Banned Judo techniques - Leg grabbing throws

- In 2013, International Judo Federation (IJF) made a controversial decision to ban all leg grabbing throws in their competitions. It is believed that the main reason was that they wanted to make Judo a more dynamic and spectator-friendly sport. A lot of people like this decision and a lot of people hate it. It doesn't matter what side you are on, you can't deny that competitive Judo lost some impressive throws. So here is a compilation with some amazing throws that involve leg grabbing.

What a shame, judo has lost many great techniques.
They just separated Judo into 3 different arts: Judo itself, wrestling and Jiu jutsu. Crosstraining different Grapling arts helps recover the primal Judo.
No .....this is not true. The Japanese feel embarrassed by their loss in war and in life. Whites and Blacks are far stronger and they hate it.
@@luongthanh105i have been a couple times to old school judo classes and i loved it.
Any martial art that becomes olimpic gets neutered.
For 50 years, judo was a normal Olympic form of wrestling, and it was sterilized in 1 day
The further “spectator friendly” they make Judo will result in it being neutered, just like what has happened to karate.
Couldn't agree more.
Also happened to king fu as well
before changing the rules of a sport, maybe they should have asked the practitioner what they think about it...
I still teach these at our club because Judo isn't only sport it is also self defense. AND you can use all these at grappling tourneys
In judo schools are these tecniques teached?
@@gustavobaptista7176 Not really, almost all Judo schools are dedicated to the sport as defined by the IOC. The original martial art that included a much more diverse grappling art is basically dead now. The problem is largely one of money, teaching a martial art doesn't pay the bills but teaching and coaching sports does.
@@SurmaSampo what make this new rules so stupid is that kata guruma is part of kata nage no kata. So if you want to be black belt you have to learn this technique
those kata-gurumas were the shit, as a bjj practitioner, this is the kind of judo I like .
If BJJ had different scoring you'd see so much cool stuff on the feet. Instead we can pull guard without sacrificing any points.
@@kace999 agree, pulling guard should be 2 points for the other guy, it would favor more takedown action or agressive guard play
Teddy Riner would've had a lot more losses if these techniques were allowed. It gave the shorter guy a lot more to work with.
Agree, short guys lost the most. Hey, if You can't defend a single/double leg, maybe You should work on it more, eh? How about that outrageous thought?
None of Teddy Rinner's losses in senior competition have been due to a leg grabbing tehcnique... Look at Teddy Riner's losses during the 2007~2010 period, none of them were due to leg grabs. You still need to win the gripfighting game if you want to go for leg grabs, and Riner has been by far the most dominant gripfighter at +100kg. I doubt much would have changed.
Doubt that. I am tall and I do short guys dirty.
Of course, that's the reason why he got bronze in 2008
@@Qunyc1985also, you are not an Olympic level judoka.
This is how a great sport neutered itself.

Goddamn, the Killer Instinct soundtrack works so well here. Surprised nobody thought of putting that on a Judo video before.
absolutely shameful that the olympics and IJF led to this
No martial art survives the Olympics.

