicion that the settlers (or at least some of them) would have joined the natives eventually, I mean it makes sense from a survival point of view especially.
Yes! My sister in law told me they just merged into the Lumber tribe. Some of those last names still persist. Lots of Smiths and Locklear.. anyway, they just moved from VA to NC
When he was telling the part about how if there was a message with just a place name and no cross, they had left willingly, it suddenly dawned on me that CRO may be the first three letters of CROATOAN, but they're also the first three letters of CROSS. What a twist that would be.
Yeah, once he said that if they wrote cross they were forced to go there, I thought Cro had to be the first three letters of Cross. I believe They said Cro because they didn't have enough time to finish writing the word cross. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that
Indians: "Ok, this clearly isn't working out, we'll just leave the island to you and keep our distance.. good luck" Pilgrims: "So anyways, I started blasting"

I grew up in North Carolina and "The Lost Colony" was so much a part of the North Carolina folklore. Of course the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh, is named after Sir Walter. For years, every Summer there was an ongoing open air theater production of The Lost Colony, not sure if it still exists. The Outer Banks of North Carolina are a very special place. I recall camping out there with my Dad. Kill Devil Hill, where the Wright's were "first in flight," . .the huge dunes build by the wind. . . the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" at Cape Hatteras, the wild ponies running free. . the hordes of Drum fisherman in October. . truly a magical place. Another special place there is Ocracoke Island. The people there maintain a unique island culture and even still speak with a slight Elizabethan English accent. . .at least they did back in the 1970's. . .The Outer Banks. . .quite unique and unspoiled place.
Ocracoke Island is the summer home of the super rich. It's a 3 hour ferry ride from the mainland of Hyde County. The homes are $1 million plus. Very restrictive place
@E what? As Carolinians, we learned about the Lost Colony in the 4th grade. That's when they taught North Carolina history. This state is full of history and lore. I low key love this state. "I'm a Carolina born. I'm a Carolina bred. And when I die, I'm a Carolina dead."
Love your approach to teaching, because that’s what it is. I taught US history for decades with a particular focus on Roanoke, occasioned by my experience in survival training. I found using Maslow’s hierarchy to be an effective lens to view the disintegrating colony. It’s likely that the colony broke into groups and attempted different avenues to find refuge. Basically, South, North, and West. I’ve hiked and paddled much of this terrain and feel it could appear to besieged and starving survivors that they needed to break into factions. I’d suggest that the involvement of Spanish adventurers be included in the overview. The multiple Dare stones, the map with the star fort, European artifacts, and even DNA all suggest dispersion and conflict, basic enemies of survival
Also, they have done DNA on a local tribe discovering English DNA intermingled with Native Americans. Assuming then that at least some of them integrated with local tribes.

