      that's with everything mate- Toyota, Ford Ranger, D Max, Nissan all made by same factories spread across Thailand - just specs are a bit different and badging is different.

      Just a follow up!
      We went to the NT recently and hired a 4wd. To hire a compressor was going to be about 70 bucks for the duration of our trip or we could buy one from BCF for 120 bucks. Not as cheap as the XTM is sometimes but cheap enough that it made sense, then we had a compressor after wards!
      The device was good. Let us air down for those corrugated roads like out to Jim Jim falls etc. Made the drive way easier. So in that respect, very worth while.
      The thing I hate about the compressor is the gauge and tyre valve clip thing. They're terrible. But like you, I take a known accurate gauge and just deal with the sketchy clip.
      Question, do these things have a universal hose so I could replace the hose, gauge and clip with something better? I'm not too sure.
      Also, doing it solo would have been a nightmare. I had to have the GF at the front of the vehicle turning the switch on and off. I wonder if you're better off with a longer power lead of an acceptable gauge to carry 50amps so you can get the compressor closer to the wheel? The cable would have to be quite thick so might not be that practical.
      Cheers again for the vid! You helped me make the purchase!

    I bought my Kings dual Thumper 5 yrs ago for $120 and was quicker than my $400 single ARB which shite it self n ARB said it couldn't be fixed. For $50 bucks extra you could get the Juice Boss and peace of mind with warranty, but like I said I've had mine for 5 yrs and I'm happy. Great review... cheers

    Thanks for this video, whenever I’ve asked the question or seen it asked in 4x4 groups here in the UK, people seem to only be interested in telling me what the compressors are like when pumping up a single road tyre. Realistically being in the UK, I’m never going to be too far away from a petrol station with a compressor unlike you guys in Australia, but it’s still nice to know that the compressor I’m buying will be reliable

    I guess the difference between them then has more to do with longevity, which is really hard and expensive to measure. Thanks for going to the trouble of testing those. I have a thumper mk1 about three years old, light duty and is working just fine.

    Well done, really good effort, no BS and useful information.
    I run the twin ARBs but they are mounted in the car. The tank is a waste of time for tyres, not big enough volume of air for four tyres. I have mine connected to the ARB Linx so I can type in the pressure I want and it will inflate or deflate to that pressure and then stop. With four air taps on my rear bar I can do all four tyres at once.
    The Linx is an interesting accessory that's worth doing a video on.

    Would love to see a video that compares only compressors that shut off when desired PSI is met. I know the PSI on these types of units aren't always reliable & it tends to be on weaker units but it is a feature I really desire. It offers a real point of difference but I can't find too many options & I've been struggling to find decent reviews / comparisons.

    I’ve owned the portable ARB Twin Compressor for only 2 years and have used it most weekends during this time. Recently the metal hose that connects the compressor to the aluminium tank became blocked with rust and it stopped functioning. The compressor basically thought it was at pressure and wouldn’t turn on. ARB informed me the rust is due to not letting out all of the air in the tank so if you’re going to buy one of these make sure you do just that. I thought I was being careful each time, but maybe I wasn’t patient enough. I’d also recommend carrying some spare hoses with you as in my experience this was the Achilles heel. I would buy another one again.

    G'Day Mark.
    After watching this video I did some research on the Juice Boss Duel and decided on buying it.
    Due to covid19 causing some problems with couriers the guys from Auswide actually delivered it to me themselves so that I could have it for the weekend. (Can't complain about that service :-) )
    As for warranty, yes it is 5 years. They said any problems just give them a bell and they will sort it.
    They also asked where I heard about the Juice Boss so I pointed them to your review.

    Thank you! I was actually surprised that you didn't spend even more time on the similarities: I am quite sure you could swap parts between the first 4 compressors and the 2 twins, though I can imagine the Chinese supplier offering different motor options depending on how much the purchaser is willing to pay. And I am also quite sure that there is exactly one supplier for all of these compressors, excepting the ARB, of course (unless the Chinese are starting to copy each other and not just western products...). If there are different motor options and you don't want to strip the compressors down to compare, how about weighing them accurately - if you ever do another test 😛 A motor with heavier windings should be easily identifiable.

