For your information, the B57 has a closed deck because the block is exactly the same as the M3's engine. Which means it has to be extremely strong. We have a G30 530D with the B57. It is a gem. It has massive amounts of torque and power which is why it doesn't have VANOS, it simply doesn't need it. You also mentioned Valvetronic. It is irrelevant here. Given the operation of a Diesel engine, Valvetronic is not applicable to begin with. Finally I am not sure what you are referring to when saying: "Ignition system". Again, this is a Diesel??..