Thank you for sharing this video. I have traced one line of my ancestors to Roanoke. Then all of a sudden the next generation was in Virginia. I couldn't figure it out how they got there. You have given me the missing piece to the puzzle. I am very grateful. Thank you again. Stay safe and God bless.
I’m 6 minutes or so in and I’m cracking up over how sweet the natives were to the settlers, granting them permission to move in and supporting them in any way they can! 8 minutes in and now I’m just sad.
They always make it sound like our people(indigenous people), were the ones who who were always ready to attack and giving us the name of “savages”, when in reality it was the Europeans who came and lied, murdered, and stole everything from them. Even as I watch the western movies it’s always portrayed as the indigenous people who were the bad guys. If that were the case, everyone living today would be frightened of us. In those days, they were only trying to protect what their forefathers had taught them, keeping their families protected and protecting their livestock and farming. Anyone who reads this, don’t believe everything you’ve been taught; do your own research and make sure it’s coming from an accurate source.
@debrajones4010 most indigenous people around the world _(who haven't been indoctrinated by European colonialism)_ know all too well the reality of their lies, deceits, manipulation, sadistic-greed and psychopathy. They used the exact same tactics on every continent and against every single group of people they encountered. Even their own European brethren.
There's a difference between biting the hand that feeds you, and being paranoid you're going to be murdered off. did you even try to comprehend what was happening?
It sounds like the colonists were in a very hard spot. The lack of food and supplies combined with the dependence on the natives definitely was good cause for paranoia. This was the olden days after all.
@@lightbringer2588 the colony was basically living off the natives, of course they were gonna get pissy and leave. But to just assume that those natives wanted to leave to come back and "get revenge" even though if they weren't kind in the first place they wouldn't even let the English colony mooch off of them for so long. Things indicated that the natives were just fed up and wanted to leave not that they were somehow angry that the colony won't stop depending on them for free food.
Very cool! I found you awhile ago and never miss an episode. Loved this one. Thanks for being such a natural story teller - An old lady fan in Seattle.
This was one of my favorite mysteries. Years ago I watched an ep. of PBS Secrets of the Dead. The performed DNA tests on known family relations back in Britain with families living in the area with last names that appeared on the manifest. There were matches. Whoever fled from the fort survived
I have always been super intrigued by this story! In fact, I'm writing a novel loosely, (very loosely), based on this story. Actually, the main character is Virginia Dare, the child of Eleanor Dare and the granddaughter of John White, and the first English child born in an English colony. This is the most information I've heard about this so thank you, thank you, thank you!
My daughter was in a play in middle school that I'm sure is not a factual dipiction at all. Admitting I don't know what is fact, apparently nobody does. The play as I recall was settlers engaging in warfare with natives and that was it. No more to the story. Poor women being taken over by savages. Perhaps? My view is defense and mistrust for good reason. I hypotheses is that the some of the women and children were brought in to tribes. Did they suffer abuse? I don't know probably. Absorbed. Men were likely done away with swiftly
The Truth - Oh my God ! I've lost ALL. respect for Queen Elizabeth ! She... was the DEMON who CANCELLED the settlers much needed supplies for survival !!!!!! Oh God I hate Queen Elizabeth !!!!!! Now I understand why Meghan has made the queen's life, a living hell !
So sorry must have misunderstood the last sentence in alma wells statement that makes Meghan over 300 yrs old lol hope everyone is healthy and safe in these trying times. God bless!j
Left with friendly local Natives, eventually blended to become what is known today as Lumbe Indians, residing in Pembroke, NC. This blended Croatan Indian and English tribe retains many last names of the original colonists, such as Oxendine and Lowery. Visit Pembroke and you will meet the Lost Colony descendants.
Someone else knew!!! Awesome. The history of the Lumbe is amazing without the Roanoke connection. Anyone that's interested, and doesn't know the story of Henry Berry Lowry should do some research on him and his group. They were masters of The Great Dismal Swamp, a HUGE and confusing area to navigate because there are very few obvious landmarks.
This is a great account of the “Lost Colony!” I live in south-central Virginia, and I’ve been to the Outer Banks of North Carolina many times. The story of the Lost Colony has also been taught in this area almost since the occurrence. However, you told the story much more interestingly, and in greater detail, than I’ve ever heard it before. That includes everything that was in the historical record before the 2011 discovery, as well as that discovery itself. I appreciate the education!

