I’m sure many of us are concerned for Evelyn’s health during these months following her revealing video. I pray for her during this very difficult time in her life. She is a precious soul.
Hi Evelyn! I'm new to your videos; just found you. I am a maker & a woodworker with a bit of an artsy bent...My mother was a master seamstress, and passed away last year. Her last year was a fight with dementia, and we coped with it together. She and I were so close. It was simply amazing what she could do with a sewing machine and thread. In her heyday, she sewed for 3 Miss Americas, and was a model herself for JCPenny. She sewed all of my clothes while I was growing up, including my Homecoming princess promenade dress, and gown and all of my prom dresses. Long story short- she left everything; sewing machine, fabric, etc. She tried to get me interesed over the years, and I would try but just was not interested...opting for painting, woodwork, and almost everything else....Recently, (I am in my late 50's) I've begin suffering from my knees wearing out, LOL...and needed to find something kinder to my body to vent my creative urges, and I came across an old dress in an odd place that Mom made for the Navy Ball of 1950-something...it was a beautiful brocade, off-white with lime green tinsel brocade. I looked at it, it was all lined and you could see almost NO stitching..it was absolutely gorgeous (and tiny, probably an 8). I remembered I had all of her sewing stuff in storage and right away I cleaned up my SheShed and re-vamped it for sewing! I unpacked the boxes, and relived memories of my childhood...seam rippers, nippers, her wrist pincushion with the pins with colored heads that would eat me alive as she stood me on a stool and fitted my clothes. I was in tears, but it was so precious and such a treasured moment. In the bottom was an article of clothing of hers, and in the pocket was a pair of earrings I'd been searching for, for a year. It was like a gift and an a message from mom that she was happy I was finally taking the time to sew. Now, don't get me wrong- I have some experience sewing...I did a stint of quilting, apron making, sewing for the Dorcas ministry at church- walker & wheelchair organizers, and the like, but never clothes. I just wanted to do quick-and-dirty craft sewing. As I upacked her things and relived those memories, I became more excited that his is what I'm going to do. :). Thank you for your videos so I can refresh my sewing skills, and hopefully lean on to get a little help as I start sewing clothing for myself (work clothes). I see in you the same excitement, passion and love for sewing, and it's just lovely. I know you are fighting a fight right now, but I wanted to write all of this to let you know that you have a lovely way about your teaching and tutorials, and if I'm hooked after watching a couple of them, I have not doubt that you are well loved by your community, and covered in prayer and positive wishes. Sending you my own best wishes, and thanks to have discovered you in the absence of having guidance from my Mom. Cheers!🥰
Your lovely message brought me to tears. Your mother will no doubt be so proud of you and watching over you on this journey of sewing. I love how you found the earrings and feeling it was your gift 🎁 beautiful. Enjoy your sewing journey ❤
Just read your health update (Sept). I'm welling up over the good news, and yet understand there may be a bump in the road ahead. Wishing you continued healing, and in the mean time I'm re-watching some old videos (incl. the ads).
Me - my first ever sewing choice - plaid flannel shirt. "This will be easy - right?!" HA!! I learned plackets, collars, cuffs, stay stitches, collar stays, interfacing, top stitching, button and button hole placement, hemming, sleeves (OMG - SLEEVES!!). And - for some unknown reason - Maybe just the sewing gods laughing at all my effort, I forgot about matching the plaids. BUT - they did manage to come out (in the front at least). 😂. I'm now about 10 months into sewing and learning just how much I DON'T know about it! THANK you Evelyn for continuing in your mission with such a bright and cheery countenance! I love watching your videos and skimming through older clips. This channel is a godsend for ladies (or men) like me that have no siblings, mothers, grandmothers, fathers, brothers or other close family members to run to with the burning questions at 5AM on a Saturday morning, or at 10PM on a Thursday night. I can't wait to learn to design my own clothes and stop playing with everyone else's work - and YES - I've already started fiddling with my serger 😁
Each new project is struggle-struggle-struggle-DING! New skill aquired! And with each new skill we learn, the easier it is to learn the ones that come after.
