  • Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in May of 2018. The Sith Council rewatched it and gave it a shot to see how it fairs with a rewatch. Should it have been made, should there be a sequwl and how does it tie into TV shows or movies in the future?

I disagree with the panel about Han always being cocky. He’s cocky in the Original Trilogy cause he’s a jaded man at that point and that is his defense mechanism. By the time of Episode 4, he doesn’t trust anyone but Chewy and that’s why his character is who he is. In the movie Solo, he’s still thinking big, he still trusts people. After the movie, Kira turns on, Beckett turns on him, so he’s lost the trust of people like that. That’s why he’s not as arrogant in ROTJ because he starts to trust and love again (Luke and Leia) and is finally all-in with the Rebellion. It’s all character development.

I agree. The name scene is really the only scene in the film that I don’t necessarily care for, although I get that the Kasdans were going for an homage to The Godfather. There’s actually a lot of homages to classic films in Solo. It’s pretty fun to go through and pick them out.

Here is a fun fact about how Han got his last name. It’s a reference to The Godfather Part 2 when Vito Corleone got his name at Ellis Island; is identical to how Solo got his. I always though it was an overlooked detail

  • @ShawHortonMusic

I like Solo a lot, it’s even in my top five SW ranking. I thought Alden was a great young Han. I liked that he made it his own interpretation of the character, rather than just doing an imitation of Ford. He may not look exactly like Harrison Ford, but he really captured the spirit of Han, creating this version who is younger and looking to prove himself. I’d love to see a sequel with him and Chewie doing other jobs around the galaxy. Could be fun to see his initial operations with Jabba. One thing I like is that this wasn’t a typical Star Wars film. It felt more like a space western about a young gunslinger trying to make a name for himself. For example, the third act isn’t a big epic space battle, but mainly a few people fighting it out in a room, followed by a one-on-one gun duel. In a way, this is Han Solo’s version of Casino Royale; an origin story that ends with him being betrayed by the woman he loves, which begins his turn into the traditional version of the character.

This movie has aged well, however the imperial officer giving him his name is unforgivable. Kira really fascinates me. I think the word is “unnecessary” for me, but as years pass I like this more and more

  • @spaulagain

I think this movie totally lines up with the development of his character. The differences between a 20 year old and 30 year old is very significant. Especially in environment as challenging as Star Wars. Just look at Luke's character change over far fewer years in the OT.
Him helping the Rebels is his natural tendency. he BECAME jaded after he was betrayed multiple times. That's what turned him into the selfish guy we saw in episode 4. Which is why by ESB and ROTJ he opens his heart back up.

I'm also one of the ones that really enjoyed Solo and, unlike Kalinowski, I think my enjoyment/appreciation has grown a little bit each time I watch it. The worst part of the movie, for me, was how much of his backstory they tried to cram into this single movie. His meeting with Chewie, his name, his blaster, the Kessel Run, his sense of cynicism, all of that didn't have to be wrapped up in this single film. I get that they weren't sure how many shots they would get to fill those blanks in, but it was just too much and they could have kept some of them a mystery or something to be explored later. The ending of Solo might be one of my favorite SW endings with just how many turns there were and Maul's reveal, having watched The Clone Wars series, was a really welcome twist with the really tantalizing possibility of a Q'ira/Maul/Crimson Dawn series.
Donald Glover was fabulous, I even enjoyed Alden Ehrenreich's performance. I could see glimpses of Ford's solo in his performance. There's this one scene where he gives this uncomfortable smile (while talking to Q'ira, I think) that totally reminded me of an uncomfortable version of Ford's Solo smile.
When it comes to some of the less popular SW movies, The Last Jedi is absolutely bottom of the barrel for me by galaxies. The way it threw out so much of what was sent up in the first movie (and there's criticisms to be had with the first about just how much of a retread it was of ANH, but it could have been the introductory movie with which they could carve their own path), how a great character like Rey just turns goo-goo eyed for a mass murderer who tried to mind screw her, killed Han, etc, how they absolutely shit on Luke and what could have been (and while I enjoy Luke, he's not at the top of my favorite SW characters), Canto Bight, how the Jedi's legacy is a failure... even though the Galactic Republic existed for thousands of years, all through which the Jedi protected it and only succumbed at a time where their powers were at a nadir against maybe the greatest Sith to have been. But, yeah, let's go with the narrative that the Jedi were failures. They only batted like .995, but ok.
As for AoTC, remove the gawd awful dialogue between Anakin and Padme, the gumshoe Kenobi part of the story, Kenobi/Anakin vs Dooku, Yoda vs Dooku were all highlights for me and make for a fun viewing and I'm not really a fan of the prequels at all.