I like how they gave him a permit to go colonize America as if it was already owned by them...that’s like me giving you permission to go live in my neighbors house
play EUROPA UNIVERSALIS IV and learn a little about history as you go ;) America was 'discovered' trying to find a quicker way to INDIA (hence native tribes being called indians) by sailing West instead of East which is where India is from Europe, the Cape of Good Hope at the Southern tip of the continent of Africa was a dangerous but necessary passage for sailing ships travelling Eastward to the silk and spice trading points. This could only be bypassed many years later after steamships dictated the need to develop THE SUEZ CANAL which took about 1/3rd of the journey away and hence boosted profits from traders bringing things like tea, spices, silks, gems and other exotic goods. The European countries viewed ALL 'undeveloped' places such as the tribal lands of North as well as South America, the Carribean, Canary Islands, Australia, New Zealand and anywhere else for that matter which was not recognised as a sovereignty as possible colonies or waiting to be conquered.... look at the CONQUISTADORES.... wondered why Mexicans and Argentinians speak Spanish? Brazilians speak Portuguese? It is not because they were all once joined together and a few people went for a bit of a stroll before it started raining heavily :/ Anyway, Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Frances Drake were great naval commanders of their time. Apart from being commissioned to set up colonies and appointing chosen people to head expeditions, they would have been issued with privateer commissions too, that would give them the right to raid enemy ships. Its all about the expansionism of the developed countries as Europe was pretty much mapped out and as the Crusades started to fade out and the Catholic countries warring and fighting was frowned upon bringing severe chastisement from the Papacy under rule of the Pope, countries inevitably branched out overseas, those that had the means to. New worlds waiting to be exploited. Disgraceful maybe, but totally acceptable practice at that time. The Americas, not being connected by land to any of the other continents, did well to last almost 1500 years before the shit hit the fan and to be fair, had there been some connection to the far East other than possibly the very Northern extremities that were possibly linked by ice, the native tribes would probably have been incorporated into the Ming Dynasty if not an earlier one and most certainly burnt to a crisp by Ghengis Khan if the Mogolians had access there. Am I the only person who sees similarities in some of the Northern most Inuits and North Western Chinese? Even some parts of Russia people appear that they have maybe crossed paths either direction at some point a few centuries ago :O
I grew up where this story takes place, they've found locations in the sound that they believe could have been the original colony site. But due to damage and being underwater so long, they can't really confirm for sure. But most likely, the harsh winter, lack of supplies, and their constant issues with the native Americans in the area, they very likely tried to move to a better location with more food/supplies resources but perished on the journey. If you're gonna do more on failed or disappearing towns and such, look into Buffalo City NC. It's only about 20 minutes away from Roanoke Island and it has a very interesting/sad story as well. Also it's not Crow-a-tow-an it's Crow-a-tan
Growing up my grandma always told me a story that when her mom was little, there was this family that had gotten sick and sent for the doctor, when the doctor got there, the family was just gone. And said they never found out what happened to them or anything. I dont remember much else besides that. But watching your videos always reminds me of that story
For some odd reason your voice tends to sooth my mind unlike some that make my teeth grind. Since the first day I stumbled upon one of your stories I haven't missed any yet
This story has way more to it than his 15 min video. Sir Walter Raleigh couldn’t get back to the Lost Colony due to the English Queen sending money to fund the war with Spain. The Croatoan were a peaceful tribe. The flat lands were known to flood. The english settlers wouldn’t have known how to navigate survival during the hurricane season. I was in the cast of The Lost Colony for 3 years on Roanoke Island and have lived in NC for 25 years. Tribes down the line had blue eyes and whiter skin. Names like james, White, Bordon and a few other English last names can be found in record in local tribes generations later. Its likely that most settlers died after not being able to survive the tough outerbanks terrain. The Croatoan likely took the survivors with them and fled the area during the wet season. A statue of virginia Dare still stands in the Elizabethan gardens on Roanoke.
That commercial of the 2 brainwashed young women talking about the church of Jesus christ was more annoying than any delay this guy could ever exercise...

