I love the linndrum... so iconic. It was used in so many songs and it sounds so good. It's truly a piece of retro goodness with it's beautiful wooden trim.
Got to see THE most famous LINN (LM1 specifically)ever in person today at Prince’s Paisley Park. Sitting right next to his Oberheim. Take the Ultimate Tour if you go, you won’t regret it.
Almost the entire album of Daniel Lavoie "Tension Attention" released in 1983 was programmed by Daniel DeShaime on the first LinnDrum available in Canada at the time. Producer John Eden (Der Kommissar) decided that it was so great, he recorded all the drum tracks before recording the other instruments. All they had to do after that was to follow the beat. :D
1. Queen - Radio Ga Ga - 0:10 2. The Twins - Balett Dancer - 0:40 3. Diego - Walk In The Night - 1:10 4. Irene Cara -Flashdance (What a Feeling) - 1:41 5. Gary Low - I Want You - 2:19 6. Madonna - Dress You Up - 2:57 7. Bronski Beat - Small-town Boy - 3:25 8. A-Ha - Take On Me - 3:59 9. Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round - 4:27 10. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax - 5:09
You Spin Me Round (Like a record), Relax and Flashdance...What a Feeling were all done on a Linn LM-1 Drum Computer. In You Spin Me Round, the cowbell was tuned high and only the LM-1 had all the sounds tunable. The cowbell on the LinnDrum can’t be tuned. Take on me did use the LinnDrum, but A-Ha used different sounds.
I’m just now learning about the Roland 808 and the Linndrum. Of course I’ve known about the 808, but I’ve never realized that this is what dominated the radios back in the 80’s.
You Spin Me Round (Like a record) was done on a LM-1, not the LinnDrum. A good indication is that the cowbell is tuned high, and only on the LM-1 were all the sounds tunable. On the LinnDrum, however, only the snares, slapstick, and the congas were tunable. This was the drawback of the LinnDrum, as not all the sounds were tunable.
This is probably my favourite drum machine since, the sounds on it are just so fantastic and produce great rhythms when used in songs or music in general.
Nice! I love this machine so much...it's so punchy. Some other great songs with it: "Solid" by Ashford & Simpson, "Flesh for Fantasy" by Billy Idol; all of the Scarface soundtrack; Godley & Creme's "Cry"; the Top Gun, Miami Vice and Axel F themes; just about every Miami Sound Machine and Pointer Sisters song; "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" by Tears for Fears; and last but not least, the Blade Runner soundtrack, by the always amazing Vangelis.
A public FAVOR, please, since there are many stupid people in this world who apparently throw tantrums without a reason - please don't complain that there's no Prince in this ten-song demo video. Besides the fact than with ten songs there's not space to cover everybody, the main reason is that the most iconic Prince songs didn't use the LinnDrum, but the Linn LM-1. When I will get an LM-1 and make a video about it, you can be sure that there will be Prince songs in it. If you're not familiar with the LM-1, please look it up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linn_LM-1
To be fair (re: Human League), though Martin Rushent has said it was LM-1, Phil and the girls don't help matters! :P They routinely insist that it was the LinnDrum, when _all_ documentation shows it was an LM-1. The LinnDrums had *_yet_* to be introduced at that time. And as per the wiki article: unfortunately, the list of users has been removed; supposedly it was "objective", even though evidence can be found all over the web :P
When the 'Radio Ga Ga' pattern started, I immediately began humming the synth bass riff from Human League's "Don't You Want Me", but I believe that earlier track used the LM-1. I'd never noticed the similarity between the two songs before. (I hated the Queen track at the time, but still love Human League).
thank you for clearing that up. I ALWAYS thought it was the LinnDrum. I just need a power cable and some headphones and a prayer and see if she still boots.
Great work guys! Would love to hear some Human League as Dare was pretty much done using a Linn Drum, legend has it the producer (Martin Rushent) took delivery of a Linn during the making of the album and they decided to use it on all tracks.
Abacab also used the TR808. The linndrum is used on Mama (distorted by a fender amp), Just a job to do, Invisible Touch, Tonight tonight tonight (with the SDS7), Land of confusion, Domino, Throwing it all away. CR78 is used on Duchess, Me and sarah jane. TR808 is used on No reply at all, Man on the corner, Taking it all too hard, In too deep, Domino (there is some stuff in pt2 on the studio version). The MCS is used on Silver rainbow
I really liked Wham's "Battle stations" which I believe is also the LinnDrum. Of course they did process the sound quite a bit with EQ and gated reverb etc. But the pitched up snare sounds really cool in this track.
I knew your site for quite a long time for pre investigation before buying stuff. But this channel is like an interactive museum of pop music. I can linger here for days!
In regards to Take On Me, A-Ha swapped out the original ROMs, which sounds different from this. Relax was done on a Linn LM-1 as the claps were tuned a little lower. You Spin me Round (like a record) was also done on the LM-1 as the cowbell was tuned to a higher pitch.
Relax has crash sounds tho, So I think they actually did use the LinnDrum instead of the LM-1. (plus, relax has 3 different tom sounds, the LM-1 can only do 2).
I’ve used them extensively, and have always preferred the Linndrum. Similar sounds but some are better, beginning with the kick that is one of the best kick samples ever made. LM-1 has only a few extra sounds, the kick sucks in comparison and the only real advantage is individual tuning which is no big deal. I had Linn modify one of the extra slots for tuning, can put sounds in there if needed.
Bert Steemers The Linn LM-1 could be modified to include the crash and the ride sound. Relax used the LM-1 also. I can tell the different between the LM-1 and the LinnDrum. On the LM-1, all sounds were tunable, whereas the on the LinnDrum, only the snare, slapstick, and the congas were tunable. The LinnDrum did have higher quality samples, and was $2,500 cheaper than the LM-1. Between the two, if I had to make a choice, it would be the LM-1.
That entire Relax album is Linndrum heaven. Anyone who knows these sounds can immediately ID the kick, which is arguably the best kick ever on a drum machine. LM-1 kick no comparison, and isn’t what’s heard on most early-mid 80s records.
+Ted Lewis Hi Ted, thank you, - would you please look up the difference between LM-1 and LinnDrum - if you read the comments you'll find that nine-ten people have already posted the same comment. Prince's most characteristic sound was from the LM-1, which I don't have yet.
I agree I would love to see them do that, but I think they wouldn't see (kinda rightfully so) a market in cloning sample based gear because that kind of beats the point of sample based gear + there is not really a profitable market in something that can be done by paying 5 dollars for a sample pack in contrast to cloning an analog circuit which is so specific and cost inefficient that nobody want's to take that route (so there is a market). Please don't read this as a that typical super bitchy "ik know better" comment's 😅. That wasn't my intention if it happened anyways. Believe me I would throw my money at such a machine. Or even a machine that only replicates those beautiful designs/colors/unpractical keys etc. It sure would add a hell of a lot of character to any homestudio. Guess I'm just kinda bringing my own hopes down to prevent disappointment :P
Many artists swapped the ROMs out for their own sounds with this machine because it was so easy (each sound in a separate IC). Because of this it's not always obvious what songs this unit was used on. For example there is a video on youtube with Pat Mastelotto showing his modded LM-1 used on Mr. Mister tracks. th-cam.com/video/22d_cs4Y9jg/w-d-xo.html
This was the first time I've ever heard isolated Linn Drum sounds and I'm impressed with how good they sound. A Linn Drum machine is way too expensive for me to be able to afford but there might be a cd of samples for sale somewhere that I could import into my Studio One Impact drum machine to use. If anyone knows of somewhere that sells a cd of samples that has Linn Drum, plus Roland TR808 and 909 on there too would you let me know where I can get one please? Cheers 👍
Jammy Git if you haven’t found it yet, check out SamplesFromMars website. Once or twice a year they have a sale when you can buy their full collection for a huge discount ($25? $15? I forget) and it has soooooo many machines (and synths) sampled super clean, also thru a desk w some saturation, and some of them also onto tape w saturation. Super usable in the way the original machines would be. Nothing highly processed, nothing LoFi or “house”, just the sounds of those real classic boxes recorded so we don’t have to. Only problem is digging through those mountains of folders!!
On-line there's a guy called Aly James who has produced a VST with LM-1 sounds, it sounds so realistic, it made my day. It includes the famous and very specific Prince When Doves Cry drum sounds. Check it out on-line if you're interrested in the LM-1 sounds. I don't remember if the software is free or if I paid something like 40 bucks for it back then but it is so worth it.
Superb 👍🏻 thanks. Could you demo how they got the classic Linn drum sound on Rose Royce’s “ Love Don’t Live Here Anymore" please ? Keep up the great videos thanks.
Didn’t Prince have both of them in the 80s, even if he favored the LM-1? The LinnDrum and Roland S-50 snare drum were heard in the songs “What Have You Done for Me Lately” and “Nasty Boys” and 1990 Whitney Houston song “I’m Your Baby Tonight”.
Not at all, actually. Most of the first 80s was Linn, Oberheim and some 808, and most of these were just straight out of the box sounds..the sounds then were better than today’s, didn’t really need much already very punchy.