Rewatched Solo last night for the 3rd (maybe 4th time?) and I've grown to like it more each time. I really think the fallout from TLJ is what caused this film to tank, not Star Wars fatigue. The action, characters and story aren't too bad and the cinematography is probably the best compared to the other 10 SW films. My only gripe is Han seems a little too chipper. I'm fine watching him fumble his way through the missions, but his 'positivity' was a little too much. Maybe Lucasfilm was planning something tragic to happen between Kira and Solo which pushes him to his Episode IV attitude? Who knows? I wouldn't mind seeing what happens next, but I'm not sure if that's gonna happen.

i was liking the movie for a while, but by the end of the movie i just didn't buy Han or Lando as the characters they were supposed to be. I think it's dangerous trying to go back and give backstory to Star Wars characters. Lando being in a relationship or something with a droid, Han making him look like a fool in my opinion. He wrecks his ship and then swindles him out of it. Then Maul shows up. you have to remember most people that see the movies, don't watch the cartoons. He's a dead character to them.

My biggest issue was that I really enjoyed the A.C. Crispin trilogy. I never read the Brian Daley novels, but I read the Lando trilogy. So, I was a bit disappointed that they didn't take more from those stories. However, I came out of the theater happy with the movie and the potential of more stories and connections to other shows/movies. When the movie didn't do as well, and it seemed like any follow up was not coming anytime soon, it kinda took the movie down a notch for me.

@@TheKristianHarloff They took some basic ideas, like Han being raised in a criminal gang, and his Kessel run record being the result of taking the shorter route closer to the Maw. It just has one too many extremely dumb things (how solo got his name) that bring the movie down unfortunately. I also think people are too fixated on the behind the scenes of the film and it sours their opinion of it when they need to just take the finished film as is.

With that being said, I thought SOLO was a fun movie. I rank it above The Last Jedi and Attack of the Clones. I saw flashes of the Han Solo I know and love in Aldan's performance. Donald Glover was flawless as Lando. I would love to see a Crimson Dawn series with Kira. I thought she was an interesting character. To me he's not really the Solo we know BECAUSE it's a movie that tells the story of how he became the Solo we know. Han is way less cynical here because he is still a young man full of hope, he's in love, etc. But after the way this movie end you understand why Han acts like he does by the time of Episode 4. He does not trust anyone because of what happened in this movie. That said, I totaly understand the frustration of not having THE exact same character that we love. This is not a "Han Solo's Adventure", this is a Han Solo "prequel".

@@TheKristianHarloff Yeah I do agree, but it's tricky because do the swagger and the essence you talk about belong to Han Solo, or do they belong to Harrison Ford...? I mean Ford always have a coolness in his gesture no matter the movie he's in. It's very much himself. I think Alden Ehrenreich was afraid to mimic that because a lot of people would have said he was a parody of Ford. I liked Anthony Ingruber a lot in The Age of Adaline for what he had to do but I think Lucasfilm were also afraid to get someone mimicking Ford too much. I was one of those fans when the trailers came out as I was skeptical of this movie. I finally saw it and enjoyed the hell out of it as it’s the first Star Wars movie since the Original Trilogy that didn’t take itself too seriously. I really enjoyed Solo. I knew that it would be bogged down with trying to cram tons of backstory and nostalgia references so I tried to not let that bother me. In doing so, I went for the ride of a fun heist movie and got some great stuff out of it. That Imperial battlefield scene was incredible, I just wish that there was more of it. Donald Glover is the heir apparent to play Lando and I'm truly surprised that a Lando movie or TV show hasn't been announced. Qi'ra is also really cool, and one of the most fleshed out characters in recent SW history. Obviously anything Maul related is going to go over really well with fans. If Crimson Dawn was announced tomorrow, it's entirely possible that the fandom would treat live action Maul's return the same way the fans treated CM Punk's return. Personally, I'd love to see a TV show with Robert Rodriguez as the showrunner. He has experience in that after From Dusk til Dawn (and by extension, the El Rey Network), his filmography is littered with multi racial crime stories that mix influences like a bartender mixes a good drink, and if it was successful, perhaps he could get Battle Angel Alita 2 back on track.

