There is something both funny and unsettling about how the first time we encounter the zombies, they’re just chilling on the stairs, and just turn and silently lunge for the dude. Like no noise from them, no music stinger to jumpscare you. It’s very different from usual so this was cool
I just watched this (it's free on Tubi) and while I knew that was coming the fact they were completely *silent* was incredibly disturbing. It's one of the most effective zombie reveals I've ever seen in a movie.

@@conkghey2511 Yeah, it's really clever. When designing zombies one of the hardest decisions is figuring out what noise you want them to make, and then this movie comes along and just asks "What if they didn't make *any* noise?"
The silence makes em a bit more unsettling, really digs into the oppressing loneliness
It honestly puts you into the realism, you pretty much feel and hear everything happening in the movie, kinda like you're there, no cheesy music, no random sounds that are somehow bring made from a corpse, just complete silence.
Not making vocal noises is actually pretty smart. Zombies lungs probably wouldn’t work right. They don’t breathe so not making noises makes sense to me.
That's why I like zombies in this movie. It makes the zombies more deadly and kinda realistic since these zombies strictly work on stimulation and instinct and it would be stupid for zombies to snarl like and growl like an animal.
Wouldn't zombies need to breathe for their brain to work?

Given how other people survived zombies in this movie, Sam is an idiotic genius. He makes loud noises (stupid), he collects rain water (smart), he didn’t start preparations when the zombie outbreak started (stupid), he does target practice and exercises in his free time (smart).
He sounds… realistic. Most people generally do a mix of reasonable and irrational (or mistaken) things.

Making noise is a double edged sword. You can find out where the infected are, but if you can find them, they can definitely find you.

I love how the zombies don't make noise in this movie. Realistically, wouldn't their vocal capabilities be rotted away?
Also, zombies making zero noise aside from their footsteps is terrifying.
They don't have functional lungs, hence no breathing, hence no air passing through the vocal cords thus not making any sound/noises. This movie gets a pass on getting ambushed by zombies but these things still make noise with running.
Realistically none of what they do would be possible at all, so why not vocal sounds?

Looking back, I think he might have had a legitimate reason for cleaning. It's possible that he did it thinking the virus could be transmitted through surface contact. And so, he cleaned in the hopes he wouldnt end up turning from such a simple mistake as to ignore the possibility that his flat was just a filthy, viral hotspot.
Edit: OK nvm, this man just left two corpses to rot in his apartment and thought, "This is fine..."
If it could be transmitted through contact why clean without a shirt?
@@needstoast Well, if the virus worked like this it would still have to enter your body, so it wouldn't matter if he had a shirt on or not. You'd clean surfaces so you wouldn't accidently get the virus by touching something contaminated and then touch your mouth, nose, eyes, nose or an open wound.
Something to further the original idea. He might been scared of being infected by rubbing his eyes.
I believe the cleaning might have been the defense mechanism of sublimination - a way to avoid dwelling on the current moment by working.
@@stillhere4165 And by making obvious signs of the situation disappear. A lot of victims of (r word) have a reflex to scrub themselves as efficiently as they can. It's "useless", counterproductive for their case, but a profoundly natural reflex to cope and deal with the feeling of inner disgust. They want to "wash away" what they just lived. We also have better instincts with fluids than we do with bodies when it comes to cleanliness. As a social species, and pretty uniquely applying to humans, we have shit sense of smell and disease so as to care for our wounded/sick, but are programmed to react to fluids as something to avoid.
For the ending, I figured that's why they had several moments when the zombies were pounding on the doors. It was a lead up to the doors finally wearing down and breaking.
As a hypothetical, if you slam yourself against a door once, not even overtly hard, every day, that door will break faster than the door next to it that was opened normally.
The break-in happened because he messed up and trusted the doors to always hold, even after wearing them down by leading the zombies to him.
I really liked that this movie was a solo point of view and how he hallucinated the girl. honestly this was my favorite recent zombie style movie I've seen since 28 weeks later

The cat shooting was pretty disturbing.. but when I first saw the movie it gave me the feeling that he realized that the cat was standing next to the zombie because it was its owner who have turned.. so it gives like a sad realization to it.. also I think the fire alarm rings because he burns all the tapes in the bathtub,, love your videos btw, glad you are back and healthy

I think the reason he shot the cat was because it seemed to be licking the blood off the person's leg, suggesting the cat may be potentially infected

Huh, I always he thought he shot the cat because it wouldn't come to him. He tried luring it with tuna and it ran off. He was lonely and angry, and I think he took it out on the cat.

