The sad truth is, in 2007 they offered him to be in charge of their monster movies but her turned it down. He's gone on to say that he deeply regrets doing that.
Phils Mendoza I don't like how he claims superheroes aren't like this. Sure, not all of them, but not none of them. Batman is the biggest and most famous broken character.
whitenight jr. Maybe have van helsing be an opposing force to Russell Crowes Jekyll cause like it's said you don't know if Dr Jekyll is really good so maybe have Van helsing as a human who knows this and is trying to rebel agaist Jekylls organisation
whitenight jr. Van Helsing was in the original Dracula. Either way he really should be. From not seeing the film it appears Jekyl wants to contain and study the monsters while Van Helsing could be another team/organization sent out to destroy them and rid them of the world.
He's coming back. Unfortunately, while there were scripts written by good writers, (they writer Doctor Strange, Arrival, and other stuff), the latest is known for Wrath of the Titans. So not a lot of confidence there. Also, The Mummy's writer also wrote Batman and Robin. Needless to say, I'm conserned.
whitenight jr. I mean sure, he was in the original 1931 Dracula, but he was an old man in that so it would have to be a younger more badass van helsing.
"we can't change these characters, they have to stay true to what they are originally" Literally changes the mummy from a man to a woman. Nothing wrong the villian being a female but howay, sounding like a hypocrite there haha
David Tay it does actually, changes the characters choices, decisions, meaning of the character, the backstory of the character will have to change as a result of this big change. He makes a big deal of keeping the character the same but this is a big change, wether it's good or bad, we shall see.
Well, the mummy was never a really emotional, or "grey" villain. It was basically a zombie. I agree that they should make a point of keeping the characters as close to the original as possible, but with the mummy, I think they should focus on giving it an actual character first.
Actually, I think this video may have spoiled The Mummy. The rest of this video they talk about adding monsters and people becoming monsters. I think Tom Cruise's character will destroy the old mummy, but in turn gets her powers and becomes a new mummy himself.
Householder Films You can't horrors don't work anymore the old's are way better but now horrors are a bit scary but boring, better off with thriller and action tbh
PsychoTici Both Dracula Untold and 2017's The Mummy were intended to be horror films but just turned out to be action films, and both flopped horribly at the box office. These films are meant to be HORROR, not anything else; let them be true to their 30s horror roots.
I can't wait to see vampires done right after so much teen drama and the last adaptation of wolf man was ok but I think we will be getting a better version soon.
I feel universal should have giving guillermo del toro the bride He has spend years trying to get it made his visual style and his love for the original would have been perfect.
Kitty Lord It really doesn't bode well when someone heavily involved with the project can't seem to get the basic facts right. Could just be a slip of the tongue, but who knows.
A big misconception is that he monster's name was Frankenstein. In the book, which the movie was based on, the monster had no name and was just referred to as the monster or him or it and only becomes known as Frankenstein because it kills the doctor in the beginning. Frankenstein was actually the doctor that created the monster and survives most of the book.
There's so much promise here, and I'm glad he's in charge. Loved 'The Mummy' (it was even lit and colored in a grey blue that evoked black and white!) and can't wait to see 'Bride of Frankenstein' in 2019! These are Horror Adventure films, more than action and it's about damn time!
Ben Hardy I hope they really take a look at the leroux novel because the only leroux faithful movie is the 1925 movie and I'd like to see it renewed for an audience who don't know it
Many of the elements and fundamentals that define the classic Universal horror movies are NOT in the recent Mummy movie (it spends too much time building a universe than building fright, emotion and tension), which strangely contradicts everything Kurtzman has talked about in this clip.
It wasn't supposed to be apart of the universe, but then universal got the idea for it, so they shot that post-credits scene with Dracula and the master vampire in the modern world. Unfortunately, it only did okay at te box office and the reviews were awful, so they scrapped it and started with The Mummy instead. I feel bad for Luke Evans because he was pretty good in the role, but the movie wasn't good, so I don't feel to bad. Also, apparently Dracula will still be involved in the universe in some way.
The Universal Monsters were not the first shared universe. The studio had a bunch of character properties and character actors under multi-year contracts. It was easy to make the monsters meet up in a movie. Heck, their sound stages and make up facilities were probably in walking distance from each other.