I liked the character of Beckett and the whole Crimson Dawn storyline and inclusion of Maul. Agree that it would make an interesting TV show rather than another movie.
Personally, I don't think it comes close to any of the Prequels (apart from obvious dialogue flaws in those movies) but I'd gladly watch this over the Sequels any day of the week.

The craziest thing about Lady Proxima, who is probably the worst part of the movie, is that she is played by Linda Hunt.. who is a *veteran* actor who has a bunch of excellent roles, most notably Henrietta Lange in NCIS: Los Angeles. I think there is a big difference between Han choosing to go out of his way to help the Rebels (for no reward) in ANH and trying to find a way to not help Crimson Dawn to screw over the Rebels in "Solo."
Especially, because Han thought he was going to get what he wanted in "Solo." He was going to get money, freedom, and the love of his life while not screwing over the rebels.
Then Beckett screwed him and the love of his life chose money and power over being with him. I think this shows exactly why he doesn't go out of his way to help people (without reward) in ANH. But, I think it's great that they established he is the good guy. He is just afraid to choose to be the good buy, b/c it makes him vulnerable to be screwed over.

This movie just felt terribly misguided from the start. This seems like the type of film where you need to have the perfect actor in mind and then go from there. Instead they had a half baked idea about a "young Han Solo" movie and then auditioned thousands of people and clearly never found the right one. Overall this movie feels pretty generic and bland. I don't hate it like I do Last Jedi or Rise of Skywalker (or the prequels) but it just feels pointless. There seems like a million others movie ideas that money could have been spent on.
Also, when they said "we will learn how Solo got his name" I was certain they meant that figuratively. But we literally see a random Imperial officer give him the name in the dumbest scene in Star Wars history. There is nothing dumber than that. Whoever approved that should be fired.

I think because i had zero expectations and was determined to dislike it, that i ended up being pleasantly surprised. However, does this movie have any reason at all for existing? Absolutely not. I will say though that the robot uprising scene is easily the most laugh out loud moment in all of Star Wars. Alden is a really good actor and i feel like the directors just did him and the character a disservice by not picking a single personality to stick with or grow into. It is a dang fun film though and i could watch this 100 times before i would ever watch TRoS again.

I will always be mad at Disney for making LucasFilm release this in May 2018 instead of when LucasFilm wanted to release it in December 2018. I'm glad Bob Iger admits that it was a mistake, but it should have never have happened. I enjoyed this movie in general.
I am still behind on reading the new canon books, which include the prequel novel to this movie and the novelization to this movie. I know they will enhance my enjoyment of the movie, in general. Solo should have just been his last name already.
To be honest, anyone who was portraying Han and/or Lando in this movie would have faced criticism from any direction from anyone who wanted to find fault; another actor who would have had the swagger y'all wanted to see would have done something else someone else wouldn't have liked. It was an uphill battle no matter what. So the fact that his performance wasn't terrible, I found it to be acceptable. It was too hard of a position for them to put any actor in, in my opinion.

