    Interesting what you said about some places using patterns for wrapping paper. I recently ordered fabric from an online store and they used a scrunched up pattern to pad out the box. It was an out of date pattern but all the pages were there, so I ironed it flat and folded it and looked it up to see what it was. It was great, dress, top, trousers and all for free. No instructions but I can cope with that.

    I made my own basic blocks and spent some time learning simple pattern drafting, so if there’s something particular I want to sew, I can make it up from the block instead. I also look for free patterns online and even if I end up spending a few bucks as a “thanks” to the creator, it’s less than buying a big four pattern. My thrift shops must throw patterns out since I never see any there. And copying your current clothing is always an option!

      The new New Look and Simplicity patterns at my JoAnn Fabric are often on sale for around $3. Vogue, not quite as cheap, but still, I'll gladly pay $3 to avoid having to print, cut, and tape a pattern! Makes me feel less bad when I mess one up. 😓

    Often, the styling on pattern envelopes really doesn't do the patterns justice! Line drawings are key. If you learn to do even a little bit of modification, you don't need hundreds of patterns, you can make pretty much anything from a few basics. Great video, Evelyn! I hope your treatment is going well. Hang in there, beautiful lady! ❤

    I love the 70 patterns 1) because the patterns are what I learned to sew with.2) they have the best instructions3) they are timeless. Thank you Evelyn for this advice it's a great way to save money and space. Praying this finds you well.

    I haven’t even finished watching this and I already know this is going to be super helpful! I just wish my thrift store had patterns still. But I did pick some up from my mother Inlaw and a couple from a repurpose store before they stopped being open to the public.
    One of the patterns I’m proudest of is actually a pants/Jeans fitting booklet and pattern that is pretty well known.
    Another tip! If you have a basic woven top pattern that’s got a dart or two darts and set in sleeve you can turn that into a block/sloper with some work and fitting learned and doing that from TheClosetHistorian.

    A local thrift store near me in Australia sells patterns for $1. Some of them good vintage as well. Many other antique stores nearby have them for $5-10. One of my treasures is a pattern in great condition from the 1930's. I now have an entire bookshelf dedicated to my 390+ patterns :D

      I also can't fully explain the excitement of an old cheap pattern in a tattered yellowing envelope and inside the pattern is UNTOUCHED factory folded. So satisfying. Very addictive, even.

    I've found that as a plus sized person getting the Cashmerette book has been the best investment for me. It's $35 in Canada and comes with patterns that are graded for plus sized bodies and has bodice pieces for multiple bust sizes. For years I tried with the big 4 patterns and they were nothing but trouble and a ton of mandatory adjustments since I was in the size range that they only make a few (often really ugly) patterns in. With a better starting point I can make nicer stuff and not waste money on patterns from companies that don't even approach a 50+ inch bust.

    • @expatpiskie
      @expatpiskie ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you on the Cashmerette book, I also have a 50+ bust and a D sewing cup. Sewing most commercial patterns involves an FBA & large tummy adjustment and that can be off-putting when you just want to get on with sewing.
      I also have some of the Cashmerette patterns that I purchased before the book came out & it is so nice to not have to faff about & just cut them out & have the garments fit.

    • @jowhight3606
      @jowhight3606 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another vote for cashmerette…I am only now learning to sew because big 4 patterns were beyond me. I still need to do an FBA on a g/h cupped garment but it is so much easier with the help of the fitting book. I no longer have to wear men’s tops

    I learnt to sew in the 1970s, it was still cheaper to make than to buy and there was an abundance of patterns and fabric shops! I’m still making today ( and all the decades in between) and I love the size range that you can get from the indie designers, I’m rounder and less standard size as the years have passed! But great video as ever. I do hope and pray you are keeping well much love x

    I have a whole box full of 50's patterns, but they are all cut out, and the lady I bought them from had a very petite figure. I have been scared to try and alter them to fit me.

    • @arvettadelashmit9337
      @arvettadelashmit9337 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don't alter you original pattern tissues. Trace those original pattern tissues onto paper (news paper, wrapping paper, packing paper, freezer paper, etc.) then alter your traced patterns. Make notes on your traced patterns about any changes you made. Never put tape on your original pattern tissues. However, you can use tape and extra paper to make your traced patterns bigger or smaller.

    I am recently getting back into sewing garments. I did sew these years ago, I went to a thrift shop this week to check out what they had for patterns. They had tons! I was sifting through them, some of them looked very familiar to me. Imagine my Suprise when I saw one with my daughters name on it! I had given all of my patterns to a friend that sewed a lot. She's had them for years, and has gone through cancer treatment. She can't spend much time sewing these days, so I understand rehoming patterns. I just got such a giggle seeing my old patterns!

