@integrity I'm talking about artists who accidentally color a darker skin color, a bit lighter or "ashy" with no ill intent. Fact is pale skin and darker skin need different colors to work with said skin tone. Pale skin works well with light pink while darker skin works well with darker shades of red and brown. However I've seen artists post work of their poc and people going ballistic because they used a too pale/gray brown and people calling them racist because of it. It sucks because it just discourages them from drawing more POC fanart, especially when the POC community love representation.

Asian anime characters who are the product of a completely different animation industry that's already predominantly Asian being exported over to a country and media landscape where big round eyes and pale skin are already considered hallmarks of whiteness are fair game imo. The idea that Black edits of anime characters "take away representation" from Asian people or something falls kind of flat because fully realized Japanese characters in anime don't represent a struggle to be seen and respected like Japanese characters in American cartoons do.

As a poc I personally never saw an issue with changing the race of a fictional character as long as
    1. It isn’t done out of spite or to harm people
    2. It isn’t forced onto others constantly and told as ‘right’ ‘the only way’
    3. It isn’t claimed to be ‘canonical’ ‘accurate’ or ‘fixed’

When it comes to the (official) changing of a race of a fictional character, I think so long as the race or ethnicity had nothing to do with the story I really don’t think it matters what they change the race to if at all. Yes, asian countries obviously can have people of different races living in it. And ofc not all anime characters are asians. but to say racebending anime characters isn’t erasing asian features because most anime characters don’t look asian?? What race do they look like then?? what is with this double standard?? “They have whacky colored hair, how can they be asian???” It’s anime, a cartoon, character features are exaggerated ffs. People never give asian characters any respect or take them seriously and I’m sick of it.

    • @Space_Burrito
      @Space_Burrito 2 ปีที่แล้ว +173

The thing is, anime characters are racially ambiguous. The reason White people are able to easily imprint/identify with them is because they don't look Asian. You can't erase "Asian features" Because anime characters don't have them. A lot of anime with a distinct foreigner have blonde hair and blue eyes in order to show the difference. Knowing the characters are Asian mostly comes down to outside knowledge of knowing who made it and the nation the story takes place in. Stuff that generally doesn't come up in most shows. Most people would agree that race bending a character like Mikasa for AoT would be wrong since being Asian is one of her character traits.

And I’m only bashing on those certain ppl, let’s make that clear. asians feel like a mere backdrop sometimes when it comes to racial issues in the US. oh you guys deal with racial issues? but you have kpop and anime! whoop-deedoo.

Especially when the Pandemic brought more hate crimes towards Asians. And due to the "Model minority" Myth Asians are in a weird position where they aren't seen as minorities, or white. Hispanics are somewhat dealing with a similar situation. Though not as pronounced. But at least the situation for them and other PoC seems to be getting better if only a little bit.
Though I'd bar Anime and K-pop from this kinda discussion since they're not American rep and primarily racially homogeneous.