Even though it’s hardly lucky to live in a time when the zombie apocalypse occurs, that guy is still the luckiest person on the planet. I’m a deep sleeper and can sleep through a lot of loud noises but I would have definitely been woken up by the sounds of screaming and death literally everywhere, cars likely crashing outsides, alarms going off, someone maybe using weapons, and also someone likely trying to get into the room I’m in. Sam risking everything just to try and get that cat was so infuriating.
That all said, loved the film. Wish that there was an english version of the book which was published in french I believe.
1:20. Also that plan was so dumb. Why didn’t he just check to see if it was clear (which it clearly was since he could run over with no zombie being attracted to him) and then run over with the rest? Instead he does the worst thing possible and honk the horn. It was as if he was trying to get himself and his family killed. Maybe it’s realistic in that there would probably be people who would screw up this way but damn. It always annoys me the same way it annoyed me how much of a risk Sam takes just to get that cat.

@@30cal23 But imagine if there were gun shots but also ear piercing screams from everywhere, loud growls, people banging on doors, windows smashing, screaming for help, people being torn apart and cars crashing into buildings and people or just beeping their horns. The guy is lucky to be alive.
1) I believe he had a minor concussion: his head was knocked into the wall by a person colliding into him, then his nose started bleeding and he felt a sudden urge to sleep. If this were the case, it might make more sense he slept through it all.
Speaking from experience, people really underestimate how easy it is to get a small concussion.
2) As for someone attempting to enter the room: a door just outside where he slept was shown to be rattling ominously. This insinuates the zombie incursion may have come from *inside* the party rather than outside. If this were true, no one would have tried to enter his room because they were fleeing the opposite direction.
3) I understand the cat part being infuriating. Then again, 40 straight days of solitary confinement and existential dread can really...disfigure a man's psyche

Having the zombies silent and only hearing the slight cracking and breaking of rigor mortis is not just a clever way of making the zombies stealthy, but also unsettling. Part of what made the zombies from Kingdom and All of Us are Dead so unsettling was because of how their bodies contorted and you heard their joints breaking and cracking.
Alright im fine with fast running zombies alright, but silent fast running zombies?? Now thats where i draw the line. Might aswell give up than live life being scared of a zombie ambushing you in your sleep

But offcourse, don't do that first, unless you have a bunch of kids with you.
I think the cleaning was a sublimination defense mechanism in response to- well, the stress of a zombie apocalypse.
In 28 days later the zombies weren't outside was because it was day and the zombies were sensitive to light. That's why they were hiding in the tunnel in the scenes where the car stuck there
I actually get why he's cleaning the floor, and it's actually a smart idea in a film that focuses on the psychological aspect of the zombie apocalypse. In a world gone mad where you have absolutely no control over anything and are probably suffering from a certain amount of shock, that little cleanup job was something he could do and control, and therefore serves as 'grounding' himself mentally. Smart move, in my opinion.
I once read a review for a comic about a man drifting alone on his ship in space. The main character knows he's doomed but continues his little routines as if he wasn't. A quote from the review said something like "If we don't keep the little things that make us human then it's easier to throw it away."
I think this reflects that perfectly.
The night eats the world is one of my favourite films because it actually displays how one person might deal with the stress of the apocalypse as well as the mental toll it would take to seclude yourself for so long. Especially with the sheer amount of death and suffering that surrounds you.
Honestly say what you will about this movie. I always enjoy the idea that we can somehow domesticate zombies if we keep them caged and interact with them enough like they were people. It may have been done before but the way it was done here has stuck with me for a while.
Shaun of the Dead kinda ends like that
I think it's more the equivalent of a wild animal becoming familiar with his presence/scent.
So I don't think it's necessarily the zombie regaining its humanity, but more it being used to Sam and building an association that "Sam =/= food".

I think he shot the cat out of spite because he felt like it led him out into danger with no payoff. One thing about this movie that could help rationalize a lot of the main character's later actions in the movie is that he's going nuts.
Surprised no sin was added for Sam burning cassette tapes in a bath tub, causing the fire alarm and putting him in danger.

For Alfred not attacking Sam, i think it was a buildup about zombies not attacking when being blinded. I do think Alfred was blind before turning. And the thing that introduces us to the blinded mechanic was with the scene with the zombie having a sheet on his head, stoping his attack, and Sam realized it. If you consider that zombies have a little less eyesight than humans, it's pretty fine to me.
That's a good theory and makes a bit more sense than Sam was nice to him so Alfred considers him a friend theory i was going with.
3:27 I think I’d grab something to use as a weapon and make sure the apartment is really clear. Would be bad if a zombie wakes up from the noise I’m making and bites me from behind...
After that I’d fortify my position and start making better weapons while letting the tub run full. No point in searching for food if I’m eaten first...
Other then Shooting the Cat I'm genuinely interested in watching this movie now. Zombies that don't make noise outside of their Rigor Mortis sounds Terrifying
Rigor Mortis doesn't last long. If the muscles are moved in any way, then it goes from Rigor Mortis to Pallor Mortis. So, even the cracking of muscles and joints would be inaudible after a while.
I enjoyed this film, thought the silent zombies were an interesting new idea. Like you said he did some good survival ideas but not enough. If a zombie apocalypse happened the 1st thing I'd do is knock out the stairs to my place then knock out a wall in my attic into my neighbours and use that as my entrance.

if it was the case that the alternative was to leave the cat to be torn apart by zombies, it’d be different but it’s clear that animals seem to be ignored by zombies and so he really just killed a cat for no reason.