That snare sound! Oh how I love it! Nothing else comes even close to the true original!
Needs more cowbell
Rodger Linn shaped the sound of pop music from the early 80s and onward. A God.
This is so much fun to watch and listen to! Very cool idea - you're awesome!
+Steven Morris Thank you very much, you're too kind!
I really like the Dead or Alive pattern, You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), never stop dancing with it. :)
You Spin Me Round (Like a record) was done on a LM-1, not the LinnDrum. A good indication is that the cowbell is tuned high, and only on the LM-1 were all the sounds tunable. The song "Dress You Up" came out in 1985.
Awesome job, and the ones on 808 & 909 too! A blast from the past ;)
The You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) and Relax patterns give me The Blue Oyster vibes. 😆
LOVE this video so much!!
I heard some probably 1985 song the LinnDrum was heard in at the restaurant at 6:56PM in January 26, 2022.
In the song "I Might Be" (2021), the LinnDrum was really heard.
Awesome programming!!Thanks!! Theres a 'LinnDrum' for sale on Ebay now i may blow my savings and grab one!!!
It’s crazy and amazing how one drum sound could be the staple of a generation and a sonic cue for the nostalgic ear.

Why is there no Prince in this demo?
AND I QUOTE: "PRINCE's iconic classic machine was the LM-1, not the LinnDrum."
The LinnDrum was really heard in the 1983 Kids Incorporated versions of the songs "Gloria" and "Physical".
What a fantastic sounding machine,still.
Number 5 is also Human League "Do or die" , and 6 is also "Open your heart". HL had one of the first Linn Drums in the UK..
Classic drum and bass lines for so many hinrg classics, back in the day..

Wham!'s Everything She Wants and Genesis' Tonight Tonight Tonight are some of the best LinnDrum patterns IMHO.

They did use a CR-78, but only on the albums 'Duke' and 'Abacab'