What the IJF should have done to address the issues of the 2008 Olympics: only allow one hand below the belt. That would mean we'd still have huge throws like Kata Guruma, Te Guruma, and hand assisted Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi- while removing the type of Judo that led up to the rule changes.
Think about it, most of the throws in this video are done with only one hand below the belt.
the main reason i've heard back in the days was because at some point, eastern europe fighter (from Sambo mainly) competed very well against japanese and humiliate them with takedowns and throws bellow the belt.
@@gepetodelamorte8149 doesn't make sense because 1) jigoro kano liked western wrestling and even adopted some of its rules to judo competition and 2) judokas from all over the world were good at leg grabs, not just eastern Europeans. Nobody got completely beat just because of leg grabs.
@@gepetodelamorte8149 Kind of, but not exactly. What would happen is people would shoot for doubles and then just turtle, or get a point with a low single and then stall the rest of the match.
That's why I feel what I suggested above would be the best solution.
@@NickKano11 Thank you for clarification, i was quite young at the time.
@@gepetodelamorte8149 i've heard of it too, but look in this video you can see a lot of japanese judokas using leg grip. But anyway if you're good enough you can avoid those techniques. Look at Koga or Inoue for example that never stopped them to use ippon seoi nage or uchi mata
In February of 2013 wrestling was voted out of the Olympics. This is well documented.
The reason for the rule change was the IOC wanted stronger differentiation between the sports of Judo and Wrestling. The IOC came to both sports with a list of changes that were to be implemented. Judo said ok. Wrestling said "get bent" and wrestling was axed from the Olympics.
When wrestling came crawling back willing to implement the changes the IOC required; they were reinstated.
This is all well known and we'll documented.
Another unspoken, but widely known, reason for the removal of wrestling was to address blatant corruption at the top of FILA, the international governing body for wrestling.
Who really lead this interference ? Was it Judo or Wrestling or IOC politics? Where is the list? They are responsible for damages to our system scope? Imagine dropping wrestling! The IOC politics Swimming and athletics gang together and hate on and try and destroy other sports! 😢
@@JudoLifeI love your video about how judo can helps rugby tackle
That’s what I’d always heard
@@JudoLife The IOC doesn't care about sports. It cares about big crowds and big money from the games. It has been quite happy to destroy sports and the host city's economy for it's own financial gain. No martial art survives the Olympics.
Shame on IJF
Was this a clear thinking decision in the best interest of Judo? Did IJF really represent Judoka to make this huge decision on our behalf for the greater good? NO. Up until this moment techniques were excluded that had danger for safety. This is different. It was for styling judo. We lost so many great throws and a large section of judo became illegal. SHAME on our leader pen pushing politicians. They never represented me or you!
I was searching for a video or article where somebody compile those rule changes but didnt find one. For example, the rules that make ne waza basically not used, when and why were they implemented?
I used to do Ouchi Gari and Kouchi Gari holding the same leg attacked.
I was a Judo athlete for more than 10 years, these rules only hinder the beauty of the sport, if they forgot that Judo is a FIGHT modality, there will always be traumatic blows or that can cause some injury! Techniques like Kata Guruma, Morote Gari, and Kibisu Gaeshi can now no longer be used. Soon it will only be allowed to hold the gi, and the opponent to win will have to ask the opponent to please throw himself on the ground, as no throws will be allowed!
Some truly insane throws here!
What will happen next? Limiting to only using one arm in billiards? This ban in Judo rules is limiting Judo. It's destroying Judo. What happens when the moves get banned? People stop training it in a competitive way. Loses the edge.
Next the may ban ura nage and every technique from the bear hug.
with the music of Killer Instinct 😍, what a fantastic video
Почему запретили? Было настоящее дзюдо и хороший набор приёмов.Как же японцы это допустили?
А в Японии они зачастую борются по внутренним правилам. С разрешением этих техник.

