Assassin's Creed Mirage: The BEST AC Game In Years

  • Assassin's Creed Mirage has now been out for over a month and I've been working on putting this long video essay about it ever since I rolled credits. Assassin's Creed Mirage was a very special experience for me. I haven't enjoyed playing a new Assassin's Creed game as much as Mirage in a long time. It's by no means a perfect game as I highlight many of its flaws in this video but to me, it's certainly the best Assassin's Creed game in the last nine years...

      Nah I totally get that. They really do a good job of immersing people into the time periods. AC3 really got me into American history, and Mirage really inspired my interest in the middle east. These games do the same thing that those historical epics do, except you’re playing as a character rather than just watching a movie

      odyssey was so much better. it even got a GOTY nomination. you "og AC fans/ AC Purists" have absolutely no clue of what you are talking about when you say the last rpgs are not ac games. the AC lore is there, and there is so much lore in odyssey that you wouldn't know unless you actually played the games and paid attention to the details.

      @@armandoluiscaldas2858AC Odyssey is one of the best games I've ever played, and it's the best game in the series for many reasons to me, but it is a part of the RPG trilogy and fans of the older games wanted the old style back.

    I thought that the Nehal twist was absolutely phenomenal also from a psychologic perspective:
    Basim and Loki are the same person. But Basim doesn't consciously know about his past life. And since Character is largely shaped by experiences, he has developed his character as Basim growing up in Baghdad. But the subconscious memories of the experiences in his former life also shaped his character, and some of those traits are at odds with his personality as Basim, thus feeling alien to him. That's why it makes perfect sense that his mind would not accept them as part of his own personality but portray them as another person.

    • @alinpetrescu2309
      @alinpetrescu2309 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Yes, you get it. Basic could never be exactly like the old Loki, since Loki's memories (and therefore, Loki's character) were buried deep inside. That is where the conflict was, two different streams of memory in one mind, therefore two different characters in one single person; at least until Basim saw that he was truly alone, after discovering that Roshan lied to him, the Hidden Ones were just using him through their 'dogma', as Ali pointed out and Nehal was his only friend... So, at the end, he gave in, and became something else. Not Loki, since Loki never had Basim's memories before dying during the Toba Catastrophe 77000 years prior, but he was no longer just Basim either. Just like the merging animation at the end, Basim's and Loki's memory streams became one.

    That's what I don't understand, whenever I see or read something AC Mirage related are just negative reviews. But this game is basicaly what fans wanted, it's awesome and what is more unbelievable is that it's created from something so terrible like Valhalla. Devs just made a miracle.

    • @Syn741
      @Syn741 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ubisoft had the formula down. They just need to fine tune it. but decided to throw everything away for origin. No fan asked for origin, just like how no fan asked for mirage to be designed the way it was from origin's engine. fans wanted the old formula and feel of the game at least from syndicate. But what they did was try to replicate something from an RPG engine that no fan asked for. If fans asked for what mirage was, you will see more positive feedback. The fact that you have a lot of negative feedback just shows you that they didn't get what fans actually asked for. I feel a lot of new fans that recently got into AC (origin, Odyssey valhalla) are trying to discredit some people's actual feeling to the game by saying things like "But this game is basicaly what fans wanted", "All they want ubisoft to make is AC2 again and again" or even "They dont want ubisoft to experiment and grow at all".

    • @MIk3StoRm
      @MIk3StoRm 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Syn741 I feel like devs made it from what was left for them and you can see it for yourself when you play the game. So that's why Mirage is not a big step forward, they just did what they could. And I think they did it just amazing. I believe if they had more resources and game was planned as a stand alone title from the very begining, we would get a different game with more new mechanics and more polished engine. I couldn't imagine they make AC2 all over every year, game was phenomenal, but it's highly overrated. Mirage is a little miracle in this hot mess company named Ubisoft.

    • @Syn741
      @Syn741 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MIk3StoRm It was made from the mess they themselves created. Like I said, they had the formula down to the T. they just needed to improve in small areas. but the decided to go the RPG route. This restarted any progression and had made. Personally Origin was a super downgrade in terms of combat, and parkour mechanics. The AC2 over and over again is a brain dead excuse to discredit any unhappiness regarding mirage as literally no one asked for AC2 over and over again. Mirage was an upgrade to the downgrade that they themselves started with origin. So if they are going to use the AC name for the RPG games, the totality of the series should be considered, if the game was an improvement. Mirage is at the half way mark of where AC peaked. What makes an AC game an AC game is the parkour and the impactful combat. The combat in this game, personally it doesn't feel good, as it literally feels like every stealth kill is a 2 second movie being played. The parkour is an improvement from the previous 3 RPG game, but it is still nowhere near as smooth as when AC peaked.

    I've seen a lot of people call this game trash and cheap because it reuses old mechanics from Valhalla, and they are partly right. Ubisoft probably didn't give Bordeaux a big budget as they saw what happened with Valhalla and it's "return to roots" (aka using social blending that one time in the stealth tutorial), so naturally, the were a bit skeptical with the idea of a return to roots.
    But Bordeaux still did their best to deliver a good game and the certainly did. It's not much but this small game meant a lot. It showed that they understood the fans, it showed that they cared, and it proved there is still hope for a classic Assassin's Creed Game , that can be as good as the originals. It's the perfect blend between the original stealth based games and the new RPG based games, so there's a bit for everyone. Bordeaux, the Assassin's Creed Community can't thank you enough for what you did for this series.

    Nehal's twist hit me really hard not because I didn't knew it but because I found out at the end part of the game, before going do Alamut. I've played too much Cyberpunk and I've watched too much Mr.Robot to just not notice it but even noticing it was such a cool moment.

