    Interesting blend. I went with a 007/777 blend but I'm in MD and it's worked great for me. Very dense and has this far survived our hot and very humid summers. Had some brown patch year one but I switched to a combination of fungicides and haven't had another issue.

      Jeff I bet that blend looks great! What is your fungicide combination and how often do you apply it?

    • @chosen1one930
      @chosen1one930 ปีที่แล้ว

      His Fescue seed idea is absolutely horrible. No golf course does that, we fill the divot with sand and within one to two weeks the divot is filled in naturally, bentgrass creeps fast newer cultivars are amazing.

    • @chosen1one930
      @chosen1one930 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well of course, do you not understand what 007 and 777 are? These are newer cultivars called super bents, most newer bentgrass cultivars grow vertical and horizontal with stolens under the ground like bermuda almost but slightly different. Why woukd you grow bentgrass when you could have zoysia that stays green year round? The new ultra dwarfed zoysia cultivars are a beast, far less input, less fertilizer, less fungicide, less water and stays green way below 32. It's been used as far north as Chicago. Golf courses are already switching the greens to these zoysia grasses, better playing surface than bermuda and bentgrass most of the time. I've playing around with a small plot at the country club I'm superintendent at in Virginia, I gave it zero fungicide for 3 months, removed the dew, cut at .1000 and I only observed a small amount of dollar spot which is bound to happen with no fungicide cut at that height

    How often are you adjusting your mow height since your using the same mower for your putting green. I’m assuming daily?

    • @ReelTurf
      @ReelTurf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not as often as you would expect. Like everyone else, life is busy. By keeping plant growth regulator on the turf I generally would mow the green twice per week sometimes three during the growing season. I usually only mowed the Bermuda on the weekend. All that to say, I only adjusted the height twice each week really. Although I have always had the dream of having a 14 blade cutting head with the groomer (verticutter) blade in for the green set to the proper height of cut and a second cutting head with an 11 blade reel set to a separate height for the Bermuda. Then I could just swap cutting heads. That would be simple. Changing the height isn’t too bad but it can be frustrating when you’re in a hurry to get a quick mow in late at night. I often had to plan ahead.

      @@ReelTurf thanks for the response, I’m also using a Toro greensmaster and wanted to use part of my turf as a putting green. I just ordered the PGR you recommended in your other video. I’ll probably follow your same mow cycle for now unless I come across an additional mower. Thanks for the info, and all your informative videos.

    I live in Gulf Breeze Fl, Pensacola Area and I’m glad to see a Texas having success growing Bent. That bald spot you have you need to put down some black kow because I think you stripped macro and micros from your medium. Even if you add it to your dirt it is not holding it. Just my opinion.

    • @ReelTurf
      @ReelTurf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip! Those bald spots are just dog spots I deal with throughout the year. They take some time to grow out but they eventually go away. I tend to stick to a diligent fertilizer program that adds macro and micros back in with each application. It’s just so hot here that it takes a good while for those spots to heal. No doubt that black kow can be beneficial. It’s pricey but good stuff for sure! Do you have bentgrass? What type?

    ReelTurf, I have been looking for a channel like this for a few months now. I am buying a house with an established bentgrass lawn (live in the Chicago - area). I drove past the house today and notice there are white flower-like weeds everywhere. I will try to identify the weed and see if Fertilome addresses them. I will definitely have some questions for you as I'm considering cutting down to have a putting green. Thanks!

    Chewings fescue doesn’t have runners and has a much finer leaf texture

    • @ReelTurf
      @ReelTurf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re correct about that. I technically shouldn’t have called those “runners.” What I was showing in this video is what chewings looks like grown out 8”-10” flat on the ground. It looks like a runner although it’s not technically a runner. That long leaf texture is the result of plant growth regulator and the mower constantly rolling it over. You are 100% correct about the features of chewings.

    Hey I’m in Southern New Jersey and I just ordered creeping bentgrass, got the shape of my green down to the soil and got rid of all roots now I add sand, starter fertilizer and then seed in a few weeks? I just can’t find a good total guide can anyone help me?