The problem with Russell Crowe in the Mummy is that you're not supposed to introduce Cruise into this world yet. You're supposed to focus on making us love the current story individually first, then you bring everything already introduced into the mix in the teamups and only sooner if it's already been a few films. The reason why Iron Man worked so well to bring that character into the MCU is that that film is fantastic on its own. It's not until later that the audience is even introduced to the idea of a teamup, making it that much more meaningful, impactful and shocking. That film would have been almost (if not completely) ruined if they tried to introduce him to others as blatantly and obviously that soon as they did with the Mummy. Your heart was in the right place, but you have no idea how to properly do this.
Wait wait wait wait... So, he calls Jekyll the Nick Fury of the Dark Universe, he references Marvel when talking about a shared universe (BTW, crossovers and collaborations are not the same as a shared UNiverse, so yeah, you are kinda taking a cue from Marvel), and then when asked about POst Credit scenes, he goes, "NO NO NO, that's Marvel's domain. We don't want to emulate them." Much contradiction! Much!
All these new movie universes... because of Marvel EDIT : Universal started it first from the 30s to the early 50s with the Universal Monsters of Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man
I would love to see this type of thing done with the World Of Darkness books. Their version of Vampires, Werewolves and the stories behind them and other monsters are amazing.
This was really good I always had a soft spot for the Universal Monsters. Just tell me soon sir who will play the Wolfman,Creature for the black lagoon and Dracula.
Michael Fassbender in talks to play Dracula. Angelina Jolie in talks to play The Bride of Frankenstein. Jennifer Lawrence is in talks to play the female in opposite Johnny Depp in the Invisible Man. I really hope they bring Luke Evans back as Dracula though.
Let's not forget that when they were first talking about a Creature From The Black Lagoon movie they were looking to get Scarlett Johansen as the woman the Creature falls for.
Just a few points, the monsters in the 30s and 40s were not played by movie stars - they became movie stars because of their performance. This is why Lugosi, was typecast and Karloff had a very varied career as he was by far the better actor. If you going to up-date, for example Frankenstein, the creature cannot have a flat top head and you would have to explain why bolts in his neck in the 21st Century. Decide whether you are remaking or up-dating. The other reason why these films still work is because of the Gothic atmosphere they created while the humour evolved from the story. The Mummy was a Tom Cruise film when it should have been about the Mummy. Gothic Horrors are basically morality tales and stories that have more meaning that most films these days can put in one scene. I want a Dark Universe, it could be what cinema needs but go back to the Gothic tradition.
The Mummy is the first installment, the bride of Frankenstein is in pre production, creature of the black lagoon, invisible man, Van Helsing and Wolfman are all in development rn
I am all for homages to the original. However, at least try something different with the monsters designs. Try to find a balance between having a look that is classic yet modern at the same time.
because changing something just for the sake of change is among the worst things you can do for an iconic character(s). in this situation change isn't good. also, what do you mean "make it fresh"?
This is going to be great, I was brought up with these films on TV, good idea making them big budget films as this is going to get the younger generation back into this genre of film and the classic books
What made the original monster movies was that they were about the monsters and the dichotomy that they presented. They raised the question of what it was to be human. They showed us that although the humans called them monsters, the humans acted more like monsters themselves. These new monster movies are just about hoping that spectacle and big name actors pulling in viewers. I'd love it if this whole monster-verse worked out, but I just can't see it happening.
I have a feeling; many years from now, all the monsters will come together in one movie. Some of the monsters want to be left alone, while other monsters want to escape the darkness and enter the world of man.
Mr. Kurtzman as a lifelong fan of universal studios horror classics i wonder will the fans like myself will ever finally see the color version of the monster of the 1931 film of Frankenstein with iconic horror legend Boris Karloff? the movie poster on TH-cam is shown in color is a reflection of Boris Karloff,s screen test that was done by make up artist extraordinaire Jack Pierce. maybe it,s about time for universal studios to consider releasing a new color version of their b&w horror classics to be shown in theaters for a new generation of fans bringing new life into the Universal Dark Universe. please suggest it to them and thanks!
End-credit scenes are not owned by Marvel. Studios need to stop being afraid of doing scenes at the end of movies. People love post-credits scenes. They're fun.
God....if only we got that Bride of Frankenstein movie. It couldve saved the Universe. The way David Koep described the movie sounded amazing. And Javier Bardem as the Monster sounded perfect to me

