    The sacrificial anode will not protect the rest of the metal in the shaft and all other connected pieces from corrosion if it is isolated by a coating. Anything that adds electrical resistance to the joint between the anode and the prop shaft would be less than optimal. Of course you know this. Best practice is clean metal on clean metal. It is technically an electrical connection.

    I take it the anodes all got installed and tightened up?

  • @Randommusingsvideos
    @Randommusingsvideos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the location where the anode is to be fitted should be sanded to ensure that the anode has full contact with the shaft in order to maximise electrical conductivity and minimise the risk of galvanic corrosion.

  • @kevinkelley5768
    @kevinkelley5768 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tristan, that is a Propspeed rookie mistake! It MUST be removed under the anodes or they will be inactive.
    The anodes should have been installed and taped off before the Propspeed was painted on.
    BIG PROBLEM #2
    Now that you have both props, shafts, and rudders coated with Propspeed, you need to have your electrician check your hull potential. There is a very good chance that you are now over protecting the vessel with so much anode mass installed. If that is the case, you will very quickly ruin that beautiful bottom paint job by blowing the paint off of your struts, intake screens, through hulls, transom, etc.

    Couple of questions for you Capt.
    The 1st how much does AWOL weigh in at, for her length i would think around 400 tons.
    The next for the fuel supply you take on what kind of range do you get
    I have been thinking about getting another vessel and so it would be nice to know.

  • @buoyohbuoy790

    Anti foul paint, or even a primer, doesn’t serve its purpose under an anode anyway. So why take any risk, even if the specs state that you can do it? I would strip that paint before fixing the anode in place.

    Good to see you back on Tristan. Instead of using wooden blocks for balancing the yacht on the trolleys, why dont they use the heavy duty air bags to spread the weight evenly, also not causing damage that is likely from wooden blocks. I am referring to the huge airbags that are used for road recovery of heavy haulers etc.

  • @OpticalMan

    Why would you want a layer of Propspeed between the sacrificial anode and the prop shaft? It wouldn't be doing the job it is designed to do and it can only hinder the electrical connection that is needed between the two. You want the best electrical connection you can get for the zinc anode so remove the Propspeed but only in the area that the two are in contact with each other.

    • @michaelsommers2356

    You asked where the ring should be placed.
    Answer always is where the experts in the ship yard place it. The last thing a captain or owner should do is play engineer. If it's done wrong or there a mishap. They would say, hey the captain told us to do it that way. Point what ever u want out. But till they give you the keys. There in charge. Liability cap, 💸💸👨‍💻👨‍🏫👨‍⚖

    Definitely remove the Propspeed first for good metal-to-metal contact. Reapply Propspeed right up to the edge of the secured anode. Sanding though is pretty rough on the metal so use something less abrasive like a simple solvent recommended by Propspeed.

    Always happy to see a vlog from Super Yacht Captain. A thought came to me when you were overlooking the hull. What would happen if the yacht had been in an accident, and had a 6 foot hole in the hull? Can they repair somethings like that, and at what point is the yacht considered a loss? 👍✌
    P.S. Not to many, if any, vlogs on the process to repair yachts when they have severe damage. With all the boats out there, I bet there are a lot of accidents whether it be a 30 footer, or a 300 footer. It would be interesting, to me anyway, to document the various repairs.