Ох уж эти еврейцы.. Но зачем?!
I wrestled folk style back when some throws were stilled allowed and later I did freestyle. Anyone who says these leg grab throws/techniques looked too much like wrestling is out of their mind.
Well Sir, talk to the IOC and the IJF. Sincerely, a judoka who had seen a lot of ruling changes...
Even the double legs/morote gari from judo looks different to wrestling, judo version looks more like a rubgy takle or mma takedown not dropping the knees.
Time has passed, the Olympic overlords to whom the IJF bows must be satiated by now... so how about allowing at least one grip under the belt? That way we get lots of throws back but without people blasting double legs all over the place
Да , мы так и рубились в своё время
So now you don't train the most effective tecniques...??? :S
Train but not for judo competition.
Find the center and warp it
More like a mis direction attack with you hands and feet one side and body attack defenseless side while opponent defends attacked side
Leg grabs were removed to placate the IOC into not removing Judo from the roster when wrestling was removed, according to Neil Adams. There was pressure to more clearly differentiate the sports.
IJF could make two types of judo, with and without leg grab. Something like freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling.
At least we have SAMBO.
Sambo should be more popular.
Unfortunately, you're not allowed to choke in Sambo. Only limb submissions.
My BJJ coach is one of many who decided to quit Judo after they started banning stuff.
Real judo does not need a federation. It needs masters and people who want to continue the true legacy of this martial art.
One of the reasons why leg grabbing takedowns were banned was because wrestlers joined and dominated many of the top judokas.
Theres a School in Watkins Glen NY that still teaches old school Judo as a form of japanese jiu jitsu. I train at the 10th planet the next town over. Those guys are always spooky when they show up to a local BJJ tournament. Killer takedowns. Probably the only coach iv ever seen that teaches effective Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Might aswell be Kosen Judo or Submission Judo in the US northeast.
This is one of the worst ever decisions by the IJF. Made me lose almost all interest in judo.
Judo is supposed to be about maximum efficiency, min effort. Leg grabs do not violate this principle.
the killier instinct sountrack is dope
Awesome. I hope the IJF brings back leg grabbing throws.
Back when Judo was a complete standing grappling system.
Knew I recognized these songs! 🎸
To be fair, especially the first Kata Guruma looks pretty dangerous to me.
However, they could've just changed it so that youre no longer allowed to stand up when the opponent is on your shoulders. This way we still had the throw, but a bit less dangerous
It wasn’t a safety issue. It was done to make judo more aesthetically pleasing.
Stop being lazy until my grandma falls out of that kata guruma and walks away
@@NickKano11 a fireman carry can look awesome af, IJF rule makers are is clowns.
Also, who cares if a throw or takedown looks "boring"? If it is effective, it must remain.
I hate IJF
Getting punched in the head in boxing is dangerous, getting kicked in the liver in kickboxing is dangerous, martial arts are dangerous pursuits as they are the practical application of violence. Remove all the danger and all you left is a game.
I agree that they shouldn't be doing the front flip finish to kata guruma.
That's also being done because the rules for ippon are janky.
But OF COURSE you should be able to stand up from there! That's the whole idea!
Best throw at 2:05 mark. Amazing!! Second best at 5:46 mark!
Now you see real Judo. Not not the fake imposter of today.
I hate it when sports are changed to make them "spectator friendly". Balance based on the integrity of the competition, not how fun you perceive it is to watch.
Glad i learned theselots of fun
The dimelo from Josh Resnick at 8:18 never gets old.
This banned of those also makes it alot easier for less experience judokas too get medals against a more experience competitor...
They took out the most effective techniques.
Одни запреты и красота дзюдо только страдает
These techniques are my things before IJF banned those. I love all this because it is more effective for me to do the take down.
Sensei Kano most be rolling on his tomb
Killer insinct theme rocks!
Our Judoka Ancestors are turning over in there graves .. These traditional banned of judo throws in competition not only destroying your fighting spirit but it is disgraceful!
That was the real judo, the one I started in as a kid of 10 and retired before it got neutered and watered down.
Next up, “banned Judo techniques… on concrete.”
Judo has also other restrictions...i think it's a reason why some guys go to sambo now.
I started back in 2008 and my go to throw was kata gurma...and then 2010 happened ...with hard work and determination and major adjustments I eventually earned my black belt but it was a tough journey .The move to ban leg grabs was just a move to keep Japan still relevant on the podium,in my opinion, had things remained the same i believe that many up coming nations would have produced great fighters on an even playing field and eventually Japan would have just been known as the birth place of judo with other countries taking top spots in the sport .
Why? Please elaborate.
@@n4_ku hey what you would like me to elaborate on .
@@jsieunarine How other countries would take the top spot in Judo? Is Japan weak at lag grabbing?
@@n4_ku it's not that Thier weak at leg grabs but other countries would fair a good chance ,it's like when it comes to wrestling what countries are the top gold medals in the Olympics.
"Changing rule to keep Japan win" is the most stupid explanation to the rule change I have ever heard. The whole reason just doesn't make sense at all. Even at 2012 Olympic where Japan did not perform well, they still won a couple of silver and bronze. And their loss was not due to leg grab. So how was leg grab ban help Japanese? Especially when Japanese were in fact quite good at leg grabbing...
I am wondering if there is an alternative international organization which offers old style judo tournaments?
Closest thing you could get is probably this: th-cam.com/video/4-SvasNrCxo/w-d-xo.html
This style of grappling was probably founded on the idea to make Brazilian Jiu Jitsu more entertaining by discouraging guard pulling and incentivizes players to be more explosive.
We’re these techniques removed from the judo curriculum ? Or were they just banned from competition ?
Someone must of complained that was not fair.
IJF started to band techniques. 😂
Man, it was way more fun.
And way more injuries...I loved leg grabs, but I have to recognize training was harder, like a fight to survive every freaking lesson

