My thoughts on Scott pilgrim takes off is that I genuinely can’t imagine being upset that we got something entirely new from the franchise rather than just another retread of the same story(and yes, before you go off on me saying you wanted a straightforward adaptation of book, let me just say I wanted that as well, but I accept the fact that Bryan Lee o malley wanted to do something different)the bait and switch really did make for a pretty great unexpected surprise.
I was upset for the first few weeks because I was expecting the original story to become mainstream. But the story really ignores a lot of the shit the movie originally also ignored. Like where's Lisa my man? Scott just doesn't get a job? And ignores subspace?
I know get it. It is its own thing. But originally I was super upset at not getting a proper adaptation

Plus live action can't give the same vibes as the comic. So an anime adaptation would be great. It was also weird how takes off pretended to be an adaptation from the advertisements, but it wasn't.
That said, I still loved every single second of the anime

watching Lucas and Gideon have a bros day at Julie's crib after shit went left for both of them immediately made those characters some of the most likable personalities. building out these people when their entire organization was based off of the equivalent of a twitter stan base is exactly why an hour and a half film was not capable of giving the potential character building credit.
That was a wonderful moment. I think so many people who are filled with anger and toxicity could be helped by just hanging out with someone for a day having carefree fun. It helps so much mentally.

I remember just sitting with my mouth open laying on my bed while watching as coins appeared where scott was. I had to force myself to go to sleep and not binge the entire 8 episodes as the show made me adore the exes, knives, stephen, young neil, and *especially* ramona on a deeper level while keeping me guessing about what the hell happened to scott. It was a masterful bait and switch and I enjoyed it way more than what I thought I wanted.

Tbh one evil ex I disliked more than the original was Roxy, specifically because they completely omitted the part where Ramona basically treated her like an experiment or a "phase". It's honestly a more interesting conversation to have than "you ran away" because Gideon already had that in the original. Talking about Ramona just kind of treating her queerness like sidequest would have been an interesting topic because it was present in the original and I would have really liked to have seen that expanded by Ramona either learning to respect Roxy instead of acting like she was "just a phase", as if it wasn't a real relationship with a person who has real emotions, or her coming to terms with her own queerness.
not that I disagree that it would've been interesting, being bi was probably only a phase for Ramona in the movie considering she makes out with Roxie in the comics while dating Scott

You can tell by the way her and Roxy talk while getting coffee that it's very unlikely anything actually happened, there is no undertone of Ramona wanting to hook up with Roxy. I don't doubt Ramona could be queer which is why I added that she could come to terms with her own queerness as an alternative. Either way, she does very much talk about Roxy like she was a phase in the comics too. That's not movie exclusive.
In the mix of Sci-fi, action, time travel, super powers, etc. the most unrealistic part of Scott pilgrim is Ramona still having hair at 60 years old

I was one of the people who assumed we were getting another adaptation of the comics when the anime was announced, and being a big fan of the movie (I've only read 2 of the books so far 😔) I was super excited to just be getting anything Scott Pilgrim. Naturally I was really surprised by the way the first ep ended, but it was when Roxie's episode hit that I knew the show was gonna be special. Her fight with Ramona was spectacular, and I absolutely loved how they showed their relationship as something that did matter to the both of them. I'm not even queer myself (that I know of), but I could tell that Bryan Lee O'Malley was trying to handle that part of the OG material with more care and nuance than his younger self and that's really commendable. That episode, especially Ramona's apology to Roxie "subverted my expectations" if you will, and I'm so happy this show exists if for that episode alone

Probobly the best edited and presented Scott Pilgrim review. Comparing it to the Eva rebuilds in depth was well needed. As well as comparing the comics I’m so happy more people are reading them now cause of this show. Also love the Gurren Lagann eye catches love seeing my favorite anime mentioned as well as Jet Set radio music
As someone who never consumed any scott Pilgrim media before this show, it was onw of those rare cases where spoilers made me wanna watch MORE than before

I have to say that I've always loved the editing style of your videos, I feels like the video is moving pretty fast without ending to soon.
Honestly, I was surprised about Takes Off ending up as a Rebuild type story, but I'm happy that it was because it pairs so well with its origins and it explores the world just like you said. The original being a character study about Scott and Ramona being both just utter messes, but steadily growing and fixing themselves for each other because they share a significant amount of the same flaws is dope, but you're right that the others don't end up getting focus. I think most of the side cast, excluding the Exes, are besides Knives mostly pretty much healthy, so the focus is less on their growth because they're kinda periphery to the core conflict, and the Exes (for the most part, sorry Matthew) are clearly shown as victims of Ramona's faults while also being kinda messed up themselves, so we can see how they could grow after this and also inherently get development for Ramona from their fights. It's cool, and I really appreciate the comic for exploring how Scott's selfishness literally sucks his focus away from the people in his life.
And then Takes Off happens, and it's in dialogue with the comic by exploring what happens without Scott; most people move on but end up changing for lack of his presence and for the gain of Ramona and the Exes in the cast broadening the whole cast and ending up bringing them together. And we focus on Ramona having to deal with the Exes herself because she can't rely on Scott to fight them for her and thus give her an excuse to keep running from her issues. His disappearance impacts her because it cuts off the usual route she'd been using to run while facing her with dire enough consequences that she can't just ignore the situation, and so we see her interact with everyone and form a friendship as a bit of an outsider with them all. The huge change to context and the wake-up call Ramona is hit with essentially forces the original story's centralizing framing device off of the story diagetically, and it's a phenomenal decision for a change like this. It's a fantastic way to reflect on aspects of the original while rebuilding them in an entirely different direction to tell a vastly different story that still manages to hit a lot of the same stylistic notes; the cool, stylized action and fights, the incredibly expressive characters and comedy, and the strong balance of drama and levity are all there, but presented in a much different way that allows those elements to feel fresh despite being what many people would've tuned into a more classical remake of the series for. It's what everyone would've wanted from an animated reboot of Scott Pilgrim, while being entirely its own, equally well-composed story.
My only gripes with it are kinda the stuff with Gideon and the stuff with Old Scott. With Gideon, his context in the series feels less like it was recontextualized from the comic and more like it was just fully replaced, which in the new context makes sense because he was kind of the evil foil to Ramona and Scott and the only Ex who was actually like, evil, but it does mean that where everyone else felt like they got more focus because the context was shifted, he felt more like he was just an entirely different dude. Which doesn't change that his actual arc in the show is dope, but it feels less in dialogue with the comic because of that compared to the other Exes. And with Old Scott, it feels kinda cheap to me to just sell short the comics ending by having them fall back on the exact same failures they suffered from before, despite their growth being about confronting those failures and choosing to stay together even if it'd require growth. It was hardly a dealbreaker nor did it in any way diminish the overall phenomenal work that Takes Off was, but it just feels kinda dissatisfying to undermine the original ending in my eyes, even if the overall story being told is still phenomenal.
The comparison between the Evangelion rebuild and this show is brilliant! Many people dislike this adaptation for what it isn’t, a direct adaptation. But you pretty much explained all the good that came out of it. You managed to explain all my personal thoughts and feelings about it perfectly. Additionally I love your narration, visuals, and overall structure of the video. I love the edit you made at the end, it just tied the whole video together so perfectly. This is the first piece of content i’ve seen from you and i will be subscribing to see more!