For the record "God's and Monsters" was not a biopic it was historical fiction, the story revolves around the real life director James Whale befriending a fictional character (played by Brendan Fraser) during the days leading up to his suicide .
I kinda feel like maybe they should start with Van Helsing. Have 3 film trilogy that introduces Dracula (Big Bad), Frankenstein, and Wolfman. Then do a team up movie adding in The Creature from The Black Lagoon, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Mummy. Maybe do period pieces for the original trilogy then move to modern day after that.
Marvel Cinematic Universe DC Cinematic Universe Godzilla Monster Versus Cinematic Universe Dark Universal Cinematic Universe Disney Cinematic Universe Stephen King Cinematic Universe M. Night Shyamalan Cinematic Universe Marv Studio Cinematic Universe Man this is all so cool, I'm loving these Cinematic Universe movies !!
Poor Kurtzman, he just wanted the monsters of the 30's to be reborn to our new age, wanting to recreate the feel of the old films. Now, "The Mummy" had flopped and some people are somewhat disappointed and some people are angry! Heck, I thought the film was O.K., but the best thing in this movie is Dr. Jekyll! I hope the Dark Universe doesn't fail like DC did because they had a rocky start as well!
Great ideas for shared universes: Dean koontz universe Stephen king universe H.p lovecraft universe Clive barker universe Edgar Allen Poe universe Image comics cinematic universe. I have never seen universal monsters but I want to.
I just saw the mummy and I didn't think it was horrible, it was decent and the action was good and yes it was a little rough but it's a start they don't know where they are going with this universe yet. I hope they don't cancel the universe, I would watch all of them. Bring them on, make them better, I'll enjoy
Who's playing Abbott and Costello is what I want to know... 😂 Actually, I love the classic 30s horrors. It's weird everyone says that gothic horror stuff isn't good for now and yet millions still watch them every year. And have done for 80 years. You can't make these monsters scary in the modern world really, so why not focus on making the monsters 3d characters. This is actually what the best early universal movies did even though the trailers suggested otherwise. Karloff was so HUMAN as the monster and as the mummy - that's what made him so wonderful in those movies, in my opinion.
Marvel was hardly the first to do post-credits scenes... sure they made it a regular thing and made it a teaser for next film, but other movies would often do a little cliffhanger (especially horror movies, showing the bad guy/monster is still alive)
If the rest of the Dark Universe movies are action/comedy like The Mummy was, this universe will not succeed. Try to make horror movies genuine horror, please.
The dark universe should not create much of a background for the monster because the only reason that people get scared is because they don´t know the history of a monster, as a result they don´t know how far the monster will go. When no one knows the history of the monster they start to fear it because they have not seen it or heard about it. For example when I watched Stephen King's IT, I feared it because I didn't know much about it so I didn know what to expect that the monster was going to go, even though that the movie showed that Pennywise has been in the same town for a couple of centuries I still had no idea about how the creature came to Earth, why it came to earth, and if he came with more alien spiders. So as a result it scared me.
Only one person can help you bring forth the horror in these films... Guillermo del Toro.
Or Jason Blum.
what about alan moore as a writer or neil gaiman
of course
The sad truth is, in 2007 they offered him to be in charge of their monster movies but her turned it down.
He's gone on to say that he deeply regrets doing that.
Only?
We got the MCU, DCEU, Monster Verse from Godzilla, and now Dark Universe
EL RUBEN NATION I honestly love how they are making more movie universes
Don't forget the Stephen Kingverse
No-Scope Gamer that's a thing!?
TheJ4KE yea with IT and the Dark Tower
and M night shamalan's own superhero universe (unbreakable, split)
Know what shared universe I would love to see if it was done right? ... A Cthulhu mythos shared universe.
Jacob Flores only with a badass eldritch protagonist .
Crazy discoverer tropes bore me
Jacob Flores That would be great indeed. It is, however, very difficult to achieve because of the nature of Lovecraftian, cosmic horror.
That would be pretty cool
it's sad that this universe didn't take off, there was so much potential with bringing these characters back into today
I really hope this franchise becomes successful because I love damaged "gray" characters at the center of stories
Phils Mendoza I don't like how he claims superheroes aren't like this. Sure, not all of them, but not none of them. Batman is the biggest and most famous broken character.
With Jason Blum spearheading The Dark Universe, I believe that it will be a success.
Bring Van Helsing in I would like to see him in there. I know he is not an original movie but, he would be a cool addition.
whitenight jr. Maybe have van helsing be an opposing force to Russell Crowes Jekyll cause like it's said you don't know if Dr Jekyll is really good so maybe have Van helsing as a human who knows this and is trying to rebel agaist Jekylls organisation