Does anyone have any idea what the rules are for leg grabs in sumo?
Judo also used to have a lot of ground/mat work. What happened to that part?
Bruv it was judo that created most fundamental techniques of bjj including... leg submissions.
5:04 technique name plz I AM BEGGING. this was my favorite throw but dont remember how was it called
Looks like a hybrid between Kata-Guruma and Kibishu Gaeshi
It's crazy to me these takedowns are banned..
This is the Killer Instinct beat. I know because I lived through this time period.
Banning leg attacks heavily advantages tall slim athletes from the more marketable areas of Europe and Asia while discriminating against shorter more powerful Soviet Bloc athlete and Mongolians
Espetacular
I used a lot Morote Gari😪
Neil Adams has to take some responsibility as well. He was apparently on the committee, or some such bs
I was a kid when they decided to change the rules. I remember that all tournaments at this time on low-mid lvl was dominated by tai-otoshi and - morote-gari. That throw was really stupid and, honestly, i aint miss it.
why not first round not allowing it and then the next round allow it? And see if the technique is overused because it's easier scoring a takedown or not.
The first throw looks like a pro wrestling version of a fireman throw. LOL 😅
I also saw a Rock bottom.
Damn i really miss Te Guruma
All of them throws and takedowns should be reinstated into the art. Im not a practitioner of Judo so I don't know if they are still taught in the art and just not allowed in competition.
Judo is not only a sport, so for the belts advancement there is a technical program to be studied and it encompasses all the Kodokan (the principal and first judo institution) established tecniques.
All the stupid rule changes are the reason I gave up judo many years ago as a 2nd dan. It's now no longer so exciting and to me, is quite boring to watch nowadays.
Stupende.....
Next they'll only allow o soto gari. Bring all those leg grabbing back.
Верните натуральное дзюдо!
As security, I need to train leg trowing 😢it could be useful in self defense situation
In theory these techniques are still useful and perfectly legal in BJJ. The problem is BJJ practitioners’ underdeveloped standing game as a result of the pointing system which rewards takedowns poorly and strongly groundwork-oriented mentality.
Someone told me a joke long time ago, the martial art will be more powerful after it becomes a "sport". I think Judo probably initiated this joke and added a good punch line to finish this joke
You know every one of these bad asses loves karate kid part 2 😏
My favourite throw was T Guruma shame they have banned them can,t understand why.
What on earth would even give them the idea that getting rid of these techniques would make judo more exciting….
i absolutely hate they banned them >_
If this is not expectador friendly, I don't know what is...
I think the rules changed to benefit the Japanese Judoka.
Yes, it's not said by anyone, but everyone at that time knnew that it was strongly wanted by the japanese federation in order to stop the overpower of the russian school.
It didn't worked, it just has made Judo more poor, but that's what you get when politics mix with real things.
Yuuuuup
If that's true, it'd apply to Georgians as well.
Cuz there's no such thing as leg grabs in Chidaoba, Georgia's traditional wrestling.
In the 1990s, All Japan Judo Federation(AJJF) opposed the introduction of blue judogi in a big way.
European Judo Union(EJU) decided to introduce blue judogi at international competitions in Europe in 1994.
In response, when AJJF indicated its intention to boycott the competitions, EJU reversed its decision.
However, AJJF gave in to the wishes of Europe after Park, supported by EJU, became president of the IJF in 1995.
In contrast, AJJF has never expressed any opposition to leg grabs.
After Vizer became IJF president in 2007, IJF no longer had anyone on the board of directors from Japan.
Under these circumstances, How can the European-led IJF be at the beck and call of Japan?
To be precise, there have been two board members since 2013, when a total ban on leg grabs was decided.
However, both of these are mere decorations since they don't have voting rights.
The end of real Judo.
There goes half the discipline 😂
I remember day one of judo double legging everyone in the class easily.
As most agree Judo got ruined by these cowardly and/or greedy for cash (entertainment over practicality) ideas and the martial arts cut from judo was so useful it became one of the most successful martial arts in the modern era Brazilian Jiu Jitsu… it seems bjj will eventually go full circle combing wrestling judo Sambo and ne waza to become good judo again ( that’s at least in adcc where takedowns matter more)
3:22 judo style of gut wrench😅
I only recently got aware of the tournament aspects and its rules of judo. I simply never cared about it, assuming it would be something realistic.
Then, a few days back I watched a judo tournament for the first time and I could not follow any decisions made. I did not get why someone got penalties, I did not get why someone scored... How can this be more spectator friendly?
There was also nearly no ground fighting. Which - contrary to some BJJ fanboys - is a big part of judo as a sport.
So maybe - to make it truly spectator friendly they should drop all that point awarding nonsense and have submission matches instead. My humble opinion on the matter.
They didn't want wrestlers from the former soviet block countries to dominate. What a stupid decision
The only thing that improved is that you don't see people bulldoze each other from the mats anymore trying to go for a leg takedown. Otherwise I just don't see it.
That's why they should have made it that you can only have one hand below the belt. You'd have awesome throws like Kata Guruma and Te Guruma, and get rid of the mindless rugby tackles.
@@NickKano11 I agree. Or maybe only allow leg takedowns after establishing a grip on the upper body.
@@prvtthd401 Yeah I think Freestyle Judo did that.

I believe it was to screw us up Cubans. The Cuban judo school took a lot from wrestling. They trained in contiguous areas in Cerro Pelado.
As I see things developing today, in the future Judo will only hold throws for kindergarten. IT IS a MARTIAL ART, period, if you do not want to get hurt do gardenry, weavering or chess. Reducing it only to be a harmless sport is like prostituting its soul.
3:25 deadlift
It's always amazing how federations keep shitting on traditional martial arts for sake of olympics. Fuck em! Stay true to your practice, be martial, live the art!
