  • Comedian George Carlin takes on the hypocrisy of politicians and religious leaders and their promises to the American public.
George Carlin’s sixth HBO stand-up concert special, "What Am I Doing In New Jersey," aired as a live broadcast from the Park Theater in Union City, New Jersey. The live performance includes classic routines, "More Stuff on Cars and Driving," "Reagan‘s Gang, Church People, and American Values," "People I Can Do Without," and "Keeping People Alert."
Stream the full special here: tubitv.com/mov...
George Carlin described his comedy as focusing on 3 things: love of language and how we use it; the small things, moments we all share as humans; and the big topics of our culture-war, death, children, religion, etc. A social commentator, he challenged conventional wisdom and brought us face-to-face with our ingrained hypocrisies. There was no topic off limits to his keen observation, wordplay, goofy jabs and rants, whether it was drugs, war, politics, the accumulation of stuff or the way in which we use words.

It's a cronyist scam almost as old as time. What is a king, really, if not a violent criminal, leading a gang into a land that was not his, and saying that it is now his, and anyone who argues will be killed? And what makes him a king instead of a dictator? Why, god does. The church. A bishop or pope who says "Ah, yes, you are indeed the rightful ruler of this land, which is conquered _most_ justly. So long as you help spread our faith, god's got your back, fam!" And thereafter, it's just "Well, my daddy was king, so I'm king."

If they like the law, it is The Law. If you break The Law you deserve jail for life in most situations, if not a summary ex*cution.
If they don't like the law, then it is the government overextending their power and it is your moral duty as a citizen to break the law. Nobody can tell me what to do, that is why I have the yellow snake flag on my pickup truck!
This of course only apply to the correct people.
A guy is driving with 0.8 BAC? Put him in jail for life.
A police chief is driving with 2.4 BAC? You have to understand that the life of the police officers is very stressful, we all make mistakes, he is a good man who did something stupid.
A black man is selling weed? Put that hardened criminal in jail for life.

George is saying that if something on the radio or television offends you, you can always turn it off or change the channel. So what should be allowed? Everything? Where do you draw the line? Do you believe there should be standards? Television shows are produced as entertainment, true, but if they aren't making money they're cancelled.

Maybe all the channels should be porn channels. Freedom. Freedom to provide entertainment. Freedom to consume entertainment. In your scenario the people would have voted for all porn all the time. That's democratic. I'm sure that many Americans would make sure that their children were unable to see television because of this. Perhaps the scenario would work out better than what we have now. Did Trump break the record on criminals in his administration? Because that is one campaign promise he actually kept: he drained the swamp by getting his own doctors and lawyers to be disbarred and his loyalists to be arrested or voted out for corruption.

I had teachers back in the 70's and early 80's who basically taught what George was simply pointing out in his comedy routines. Paying attention to history and calling out political b.s. It's called "critical thinking." Most Americans, despite what the so-called news will tell you, are poorly educated and many today can't even answer the simplest of questions posed to them. They have been brainwashed by 40 years of right-wing disinformation with no one (the democratic party) calling out the fear mongering and the republicans immoral and unethical behavior. Money is now speech, and corporations are people. Everything is "breaking" news and full of speculation and sensationalism, but no evidence, no facts. Oh, and by the way the facts don't seem to matter on one side of the political aisle. I'll let you figure out for yourself which aisle that is. Reagan was the beginning of the end of this great experiment we call our democratic republic and laid the groundwork from which the uber wealthy and powerful in this country have built what we now see today-an oligarchy.

It’s always the 1% using Christian fanaticism to suppress everyday Americans. You got to ask how many times people are going to keep shooting themselves in the foot? Sadly, the political establishment is so deeply entrenched that it’s hard to vote for real change, and this next presidency will only rob people of more of their voice, to fund the coming oligarch / billionaire government.

When you have no common sense and know nothing about your historical roots, then you set yourself up to be manipulated and lied to by those who would not act on your behalf. People in this country are still too willing to accept the word on a con man, believe his concocted brew of spew because it plays to their fears and lack of information and then join his cultish, fervent band of followers. I don't think in general that people worldwide will ever learn. It's not just a problem with Americans, it's everywhere and gaining popularity because it's easier to abdicate your responsibility to others and then sit back and wonder why it doesn't work for you, rather than jumping into the fray and trying to make a difference.
