The larger problem isn't in the prisons and the culture they facilitate, but rather the politicians who allow unjust/unconstitutional laws to be passed and the law enforcement leadership for allowing non-violent offenders to go to the same prison as psychopaths. Politicians who take lobbying money should truly be arrested for corruption, if not tried for treason.
Evil people suffer from massive inferiority complexes. When they get sent to jail they can not accept the fact they have been defeated. So they get more desperate to prove that they are superior so they escalate to violence because they need to do something NOW. Then they get their sentences increased which pisses them off more so they become murderous and are then placed on death row for being too severely mentally ill to be allowed to live.

The fact that Meg is treated so appallingly by her family who sees her as literally non existent, they finally got everything they deserved. Seth's hot take (as Brian) on the penal system isn't entirely off the mark, per se. The larger problem isn't in the prisons and the culture they facilitate, but rather the politicians who allow unjust/unconstitutional laws to be passed and the law enforcement leadership for allowing non-violent offenders to go to the same prison as psychopaths. Politicians who take lobbying money should truly be arrested for corruption, if not tried for treason.
Evil people suffer from massive inferiority complexes. When they get sent to jail they can not accept the fact they have been defeated.
So they get more desperate to prove that they are superior so they escalate to violence because they need to do something NOW.
Then they get their sentences increased which pisses them off more so they become murderous and are then placed on death row for being too severely mentally ill to be allowed to live.

The reasons people do crime are so varied and ridiculous that categorizing criminals under the same branch is as dehumanizing as the categories people suffer as convicts.
Tell me, what’s the similarly between having a period, having a brain tumor, eating too much junk food, and raking anabolic steroids? They are all used as defenses in court trials for murder cases. They might be bullshit, but they also might be a look into a more complicated motive structure other than bad people are bad.
As for the last point, if you don’t get tough in prison, you’re better off dead than dealing with the bullshit you’ll succumb to every day. It’s a vicious cycle of systemic pressure, not a will of a defeated ego.

What Brian says is accurate, generally speaking, my young clients who get sent to prison as punishment , when released, are 1000% worse they are returned to society.
That's what happens when you have a privatised prison system. The wealthy companies that manage them lobby the government to pass unjust laws. Ensuring people end up in jail for offences that should merit fines or community service at worst.