I didn't think I wanted to see this ep at all because I disliked Solo so much. But it was cool to see others have many of the same issues I had with the movie.
Ever since seeing Ingruber as Han no one else comes close to deserving that role. And it wasn't just that he looked so much like Ford that he looked like a de-aged CG or deepfake of him. But he actually had his voice, his mannerisms, and even the aura of Solo.
He was a young Solo personified. And Alden just didn't approach the same level of any of those things on anywhere near the level that Ingruber did.
Also, many of the fabled events of Solo's life were huge letdowns in their actualization. From how he met Chewy. To the Kessel Run. To how Solo got his name. To how the Falcon got his iconic shape. None of them were satisfying in any way.
I could've written all of them to be much more gratifying than what we got because I would've taken the time to think all of them out until we got it right. And unlike what we saw, the events would actually match the level of fable each has become in the story of Solo.
And the story of the movie itself was just not film-worthy. It felt more like a tv episode or an issue of a comic book. The whole plot was just some errand run to go get a thing for some uninteresting villain.
The entire endeavor was just subpar and completely forgettable. No wonder it was the first box office loser of SW. It deserved nothing less. Great job Kasdans and Kathleen.
Still looking forward to the Lando series if it ever happens though. That they never revealed that Glover was signed upon the series announcement is hugely concerning.
How sick would it be if Ingruber showed up in it as young Solo and they did team-up episodes?

    • @TheKristianHarloff

After this movie, and I thought Disney and Lucasfilm set it up perfectly, I thought Qu'ra was going to be Rey's Mom by Han Solo. My theory was that after Han walked away from Leia when Kylo destroyed everything, he picked his love back up with Qu'ra and had a love child. That's why it seemed in Force Awakens that Kylo asked "What girl?" On Jaku which I saw as he knew of her and that would be the half sister he would HATE because his father left his mother and why he would dislike his father more.
But the main thing was Force Awakens she was looking for family and it would just have a much better emotional impact that Han was her father the whole time. Explains how she knew how to fly the Falcon.

That wouldn't help outrun Star Destroyers and the coaxium boost was a one time thing. And if this wasn't a race how exactly did word spread so far across the galaxy that someone isolated like Rey knows about it? Was there a Kessel run registry social media group that has millions of followers? Did Han submit the ship's data to a committee for verification and risk being targeted by the Empire? Enjoyed the film enough overall but Han running into Qi'ra on the yacht was a pretty ridiculous coincidence...

I saw it in the theater once and re-watched it for this episode. I didn't think I would be able to sit through the whole thing again without fast forwarding through most of it. But i amde it through.
I still feel the same about the film as I did when I saw it in theaters.
It felt to me like they took scenes from Return of the Jedi, Empire, Raiders of the lost Arc and The last crusade and then slapped them together.
I like the reveal of Maul at the end but I don't like the scene at all. If that makes any sense.
Him igniting his lightsaber had me rolling my eyes during both viewings.
The entire beginning seems like a complete waste of time. He is doing all of this stuff so he could get back to Qi'ra. Then all of a sudden, there she is. It felt like it completely sucked the emotional drive out of the entire movie when that happened and everything that Han went through before that scene was pointless.
The Kessel run seemed really really dumb and him getting his last name is at least in my top 5 list of dumbest scenes of the entire franchise. I really hope they don't try to fix that by later on revealing that his last name was Tarkin or something along those lines lol. I have a feeling that they were planning on revealing something lame like that in part 2 because they in no way expected this movie to flop.
As much as I wanted to give him a chance I was just not convinced that he was Han Solo at any point in the movie. After seeing the SOLO deep fake stuff from the guy Lucasfilm just hired...MAN, I wish they would have waited. The possibilities are endless now.

Shame River Phoenix couldn't do this part:)In his last Dark Blood(when he wears hat)he totally looks like young Indy.Harrison Ford always thought that too:)

He would have been great again but I think with deepfake, they might have him come back in one of the series, Solo that is.

If only this Han had some of the edge that Diego Luna brought to Cassian Andor in Rogue One. Now there was a character who actually felt more like Han Solo.

I know this movie has a small following and Ive tried to like it but Alden isnt Han he just idk I just cant stand him in the movie theres a reason it tanked and it wasnt because of a 3 day holiday and cookouts

I don't disagree. He is a good actor, just didn't pull off Han for me.

I would actually want them to recast if they did that.
