Lucky it didn’t happen when the engineer was inspecting for registration, you got this man, your the man, and we all love to see you teach us how to do ...thanks and good luck , you’ll have this repaired in no time. Peace
It's official. The Australians officially OWN the market on cool car channels on TH-cam. Between this channel, Mighty Car Mods, and Bennie's channel, no other country can compete. Well done, Australia, well done. 🤟🏻🤟🏻
@@JeroenvdWal yeah the boys at Bad Obsession Motorsports are definitely artists of their trade. Only reason I didn't include them was because they're Brits, not Aussies.
Nobody got hurt, the rest is fixable. Bad day that you have to pull that all out. On the bright side, this could be the start of a great career at Porsche racing as you're getting fast at that.
Jeff, I dropped a dizzy drive in an a series engine block. I used a bicycle brake cable to make a lasso and fed the cable down some thin copper the used in model making. That meant I could feed it in the hole lasso the end of the dizzy drive pull it tight and fish it out. It took about 10 mins. I recon it’s possible with your camera.
I really feel for you, I always seems to have a problem with oil on my builds whether it be excessive crankcase pressure or just an oil seal that is out of reach so the previous owner didn't deal with it... bugger! Thank goodness you stopped and saw it.
Oh my, I feel for you there. I'm simply rebuilding the front suspension on my Porsche (after coil snapped!) and it seems like everytime I do something I find another problem to fix - groan. Should have only taken a couple of hours! but now I'm replacing most of it! Porschepartsbyjeff then ;-)
Sorry to hear about this Jeff. Good news it was not an issue with the engine and you can fix it yourself! Too bad this is not as easy as pulling the Alferrari engine in out, you have done that a gazzilion times!
Jeff it's not an easy job to get out that thing .. but you can do it easily because you are Jeff .. you are one of most experienced and skillful people I have ever seen.. good luck.. can't wait to see the next video 👍
Sorry to see that Jeff and you are absolutely right. It’s all part of building cars! Hey if it was easy everyone would be doing it. Love watching you build. Keep up the good work.
I regret not starting a betting pool on the number of times the Ferrari engine has/will be pulled....sorry did not think the P car would follow suit. Bless you for keeping a sunny disposition about the whole thing and " as long as I'm in there" approach. You are the best
Flippin project cars! Mine is similar with the gearshift detent ball bearing having come out. To gain access it's a full box stripdown. All discovered on the shakedown first drive the day before the MOT (annual tech check) after 3 years in the garage. Mid engine car for extra swearing lol.
That’s German engineering for you! The alternatives are : plugging the hole and using a magnetic pickup from a drive shaft or gps speedo. Or drilling a suitable hole near the shaft to push it out then tapping the hole to add a new drain plug.
Jeff, I can't find the dyno video, but here are a few comments on your lack of HP 1) An Engine is an air pump, per the next comment, yours was designed as a 2.7, you changed it to a 2.8, and did nothing for air flow. 2) Per our father a Factory trained Porsche mechanic, Porsche spent a lot of time and money to optimize the motor, start with there recommendations. Even when building race engines, he stayed with factory recommendations. 3) I have a 2.8 in an 2.8 RSR clone. 92 mahles, carrera 6 cams, ported and polished, case dove tailed and built by my brother. Turns 9K, about 300 HP and gives real RSRs and updated RSRs to 3.5 all they can handle 4) Throw away your exhaust, buy a B&B and follow there recommendation, straight pipes with silencers. Our setup is at 103 dB at 9k
The gremlins strike again. PTL it didn't muck up anything else, but it's a great opportunity to check the gears 'n bearings. If for nothing else but peace of mind). Soldier Jeff. 🖖
Ouch Jeff... At least no damage done!!! Maybe consider ditching the whole cable drive and put in an electronic speedo. (one with a hall sensor - not that GPS nonsense). Anyways - hope it all gets fixed up without too much pain!
You should thank your lucky stars that it didn't end up getting sucked into the gearset and trashing your gearbox. And you should be very good at pulling/dropping engines by now anyway :-)
Hello , I would be trying a small grabber tool non magnetic , I have luck with them getting small parts out of motorcycle gearboxes , little plunger that has a expandable fingers . I would be doing everything to avoid the teardown
Was going to suggest this, you can get them at supercheap, good for getting bolts out of hard to reach placed under intake manifold etc. head would probably be a little smaller than the scope.
