    1000 watt inverter, 1000Watts/12V=83.33Amp. That's larger than the 50Amp fuse used on the alternator charger. Also, the wire running from the alternator to the battery if stock is 12-gauge tops. If you are needing more power upgrade it and the ground wire. You can get welding cable that 0-gauge and that will make a huge difference. Also auto zone and most part stores sale 120amp alternator. I would highly recommend upgrade to a 200 amp. I am a stereo guy. I never run stock alternators. There way to small even for a 1000Watt amp. There is also a thing called the big three. Upgrading your big threee grounds google it, It’s worth doing.

    • @scottlampe70
      @scottlampe70 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that would be 1000W output at 120V. 8.3A AC and with losses mabey 10A on the DC side.

    • @minitrucker007
      @minitrucker007 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are forgetting about the DC-AC conversion first. The power must be converted to AC from DC still before the AC process can happen. Making my math above accurate.

    Cheap is ALWAYS more expensive. Save some money and get high quality stuff, not your standard old military surplus garbage. Plenty of brands have the "surplus/military" feel you like with amazing products for a reasonable price.
    Go for brands like Snugpak (you're really gonna love their products), Nemo, Mountainsmith, Marmot, Big Agnes.

    Hey Jake do yourself a favor and upgrade your alternator and stop buying autozone crap there electronics are junk and get yourself a 200amp alt you will never have that problem again and upgrade your battery cables to 0 gauge wire

    Gotta love it when we forget to check the easy crap. The batteries on my truck would drain down to nothing in an hour just sitting. After 2 weeks of trouble shooting, tearing out the battery cables, and my hair, all it was was my seat adjuster switch getting stuck in the on position when I closed the door. The mount had broken 2 weeks prior.

We actually had plans to come to Maine for this weekend but my grandfather is in hospital trying to keep his foot... Yup Keep his foot! Diabetes..... Bad stuff..

    What's up Jake!!! I wonder if that inverter got wet in the rain and shorted, causing it to blow those fuses. 50A fuse is huge, to blow them both would take a ton of power.

    If you are using an inverter it should have it's OWN battery charged from your truck system using a BATTERY ISOLATOR to separate the two batteries from each other yet keep them charged as necessary.

    You might step up your alternator. I did a 170amp conversion on my XJ and it made a huge difference. All I had to do was a little triming on the alt bracket. Oh and to blow 2 50 amp fuses, you probably got some water in somewhere that caused a short.

  • @wickedwilly9785
    @wickedwilly9785 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jake, Power inverters are known to spike in amps when hot and more so when very humid out if it is one without a cooling Fan - Simple protection for your rig if you need to use the inverter is to add a fuse in the cable that powers the inverter. if you can't make or find one give me a yell and I will need some information on your inverter then I will make you what is needed

    I'm sure you use USB connections, you can get for around $15 cigarette lighter plugs that show battery voltage, should be around 13.7 when running, if it is mid 12s you know you have a problem before you're stuck.
    Bonus points, dying alternators do funny things, I had one go out and I didn't know it, the car was still running but battery was down, I put it in park in front of the southwest terminal and after I let my passenger out voltage was too low to unlock the neutral safety switch. I found the override and proceed to drive to a parking lot where the police would be more understanding. Half a mile down the road lights and radio came back on, engine power came back up, I drove it almost an hour to the mechanic in Fairfield where battery voltage was around 12 volts or 11.8 with the engine running, alternator wasn't putting out. Point is, I've seen a bad alternator come back and go out again, don't be afraid to keep it in mind when chasing the problem.

    Those ecms like to get rusty pins and lose their ground plane. I would inspect the terminals on the harness for corossion and if that's the problem some people solder a new ground wire to the corroded terminal. Might be worth having a second ECU and a box of fuses on hand.

    Jake, #1 rule of Automotive electrical check the fuses! Have you given any thought to adding a dual battery setup?

    Didn’t you put in a stronger alternator awhile back? With more amperage you need bigger fuses.

    Glad it was just fuses. If you see symptoms like that pop up again, along with the Jeep becoming harder to start when it gets cold (fall, winter), you may have an issue with the capacitors in the ECU/PCM. Common problem for 2.5L/4.0L Jeeps, and something to be aware of. Another symptom is you may see your volt meter showing higher and higher readings, which will lead to your battery getting cooked, as the computer regulates power output from the alternator. When the capacitors start to go bad, random things will start to happen, and can be a real pain to try and diagnose.
    I had to replace the capacitors in my YJ's ECU. Solved all kinds of issues with my engine.

    It's probably not a big enough alternator to run the inverter for a long period. Running a grinder or another tool even if it is pulling more amperage than the alternator produces will be ok because it can draw the extra current from the battery. In this case you were running to much load for too long and if the alternator can't keep up and it draws the battery down to far then you have problems. If you had a battery voltage meter you could charge until you see your battery voltage start dropping to much and then shut it off for awhile to let it charge back up and then continue charging. Another option would be a larger alternator. Sorry for the long post. Hope it helps

    Jake by plugging in that Kodiak power pack you were running an inverter on an inverter. Which is why you had readings all over the place. I can get into all the boring details but that's why you didn't have an issue with the grinder.

    Fuses blow man they are cheap consumables. I know the feeling of chasing your tail trying to find the issue it can be very frustrating. Do yourself a favor get spare fuses for every size you have. Luckily the 4.0 ones are relatively cheap and will save you on the back end from days like this. Just my two cents cast it where you want! Hope they get the tent issue squared away with you. That also had to be a pain in the neck to deal with. Keep on Jeepin on, sweet channel!