      @chickensandwich8828 2 ปีที่แล้ว +64

Also I used kpop and anime as an example just because they are so popular in American media, and a lot of people tend to forget that they are made by countries with a homogeneous, racial population like you said. A lot of Americans will look at kpop and anime thinking “why do Asians get so much rep!?” not realizing that they come from entirely different countries. Like it’s not anyone’s fault that asian entertainment became so prevalent. If we’re solely looking at American-made media, Asians have as much representation as black people, maybe even less.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the movie, but I'm Puerto Rican. The game put a lot of emphasis on that part of Miles' life in the game versus the movie, even has him speaking a bit of Spanish to his mother. I couldn't stop smiling, my face hurt so bad! The feeling is crazy and amazing! The game also gets a thumbs up from me cuz there's a quest where you interact with a deaf girl and they use sign language! PWD representation matters too! So y'all got something to say about it? Talk to minority first. Ask questions, try to understand. And if that sounds stupid to you, then we're probably going to be at odds. Really? You were that happy just because she spoke spanish? The language that's not even hours and given to us by our original oppressors?
As someone who's a Latino as well, half Mexican half Puerto rican, I don't care about relationship.
I just want good stories and good characters. Besides, I don't expect people halfway across the country who've never met a Latino before to do a popular representation of latinos. And how would at least don't care about you, that little smile was enough to get you to still go into the theaters or streaming services and give them money, you just felt for me. The way I see all you did was fall for bait.
You basically show them they only have to do the bear bear minimum and that is it. They don't really have to do much to make you happy and you've proven that. Many people have proven that.
And don't get me wrong, that movie was f****** awesome., But just one scene of a guy speaking a different language, that's not even hours to begin with, doesn't really make me happy.
in fact I can care less and even now I still don't understand what the big deal was representation is. I mean I understand why it makes so many people happy. Relatability. I get that. I get relatability. But I rather be related to by my personality before my race.
In fact I am almost feeling embarrassed to even refer to as a Puerto Rican given how f****** brainwashed our people are and still want the item to be part of America as a full-grown State knowing how this country treats the Island and our people. And although the Spanish do not have anything to do what's going on over there in Puerto rico, and I do not hold the sins of the past on the children of today. That is not fair.
But nothing still boils my blood then when I hear an older woman say why don't you speak our language, and I just so badly want to tell them why don't you? Why don't you speak our language? Why are you speaking the language of our oppressors and trying to say it's our language? Why are you praying to the God and the religion of our oppressors?
As far as I'm concerned we can never get actual representation. Cuz what's left of our culture is gone.
What we have now is a merge of what we had left and what was left over by the Spaniards and any of the slaves and other people who came over to the island.
The most representation I've ever seen this up story about a Hood family of Puerto Ricans that didn't like black people. And when I hear s*** like that it blows my f****** mind.
Even more so when I hear people say stupid s*** they want to be pure blood and Puerto rican. There is no such m************ thing. We are literally the most mixed ethnic group in the whole f****** world. We are even bigger melting pot in the US given that most of the people that are actually melted together and become One race of people.
Or like my grandmother who constantly uses the Edward hard r even though she constantly refers to herself as a Puerto Rican black woman. F****** dumbass.
My grandmother not you. I mean I love my grandmother don't get me wrong. But it goes to show how f****** ignorant they are and trust me I have no problem calling it out to their face.
Also as not only a latino, but an autistic pansexual. I don't ever ever ever ever ever ever expect somebody to do proper representation about me. You know why, cuz nobody gives the f*** that I exist.
So if they don't even know I exist, and there's nothing important about them to be fit into their lives, they don't have a reason to understand the Latino culture then why would I ever expect representation? Unless it would fit their story.
I'm not against that, but for me that's the only time it would make sense. If an anime studios decided to represent Latino search for the sake of representation I would just ask, why? And say oh god. Cuz I've seen the past black representations. And, well he already showed us how racist they looked in the video. So I honestly don't give a f*** about being represented by a foreign studio that has never exited their studio, let alone their city, let alone their country.
I'm honestly with the people who say why not do it yourself? Only because in my expectations I don't expect them to do it right or to do the bare bare minimum like I mentioned before.
Heck what are the best examples I can think of is the film gook. Made by a Korean guy, a TH-camr and fat. David so comedy. Well just David so now by his channel name. Now doing a podcast called the genius brain podcast.
He wants to be in a film with some popular representation of Asians and even his specific neighborhood where he grew up in. How would at least didn't want to hiring, so he did it his self. Especially since he knew the Hollywood elites are not going to do it right, they're not going to do cock representation. And according to him and his friends who have tried to do movies and TV shows before, every time they do want to play a character, the Hollywood at least want them to do a completely different accent.
His friend barquan who also has on TH-cam channel called just kidding news, try to do some Hollywood shows himself and once almost got the part to play a Chinese man since he's chinese. But he didn't want to do the part since the directors kept trying to get him to do a Korean or Vietnamese accents. Even though he's a Chinese man playing a Chinese character. he did not want to take the roll cuz they wanted him to do a Korean or Vietnamese accent.
So as far as I'm concerned whatever I would at least do try to do any sort of representation, I immediately roll my eyes way into the back of my skull cuz I already know they're going to try way too hard, or not even try it on and use a bear bear bear minimum and everybody's going to praise them for it. Like give me a break.
Again I'm not saying it shouldn't make you happy, I just find it ridiculous people find it to be disappointed, or at the very least why they would ever ever ever ever expect Rich elite people to give a f*** about us let alone give a f*** about representing us properly.
Especially when it comes to the rich elites, right next to conservatives, are the main reasons why many minority groups will continue to be oppressed and continue to be poor.
But yes, let's be happy clap our hands and give them praise that they jingle representation keys in front of us and we laughed and giggle like a bunch of little kids and we ate it up.
I'm sorry but with real world problems still going on even actual oppressive issues for minority groups, representation and media should be at the bottom of the list in my opinion.
For me that sounds truly like nothing more than a first world problem with how many people are still sucking poverty and are dying because they can't afford health care. But hoorah, somebody's Puerto Rican in the films. I feel so happy, not only if I had some healthcare. Well at least I have health care so, but my grandfather is definitely f***** in a lot of medical debt.
But hey, at least person in the film that we paid for, I'm sorry paid, I meant pirated because we don't got the money to buy it. At least the movie we pirated had a Puerto Rican in it.
Again I'm not saying you can't enjoy that, but given real world issues, that is trivial s***.