    I started sewing in 1974 when I was 12 years old, and I still have just about all of my patterns. Fortunately, I'm still about the same size, so I'm still using some of them. Sizing really has changed a lot. I wore a size 6 back then in both patterns and store-bought clothing, and now I wear a size 2 petite or 0 regular in store-bought clothing -- even though I'm slightly bigger. 🤷‍♀

    I feel if we ever compared our collection of vintage patterns, sewing and pattern books, they are probably quite similar. I used to draw the line at at late 60s from opshops, but now in Melbourne that's pretty rare, unless it's one of the reissued vintage patterns. I now have started collecting 70s and 80s patterns for there 30s thru to 50s looks. I always love your shopping haul videos and refashioning. Something I've not seen discussed here is pattern magazines. Every month you can get magazines with many patterns, like 20-30. I wouldn't say they're all great but it's a good way to get dozens of patterns very cheaply.
    Unless theres something horribly wrong with them that I don't know about?

    The problem in my land is that these older patterns have become quit popular, and more often cost even more then a new one. Same with the sewing book you recommended from Readers Digest, the best sewing book. I have been looking for it, and found a whole range of people bidding on that book, every time somebody offered one. Some bid over 80 euros!!! I still don't have it, for I can not afford it. Even IF I could afford it, I would not pay that much for a sewing book, no matter how good, it is riciculously much to me. I did buy Bernadette Banner's book, it teaches me all I want to learn. At least for now. Still, thank you for all the tips, I am yet to begin using patterns, and I learned a lot over you now! (Again!) I hope your treatment is going well, and that you are doing fine now! I worry for you. Much love, and a big hug! ❤🤗

    I love collecting patterns and have a great range of 40’s,50’s,60’s and 70’s patterns. It’s usually the first place l head to in an opp shop, patterns and the fabric section. I remember the day l found a suitcase of amazing patterns in an opp shop and another woman and l shared the spoils at $1.00 for each pattern. It was an incredible find of 40s 50s and 60s patterns.I recently decided to collect some 80s patterns as well. I do find most Indi patterns are just so basic and expensive for what they are, and if you purchase a PDF the costs of printing on top of that seems a big investment as well. The big four aren’t producing much of interest either.

    I find vintage sewing patterns by the boxes full at estate sales. We go to them regularly. I thoroughly enjoy looking through them. More often than not the cashier throws my pattern selections in with my other purchases FREE. When I have to pay, it's never more than 50 cents each. Needless to say, I have a large collection. Now I need to start sewing some of them! I can sew fairly well but I all ready own a lot of vintage clothing. I also buy vintage clothing from estate sales. It's a wonderful problem, actually. 😊

    I’ve kept my patterns from when I started sewing, so late sixties on, also some of my mother’s and second hand too - BIG collection now!

    Thinking of you on your treatment journey, hope it is going well. Just received 3 good quality t-shirts from thrift store to make my 1yr old niece some shirts or maybe a pair of pants for a few dollars. Washed them & are ready when I am.

    I found a gold mine for 80/90s which sucks bc I’m more of a 40/50s type of gal, I tried to keep as much as I can but a lot of them were the business suits for the 80s

    Great and informative video. Thank you. Here in the UK I recently took a load of patterns that don't use anymore to a charity shop.
    Guess what? They didn't want them. They told me that there wasn't any call for them. I was totally shocked. I would love to have a good old rummage through a load of unwanted patterns.

    Should one care about the size of the pattern when shopping for patterns in a second-hand store? I could understand a beginner/ less experienced sewist. However, if you are learning to sew, these patterns are perfect for learning how to alter a pattern to your size. You'd rarely find "your size," but I would encourage sewists to buy them anyway and use them for that purpose.

    If you wear out a pattern, buy either standard interfacing (not fusible) or they sell a type specifically to make/ copy patterns.

    A high percentage of my clothes are made from 2nd hand patterns. You gave some very good tips. I'd like to add, only purchase uncut patterns. I learned by experience that not all pattern pieces get back in the envelope before donating, or the first owner altered the pattern to fit their body, and unless you're going for the exact same alteration the pattern won't work for you.

    I have three thrift stores that I will frequent for sewing patterns and supplies but for those in the states, Joann will also put an entire brand of patterns on sale for $1.99 every couple of weeks!

    I am trying to get back into sewing, so I found your video to be very informative. I saw some patterns at a thrift shop a few weeks ago, but disregarded them because they were old. Now I have some knowledge of what to look for!
    You mentioned that we must go by our measurements, not size. If the pattern is a one-size pattern and it’s not made for my measurements, I won’t buy it. Is there a way to alter patterns that are smaller than or larger than my size?
