Those day one feelings are awful, then you meet someone, or see something and realise, this is what ‘life’ is all about. You settle into your routine, watch the weather, think of fish and chips, good coffee, where’s the next camp to be? Maybe sit in a nice clean stream somewhere and wash off the day’s muck and dust. All good. The trip soon comes to an end. Memories stored, gear washed and stored, ready for next time. Great!
All very true. It's just the shock of changing to a different pace and not being sure if you have everything required to deal with it. I'm fully engaged now and having a great time
You are spot on about barriers to cycling. We cycled near your old stomping ground from Reading to Newbury and gave up on the Kennet and cycled along Bath Road dual carriage way instead. Last weekend we cycled from Staines to Kingston on the Thames, 99% cycle friendly but the 1% really is bad enough to put you off. Full marks to the UK for slashing the active travel budget.
@@JethroJessop I must say you described it well - even down to the "ooo is that my leg aching' and having those second thoughts. But soon as you turn those pedals, any doubts leave you.
Useful info on the barriers, Jethro, thanks. The presence of stiles, locked gates and kissing gates makes any path or trail completely inaccessible to those of us who use mobility scooters. I dream of the day when it's taken for granted that we are entitled to access the country like non-disabled people.
That will indeed be a fine day. Though I fear it may be a long way off ☹️ It's been better today as I'm further out. Still plenty of gates but that is the way of things round here with all the roaming livestock
Always great to stumble across a new channel (to me). I have done a tiny little bit of the PBW a few weeks ago on a gravel bike following Calder Divide which from this short day 1 seems to have the same annoyances; seemingly putting you on footpaths and questionable terrain. The short section of PBW I navigated was around Saddleworth and what I shall call the "little house on the priare" M62 bridge crossing and there were wonderful views over towards Manchester and the surrounding towns. I shall certainly be heading that way again in the future. Look forward to day 2. =)
Great to have you on board! I'm glad you are enjoying the vids. Day 2 will follow fairly soon hopefully and I'll try to get them all out with less than a week between if I can. So far I'm not finding it quite as hard as the PBW but it's not far off. I'm just about to set off on day 4 so we shall see where that ends me up. Thanks for watching 😀

Yeah another trip!😃👍 Yes same here; months of preparation and on the day I leave I don’t want to go any more (even a few tears 🥲) half hour later it’s all smiles and loving the solitude adventure 😄

I've considered packing bolt cutters except they're as heavy as my bike... that and I'm not really one for breaking things when a strongly-worded comment on TH-cam vents my frustration just as well. 😄
The thing is that this route is in no way "official". It's just something that some folk put together and stuck online as far as I know. You seem to have taken the kamoot route, the other route heads out of Manchester more to the west and heads towards Bury on NCN6. I've ridden some of this and didnt come across any obstacles and its less lumpy!
I got mine from RideWithGPS but it was linked from the official site. It's not a massive problem really, they are all just lines on a map and I'm enjoying myself for sure. I saw there were a few optional routes but the differences seemed too slight to argue about.
I have no issue riding on a footpath if the need arises but just be prepared to give way to pedestrians. Just common sense really. Hate being forced onto roads for the sake of it being designated a footpath. Cycling infrastructure still has a way to go in this country.
I'm the same, I'll ride on a footpath if it seems ridable and I'm not going to annoy anyone. But, when I'm on a fully loaded bike I don't want to be continually routed along footpaths that require me to lift my bike over styles, gates and walls. Just seems like weird choices for a public bike route to me