    • @ReelTurf
      @ReelTurf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Nathan! What type of Bentgrass did you go with? I would suggest you spread out the sand over the surface first and lightly till it in. Save some sand or get more for light top dressing after your seed germinates. I feel that my green would have been better if I had tilled some sand into the soil profile. After all we’re not building USGA greens in our backyard. I think tilling in the sand will help your root zone, root growth, and allow for better drainage down the road. Once you till that in, reshape the green to how you want it. Don’t be afraid to add some contours to the surface. Putting is a lot more enjoyable that way. Use a leveling rake if you have one. A cheap o’ wire leaf rake and a push broom with light bristles also works out pretty well. Lastly spread your seed evenly and thoroughly. It’s way easier to get it right the first time than it is to try filling in bare spots down the road. Don’t get me wrong- you’ll have some bare spots and it’s ok. Lightly rake in the seed and roll it several times. Then put a heavy dose of starter fertilizer down. Water at 7, 11, 3, 7 for about 2 weeks. Keep it moist but don’t drown it and don’t over water to the point that seed starts washing away. Be smart about it! After one week your eyes will start playing tricks on you and you’ll think is that green stuff coming up? Could it be? So then you convince yourself that it is and the excitement begins! This is key- after one week start spoon feeding starter fert by hand every 3 days. Continue until you have 90% coverage. After two weeks you can start slowly backing the water cycle down. When the grass is about 1” start mowing it very carefully. After about a month if you’re having good success start doing light top dressing applications every couple of weeks. You’ll start to really see the putting surface start to become the real deal during this time. It’s an exciting experience! If you want more help along the way hit me up at info@reelturf.com. I’ll be happy to show you pictures and tools I used to build my green. Enjoy!

      ReelTurf dude you’re the man, gonna screenshot your reply and use it throughout my project, I really appreciate the quick, detailed feedback!... I am gonna be using creeping bent grass... another quick question, do you think if I did all work by hand; ie, rakes flat shovel.. that the ground will be tilled enough? After my green is completely dig out and to the dirt should I treat the dirt with weed killer to ensure I’m starting from scratch? I’m tearing out old crab grass and weeds in my backyard so I want the area where the putting green will eventually be to be as smooth as possible, it’s on a natural little hill and will have good break, I’m just concerned that my green will eventually be diseases or bumpy if I don’t till the soil enough, my brother and I are pretty tough, wondering if you would recommend a machine or if good ol elbow grease with shovels and rakes is good enough? Thanks again!!!!

    • @ReelTurf
      @ReelTurf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You guys are tougher than me! It can definitely be done. I would just encourage you to take your time. What I mean is slow down and take extra time to really get the debris out, mix in the sand, and work the surface to be as smooth as possible. You can topdress later but you can’t dump a ton of sand on it like you see everyone doing on the TH-cam’s to their yard to fix the problems. The putting green is a very different ball game. The more effort you put into the initial surface, the more success you’ll have. Tillers are usually very inexpensive to rent for a day. As far as weed killer goes- short answer is no. If you haven’t already dug up the area, hit it with glyphosate (the active ingredient in round up). If you have already dug it up then just go with it. Using a pre-emergent later in the process will go a long way against weeds and crabgrass. Also when you’re mowing low on a putting green you have far less issues because the leaf tissue isn’t growing out long enough to develop weeds and crabgrass. Don’t fret over weeds. Weeds are easy to treat and you can pull out crabgrass if you see it starting to develop. Don’t contaminate your soil at this point. Do not use Tenacity- another product everyone talks about using before seeding. It’s not safe to use on bentgrass. Ryegrass and bluegrass is where this is applicable.
      In regards to disease- I told you to water at 7,11,3,7 but use your common sense for your area. You probably get rain (we rarely do), fall and time change will be happening soon. You don’t want stagnant water sitting on the surface (another reason I think adding the sand is a good idea). Depending on your time frame, you should be able to get this kicked off soon and keep it maintained through fall / winter. It will be ready to start using in the spring time most likely.
      Lastly- send me a photo of what you’re working with to info@reelturf.com. I’m excited for you. Keep me updated!

    HEY!! DO I NEED DRANIGE FOR BENT GRASS?

    • @ReelTurf
      @ReelTurf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really just depends on your yard. You want to avoid any areas that will retain water. Standing water will choke bent and cause disease. I do not have drainage in my yard but I also took the time to make sure it was level and sloped properly for water to not puddle. You’re welcome to tell me more about what you’re doing and I’ll try to help out! Thanks for reaching out!

      Great video! Is your putting green 100% bentgrass or a mix? I'm doing a renovation on my backyard this year, i reel kbg in the front. I've been toying with the idea of making a small bentgrass putting green surrounded by kbg. I don't know if it's a good idea or not. Loved the video!

      So I built a green 3 years ago with 007/777 bentgrass blend. Even though I have nice natural drainage, I still installed a drainage system. The material is inexpensive, but it's a lot of work. I'm just over 1100 square feet of surface. A couple suggestions. Make sure your area is flatter than flat and smoother than smooth before seeding. Also, fungicides are critical. I had brown patch my first year and it almost wiped me out. I asked a local greens keeper and he put me into a combo of fungicides that work great. Spoon feed nitrogen at low levels the first so many months (or forever like I do) or the young turf will burn. Lots of work if you want a great surface but damn is it fun on a summer night like tonight to go putt!

    First thats not a verticutting, its a groomer, it doesnt cut into the ground. You need to get rid of that crap cultivar of bentgrass and put in something newer. 007, 777, 777xl bentgrass that grows vertical but still creeps