There were European artifacts found along side those of local native American tribes in a manner suggesting that after the abandonment of Roanoke, the settlers may have been taken in by a local tribe and lived out their lives as members of that tribe.
Ding, ding, ding 🛎. It was recently uncovered by stories past down by Native Americans that, that was exactly what happened. They knew this back then, but the story of the disappearance of an entire towns population was used by Europeans to create hatred towards Native Americans, it was used as a rallying cry in order to justify the slaughter of NA.
@@lordchaa1598 didn't I read somewhere that after a time had passed since the disappearance, it was reported that in some of the local native american tribes there were seen some people with green eyes, suggesting they had not only taken in but married, or at least procreated with some of the colony.
@@ncfirefighterwife6462 , yeah there are a bunch of books about it. Also, there is a genetics course at UNC that focuses entirely on the integration of the colonists from Roanoke and local Native American tribes.
I’ve been listening to a few You Tubes on this subject. You have packed more information in 25 minutes than documentaries that are 1-2 hours. I’m very glad to have stumbled across this one. Thank you.
Here's some food for thought... MrBallen mentioned that perhaps the patch with the invisible ink was placed there to throw off the Spanish that could have possibly intercepted the map. That to me seems very logical. A simple way to divert a potential capture by the Spanish. To expand upon that, it's quite possible that when the Roanoke colony decided to pick up and move, they also wanted to keep their relocation a secret from the Spanish just in case they came looking for them. It was three whole years by the time John White returned after the war was over. The original colony may have thought that the Spanish won the war since John White did not return with supplies and reinforcements when he said he was going to. That would give the original colony a good reason to write "CRO" on the tree and "CROATOAN" on the fence post in efforts to send the Spanish on a "wild goose chase," so to speak. Lemme know what y'all think.
The settlers had no way of knowing there was a war as far as I know, John White didn't even know till he returned to England. You are definitely on the right track though. My own theory goes like this: The natives left it because "Croatoan" is a different island, they'd grown tired of colonists and wanted to send them away from there completely so they wouldn't land there anymore and to throw them off. The obvious sign that whoever left the message didn't know what they were doing is that no cross was left on the message like it was on the rock in the North. That is the key piece they were specifically told to leave so that searchers would know a message was genuine, and it wasn't there. This means an outsider left that message or a turncoat that had been assimilated. After the last killings and kidnapping of the settlers, the last remaining survivors would be...well...in survival-mode and panic. So they didn't leave their own message and fled North. This explains why the daughter bothered to write a new message with a cross on the stone/rock because they neglected to do so earlier...but what good is a message if searchers won't know where to look to even find it? This means it was a "better late than never" attempt of at least leaving the story behind so that it didn't remain a mystery. I guarantee the remaining survivors didn't even know this Croatoan mislead was even written, otherwise she would have explained that as well.
It is also possible that they didn't went there as planned but due to circumstances. It is possible that as they were trying to go to Croatoan they were brought to the opposite direction by the storm. Another possibility is if they actually have gone to Croatoan, got enough supplies there (perhaps the natives there sympathized with them or clueless as Croatoan was isolated), and then tried to go North as they deemed it necessary, again, as planned or due to the storm, had to land there. For the lack of signs, it may be that they were found out by other natives so they destroyed any signs (by the initially hostile natives or the ones that sympathized with them due to anger or trying not to be associated with them by the hostile ones), the signs were destroyed throughout the years, or never had the time for it.
He’s the Best story teller out there in my opinion! You can tell he takes passion in his work ….he explains the stories from every possible way he can for all of us to have better understanding! Watching or just listening to his stories…definitely helps me get thru the day😊
So, a quick, off the top of my head guess: since the colonists had at one point destroyed the Native American group that had been graciously helping them, they were understandably scared of what lay in store. Plus, no re-supply ship, etc... suppose the colonists had in fact been attacked in small skirmishes, and some had died, so there were fewer than the original 115. They may have decided that yes, they needed to re-locate QUICKLY, but also noted that they could possibly be tracked & killed. So, the CRO and CROATAN could have been a diversion to any possible attackers. It’s reasonable to assume that the Native Americans had learned some English during better times. So, John White could have secretly told them, but didn’t record it, for the colonists to carve CROATON on the tree, therefore sending attackers 50 miles one way, as the settlers who were left escaped 50 miles to the north. John White could have kept this info to himself, even covering it up with a patch, perhaps because he didn’t trust the “Crown”, as it might have been decided, if the Crown knew the true destination, to simply wipe out this small faction of people since the whole thing was a debacle & embarrassment. So, the colonists arrive 50 miles north, not south, perhaps far enough away from the original angry tribe, and found a new tribe who knew nothing of their past. Another puzzle piece-from the biopic “Elizabeth”, it was made clear that she was deeply in love with Sir Walter Raleigh, and tried all sorts of ways to keep him in England, close to her. However, he wasn’t in love with Queen Elizabeth, but was in love with her Lady in Waiting, they had a baby together, and QE saw this as a huge betrayal. So why would she support any further missions by Raleigh? Thoughts?
Well to start, having certainly not established schools to teach the natives to read English, that part fails. What's nuts to me is how these "settlers" were so woefully unprepared to be self-reliant in a verdant land that would have been quite easy to survive in without their English supplies and, ultimately, pillaging the native people creating enemies they certainly didn't need. What's up with that vaunted English "self reliance" anyway? SMH The story here sounds likely to be the most plausible answer to the puzzle. Being stuck out on an island is a drag but even then they should have been able to survive without pillaging the natives. Maybe the "supplies" were weapons primarily to ensure they could not just "defend" themselves but continue pillaging the natives.
I bet you good Queen Besss breath would make Sir Walters penis grown inward. Also people were far worse weasels than now. If someone held a sign saying Catholic Lives Matter.................their intestines would be pawned off as hummus.

