It was Crosby Stills & Nash when they recorded their 1st LP. Neil Young joined the band just before they played at Woodstock. You didn’t see him in the movie, because Neil refused to be filmed. CSN is awesome and known for harmonies and the silky voice and excellent strumming of Stephen Stills. Add in Neil Young's songs, his rock edge and distinctive voice, and the inspired guitar back and forth with Stills, and awesome gets more awesome. Neil Young came and went from the group - he'd show up and stay as long as he could stand it then leave again - he's more of a lone wolf musically.
This was played at every party! I sang every harmony role, knew this album so well. .. it was a creative, stoned era lol AND NO Autotune/oranything. Yes, a rollercoaster!
They added Neil Young after their first record because Stills played all of the instruments on it and he told Crosby and Nash that they couldn't play well enough to tour it. He suggested Neil Young because they played together in Buffalo Springfield and really jammed off each other on guitar.

CSNY was the first concert I ever saw. First hour was acoustic with a lot of 3 and 4 part harmony. After intermission it was electric, with Stills and Young’s dueling guitars built upon a solid drum/bass rhythm, Crosby’s rhythm guitar, and Nash’s organ, highlighted by their 4 part harmony. Still probably the best concert I ever saw. In the late 60s Crosby was in the Byrds, Nash was in the Hollies, Stills and Young were in Buffalo Springfield. David, Graham and Steven met at Mama Cass’s house in Laurel Canyon and they knew instantly their combined voices was something special. CSN made many records and toured for decades. Good music. Neil brought the “ooomph” and then their music soared!

I highly recommended getting this album on vinyl. When the harmonies hit at 0:56 it's like wrapping yourself in a blanket in a cold room or the first sip of hot coffee in the morning
Ned from Spain again with a bit of info for you guys. About the 4 main guys, David Crosby was in the Byrds, Stills and Young were in Buffalo Springfield and Nash was in the UK hit makers The Hollies. They were all superb musicians but Nash was the harmony master. The rhythm section was the great but underappreciated Dallas Taylor on drums and a very young Greg Reeves on bass. This was a highly influential album and sold 7,000,000 units in the US alone. Compare the harmony work with groups like Yes, Kansas, Boston, America and Queen. Thanks guys this album has a lot of treasures for you to discover.
I'd offer the Grateful Dead's Americana pair ("Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty") as also being among the best harmonies of the day. Tracing the melody line in "Uncle John's Band" has always been a mystery to me.
CSNY are among the gods of Rock n' Roll and Folk Rock.....sen them them twice in concert!!! AWESOME!!!! Very very hard to harmonize....these guys pioneered that!!!
They helped with some of the Grateful Dead's harmonies on their album "American Beauty" and Jerry played pedal steel on the song "Teach Your Children". A different time in music culture...
This song is from the album Deja Vu which is one of my favourite albums of all time. An amazing album. Neil Young grew up in my hometown of Winnipeg, Canada Cheers
Stephen Stills wrote the song, played guitars, organ, bass guitar. Dallas Taylor on drums and Nash and Crosby harmony vocals. Crosby and Nash came into the studio to find that Stills had put together the music through the night. All they had to do was sing on it.
Crosby, Stills, and Nash added Neil Young for touring because Stephen Stills played so many different parts and instruments on the records and Young showed up with so many new songs they couldn't ignore them.
Great song! More CSN&Y please, try Almost Cut My Hair, another all time classic tune. These guys were dope, their 70s albums are worth checking out. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎸🎶
'Crosby, Stills & Nash' was the first tape I bought after my dad installed the 8-track player in my 1968 sunshine yellow Toyota Corona! It was the first car that I bought with my own money, which I'd earned working as an operator for Pacific Telephone☎
I still remember the joy 15-year-old me had in buying this LP and listening for the first time! Just a bit of history: CSNY was the successor to the group called Buffalo Springfield, which Steve Stills and Neil Young were part of. Buffalo Springfield's last album had a song on it called Questions, which was resurrected here as the second half of this song.
The second half of this song is adapted from a Buffalo Springfield song called "Questions" which was written by Stephen Stills. Of course, Neil Young was also part of Buffalo Springfield.