I just find it weird how we want more representation yet aren't putting enough attention to the representation our own people have created. I don't expect white people or non-blacks in general to create better representation for me than my own people. We need to put more attention on the movies, teen shows, anime, and original art of Black characters made by Black people rather than going off of things made by non-Black people.
It also seems a bit lazy when anyone of any race makes the character a different race to make them more "relatable" rather than creating a unique, original character who is POC. I have seen some beautiful art and even non-professional art that are unique POC. Seriously, where are the Black characters that people put hours of time and effort into creating with written background information and everything? I don't see much of it, and that's what I want to see, not coloring the skin of existing Anime and cartoon characters dark. It's just a facepalm and sigh type of thing. It's not exciting or motivating for Black Artists like me.
There's nothing wrong per se with coloring a character any type of way, white, black, asian, etc, but as a Black person, coloring them brown it's not ideal representation. I still see a Black Midoriya Izuku the same way he was when he wasn't edited, not as a Black Person with the Black experience, and that's why I wish people wouldn't default to editing characters dark and just draw their own dark person.
We need to focus on supporting original Black artists rather than edits. Again, I don't think it's wrong, but how are we going to get representation if we aren't giving a voice to the people who actually bust their ass for it? Not to mention they face tougher backlash and harsher judgement, but we aren' t doing enough to protect them and help them feel safe on the platforms. Black Artists who hope to make their own animated shows or movies could do great things for the community yet tend to be swept under the rug.
Take the guy who created Cannon Busters, for example. Not a lot of Black people even watched Cannon Busters despite Cannon Busters being created by a Black man. Michiko To Hatchin. Xogenasys. All unpopular Anime despite them having loads of representation for Black people. I'm not sure Xogenasys is even out yet but there certainly isn't hype for it. I don't understand it at all. You make a phenomenal point and really verbalized the sentiment I was feeling about the edits. They are fantastic, but they ultimately just bring attention back to the source material that already isn't doing much for representation instead of supporting independent Black creators for their own work which would very much lead to more representation indeed. I feel like this is kind of connected to algorithm shenanigans, too because the algorithm simply favors fanart and in its eyes any engagement is good even if it's awful people saying awful things. Original character art isn't nearly as popular as fanart in general and Black OCs are even less so as a result, so Black creators end up having to reimagine characters in the hopes that someone will like their work and will give them a follow; but usually people just ♥the edit, think they are being supportive, and move on because of just how much art is out there in general. You're right. It's going to take deliberate work from individuals and choices they make to go to an artist's profile, see their other work, and support them and their OCs.

I’m a white teenage artist/author/comic book writer and like all my characters used to be white and then I thought… is there a reason these characters are white? Frankly, there wasn’t. Most of those stories were set in a universe where racism just wasn’t a thing. So I made most of them into POC. I’m talking East Asian, Latin American, African, African American, Indian, Native American, basically none of them were white anymore. It also gave me ways to expand their character. I have ADD so I can’t focus on shit but I actually sat down to research the cultures my characters came from and asked people online for their experiences and cultures and anything else they wanted to share. Now my formerly flavorless pasty flat characters are a diverse and ever-growing group of dynamic and unique people. I haven’t experienced the cultures my characters have or anything they’ve gone through because of it, being fully European-American, but I’m trying my best and I’m always learning, unlearning, tweaking their characters, and trying my best to create the best representation I can for as many people as I can. White people saying “just make your own characters if you want black characters so bad” are completely ignorant to how easy it is to tell stories for other people if you just keep an open mind and continue learning no matter what.
Btw I’m not saying all that about my diverse characters for internet points or whatever, I was just giving background info for my point. Creating diverse characters isn’t that difficult.

@@skullery5302 but don’t you see that’s the point to why colorwashing is so lazy. Japan and other Asian countries created their own representation, they didn’t beg creators to do it for them. In doing so they created a market for their characters and storytelling. The black community has yet to do the same. Why should we demand the same amount of representation from whites when we only make up 13% of population of the United States? And why do we have an entire channel supposedly dedicated to black people but no animation? Heck, we even have an entire continent of us and we still don’t invest in animation in Africa as well. If you want that representation you gotta take a page from Japan and make it yourself. What exactly makes "blackwashing" bad?
If you really understand what whitewashing was and the intentions of that you'd understand how one is okay and the other is not. The "washing" in whitewashing meant to clean dirt. Darker skin was the "dirt", the skin was stripped off of darker characters and changed to pale/white because it was UNFITTING and when there is dark characters non black people always criticize them and question why they're black and then even whitewash them because it doesn't fit what they wanna see. Black people are barely shown in any fictional media, almost every character you see is pale and there's a reason for that. Appearently it "fits" societies wants. All non black people want to see characters that look like them, and so do black people. They want to see characters that look like them that AREN'T racial stereotypes. Most black fictional characters are always racial stereotypes. "Blackwashing" is completely harmless and is hurting no one. And if you feel the need to say "Blackwashing" is bad please do not use AAVE in your vocab because it's black English and not made for you.