One of my favorite things from Scott takes off is Even Older Scott as a reflection of Scott's worst traits, I think he does a way better job than Nega Scott every could because it's literally him... In the future

Yeah I'm not too sure about that Nega Scott forces him to hold himself accountable for all the shitty things he does. We SEE the development he undergoes as a result. We never really see Scott grow or develop in the show, he just looks at Future Scott and says, "Yeah I don't wanna be like that". We never get any scenes that show that he understands WHY Future Scott is the way that he is. It also doesn't help that the show doesn't make it clear that Future Scoot ISN'T comic Scott, so as viewers we're even more confused as to why Scott has seemingly forgotten all his character development from the comic

i''m really glad youi made this video because i have also been calling this the rebuild of scott pilgrim. it''s funny because the comic and film went through a very similar production process to Akira where in which both were being made at the same time with the comicc being about midway tthrough aand thus each influenced the path of the other in various ways but the parallels to Eva you mentioned are very spot on, both massively shifted pop culture and gained rabid fan bases quickly and while critics and fans loved it the creators had things they wish they couldve done better or changed entirely and did it to such a point they fuirther enriched their work. seriously great video

6 minutes in and man I'm with you. I get this vibe like originally Scott was just a rebound for Ramona the same way Knives is for him, but the movie doesn't really follow through with that. I watched the deleted scenes, and the version of it where him and Knives end up together reads as if Ramona is way more distant and unimpressed with Scott. I really wanted in the movie for him getting with neither of them and taking some time to work on himself (but I guess that's some how too healthy)
As much as I'd like having a 1-to-1 adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim comics, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is so nice to have. It's new content from a series that ended 10 years ago even if it does retcon a few things. I also love seeing the Evil Exes be just as dorky as the main cast.
Honestly, my least favorite thing about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is that Even Older Scott didn't pull off a Raging Demon with his Akuma looking ass.

This show is going on a special shelf in my brain right next to FLCL.
My absolute favorite thing about Takes Off is the new perspective on all these other characters. It's a more mature and healthy take on their dynamics bc it's meant to be a retrospective piece. Bryan Lee O'Malley said in an interview that the original Scott Pilgrim was a story for 20-somethings (hence why he was writing it in his 20's and finished it before he hit 30). Takes Off is a story for the 30-somethings, and thats why it puts more focus on healthy character growth and responsibility instead of bombastic action and a weird incel hooking up with a manic pixie dream girl (we still stan the comics and movie tho no shade).

I thought we were getting another retread of Scott Pilgrim that was going to be more fleshed out than the limited time frame the movie had. I would have been fine with that and loved that, too, but damn, I wouldn't have known how much I would have been missing out on.
Takes off is a great show. I do wonder if it does a disservice to Scott's character purely by the fact that he may not have learnt the lessons from the book by not going through those events but, maybe seeing how his not being there allowed for those around him to grow and improve could be a catalyst for that change. That the great thing about the ending of the book and this show its open ended enough leave potential for good and bad to happen to these characters. It's not perfect but it is very well done.
I love shonens and power fantasies. I was pleasantly surprised with the twist of the show. I got something new, and fell in love with the characters MORE than I thought I ever could. Felt like I was watching a slice of life with a hint of mystery and action. Felt like you lived in their world, not just experiencing a specific character's perspective and story

only a small problem with the whole "the old future versions of the characters are the same ones from the comics, implying that the present version we see in the show wouldve been the same ones from the comics as well", is that we do not see anything about gideon literally kidnapping his past exgfs like he has done in the conics bruhhh, i dont think that they wouldve given him that whole arc they did in the show to gideon, if it was the same comic gideon that did that shit, completely unaddressed
to be honest, this anime was the first piece of scott pilgrim media I consumed, and I am so glad this was it. I initially assumed it was either an extension to the original story or an alternate retelling that goes the same **general** route, but takes a lot of liberties. I did not expect them to just completely change the entirety of the timeline for this adaptation, but boy am i glad they did that. i love this anime.
