For younger people who didn't live through seeing this when it aired, this was right smack in the middle of the religious right's grip on America and Troops being praised for their service in the Iraq war. It was legit shocking to hear someone talk about these issues like this at the time, which is exactly why Carlin was so valuable and ahead of the game. Nobody else was talking like this about social issues.

It wasn't the Iraq war. It was Desert Storm, which ended in 1991. Only conservatives were sucking the boot, as usual, and carlin wasn't the only voice.

@@h.a.9880 this is kind of how humans have been for the last however many thousand years we’ve been alive. While our heightened intelligence compared to other species allows us to transcend the survival mindset that most creatures have and allow us to have complex and nuanced thoughts, this also allows for bad actors to take advantage of that and use it to control or harm others. Our social nature also leads us to highly value personal relationships which means that a lot of people will go along with bad things just to stay a part of what they consider the in-group and to avoid being viewed as an outsider or “other”.

Carlin isn’t some moral philosopher. The man is just a reflection of the same misplaced broken down reasoning that not only obscures the issue with abortion, but also countless other moral issues. If you are seeing him as some bastion of wisdom, then it should be said that you are the one that has lost the plot.

I grew up with George as my favorite comic. As I get older I realize how overrated he is. Norm MacDonald, the actual GOAT, was dead right: Carlin didn't really make people smile. He has little replay value. His appeal is to really young people because young people are idealistic. Same with Hicks and Lenny. They took a lot of easy pot shots and didn't even land them all. I got his early albums early on. My rantacomment. " Hard to imagine better, from the first centered sentences. I had his first half dozen albums, at least. Saw first SNL with delight. Thank you who remain. My mother said start funny, then get serious, but as prof of biochem, who taught history of women in science in a grad seminar at Princeton, and much more...she had to get serious quick. Seriously, serious fun AND truth as needed, here. "
