#33 - A Frustrating Week Installing More Wooden Beams at Our Renovation Project in Central Portugal

  • It's a bit of a frustrating week at Casa das Parreirinhas 🌿 Not only does everything take twice as long as we think--if not longer--but there are a few things that need re-doing, too. Michael continues installing the beams, doing a spot of gardening, and we all head out for a walk after some interesting thunderstorms!
    About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕
We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescue dogs). After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are renovating a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be stepping back in time to create a character property with as many original features and antiques as possible.
Join us for the journey and don't forget to like, subscribe and comment! We love hearing from you 💛

You're getting on really well considering you're on your own. It looks tough manhandling those beams with just you. I got some help in for a few days each week for the last 3 weeks we were over & it made a massive difference, so much so we're able to stay/sleep in the house this next trip in a couple of weeks 🎉

Great job woth the joists! You have been weeding for some time - so, to keep the weeds away for a longer period of time, lay out cardboard and the wood chips on top (approx. 8-10 cm). The cardboard smothers the weeds and the wood chips then smother the rest. 😊

If you put some noggins inbetween the joists, you can reduce the twist.

understandable choices @18.28. My choice is buy electric planer flatten the top off the beam then re set the beam until top is level. leave bottom "twisted". free character contribution to the house.

After the job is done, nobody will think about the troubles and dus and cleaning. They only say well done.
But rubbish and dust is time consuming.
I do have a tip for lifting something. Think of ( and use) youre car jack.

Great effort on those floor beams, be careful lifting anything heavy. I'm intrigued, did you decide to keep the original stairs to the attic?
    House is coming along😊

Just wonder why you weed by hand because those weeds come don't they just by pulling them by the roots? Suggestion: I use in my gardens a nature friendly recipe of white vinegar, salt and dishwashing liquid for the weed killer recipe. What the ratios are I don't remember since I cant see my recipe because I am away from home right now but it kills the weeds to the roots and you don't have to spend hours weeding by hand you just spray it on with a pump sprayer. You should try it. It would save you a lot of time. Don't think it hurts paints. Good luck.

We're going to try that at our house renovation. If you don't mind sharing your mixing ratios that work, that would be great. Thanks - Stuart

If you washed the floors, so the floorboards come wet, they would come out easily

EXCELLENT, I'LL GIVE YOU A TIP FOR THE INTERVALS BETWEEN THE MOST DIFFICULT STONES, USE 1 EMPTY SILICONE PACKAGE WITH MORE LIQUID CEMENT AND INJECT IT, AND ALSO WITH 1 EMPTY WATER BOTTLE AND 1 FLEXIBLE TUBE YOU CAN DO THE SAME. HUGS

Will the weeds not just grow back through the wood chips? 😞

You’re doing a great job, but have you treated the wood with bug spray and you could have burned the ends of the wood to make them last longer. I’m just saying.