Absolutely. Same here. As I just posted... Now I did think that something like the elbow of a bicycle spoke, or any small hooked end tool could grab, realign and pull it out. I'd have at LEAST tried that method for an hour or so before deciding to pull the motor.
Your magnetic pickup tool needs an upgrade. Pull the weak magnet out and replace it iwth the magnets from an old hard drive. They're way more powerful that what that tool came with
Damn Jeff that's bad luck! Any chance you could retrieve the shaft through the plate covering the gear forks of the 915 with a long magnet? (the bolted cover on the bottom 915 303 023 02).... There is an acces hole leading to the 5th/rear gears compartment. That would prevent you to take the engine/trans and cover out
what about a length of thin piano wire or plain copper wire with the end looped to lasso the shaft while watching with that probe to reorientate it so you can get the magnet onto it
Well that sucks dude 😥 Glad you're being upbeat about it though and that it was a small item cos we all know how much one of those boxes are worth let alone the price in Oz 😱😱😱
That sucks Jeff. We're all sighing. I guess a good time to check all the seals on that g/box just in case. I'm wondering what happened there. Did you forget to put the c clip in? If it popped out maybe the C clip or he groove is a little worn.? Also the C clip groove might have crap in it stopping the C clip fully inserting/locking into the groove.? ... I thinking you.may need to add a new t shirt with the slogan: _Engine out AGAIN_ Seems to be a commom occurrence on your channel..🙂👍
Feel your pain, been there. Unfortunately this can be part of the shakedown period after a build. I "finished" my 67 5 years ago still in the shakedown phase LOL. You may want to check your syncro's "while you're in there".
Cap the Speedo drive off, and use a GPS Speedo? I note the port has a nice external thread for a cover... Is it a deep gearbox sump? Or will the Speedo drive pinion foul things?
Hi Jeff. Been following your build all the way through, and also the Alfarari. Love what you are doing. Sorry if I’m going over ground previously covered, but have you considered events for Harry to stretch his legs? As an Adelaide person, and a competitor in tarmac rallies, could I recommend Adelaide Rally? Many levels to choose from, all the way from the Prima Tour through to Challenge Comp, which is as far as your half cage will get you. Several steps in between, with Main Tour and Spirit Tour. Your car is well known amongst car people here in Adelaide, and would be really well received. The event itself is over several days, out from Adelaide and back each day, with some wonderful experiences, all on top of the great drive that the event creates. Mrs Jeff would be a great codriver, and it would give you both an opportunity to meet some of your SA patreons, and spread your TH-cam reach even further. Most importantly, it is a very social event, and heaps of fun. If you are tempted, let me know, & I would be more than happy to help you out with all that is involved. Cheers, Guy
Sh#t happens :) Sorry for the bad luck, but at least the speedo didn't get into any of the working parts of the transmission! After the repair, you will be a transmission specialist as well. Always a silver lining in everything.
Well that's a tad disappointing Jeff, nothing like having to do a lot of work to cure a small issue, but hey, it keeps you occupied, Harry loves having his belly tickled...
No way. It's currently sideways in the housing. Even then, a magnet wouldn't do it I don't think. Now I did think that something like the elbow of a bicycle spoke, or any small hooked end tool could grab, realign and pull it out. I'd have at LEAST tried that method for an hour or so before deciding to pull the motor.
I think for Jeff its the process, not really about actually driving. You would of thought there would of been oil everywhere on the back of the car, unless he dosent ever go over 30. Something makes me think this car will be up for sale in the near future.
Oh no 😞 I did when I was younger and learning the hard way lol I put a V4 into my mark 1 ford escort I put the wrong fly wheel into it by accident as I had a V6 fly wheel and a V4 so I had to pull the gear box out and swope it , as it was a old motor had it on the road and used for a few weeks then it died lol so I wasted my time, then put a original motor back into it , this was before you had to have it certified came into play here in New Zealand, I should of just gone with a rover v8 in it but anyway I was going to restore it but never happened 😞😞 so next time doing something easy and one project at a time, as keeped getting sidetracked 🤣