Stills and Young started in Buffalo Springfield for what it is worth. Young became a star. Check out Cortez the Killer, Like a Hurricane for the guitar playing, and a boat load of other songs that cross genres.
This song opens the album Deja Vu. Written by Stephen Stills, this song contains two distinct sections bridged with the proclamation, "Carry On, love is coming, love is coming to us all." The second part of the song is taken from "Questions," a song Stills wrote for his band Buffalo Springfield that appeared on their 1968 album "Last Time Around" .
When you look up at The Mt. Rushmore of harmonizing you can see CSN& sometimes Y up there. Legends amongst legends with both Neil and Stephen playing incredibly on their guitars! You guys need to listen to the whole Deja Vu album in its entirety all at one time. It will blow your mind. Look for Almost Cut My Hair and Neil’s Country Girl which are 2 of my favorite tunes!
This particular song is my go to when I’m feeling spiky. The vocals just smooth out all the bad feelings and then I fall into all the instrumentation and changes in the music.. by the end I’m just all blissed out and grooving along. Love it ❤
They are all so talented. The Neil Young rabbit hole is 20+ masterpiece songs in his catalog. He is for me one of the most important musicians who has ever lived of any genre.
A GREAT song by a GREA group. They recorded so many great songs you should listen to them all. Your ears will thank you. I’m sorry I missed them at Woodstock but, duty called (the Navy).
I always loved them with or without Young. The ultimate hippies' group. Carry On changes melody twice. Listen to CSN's "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", song has four melodies. "Our House", song written for Joni Mitchell. Another song by CSNY "Woodstock", a cover written by Joni Mitchell.
You can usually tell when Young is playing with them because the rock songs actually rock. I can't remember if you've done Woodstock or not, but his blistering lead guitar is what makes that song really go. And he was pissed because they had a harder, more rough edged take than the one they released that he liked better. That was a constant source of conflict among them...Neil wanted everything raw, ragged and emotional. The others wanted to polish everything to a pristine sheen.
Neil Young was in and out of the band over the years. Crosby, Stills and Nash broke up multiple times as well. Graham Nash and David Crosby did a duet thing off and on here and there. This song is phenomenal, as is a lot of their songs are and they can harmonies are off the charts.
As mentioned by many the Deja Vu album is amazing. Listened to it basically my whole life and yes it stands the test of time. My Canadian heart swells with pride as Neil Young who ive seen probably more than any other artist stands h&s above the rest. I know there will be others who strongly disagree and they have every right to do so. But i stand my ground in saying his discography stands for itself!

Amazing album. Amazing artists, trailblazers in Rock. I'd recommend "Woodstock", "Almost Cut My Hair" and "Wooden Ships" next, their first two CSN(Y) albums ... every track is great.
Post war, pre-childhood dream's. Picking up the pieces with love and regaining peace. A tumultuous time that brought about so many artistic creations. Thanks guys.
One of the promotional late sixties supergroups. Stills and Young coming from Buffalo Springfield, Crosby from The Byrds, and Nash from The Hollies. I agree, it was their harmonies which made them legendary.
Thank you gentlemen. I agree with you in that the CSN&Y harmonies are special. Please give a listen to a lesser known song “Got It Made”. It was recorded 18 years after “Carry On” but but because of either the technology or experience and maturity, it has even smoother harmonies. Again, thanks and keep doing what you’re doing!
I saw CS&N and Neil young several times...only never together. The closest I got time wise was (July 9,1983) sitting in pavilion at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin watching Neil Young and few days later(July 12, 1983) watching CS&N sitting on the side of the stage at Wembley Arena in London. So there was an ocean separating those shows.😄That London show was part of prize package won in a contest run by Atlantic Records/CS&N Allies Tour and Westwood One Radio. Afterwards backstage had an interaction with Jimmy Page which I will wager was unique enough to have never happened before or since.
Was listening to one of my favorites this morning and it came to mind that you guys might love it, an instrumental by fusion band Weather Report: "Birdland" - it's total mood lift. Everyone in the band is pretty amazing.
The "Questions" part of this song (the second half) was its own song from the Buffalo Springfield days. Stills added it to the beginning part to make one song from two.