@@raeebner1482 I don't think it would have starved. The cat would likely have gone off to hunt something, like a mouse or a rat or a small bird if it could. I'd imagine a city during zombie apocalype is a paradise for rodents and cats or animals in general who no longer have to fear humans. Anyone who has had a cat bring back a dead bird or mouse home will know that a cat would likely do just fine finding prey on its own. The cat in the film didn't look like it was starving either.
When it came to this film, the cat was moving around without being harassed and disturbed by the zombies. Similar to how in Dawn of the Dead, a dog was able to walk through an entire horde without being instantly attacked.
These zombies seem to only attack humans and ignore animals or the zombies just find hunting humans more satisfying and easier than hunting animals, and so they just don't bother with animals. The cat was even sitting right at the feet of one zombie as it would do with a human. Clearly the cat isn't afraid of it likely because it hasn't been given reasons to be afraid.

Clearly after such a long time, there were no zombie animals roaming the streets which would have already shown up if the zombie virus could be transferred to animals.

He probably could have walked out of the city within the first 40 days if he wasn't making any sound for that long all the zombies would be well gone from that area and he could walk the streets and collect supplies from shops
watched so many zombie movies but this one really did a damn good work scaring and making me depressed.
Cleaning the house isn’t a bad idea. It could’ve potential decrease the chance of being infected, especially since he doesn’t know of all of the ways it could spread. Bit the cleaning should’ve been done after doing everything else.
It’s a movie where the zombies aren’t the main antagonist. I LOVE it!!!
while watching this I thought to myself sleeping w quite zombies around would be so hard what if they broke in in the middle of the night and attacked while you’re asleep… and then it happens in the movie, though it was just a nightmare but still. I think I’d be having that same nightmare every night.

The opening of this movie was the first instance since I was a little kid where a movie actually fucking scared me. Him opening the door, seeing something that looks kinda odd but isn't immediately obviously danger, saying something because he's confused just like us, and their IMMEDIATE instinctual response of jumping up and lunging at the source of the noise. I had to stop and take a 5 minute break before I could continue watching the movie because it was legitimately, truly, deeply, horrifying. 10/10
it was rlly fucked up, for me that was a rlly great introduction to the zombies, they didn't make any noises, they just went straigh to him, his response was also rlly good, immediatly closing the door afterwards
@@jinbe_of_the_sea4577 exactly! It really captured the essence of how the early part of a zombie outbreak would go down. It would spread so rapidly because no one would know to even be cautious. People would see that something is off, but by the time most people understood that they were in danger it would be too late. I go back and rewatch this scene every now and then and it still takes my breath away a little bit

regarding the rain part in france, it depends during summer mainly, we can have shit summer with rain all the season or having huge heat waves that last a bit long with little to no rain, but during the rest of the year you can easily get a shit ton of rain water, its really common, even in winter, it rarely is snowing and even though, still could melt it down for more water! especially around Paris
i only realise this until your sins video... the reason the zombies finally got in after the fire alarm went off was because he must have never checked to see how she got in the building... and because she rushed up there to go see him due to wanting someone else to talk too she mustn't have been paying attention to the front door closing improperly and so when the alarm went off they banging opened the way...

This is a really good review but I would like to say that I think the zombies didn't break through the front door when he was banging the drum cuz they were going after the drum from the balcony and not from the building itself but the fire alarm was loud enough to resonate throughout the building causing them to try and get through the door

This movie finally addresses an issue I have had with zombie media for years. Zombies don't breathe so they wouldn't make moaning sounds. Big plus from me

I find it funny that most people think they can get food and water after a disaster its like yeah start building you ark when it starts raining instead of before
I usually don’t like the ‘one and only’ loner-type lead stories, but this is one of the very few exceptions. Him desperately trying to save the cat, and THE twist in this movie, says a lot on his mental state being by himself in a fallen world. The way the zombies don’t make any audible sounds is creepy, yet an amazing concept. I REALLY hope to see more of it in all zombie media tbh.

If I can suggest a movie, I highly recommend you watch this movie called I Am A Hero; it’s a very different kind of zombie/infected movie (they call them ZGN in the movie). It’s a Japanese horror movie and I just really enjoy it.

I think the reason the broke the door when the fire alarm went off is because they couldnt see what was making the noise, whenever he made noise the zombies can see him and try grabbing at him, because the fire alarm is throughout the whole building the broke in.
I wasn't expecting him ta shoot the cat either but I did laugh my ass off, more of a dog guy.