Check out our 964 wide body build, you'll hear a shout out in the next video of the flare instal and see some of your knowledge in action.. th-cam.com/video/zP3eQFa38ms/w-d-xo.html
Oh no! Thankfully not a catastrophic failure, but certainly one you didn't want! Well, you wanted to time yourself doing a full engine removal, didn't you? ;) I reckon it'll take you 48 minutes.
That was disappointing and no “yea let’s pull the engine out again”. You handled it pretty well and are making the best of the situation. At least it didn’t fall out and into something that would have broken the gearbox.
Doesn't seem like the best design for a C clip to fail, and then all of a sudden you'd need a full engine/gearbox out job. I hope there's a mod you can find to securing the speedo pin better than the original.
The joys of classic car ownership.
Lucky it didn’t happen when the engineer was inspecting for registration, you got this man, your the man, and we all love to see you teach us how to do ...thanks and good luck , you’ll have this repaired in no time. Peace
At least the speedo drive didn't drop into the gear train and smash the gearbox 🙂

Neodymium rare earth magnets are extremely strong and you can get in 8mm
I humbly suggest that you do a complete rebuild on the transaxle. I am afraid that if you fix this problem another one might pop up.

Throw some pressure on the case before you re-install. cheers.
Perhaps you change gps speedo and plug that hole same time. No more nasty wires between gearbox and speedometer.
Make a noose out of fishing line and try and hook it over the shaft.
Keep your spirit up! And think about a future trip in Tasmania with Harry while dropping the engine / gearbox.

Jeff, That is why you do shakedown driving.....
Jeff can you try moving the shaft by running a magnet on the outside of the case?

Is it not possible to attach the magnet to the boreascope?... 🤔 🙏 🤞
Maybe you can just drop the front of the transaxle enough to get the cover off to get to it?
Nope. The shifting shaft gets caught in the tunnel :(
What a bummer, oh well at least you can check the engine over while it's out. Shame you can't stick the magnet on the camera to help guide it
3:32 true but you would have had some more pretty good content 😂

I’ve been a Porsche mechanic for 30 years. I’ve never seen this type of failure.
Someone reused the clip, and likely didn’t reform it back to shape when doing so.
This was mechanic’s error.
Someone else contacted me who had the exact same issue a couple of months ago. New parts are ordered in any case ;)
She just marking her territory. 😂
The mental picture is even more funny...

Sounds a bit more like, Push 9-1-1 ))
I had the same problem. I gave up and just gave it to the local mechanic to take care of it. It cost me $900
Bugga!
Maybe leave fancy engines to the professionals!
That was disappointing and no “yea let’s pull the engine out again”. You handled it pretty well and are making the best of the situation. At least it didn’t fall out and into something that would have broken the gearbox.
To be fair, vw/porsche engines are so simple to service or pull, you end up doing it more than you expect.
This really sucks.... luckily it’s only a seal...😕 Anyway you get better at pulling the engine everytime...🤪🤪🤪
DBFD!
Lucky it only takes you an hour to pull the motor and box.
Doesn't seem like the best design for a C clip to fail, and then all of a sudden you'd need a full engine/gearbox out job. I hope there's a mod you can find to securing the speedo pin better than the original.
I could fish that out, but I'm on the other side of the planet and there's a pandemic. 🤪
Thats painful !!