    Bought the XTM nearly a year ago, made sure it worked and only used it last weekend to top up the caravan tyres to the recommended pressure 65psi
    The hose connection to the pump leaked air (being a newbie not sure if this was normal) Took it back to BCF and they exchange it with no issues

    Juice Boss all the way,.......with 5 year warranty any failures are completely covered and you would have to have 4 failures occur outside of their 5 year warranty period before you even caught up to the ARB compressor price . I would prefer to buy a brand new Juice Boss every 5 years than end up with a 20 year old out of warranty ARB that by then has probably failed anyway...........I would still have a faster compressor and be financially better off and still have the 5 year warranty at the end of 20 years.
    Great vid by the way.....very helpful and solidified my reasoning for never spending $900 on a compressor.

    I don't know how long it's been out for, but Sherpa have essentially bolted a winch motor on a compressor, 280lpm at 20psi and still close to 140lpm at 80psi! Those are huge numbers. Might be worth seeing if you can get hold of one of them to test. Probably impractical though.

    Would love to know the impact of having the tank. Useful for powertools, but not so much for inflating tires. If the ARB has to go through the tank then that's probably what's making it a few seconds slower than the other two. Any chance you could connect the line directly to the pump and see if it makes a difference? I have an old compressor with tank and have been considering removing it.
    Thanks and keep up the great work!

    • @TasmanianOffroadAdventures
      @TasmanianOffroadAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Clarke good question! From memory it takes the compressor only a few seconds to pump up the tank. ARB loaned the compressor to me for the comparison, so unfortunately I had to give it back.

    • @rodriguez3939
      @rodriguez3939 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was using mine today and thinking about this. I turned it on before running out the hose so it started pumping at full psi as soon as it was on the valve. Then when I moved to the next tyre it keeped pumping so again I started pumping at a higher psi. In short i think the tank helps.

    Great video mate - thanks for putting in the time here. After seeing this I'm strongly considering the arb single compressor. The conveniece of having the unit mounted in the engine bay and the ARB reliability would justify the $250ish second hand cost for me. You mentioned that you have one installed in your vehicle - do you think it would compare to the other single compressors you tested in terms of fill time ? If not, I'll take a hit on convenience / size and go for the Ridge Ryder which is now available with a 6L tank for $200 on sale. Cheers

    Very informative video so it’s much appreciated. I have a Thumper Max 2 purchased from my local 4WD Supa Centre approx 6 years ago and it’s only just given up the ghost, very hit and miss from day ONE perhaps I had a faulty switch? I won’t purchase a Thumper again as I only used it perhaps half a dozen times in that 6 years with ONE trip per year and ONLY as I was coming off the beach at the end of each trip. Looking for a quality product and don’t mind spending approx $500 for something that will last 5 plus years. The ARB compressor that you mention that is hard wired to your cruiser, may I ask how much that was and which model?

    Apart from the ARB, I'm pretty sure they all come out of the same factory and just get different heatshields plus color for the "more expensive" brands. The difference in performance may just be tolerance in production, absolutely can't imagine they have different internals. I'm gonna buy a red one at italian ebay with a "mondo4x4" sticker and let you know. Looks the same in every detail

    • @TasmanianOffroadAdventures

      I doubt there is only one factory in China making these, but I don't actually know. I have pulled some of them down somewhat and the Thumper and the Juice Boss are identical. The Ridge Ryder is slightly different. Either way you are probably right - performance differences come down to individual tolerances.

    As much as I love ARB products, I know the one you are hinting at… TJM.
    I personally don’t like most TJM products compared to ARB, but hear over many reviews that their compressors are above ARB and are the very best money can buy.
    As for the Kings single and double compressors, they only have a 1 year warranty because they barely last one year due to the heat they pump out- they run so hot and fail all the time- right when you need them.
    For me, you can go cheap on many products but on an air compressor… reliability is everything.
    I’d rather save another paycheque and buy an ARB or TJM air compressor and know when I need it, it will deliver.

One even sent me a contract to sign saying that I wouldn’t say anything negative about their compressor! I agree about not cheaping out on a compressor, I’ve had bad experiences with the Thumpers. I don’t think you can go wrong with the ARB.