They are speculating that it could be the original site of the colony and that they were moving north when they etched the letters on the tree.
What a fascinating update! I live in Roanoke, Virginia, and have been interested in the Lost Colony of Roanoke since learning of it in grade school, because it bore the same name as my hometown. Plus I love mysteries! Thank you for sharing this.
Eleanor Dare's carved stone tells exactly what happened to them. All but seven were killed by natives, and those seven (including Eleanor) were taken captive and forced to pound copper out of rocks in the area. I have lived in the Outer Banks for 20 years. This location makes a LOT of tourism money off this 'mystery'. It is not in their best interest for it to be solved, but the solution is out there, written in one of the survivor's own hand!
I don't mind a good mystery. But when you find out what happened, say that instead of keeping up the charade. All of them are probably rollin in their graves, pissed, listening to people mystify this story over and over instead of doing them justice by telling what really happened.

I'm from Eastern NC and have ancestry in the region which goes back many generations. My European ancestry in Virginia goes back to around 1630. I also have a very small percentage of Lumbee, and a small percentage of Tuscarora. Supposedly, Croatoan(Hatteras Island) was inhabited in early colonial times by a Native American people whom had interesting features, such as blonde hair, grey or blue eyes, and whom spoke English quite well. From one of the first visits by English to the Outer Banks, two natives named Manteo and Wanchese, spoke English and were taken back to England. Anyway, there are some Lumbee and Tuscarora surnames that go very far back, which seem to be very English. Some of those surnames are Hunt, Locklear, Lowry, and Oxendine. Flowers is another Lumbee surname but is a bit rare. It's also my surname. Many people speculate that some of the English colonists were rescued from Roanoke Island, taken to Cape Hatteras, then taken inland and possibly far enough inland to be in the territories of the Lumbee and Tuscarora. A lot of the NC band of the Tuscarora were killed in 1713 during the Tuscarora War, most at Fort Nooherooka. Most of the Lumbee hid in swamps along the Lumber River, which is named for the Lumbee, which mean "People of the Dark Water." One theory is that these English surnames are now Native surnames because some survivors of the Lost Colony interbred/intermarried with the Lumbee. There's also a theory that Croatians had a Colony, or had at least landed on the Outer Banks, causing Hatteras Island to be known as Croatoan/Croatan for many years. A lot of the Lumbee people have pretty light skin and/or appear to be Caucasian. There have also been a lot of colonial-age English artifacts found near Cape Hatteras in the last few years. I personally believe that some of the English from the Lost Colony made their way to Lumbee/Tuscarora territory and thrived. I'm also a veteran of the Marine Corps and the Army. I love what you do Mr. Ballen!! Semper Fidelis!!

