Preparing and Seeding a Back Yard Putting Green

  • In this video I go through a process that any and all of you could go through to take your existing back yard grass and prepare and overseed it to start to manage a putting green. I am overseeding my existing green with bentgrass varieties 007 and Flagstick. These both perform well in turf trials in my area and were selected by Erin Hills in their fairway renovation (which I will never stop mentioning, ever).
    The seeding process is quite simple, scuff up the existing area, spread the seed, rake it in, top dress the area to get it smoother, and then water water water.
    The coming video will be the plan and how best to navigate the establishment phase for your green.
    Please like the video if you enjoyed it and leave a comment with any questions you might have. Subscribe to the channel to not miss out on how you can best establish a putting green in your own back yard.

      Think it was about 20 hours. But yes worth it. Super squishy on the fringe but pretty dry and stable on the green. Thanks.

    The best way I found to spread the bent grass seed is to mix it with sand, not a lot but it really works well. It really looks nice and really enjoy your channel.

    Hello, thx for the video. What parts are you using with the hose mounted MP sprinklers? I only see under ground applications thx

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On Amazon, or anywhere really, you can buy spikes that will let a hose pass through. Then buy a male to male adapter of the appropriate size to screw the sprinkler on top. Then daisy chain however many you can run together. Probably 3-5.

    Hi Jason thank you for your video. Just started with my back yard putting green. I'm in Merton, how do I get rid of crab grass and not damage the bent grass?

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  ปีที่แล้ว

      Would be a bit early for crabgrass assuming that's Merton Wisconsin. Admittedly I don't have a lot of experience or knowledge in killing grassy in bent. Cutting short enough tends to solve a lot of these problems.

    The work certainly is back breaking but the results are worth it. What's your height of cut on the green?

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3/8" currently. Will target 3/16" or as high as 0.2" depending on how it's doing and looking.

  • @douglasauruss

    I commented on an older putting green video but I'll say it here: How have earthworm castings been on the putting green this spring? I find them super annoying and I'm told tea seed meal (you can order from Planet Turf) drastically reduces earthworms when they're overpopulated.
    Apparently topdressing with sand discourages them too so that helps.

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've accepted them as a part of managing. Mine are quite bad and based on studies I've seen sand top dressing doesn't really make a difference. I just knock them down with my level rake and will be top dressing regularly to keep them from building up on the surface.

  • @coachliu32

    how do you keep your collar set? doesn't the creeping bent grass creep over into your other type of edge grass? Perhaps yours is PRG? Just curious how you keep it clean. Thanks so much.

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't. Rest of my backyard is marginal at best, so I'm not worried yet. Some day I'll reno the whole back, at which time I'll use mesotrione and triclopyr to keep it at bay.

    Great content! I'm in the early phases of researching how to create a putting green in my yard and I'm unsure what to do with the current grass. Do I level directly over what is already there with a soil/sand mix or do I need to get rid of the grass that is there first then level? I'm seeing a lot of good information on TH-cam but not much on starting from scratch. Any help is appreciated!

    • @JasonSeiberlich
      @JasonSeiberlich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I have another video on "everything you need to know" for a backyard putting green. Click bait title but I try to go over all considerations of having a green as efficiently as possible and what I'd done. There's also a playlist on my channel from this year, which this video is in, that talks a little more about getting started and various topics.
      I'd say sand level a section and overseed. The grass that can't make it at the desired height will just die off.

      @@JasonSeiberlich I actually watched that video, definitely the best one I've seen. I guess my question is. Will the current grass and weeds eventually make their way to the surface if I go right over top? Or will overseeding with bentgrass take over anything already there? Clearly I'm new to this.

      @@JasonSeiberlich That is super nice, jealous you have the resource super close. I am sure you are done seeding, but I had really good luck pre-germinating bent grass seed indoors. It germinated 24 hours after spreading it out. Saved some water. But either really does work. The green is looking amazing, well done!!!

      There would be peat moss in the sand. I'm only top dressing the surface, so the moisture retention at the surface really doesn't make that big of a difference

  • @chosen1one930

    You use a root mix not just sand...the rootzone is 90% sand 10% peat which hold the water but you have something crazy with clay and sand... so yea. You punch holes is should be more frequently and not so massive that's why we never go that big. You should just certi-drain and topdress