They should have kept Dracula Untold as part of it
Nick You're joking right
Nick if it was better received.
they're going to make Dracula a woman now...
source?
MrBananaDonkey Still got better reviews than The Mummy (2017). The movie had some flaws but it still could have worked.
Dark Universe - whole lot of action, lot less horror.
Jake Hunter totally agree, make it horror

@@Frredster looks like Jason Blum will be taking over.
I'm looking forward to this - I'm a big horror fan so it'll be nice to see all the classic monsters in big budget movies again.
I wonder if Tom Cruise will become the mummy at the end of the movie
Datflyguye 212 that would be a good way to bring the male mummy into this universe
Hopefuly not. Sofia looks great as the character, and should be in the future movies of this franchise.
Datflyguye 212 well he does lol
Tion Hudaya what do u mean?
I can't wait to see vampires done right after so much teen drama and the last adaptation of wolf man was ok but I think we will be getting a better version soon.

lol
Subhadeep Dey "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Mummy" 😂
Such originality
I feel universal should have giving guillermo del toro the bride

Is Dr. Jekyll supposed to be Jekyll and Hyde? I'm loving this official shared monster universe/ dark universe.
That boy Frankenstein was smoking on that loud at the end
AM a huge classic horror lover.... and I approve of this.
Monster! Frankenstein's *Monster!*
not simply Frankenstein
Kitty Lord It really doesn't bode well when someone heavily involved with the project can't seem to get the basic facts right. Could just be a slip of the tongue, but who knows.

Eddie Lee WRONG!!! It was known as “the creature”.
I have to agree. this is a money grabbing Universe. They should be made as Horror Films, not action films.
Kurtzman has a horrible track record. This franchise is D.O.A.
You wish.
Ukaran Just saw the movie. Not a strong start, even if Sofia is cool (just not used well).
You called it!
The Dark Universe is being revamped.
Wow you were right
There's so much promise here, and I'm glad he's in charge. Loved 'The Mummy' (it was even lit and colored in a grey blue that evoked black and white!) and can't wait to see 'Bride of Frankenstein' in 2019! These are Horror Adventure films, more than action and it's about damn time!

Ben Hardy I hope they really take a look at the leroux novel because the only leroux faithful movie is the 1925 movie and I'd like to see it renewed for an audience who don't know it
It's confirmed that they are bringing The Phantom of the Opera and the Hunchback of Notre Dame into the Dark Universe.
I can't wait for a new creature from the black lagoon film. I love those three films.
Many of the elements and fundamentals that define the classic Universal horror movies are NOT in the recent Mummy movie (it spends too much time building a universe than building fright, emotion and tension), which strangely contradicts everything Kurtzman has talked about in this clip.