I was born and raised on Roanoke Island (now called Manteo). Lived right down the street from Andy Griffith actually (he had a big compound there). Isolated (can only be accessed by plane or ferry) and stuck in the past in many respects. My family still has a home there and I go every summer. It has a creepy vibe, the whole island. I heard so many versions of this story and I could honestly say you have given 100% more details than any I have ever heard. Thank you for the info.
I noticed this too. I hadn't heard of the previous scouting expeditions and thought the whole thing just started as a colony with families ready to settle.
But I'm still fascinated by the mystery.
No, they killed those Indians out of fear
I've heard the same.
Yes I don't see why the natives wouldn't intermarry with them they did so with the runaway slaves

Been following this story since grammar school. This is the best explanation. Whatever happened wasn't pleasant. Was not a good idea to kill the native people that helped them.
Aye your people were very well known for that and they were proud of that too it’s why they taught us that in school. Lmaoo
@@purobrim36XX lmaoo 😐

I believe this makes the most sense, except for the ones who may have been killed in a conflict.
Probably assimilated with the kidnapped victims after killing most of the colony. That tribe probably left out those details when retelling the story.

This theory is the most likely. Good work! 👍🏻

Wow, very interesting! Thanks for sharing 😊

@MrBallen i hope will see your comment and look into that and put an update up
I had a suspicion that the settlers (or at least some of them) would have joined the natives eventually, I mean it makes sense from a survival point of view especially.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that
It would make sense to me if they just drew a cross instead of writing "cross"
What about this: I’m Croat. From Croatia, Europe. What if some Croats took them somewhere?! 🤣
No. By cross he means the literal shape. Not the word.

True, that's why most of us locals still die to this day.
@Kevin McCarthy, no one knows more about our NC history than we do. One fellow North Carolinian to another. Hail the Old North State !!
Ocracoke Island is the summer home of the super rich. It's a 3 hour ferry ride from the mainland of Hyde County. The homes are $1 million plus. Very restrictive place
Well, it's more exclusive than it's restrictive

America was 'discovered' trying to find a quicker way to INDIA (hence native tribes being called indians) by sailing West instead of East which is where India is from Europe, the Cape of Good Hope at the Southern tip of the continent of Africa was a dangerous but necessary passage for sailing ships travelling Eastward to the silk and spice trading points.
It is not because they were all once joined together and a few people went for a bit of a stroll before it started raining heavily :/
Anyway, Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Frances Drake were great naval commanders of their time.

I know what u mean I think that’s a undertone towards how invested in his story telling we get, that n he is very humble. Shame he’s not English

There were European artifacts found along side those of local native American tribes in a manner suggesting that after the abandonment of Roanoke, the settlers may have been taken in by a local tribe and lived out their lives as members of that tribe.
Yep, somewhere along the Chowan River I believe.

I was thinking similar
The thing is, the settlers had no idea there was a war between England and Spain. John white himself didn't know until he arrived at England
Sounds believable
Thoughts?
Pretty sure the natives couldn't read English
Alicia Hinesley It wasn’t Raleigh who Elizabeth wanted it was the Earl of Essex!
SMH
The story here sounds likely to be the most plausible answer to the puzzle. Being stuck out on an island is a drag but even then they should have been able to survive without pillaging the natives. Maybe the "supplies" were weapons primarily to ensure they could not just "defend" themselves but continue pillaging the natives.
Maybe the natives that attacked them were native to Crotoan... You know like saying they did this
I bet you good Queen Besss breath would make Sir Walters penis grown inward. Also people were far worse weasels than now. If someone held a sign saying Catholic Lives Matter.................their intestines would be pawned off as hummus.