Sewing since I was 9 years old, I’m now 77. So appreciate your skills and ability to teach, I’m checking on your story. I had a breast biopsy last week and awaiting my results. My younger sister endured the process and is clear now for 20 years. I applaud your courage and strength and hope that I fair half as well. Best wishes to us both.
Your "how many 'things' in this pattern are new to me" method has been an absolute GAME CHANGER for my sewing journey! Just earlier today I was looking at a new Butterick pattern listed as "easy" that included button epaulettes, an invisible zipper, an waist tie, a statement lapel, and both woven AND knit fabric including knit neckband and armbands. I've only mastered two of those - none of those skills are individually hard, but i know that for me it's too much right now. Sanity saved! You're a gem 💎 And thank your for showing an example of how you can take the same pattern and make slightly different choices that result in a completely different garment. As a newbie sewist i am still learning how to visualize pattern possibilities, this is super helpful! 🤩
I stumbled on your site recently as I've restarted sewing after a 10 year hiatus and wanted some tips. And just today I saw your video from 4 months ago regarding your diagnosis. EVELYN HEALTH UPDATE - I searched and found Evelyn’s Go-Fund me page. She has October 15, 2023 update saying she’s feeling good, but more treatment to go through.
I've pattern matched several garments. The key is pattern matching before cutting out the pieces (lots of pinning). And lots of pinning before beginning to sew seams... sometimes even thread basting to get some patterns to line up. ... But believe me! It's well worth the effort to get the results. Most people never notice but I know! And I stand a little taller with pride when I wear those garments. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷. Ps. Hope this comment finds you strong as we are all behind you.😊

I love the way you put the stripes on the pockets. I never thought about breaking down sewing into "skills" but it makes such sense. I teach an occasional class for beginners and I will remember the way you described the differences from simple/beginner to advanced. Thanks and hope you are feeling well. I've been thinking about you❤
Evelyn, I hope your recovery is going well. I only like some vintage lines, but I must say this skirt it fantastic. It's amazing how many looks the same pattern can be created. I didn't realize the accent area near the waist was an actual pocket. It takes the striped skirt to a whole new level of sophistication and creativity. It's a WOW in my opinion.
Wonderful. Thank you for continuing to put these out. I hope everything is going well for you. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember there are many of us here that have gone through life changing events. I know that I would be happy to listen or whatever you need. Sometimes it is easier to talk to a stranger than a close relative. I am here anytime. Julie
I hope you are doing well. Been a lurker for many years on and off, but lost my sewing mojo when the pandemic started. My main challenge at the moment is fit. My body has changed as I’ve aged but I’ve always struggled with pants. I have quite a few mods to make every garment and they often conflict. Will try this process there by choosing one fit issue and perfecting it before moving on to the next issue + the first issue. Might be less crazy making than trying to get everything to work all at once! Blouse first, then skirt, then dress seems like a reasonable progression. Then shorts. Then pants. Thanks for this concept! Once I get a good consistent fit, I can think about adding skills. I already know a fair bit, but a wonky fit ruins the nicest finished garment!
Hello there! This video is very timely for me. 😊 I'm making a jacket over a sweatshirt and decided to sew my strips together, then cut the finished piece so the pattern comes together in the back in a chevron from shoulder to waist and in vertical stripes below the waist. Thank you!!! On a personal note, I've been following you for about 4 months and I find you to be an inspirational teacher and person. I'm praying for peace and strength for you. With warm regards, MarthaLee (in Virginia, USA)
As a beginner, I'm definitely accumulating skills and am making sure I've done a pattern a few times to make sure I'm comfortable with it (say neck/armhole facings) so that I have the confidence to take on the next pattern with zips and buttonholes (haven't done those yet). Next up will be learning how to match plaids, etc. It's fun and exciting to keep making progress.
Been watching and learning from you for almost a year now and you are an amazing teacher. In fact, you're so good that I took one look at that skirt and said YIKES! That is very complicated. It's a stunner and can't wait to see you model it.
I recently just started my sewing journey and your videos have been indispensable to me. I've learned almost everything from you and found that I have far more knowledge than most beginners and even intermediates. I just hope you know how much of an impact your videos have made to me, and so many others. I love this way of learning. You are amazing, Evelyn, and I know you’ll be back to your old self in no time. There are so many prayers being said for you.