You know that one girl you were with and lost that was the love of your life at the time.. this is that song. Thanks so much for doing this one.. Dang I still miss her
This song is a CSN&Y/Buffalo Springfield mash-up. The second half of this song is called Questions and it appeared on the Buffalo Springfield's 3rd and final album Last Time Around (July 1968). Stephen Stills wrote both halves of the song. The Buffalo Springfield is arguably one of the most, if not The most, influential bands of the 1960's for this genre of folk-rock Southern California sound. From The Buffalo Springfield's demise came: Crosby Stills Nash and sometimes Young Poco Loggins and Messina
My mom visited her younger brother for a weekend and she came home with this album. I was 11 and I can’t count the many times I listened to it in full. The entire album is great. Enjoy!
Crosby, Stills and Nash (and sometimes Young) created a lot of fantastic songs, but I have to say, I feel like this is one of their masterpieces. Written by Stephen Stills, it’s unlike any other song I’ve ever heard. Another one you should definitely check out by them is Almost Cut My Haur, which was written by David Crosby. It’s killer.
Buffalo Springfield gave birth to this brilliant band .Neil young left the band went solo for a minute then formed Crazy Horse..Young is recognized as being the father of the Grunge music genre.
Had this album on in High School art class almost daily…it was a mainstay. Great harmonies, really a tune of the times! You guys are very open minded…and as usual, spot on! Kudos!
Note that this is actually a combination of two songs by Stephen Stills. The second half, after the instrumental break, incorporates an updated version of an earlier song, "Questions," that he had already done with Buffalo Springfield. Here it is: th-cam.com/video/1BCJwGYlcso/w-d-xo.html
I honed my harmonizing skills using bluegrass music, then perfected them with CSNY. The sole reason I was offered a spot with some bands. If someone needs to practice those skills, this bands material is an awesome place to start.
"Carry On" is, arguably, the very best folk rock song of all time. It was the first track on the "Deja Vu" album, which my future wife and I listened to many times while lying together in bed. There are so many really good songs on that album. I highly recommend people giving it a listen.

Giants…vocally, instrumentally, song writing, arranging, producing. Great live too together or separately.
One of the best "Twofer" songs in rock--The first part is sublime, the second part is groovetastic. Che was blissin' out--as one should to this, ha!
Cowgirl in the Sand (2009 Remaster) · Neil Young. will headphones a rock'n !! Good job my friends,Rock on!!
They would be a great rabbit hole to go down
You know that one girl you were with and lost that was the love of your life at the time.. this is that song.
From The Buffalo Springfield's demise came:
Crosby Stills Nash and sometimes Young
Poco
Loggins and Messina
Rockin with them from an 8 track in high school. ❤ em!
Rock on ✌️
My mom visited her younger brother for a weekend and she came home with this album.
They were Crosby, Stills, and Nash on the first album. They added Neil Young for this album.
Their first album (CSN) & their Deja Vu album (CSNY) are both worth a look.
This whole album is worth a listen. So good.
Buffalo Springfield gave birth to this brilliant band .Neil young left the band went solo for a minute then formed Crazy Horse..Young is recognized as being the father of the Grunge music genre.
They were my very first concert, my older brother took me and my older sister, first time i ever seen a joint lol im 62yr old now
You guys are quickly becoming the best of the reactor’s..keep it coming
Had this album on in High School art class almost daily…it was a mainstay. Great harmonies, really a tune of the times! You guys are very open minded…and as usual, spot on! Kudos!
❤❤Love is coming!❤❤
I get that ol hippie feeling whenever I hear this song.
Thanks guys. 💋💋💋💋
I think you guys are my favorite reactors now, love your play lists
I honed my harmonizing skills using bluegrass music, then perfected them with CSNY. The sole reason I was offered a spot with some bands. If someone needs to practice those skills, this bands material is an awesome place to start.
"Carry On" is, arguably, the very best folk rock song of all time. It was the first track on the "Deja Vu" album, which my future wife and I listened to many times while lying together in bed. There are so many really good songs on that album. I highly recommend people giving it a listen.
CSN(Y) really was the ultimate Hippie band. You'd be hard pressed to find better vocal harmonies anywhere.
