How to De Coke A 2 Stroke Engine (Carbon Clean)

  • Today we start digging deeper into the engine rebuild and start by looking at how to de-coke (carbon clean) your 2 stroke engine.
    This guide applies to most if not all engines for how to remove carbon from a 2 stroke engine. However, the engine depicted is a Hirth F36 (The younger sibling of the Solo 210) that is used for paramotoring.

    the green bit on the sponge is known as scotch brite, you can buy that on its own and works more effectively on its own.
    also before taking the piston to TDC put a layer of grease around the top of the cylinder, then bring the piston up
    when you finished you can wind the piston down and all the rubbish is in the grease and not in the rings

    I had thought there is an opening for a YT channel focused on the mechanical side of PPG. If you could bring in friends with other brands and go over each of their known issues you will have a lifetime of subjects to cover. Great content and well put together THANKS!

      Paul 4 stroke also get carbon build up which can cause valves to burn out if left to long as the valve won't seal as well to the head, hot gasses can then escape through the tiny gaps which then burn holes in the metal. However 4 stroke are a lot cleaner than the 2 stroke. So although it can happen it takes a lot longer to do so.

      Just mix aggressive chemicals together, usually seems to work 😂 I guess you’ll have to wait and see 😉 Thursday 5:30pm might give a few things away

    Will this require any timing calibration after taking the head off and manually moving the piston? I’m worried about taking off the head to clean and stuffing the whole running engine

    Great video! Is there any way to do this to an exhaust pipe without some huge source of heat??

      This is a rough way of doing it with a sealed unit. If your exhaust has bolts of rivets you'd should be able to take the wadding out of the silencer and replace it fairly easily

    First off you need more subscribers! Excellent presentation, thank you. Now I have two quick questions: 1) Me “mum” is almost 80, so I couldn’t bear the thought of stealing a sponge from her kitchen, so I nicked one from my daughter-in-law. 2) I don’t drink tea and I don’t ever plan to start, so I had a beer while doing this. Will either of these make a huge difference?

      If you’re using a beer substitute and a differently sourced sponge please ensure the sponge is kept a safe distance away from said beer. Failure to do so may result in less beer to consume. Hope this helps!

      “As a general guide, a fuel / oil ratio of 50:1 is recommended in Husqvarna products up to and including 75cc. In certain heavy use applications, models above 75cc may be run on a mix of 33:1.”

    I have a polini 190 with roughly 100 hours. It’s getting hard to start and I’m thinking of doing this! Just have to find the time when I could go without flying (seems to be never). Do you know how many hours are on your project engine? I typically run non ethanol gas which helps with carbon build up if I remember correctly. Do you know any other way you can slow the rate of build up? Or even prevent carbon from building up?

      Just be carful to not put too much transmission and acetone mix on the piston as it can run past the piston rings, I wasn’t so worried as I was taking my whole cylinder barrel off.
      I couldn’t say at all how many hours were on this engine as the guy I bought it from never flew it and it had sat for a year in his shed. To help prevent the build up of carbon you could go to town with polishing the cylinder head but don’t take off too much material and watch for the gasket mating face.

      Daniel Jones turns out my piston had slightly melted on the top. Looks like I’ll have a new piston and rings in the near future. Everything else had almost no build up. It must of had a lean mixture. Any ideas?

      Sounds like you’re lucky to have caught that before the piston detonated, could have cost you a lot more than a piston 😬 yep you’re right about the lean mixture, I have a video about reading spark plugs that may help with the situation. Essentially you’ll need to adjust your high and low idle screws however, if you bought your machine from factory or it still has a warranty you may need to refer to the engines handbook. You may also be able to call the engine makers and they’ll instruct you on the idle screws setup. There may also be someone on a forum that has the settings on a post. If all else fails I will be making a video on how to tune a carburettor in the near future, but I need the engine back together first. Hope this helps.

      Daniel Jones yes this absolutely helps. I purchased a rebuild kit just now. It’s a walbro wc-37 carb. I actually found full instructions on how to tune it up online and I will be doing that once my new piston and everything else arrives. Hopefully you are quicker at putting yours back together so I have something to refer to!

    Daniel, I watch your videos, subscribe & appreciate your info. However, I did try your Acetone & Transmission fluid on one piston top but used Easy Off oven cleaner on another. From what I experienced, I found that both cleaned about equally regards time & effect. This is not a cut to your video. Have you tried oven cleaner? Just curious & no offense intended! Thanks! The decompression port info was great to know!

      Bill Callahan hi mate, personally I haven’t tried oven cleaner but to align with what you’re saying with ATF & acetone I recently cleaned another piston using this mix however, it had nowhere near the same effect as this video. The difference was the ATF fluid! I’ll try and find the old stuff next time I need to clean off a piston and let you know if different brands make a difference.

    .... modern 2T oils have almost eliminated the need for de-coking. Standard 2T engines may get away with never needing de-coking. Old oils were a nightmare. Exhaust oil spray and drip have also almost been eliminated as new oils burn cleaner...Not sure that engine needed de-coking and not sure why the head gasket has failed like that. Possibly loose head nuts or even over rich mixture. Like the suggestion of acetone and oil for de-coking. Got a 4 stroke car engine to de-coke, so I'll give it a try.

      Agreed, newer 2T oils are much better.
      Just as a bit of background, this is an aircraft engine, something you want to be as reliable as possible. Gasket had probably failed from being reused and old. I’m not the original owner of the engine so you never know what a previous owner has done.

    That piston crown looks like it's been running a bit lean b/c there's almost no indication of fuel wash.

    Hey! This bloke says my engine is full of carbon and that I need to replace the rings and seals. Is this true? Or am I taking the piss here nate?

      The guy has probably suggested new rings and seals because if you're at the point of needing a carbon clean you've either 1. used a very high oil:fuel mix for running in or 2. Put a lot of hours on the engine and a top end rebuild would be imminent. Frankly if you've got the money to replace rings it'd be easier to do it all in one swoop than take the engine apart again a couple months down the line. If you're ever in doubt just ask the guy who's doing the work, they should be able to justify it. Hope this helps!

      @@chaunceyhulbert7264 New rings should help improve compression. How many hours has the motor done? You may need to look at tuning your carburettor also ambient temperature effects 2 strokes quite a bit.

      @@DanielJonesParamotor I'm not ositive about the motor as I just bought it second hand. But I just put a brand new racing carburetor on it. Earlier this morning I took it apart as much as I dared. And I traced the original gaskets on gasket paper And cut them out and put them on the intake And exhaust.And it started to the point I could rev it up and ride it a bit. And then promply died. But I ordered rings and seals for it and have high hopes that I'll be a 2 stroke expert by the time this is all over.

    I had a chainsaw accidentally running on half choke for a day by accidentally offsetting the choke lever while dismantsling it. Now the saw wont start at all. I was working in a cloud of smoke and the saw was running like shit. So I'm assuming I've filled it with carbon ?