Love the stripy skirt but i've got to say the green blouse you are wearing is SO gorgeous too!!! It looks like an incredibly gorgeous and comfy silk garmetn
That stripe matching skirt is a sight to behold!!! You take perfection next level ❤️🌟 I am sending up prayers every time I think of you, for your cells to fight like the best little soldiers they are🙏🏻❤️🩹 Sending you SO much love.
Evelyn, the striped skirt is amazing. Your sewing talents are way beyond my abilities. Partly because I'm a lazy sewer. You inspire me to do better. Keeping you in prayer. 💞
This skirt is so stunning Evelyn. No I had not thought about each step just being a skill. I need to start thinking in this manner more and doing as you suggested breaking each step down. I am excited to see this skirt on you. It just so very beautiful as you are . I pray this finds you doing well.
Evelyn, just want to tell you that you’ve been in my thoughts and I hope you are okay. Wishing you the best for your health and recovery. You are a gem! I’ve learned so much from you!
Hi. The skirt is amazing. Could i make it?. NOPE! Way beyond my capabilities. 😱. I hope you are keeping as well as can be. From average sewer Scotland . xx
Thanks for the lesson in skill building -- you've given me a new approach to sewing, i.e. break it down and start with the "easier" version to learn a new skill, and then move to the next skill -- that makes sense to me and others too.
The pattern matching is brilliant! I don't think I have the patients to even try that much matching! It's a stunning effect and the welt pockets are the chief kiss. I've not tried welt pockets and wouldn't with such a bold pattern but on something that wouldn't show minor problems. As long as the kids who asked me to make whatever needed them could justify it. I've found that I only ever leave my comfort zone for kids!
For a beginner like me every project still contains three or four new skills to learn. But some of them -- I did sew-in self-fabric interfacing on the skirt I'm working on these days -- are pretty easy. Others, like buttonholes, are more challenging. Still need more buttonhole practice before I can finish this skirt. But this was my third time using french seams and I think I've got them down now! Hope your treatment is going well, with the minimum of side effects ❤
That is a lovely garment, it's so finely put together. I do like the building idea - I seem to think that I need to start and just know everything - it's good to rearrange ideas to the understanding of building skills slowly.
I have been sewing for a long time, has it really been 50yrs…..Anyway So I can really appreciate the skill involved to make this. You did such a beautiful job. When I go thrifting I can’t buy something if the plaid or strips don’t match. It troubles me.😚
Ha ha ha! I am like you (sewing for nearly 50 years, as well): Unmatched stripes or plaids irk me. I made a test jacket of wide block plaid and it still annoys me that I did not take the time to align the sleeves (it is okay, though, at the time the waistline was too short for my torso).
welt pockets are fun and a great way to make the garments pop. Thanks for the video its great to see how to break things down. I hope you are well and I love that baseball jersey style shirt you're wearing in this one!!
OMG!🥰 I love the welted pockets! I just added welted pockets to my list of learned skills! I've also recently learned how to make my own block pattern. The more skills I learn, the more I love to sew!
I saw The Skirt and was just in our wow love it, I realized right away that is a lot of skill and it would work with my nautical theme… yet I probably won’t be making something like this for at least a good year or more as I am still on the opposite end I am the green I am beginning the newbiw.
Love the skirt. I am not creative enough to create something so cute. But I love watching others creations. Thank you. Hope you are doing well. From Ohio. 🇺🇸 USA
I have been sewing for years but I still like to watch your videos to brush up on something or find a better way of doing a component. Am i correct in thinking you made facing hem to counterect the bias construction? I haven't done much sewing with patterns cut on the bias.
I have been thinking of myself as an advanced beginner but you have made me realise how much I avoid pattern matching. Hate it! Definitely a gap in my skill set. Thank you for these videos. Love and prayers with you still Evelyn.
Your work is beyond beautiful & awesome. I would love to be able to sew something like this. I too use stay stitching to help me keep it all together. Right now I’m just keeping it simple but like Evelyn said just keep building on those skills. Prayers continue for you and a speedy recovery.