The more comfortable term should just be “Racebending: an act of depicting a non-black (most likely fictional) character as another race, in art or media.” (I’ve seen POC edits altogether of anime characters; and that term is always open to change) I feel like the edits are very common with anime characters, especially considering how popular it is. Reaching to many fans of color, it's reasonable to see people/artists make edits interpreting the race as another, including the fact that black (really POC) people are lacking from anime characters. That being said, anime characters being Japanese, (asian altogether) drawn with ethnic features can be at least brought up in this case.
This isn’t too related, but coming from a very light Filipino, I definitely understand both cases. The first time I came across adorable fanart drawing anime characters as Japanese, it was also a very cool experience to see. Like eye shapes included, all that. Anime characters are already asian from the start, thinking that their white is just… what?? And the happy experience can be for everyone, black anime edits of characters can make black people just happy, as long as “Edit > Original” or “fixing” mindset is not there, then feel free dude. And asians features are not explicitly noticeable in a lot of characters; really just names or cultural relations. But don’t be ignorant and believe that pale skin = white; like obviously Asian complexions come in a whole spectrum; !! It’s also in body types and facial features; heavy beauty standards just change that up; News flash, people can be tan and/or mixed!! Wow!! Half my life and still, Titas call me white or pale because Filipinos are commonly tan, surprise!! This is more of a rant, coming from someone Asian; but yeah simpler saying, racebending is perfectly okay.

From black to white, Asian to black…etc. it’s still, at the end of the day, changing the race of a character. Again, intentions are REALLY important here. But I don’t think changing the race of a character just cuz is a valid reason. While wanting more dark skinned characters representation from a country with barely any dark skinned people is just forced, and people will notice it. I have some aspects to touch on this as a Japanese person. I mean no disrespect, but this is my perspective on it.
What I say only pertains to race-bending a character, not any of that other jazz like drawing yourself as your favorite anime character or that stupid “it goes both ways” stuff.
Alright, anyway, my initial reaction to the first black version of a character I had ever seen was just general, “Man the internet is weird,” type of stuff. I could get how someone would get the shower thought, “I wonder what ____ would look like if they were black,” and make it happen, so I didn’t bother myself much with it. Then I felt the particular discomfort when I’d see people take an Asian character and make them black.
Particularly, in the comments I’d see people saying, “It looks better this way.” Of course, this is a retaliation against white people, but the character isn’t white. They’re Asian. Seeing it over and over again, “They look better this way,” would just make me feel really gross as an Asian person.
Maybe it’s from this, but I just don’t really like race-bending characters in general, even if they were originally white. Of course, I’m not implying that this is “oppressing white people” or that “white people are becoming oppressed” but I feel there are better ways to express your pride that doesn’t actively put the people around you in an uncomfortable position. And I don’t mean “You’re waving it around for everyone to see!” I mean, I feel involved in this in a way that I really, really don’t like. I don’t like people saying that an Asian character looks better black just because of their own ideals and comforts.
The reasonings behind race-bending make sense and are *valid* (I imagined that in an echoey voice) but I dunno if that just makes it in itself alright.
Anyway, that’s it. You can let me know if I’m a dumbass or not, it’s cool.

I agree with you on this, I'm not Japanese like you are but I'm a mix between European and SE Asian. It's honestly iffy if anyone racebends anyone in any way - especially if they are a POC. I get it with characters like Miku, since there isn't any specific canon race to her at all so you can do whatever you want to her, but if they're claiming that Asian characters, who are already underrepresented in western media (almost always being the "smart" one) look better as another race, it's just really weird. I get it if they're white or have no race in the first place and they get raceswapped, but I don't like any other race being swapped.

I feel as if people tend to forget seeing a character with either a different body type or a different skin tone as a separate take rather they they are ruining the "canon" of that whole character's existence, however, the point of an AU is that it's meant to be different from canon and That's what I love most about AUs, it can show the creativity of the person making it.

Before the slave trade “race” wasn’t a thing. People just identified themselves with their nationality. The term white was originally just meant for those few European nationalities before expanding to slowly include the rest of European nationalities like the Irish, Italian, and Slavs. Nowadays even some light skinned middle eastern and Indian people are considered white. But you know who won’t be included? Black people. The white identity was solely created to place certain people above black people.