    To me, the Basim we see at the end is neither Loki nor the initial Basim. I feel as if it a new person born out the mix of both (in AC, we are repeatedly told that memories make the person, so it only makes sense to believe that the mixture of both Loki and Basim memories give birth to a whole new person that lives in between both characters)

    This game gave us something long forgotten, the feeling of being the apex predator, the blade in the shadows that everyone who knows of is afraid of. And THAT is what gives the pure Assassin experience.
    I will never forget the day I booted Origins and started playing, it felt so wrong that a small rattlesnake could require Bayek to use all his physical strength. You played as such a strong looking man, but in reality he was weaker than even common enemies, especially early on.
    Assassin's Creed was always about the feeling of that first trailer of the first game. This man who, through training and discipline, manages to become much more deadly than an army of soldiers simply by employing trickery and a stealthy approach and that is exactly what we got with Mirage.
    I'm playing it right now, barely halfway through the story, and I have not met an enemy that I could not stalk and murder in cold blood. No matter how well guarded an objective is, you have the ability to smoothly reach it just by thinking a little outside the box.

    Thank you for the video, I really enjoying it. Some reviews thought of Mirage as nostalgia bait, but I disagree. To be able to deliver their premise of "going back to the roots", Ubisoft Bordeaux needs to relearn classic AC games and taking what's the core of those games. That is a big challenge for them since fans are mostly knew more of what defines "classic AC" than even Ubisoft themself. Also, in my opinion, relearning something that has been absent for some years is more difficult than improving on what they've been making recently.

    I've been avoiding this game because I have been completely turned off from the modern-day main characters recently - I found that layla hassan was basically a "bad guy" but the writers didn't seem aware, and acted like how she treated people was fine and made people like her anyway, even when she was dismissing their opinions and needs, and putting them in danger unnecessarily... and then they replaced her with basim who is EVEN MORE OF A BAD GUY, and the writers STILL seem not to realise this, and have other characters just not notice or care how he devoted his life to punishing someone who did nothing wrong to him, just because they had the possibility of remembering the life of someone he hated... desmond was flawed, sure, but he was never cruel, and he seemed to actually care about people and be willing to hear their views and trust them to be better than him at things... and I don't know if the writers consider that kind of thing important. Maybe I should give mirage a shot, but I am tired of stories that glorify characters who are... bad, unkind, and often cruel people. You can have a bad guy as your main character, but only if your writers realise that's who they've written, and make the character face consiquences of their bad actions.

    Personally, I would rank Mirage 6th in my main game rankings, just behind the Desmond Miles Era. Being able to see a character train as an Assassin (or Hidden One), face struggles with the brotherhood, take down enemies for the betterment of the people, and have the peotaganist truly understand and follow the creed is something that has been missing from AC for a while, either in part or in whole, but Murage checks all of those boxes. In my opinion, that alone makes up for it's flaws tenfold.
    I just finished thr main story last night, and I absolutely loved playing this game from start to finish. Despite having knowledge of how the game would end and some character theories, the ending was amazing. The more simplified skill tree was a relief acter Valhalla, and the Investigation map that laid out five major targets and 12 total assassinations was a breath of fresh air compared to Odyssey and Valhalla. Both of these things were major points to keeping me wanting to continue playing the game.
    I really hope that Red can improve on what Mirage gave us. With 16th century Japanese Assassins, there will be a lot of hope for Red to continue the "return to the roots" that we got in Mirage, especially since this will be the first Assassin game since Syndicate, and within a century of the Ezio trilogy timeline.
    Here's to hoping we can more games like Mirage in the future, with the time and resources to make a top quality Assassin game in the modern gaming age.

    Mirage has problems but it succeeds in the one thing that always matters to me for an Assassin's Creed game, *the vibes.*
    It captures that perfect immersive feeling of being an assassin, a figure in the shadows of history carving a path towards the future. You feel like Spid- you're in Ancient Baghdad during the Early Middle Ages and you feel the mystery and legends surrounding you in this city as they start to engulf the life of Basim.

    I think the gadgets were solid but it definitely didn't do it better than Revelations. The amount of different bombs that you could make in Revelations is SO underrated and has yet to be done up to that level since then. Loved the video though btw! Also, I would be so down if you did a huge breakdown on AC Revelations. That game people seem to underrate as it is.

    I was pleasantly surprised with this game. It’s one of the best single-player experiences I’ve ever had. The vibes from this game are incredible. The atmosphere and gameplay are amazing. The only thing I didn’t like (however I do understand the inclusion of) was the stamina mechanic. It made the melee combat less fluid. I like the design of the character models and weapons. The finishers go so insanely hard.

    There are so many little things that make this game feel more immersive and actually makes you feel like an assassin. The bounty and witness system add so much more immersion and the AI is a lot better in general. Not great, but serviceable. There are more visible hand and footholds and you can’t just climb any surface. There are actual assassination missions where we have to do investigations and then plan out our attack. There are different hidden passages and multiple ways to create distractions or sneak past guards. The replay value is actually really high. The combat is still janky and double assassinations and the assassination animations in general can be very janky. Baghdad is definitely the star of the show and it’s great to be back on the Middle East for AC.

    The tailing missions in Black Flag were some of the worst and were called to be removed not because fundamentally they were terrible, but because Black Flag had one of the worst worlds in which to parkour around meaning you had to walk on ground level for most of them very slowly, and they had a circle you had to stay inside of or you would be desynchronised. Tailing missions are fun on the other hand when you're stalking from rooftops without a punishing eavesdrop range limit.
