I was 18, starting my first day working in a record shop off Carnaby Street, London. The shop manager asked what kind of music I liked. I told him the Motown and Stax record labels primarily, with some Beatles, Beach Boys and Rolling Stones thrown in, just about covered it. To which he replied, " In that case, prepare to get musically educated..." and played this album loud over the shop speakers... 😀

i really don't know when i first heard this, but the first time i heard it live i was in my early 20s, and Santana opened the concert, and Stills came out and jammed with him during some of the solos. a friend of a friend was walking through the crowd handing out acid for free. another time another friend and i used to ride in his yellow VW bug, which had no stereo at all, but the glove compartment was filled with hand-written lyrics to this track and others, which we used to sing in the car. so many good memories here. thanks for doing this.

It's worth giving the entire album a listen. It was a major album of the era that has had a lot of longevity. I first heard it much later than its release when it was still getting air play. Going back today - years later - I still feel it captures the mood of the 60's (ok it was released in '70 but recorded in '69). Yeah its a little trippy. That's the hippy vibe.

"rejoice, rejoice -- we have no choice -- we've got to carry on ... "
even after listening to this for 30+ years, or maybe because of listening to it for so long, it keeps hitting me deeper every year.
when the world grinds you down, carry on. when the world slaps you around, carry on. rejoice --
man, it's good to see you out in the world again my dude. your attention to detail and your exuberant yet chill positivity are always a balm for the ears & spirit.
driving in to work today i was jamming Bootsy Collins and Ronkat Spearman, so i was delighted when you pointed out the connection to funk here in this track. now i realize there's funk all over this, but it took you saying the obvious to turn me on all over again.
as a minor psychonaut i'm always drawn to CSN/CSNY tunes like "Cathedral", but these guys have a catalog so deep and wide it's hard to miss. "Southern Cross," "Wooden Ships," "Ohio", and their version of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" are all folk-rock jams. harmonies are what they're known for, and their messages hit home.
carry on, brother. so very good to see you. and come on back when you can. peace.

Great reaction but, as a musician, I have to correct one term. The drums in the song are "congas", not "bongos". Bongos are the small two-drums attached together ones that you hold between your legs. Congas are much larger and are individual drums held up by stands. There may be two or three of them sometimes grouped together but they are not connected to each other like bongos are. It's an easy mistake because they are both played with the hands but they are very different in size.

Listen to CSN 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.
    It's awesome.
    '...needs more cowbell!!!'
Stephen Stills on guitar...he's from louisiana...Neil Young on guitar...he's from Canada.
They all were part of the magic coming out of Laurel Canyon in the late 60s early 70s.
Some lived there some just showed up & even John Lennon hung out up there. Charles Manson was trying to get into the music thing too & the guy who rented the house Sharon Tate & Roman Polanski rented after he left had actually recorded a couple songs for Manson. One of the beach boys- Dennis Wilson i think- had brought Manson around.
The guy had a studio at the place, too.
So the killing of 4 ppl there may have been a case of wrong guy but wth let's do it anyway.
The John Holmes thing happened in laurel canyon, too...where about 4 ppl got killed bc John Holmes had more dick than he did brains.
Joni Mitchell still owns the house she lived in, there.
Led Zeppelin has great stuff but wouldn't know which to recommend...'when the levee breaks' is excellent...zep they loved old blues...English band...nobody'll ever come anywhere near Zeppelin.