I've learned almost everything from you and found that I have far more knowledge than most beginners and even intermediates. I just hope you know how much of an impact your videos have made to me, and so many others. It's not just the wealth of knowledge you provide, but also your kind, patient, beautiful energy that I look forward to with each video. I hope you get well soon! 💙
Love love your red white stripes skirt, extremely beautiful designed it's perfect.
I love this way of learning. You are amazing, Evelyn, and I know you’ll be back to your old self in no time. There are so many prayers being said for you.
Such a great way of looking at a new project, thank you. 😊
I hope you are doing well, Ma'am. Sending good vibes your way.
Love the stripy skirt but i've got to say the green blouse you are wearing is SO gorgeous too!!! It looks like an incredibly gorgeous and comfy silk garmetn
Wishing you a smooth recovery and a return to good health.
Your videos are slowly convincing me to return to garment sewing. Thanks so much.👏
I’ve never thought about it that way before, but progression of skills makes perfect sense. Thank you Evelyn!
That stripe matching skirt is a sight to behold!!! You take perfection next level ❤️🌟 I am sending up prayers every time I think of you, for your cells to fight like the best little soldiers they are🙏🏻❤️🩹 Sending you SO much love.
What a perfect red skirt and the stripes connect and line up beautifully.
Evelyn, the striped skirt is amazing. Your sewing talents are way beyond my abilities. Partly because I'm a lazy sewer. You inspire me to do better. Keeping you in prayer. 💞
The encouragement and joy of the process you bring is beyond professional and delightful and people don't forget the mock ups
Love the welted pockets. Each time I learn a new skill I often work it in to an old project, giving the old garment a new life! Sending you 🤗
I’m getting back into garment sewing, and this advice is so helpful! Thank you! Hope you are doing well❤️❤️❤️.
This skirt is so stunning Evelyn. No I had not thought about each step just being a skill. I need to start thinking in this manner more and doing as you suggested breaking each step down. I am excited to see this skirt on you. It just so very beautiful as you are . I pray this finds you doing well.
Working on getting existing projects out of the way because im almost ready to take your classes. In my prayers sweet lady!
Evelyn, just want to tell you that you’ve been in my thoughts and I hope you are okay. Wishing you the best for your health and recovery. You are a gem! I’ve learned so much from you!
Excellent video teaching beginners a technical approach to garment sewing based on spiraled curriculum!
Such a great way to elevate a striped fabric, it looks fabulous
Great way to approach things, thanks
Thinking of you while you are going through treatment. I hope you are staying brave.
That is a lovely garment, it's so finely put together. I do like the building idea - I seem to think that I need to start and just know everything - it's good to rearrange ideas to the understanding of building skills slowly.
Gorgeous!
Thank you ❤ I agree that as a beginner it’s best to focus on skill building
What a great design 😯💞 !
Lol it made me more discouraged about the skills I lack. But I will keep trying! Sending you blessings for a full and total recovery.
Thinking of you. ❤️
OMG!🥰 I love the welted pockets! I just added welted pockets to my list of learned skills! I've also recently learned how to make my own block pattern. The more skills I learn, the more I love to sew!
This skirt is so stunning
Thanks. Your videos help break down the fear of even starting sewing because it seems so overwhelming. Off to watch the linked videos
@ Evelyn praying that this year you are better on your sickness I will pray 🙏🏼 that you come back ❤
I saw The Skirt and was just in our wow love it, I realized right away that is a lot of skill and it would work with my nautical theme… yet I probably won’t be making something like this for at least a good year or more as I am still on the opposite end I am the green I am beginning the newbiw.
that skirt is so impressive!!
The red skirt is to die for.
Love the skirt. I am not creative enough to create something so cute. But I love watching others creations. Thank you. Hope you are doing well. From Ohio. 🇺🇸 USA
I am sure if you take it steady you can create whatever you want!
Just in time thank you sweet heart💜💜💜
How are you doing Evelyn?,I think of you often and wish you a speedy recovery.
You ARE lovely! And so is your sewing. ;)
Great skirts.