      Agree about the thumpers. Absolute rubbish. I was looking at importing a Viair from the USA and then Bushranger started the maxair and i bought one of the first. Still going. Got a cheap thumper twin and thought the maxair could become my back-up. First time I used the thumper it did one tyre and shortly into the second it stopped for about 15 minutes. It was about 40 degrees. Maxair has never stopped regardless of how hot it is. Years later pulled the thumper apart and had a bad solder on one of the relays. Recently purchased two Mean Mother adventurer 4 compressors and very happy. I though the remote control was just a gimmick but it is great to use. One was for the daughter but she found it too heany and as we now have a caravan decided to keep both mean mothers with maxair as a spare. Decided to compare the thumper twin with the mean mother 0 to 40 psi. It lasted a minute or so and then cut out. turning it on a few times it would only run for a few seconds then noticed a bad noise fron inside the compressor and it then got binned. Absolute rubbish and false economy. Bought the daughter an airbag man and testing that was happy with its ability. Air bag man has a three year warranty and mean mother five. A one year warranty indicates to me that they know they will have a certain failure rate. Three years in the minimum I would recommend. Bushranger also has five years.

      I was heavily favouring it as it done rather well in your first test and despite its figures on the box it performed as well as its counterparts with higher ratings. So that had me set on it.
      My concern I guess in future I may want to run 35s here and there. I have 33s now and that’s usually what I run. If I were to have 35s on they would only be on for a full day out. Otherwise my daily drivers are up to most tasks.

    If I have to choose a brand I would go and buy 2x Juice Boss Twin and still pocket half the change of buying the ARB and twice the length of warranty period. The ARB already costs 4x upfront and they can break based on experience, and yes they are rebuildable but the replacement parts and components aren't cheap and can cost as much as another Juice Boss compressor, so in reality you're never gonna get your money's worth. So yes, get 2x Juice Boss and if one fails you can send it off for replacement while have the second one as backup immediately with no gap.

    Not knowing anything about 12v air compressors I would pick the arb one. Pros are it finished in the top 3, it’s a half minute slower then the top one, it runs a hell of a lot cooler then the the top 2, cons it’s really expensive and you have less warranty. But I’m not putting anything that’s 100 degrees in my vehicle. So cool off time needs to be factored in. In that case arb takes it by a long shot in time to get back on the road.

    Another important thing to add is that the juice boss don’t post free to rural Australia- which is a fair few of us who 4wd. It’s an extra $33 for postage bringing it’s total up to $180. Which is starting to make it expensive in comparison. They also don’t post to PO BOX’s which also a lot of people in rural Australia only have as an option as the post man doesn’t come out to where we live. Just something else to put into the equation.

    • @andrewford80

      @@jeffpowell6507 They all clearly have the same heritage so a 5 year warranty doesn't really mean the device will last any longer. Just if it fails, you can then jump through hoops to get it repaired or replaced.
      So it makes you think, if they are prepared to warranty it for 5 years, they expect it to last that long under normal conditions. Therefore, the other almost identical ones will probably last just as long. Any issues are likely to be evident from the factory and present themselves very soon after buying.

      Maybe.... the JB doesn’t have a pressure switch or a quick release piece on the end of the hose. I’ve been using the new Thumper Max in my Ute and old Thumper Max in my Cruiser and both are performing flawlessly. Having said that, the extra warranty on the JB is hard to go past.

      I don’t think you’re being negative at all. With Chinese manufacturing being as large as it is I’d doubt they all come out of the same factory, but they are definitely the same design. I use most of the compressors as loaners on 4wd training courses now and 3 out of the 5 Thumper/Thumper Max compressors have died. The similar compressors of other brands are all still going. It’s a bit unimaginative, copying the same design. It would be nice if a few more companies actually designed their own, like ARB and TJM.

    • @TasmanianOffroadAdventures
      @TasmanianOffroadAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Hey mate, not sure if you watched the video? TJM have been great in supplying products and sponsoring us in events over the years however I chose not to include the new TJM compressor for a couple of reasons - firstly, it's not portable like the others on test, secondly as this test was for 35" tyres so I only included the the bigger compressors, which according to the stats on the TJM compressor would have excluded it. I could also have tested the ARB single as I have one of those on hand, but again, I only wanted to test the larger compressors. I did want to add another couple of compressors to 'the pack', but I can only test what I have. If you watch the video I do explain this. If you have the new TJM compressor I'd love to hear your thoughts as I haven't seen one up close.