So will this all be leading to a remake of Monster Squad?
this is one of the best ign vids ive seen in a while. i think you guys should stop overposting short undercooked videos and make more vids liek this

Let's not forget that when they were first talking about a Creature From The Black Lagoon movie they were looking to get Scarlett Johansen as the woman the Creature falls for.
That interview did more to interest me in seeing the new mummy than any of the trailers I've seen for it.
the vampire skull in the jar isn't Dracula, it should be one of his wives. Her capture and death could be done in two flashbacks.
Mic Mac that would be a really good way of setting up the back story without boring the audience with a long monologue
It's Dracula. The eye socket alinements and forehead wideness is a male skull

why though? why change something that works?
To make it fresh. Everyone knows what the universal monsters look like, so why not change them a little bit to make them fit in with modern times.
because changing something just for the sake of change is among the worst things you can do for an iconic character(s). in this situation change isn't good. also, what do you mean "make it fresh"?
lavafoxx Leave it to the directors and hope they keep it classic. We don't need a monster texting their victims on a iphone before they kill them.
honestly, that is all i can hope for. that and sending a few letters to the directors, producers and shareholders.
This is going to be great, I was brought up with these films on TV, good idea making them big budget films as this is going to get the younger generation back into this genre of film and the classic books
What made the original monster movies was that they were about the monsters and the dichotomy that they presented. They raised the question of what it was to be human. Interesting to see how well the mummy does and if people are interested in yet another shared universe even if this is a bit different
This Universe has immense potential
I really hope the next movie saves this universe because The Mummy was extremely questionable lol
will their be a TV series set in that Shan universe?
I have a feeling; many years from now, all the monsters will come together in one movie. Some of the monsters want to be left alone, while other monsters want to escape the darkness and enter the world of man.
Frankenstein from van helsing is my favorite design

of the monster of the 1931 film of Frankenstein with iconic horror legend Boris Karloff?
the movie poster on TH-cam is shown in color is a reflection of Boris Karloff,s screen test that was done by make up artist extraordinaire Jack Pierce.
maybe it,s about time for universal studios to consider releasing a new color version of their b&w horror classics to be shown in theaters
for a new generation of fans bringing new life into the Universal Dark Universe. please suggest it to them and thanks!

I can’t wait for D.U to come out with these movies...loved the books
Great ideas for shared universes:
Dean koontz universe
Stephen king universe
H.p lovecraft universe
Clive barker universe
Edgar Allen Poe universe
Image comics cinematic universe.
I have never seen universal monsters but I want to.
"We shouldn't change the monsters"
*Makes Princess Ahmanet the Mummy instead of Imhotep*
is "Dracula Untold" part of this Dark Unirverse?
This is exciting for these characters. I really hope they're done well.
they are doing a reboot on both van helsing and dracula so does that mean both dracula are different or same or just inject them in one movie.
I just saw the mummy and I didn't think it was horrible, it was decent and the action was good and yes it was a little rough but it's a start they don't know where they are going with this universe yet. I hope they don't cancel the universe, I would watch all of them. Bring them on, make them better, I'll enjoy
Please start it up again I really want this universe to come to life
Universal still owns the rights to psycho right????!?!!?! REMAKE PSYCHO
It would be nice if this lead up to an league of extraordinary gentlemen reboot
Who's playing Abbott and Costello is what I want to know... 😂
Actually, I love the classic 30s horrors.
All those saying these movies should be scary: The scariest scenes in Frankenstein were the humans reaction to a monster.
Kurtzman keeps calling the monster by the name of Frankenstein. Good luck with him heading the dark universe.
Finally agent Ethan Hunt get an ACTUAL mission impossible
So are the monster's good?
Or what's with them all teaming up??
World destruction?
Marvel was hardly the first to do post-credits scenes... sure they made it a regular thing and made it a teaser for next film, but other movies would often do a little cliffhanger (especially horror movies, showing the bad guy/monster is still alive)
I would watch this if it was more thought out ....but I would be more excited for a Justice League Dark spinoff (movies or show)
people read the reviews for the mummy. it's doing pretty good
lol not anymore
I don't believe deniro had bolts in his neck when he did the roll. and he was fantastic
I'm a simple man, I see shared universe, I click.
that is exactly what I said the universal monster movies were the first to do cross overs.
Kind of bummed I didn't see the Mummy now. It seems like a nice alternative to the super hero craze.
am gonna watch this movie
