I'm currently in London, and wanted to visit this restaurant ever since seeing this video years ago. I met Joe today and he came over and talked with me for about 45 minutes, amazing guy, and the food was fantastic!

Due to delays and what not I was only in London for a day, but it also happened to be their day off, so I did not get to visit. I visited a similar establishment and had pie and mash, and also jellied eels. I would like to and plan to visit England again soon, and this time actually visit this establishment. I am also glad to hear that he is still in business. I think it is important that businesses like this as well as the history, and culture they represent survives generations. It is for those reasons, that I would enjoy to be there, and partake in the food.

As an East Londoner, I can confirm this shop and this man are the real deal. There's only a few decent Pie & Mash shops left around (This one. Manze's, Eel & Pie House, and a few scattered in east), But its good to see business is still going. Never liked Jellied Eels but pie and mash was a favourite of mine growing up. The two old dears are proper cockneys
My grandad was from the east end of London he was born in 1925 & sadly is no longer around, he was also called Joe. Just watching this video reminds me of him he loved jellied eels, just the mannerisms and the way the people talk, it was so familiar. I haven't heard my gramps voice in years & it was like having him back for a bit 😊 I really miss him
It just occured to me. Joe's speech about basic good tasting food is the exact same ball park as Marco pierre white and his attitude towards perfection. Lots of little things done right is perfection.

I've been there with a mate 3 years ago. We're both from Paris but we had to go to London for a friend's birthday, so we made sure to arrive in town early enough to try this gem. Joe was the nicest guy and took 5 minutes to sit with us as we were eating, and tell us how much he loves is job and food in general. He even told us that every once in a while he and his wife would take Eurostar to Paris, eat in a proper parisian restaurant, and go back to London by the evening hahaha ! Freaking legend this man I tell you

R.I.P. Peggy. They closed the shop when she died. To memorialize her death and in honor of her going their since it opened, she was a fine woman and great friends with the family owners of the shop. (Edit, The shop only closed for A day after she died. And I believe the Original shop closed down cause of Covid related stuff. But they do have two or one other shop open around London.)
I mean... I know it's these people's tradition and all that... But it just looks awful. And it's so sad that the old lady seems to enjoy it so much. She has spent her all her life thinking THIS is good food.
The shop's been in his family for generations, bet they own the building, are well established, out about to go out of business, he's got a steady dependable job, appreciative customers, a sense of craft, and since he's in Britain, the NHS. In the US you could win the lottery and not end up doing nearly as well.

It's great that canteens still exist, somewhere in the world. Here in Finland they are just memories. It's good to eat warm, tasty food in the mornings, this is how you get through the day's. Big thumbs up. The program reminds me of my childhood and shared moments with my father. Eel was one of my favorites at the time. It still is. Father used to take me to the market in Helsinki in the summertimes. He bought us smoked eel. In those early mornings we would sit side by side on the stone pier and enjoy salty fatty eel with bread. Can life get any better? Thanks for the great documentary, it brought back memories for an old man.

Just went today. Pie was amazing. Proper full of flavour. It was immediately noticeable and I’m not even the type to notice stuff about food. Although I had to pay cash so bare in mind people. But you could see based on the customers, people had travelled to experience it. He’s a great guy too. Only £4.40 for a small pie and mash with parsley sauce (liquor). Lovely food.

Known Joe for years, since I was a kid in the early 60’s when he worked in his parents pie shop in Broadway Market. We had the chippy opposite and I’d be a regular over the road most Saturday mornings for my pie & mash fix

Since I watched this video several years ago, I was dying to visit F. Cooke ! This August I managed to make it all the way from Greece alongside my girlfriend, we ate at this historic establishment and met Mr Joe who I found very pleasant and educated ! I hope they carry on in the years to come !
Exactly. I'd rather eat from some humble old lady that makes simple yet great food. I haven't tried too many fancy dishes with exotic ingredients, but so far I haven't been blown away, though I do hope I can find one amazing fancy dish someday.

I saw this a couple of years ago and I eventually had lunch there on my last day in London in September 2019. I didn't eat the eels but the pie and liquor was delicious. Simple food but tasty. I would go back!

Went into F. Cooke last time I was in London and Joe was in there having a cup of tea and reading the paper. He's very friendly and chats with everyone. Food was great, too. 10/10 would pie again.

It's great that canteens still exist, somewhere in the world. Here in Finland they are just memories. It's good to eat warm, tasty food in the mornings, this is how you get through the day's. Big thumbs up.
The program reminds me of my childhood and shared moments with my father. Eel was one of my favorites at the time. It still is. Father used to take me to the market in Helsinki in the summertimes. He bought us smoked eel. In those early mornings we would sit side by side on the stone pier and enjoy salty fatty eel with bread.
Can life get any better? Thanks for the great documentary, it brought back memories for an old man.

Just went today. Pie was amazing. Proper full of flavour. It was immediately noticeable and I’m not even the type to notice stuff about food. Although I had to pay cash so bare in mind people. But you could see based on the customers, people had travelled to experience it. He’s a great guy too. Only £4.40 for a small pie and mash with parsley sauce (liquor). Lovely food.

Known Joe for years, since I was a kid in the early 60’s when he worked in his parents pie shop in Broadway Market. We had the chippy opposite and I’d be a regular over the road most Saturday mornings for my pie & mash fix
Sadly the fish and chips shop owner got changed and now it's not the best but broadway market and Hoxton St pie and mash are still going strong
will Panda We sold the chippy in 2002 just as the area was becoming gentrified. Been back a few times to have a look around. Cookes is my favourite pie & mash.

Since I watched this video several years ago, I was dying to visit F. Cooke ! This August I managed to make it all the way from Greece alongside my girlfriend, we ate at this historic establishment and met Mr Joe who I found very pleasant and educated ! I hope they carry on in the years to come !

As a chef i can confirm. Quality products, cooked simply and well will always sell and in my opinion always beats complicated food.
Exactly. I'd rather eat from some humble old lady that makes simple yet great food. I haven't tried too many fancy dishes with exotic ingredients, but so far I haven't been blown away, though I do hope I can find one amazing fancy dish someday.

I saw this a couple of years ago and I eventually had lunch there on my last day in London in September 2019. I didn't eat the eels but the pie and liquor was delicious. Simple food but tasty. I would go back!
