This shows how important the psychological evaluation of a crew is. If you don't strictly sort them out, you end up with a crew like the one in this movie.
that's why only a handful of people ever get chosen to be astronauts from the tens of thousands who try....it also tells us that most people are flawed and inferior in many ways, no great surprise there though...

So many sci-fi movies set in a malfunctioning spacecraft and the characters struggling to troubleshoot and repair it while under time pressure and weird things happening or some alien lifeform causing trouble. Like "Mission To Mars", "Passengers", "Event Horizon", "Wall-E", "Pandorum", "Sunshine", "Gravity", etc. So much so, it should be a sci-fi sub-genre: "spacecraft disaster survival movies."
sunshine and pandorum were awesome... ad astra, red planet, 2001, would also fit in there.

The biggest problem with this movie is where did the alien machine come from. How did it come into existance. The machine they found in the future was the exact same one they had sent back to the past. So where did it come from?
Also why did they never previously notice the writing from the past inside the bracelet thing which always would have been there too as there is only a single timeline from the past to the future?
This is what happens when you completely ignore the pitfalls of inventing stories involving time travel.

Paradoxes are inherent to time travel because it breaks causality…. You’ve got to overlook that if you ever want to enjoy a movie featuring it.
The people who notice obvious flaws like this are not who the movie is being marketed to.
But, we don't know what happens in a paradox, so to be fair there may not be a flaw in the events at all.
The sphere may have landed on the planet in ten years and then was used similarly in exploration only to wind up where it was when the virus started, because of some future pesticide or some nonsense. This discovery of the sphere might lead to it time traveling to the same spot it was found in, then this time it is found in similar circumstances, because that timeline already included the previous return with the pesticide and the same events happened in sequence, the only difference being the ability to date the materials. Then a time loop starts and it leads to the vaccine, but the people trapped in the loop are pre vaccine so it never stops looping, and the sphere brings advances with it and it self modifies to create a sentinel alien that eventually overtakes the previous population and sends probes to all other planets in all other galaxies until something similar happens there and they send a probe to us.
Convoluted? Yes. Possible? Probably not. Something anyone would want to watch? Absolutely not. So we have this movie instead

A loss of that much oxygen would increase or decrease atmospheric pressure, depending on what replaced it, to such a degree that all animal life would be dead long before we could put a bunch of psychos on a rocket to fight about it.

That thinning of the atmosphere would create a green house effect, just instead of the commonly known green house effect where CO2 traps more of the sunlight inside earths atmosphere; it's trapping of heat through vapor that comes from more sunlight hitting the planets surface?

@edmis90 If im not mistaken concerning my studies even If sunlight was trapped of through vapor as you mentioned. The temperature would still not decrease because earth itself is generating thermic energy from pressure based reactions in the core all the time. Even if this isn't as effective as solar energy It would still increase earths temperature probably slower but over time the earth would likely become a literal oven (gradually increased amounts of trapped heat that cant escape) , because It be in the state it was a few billion years ago before the first rain remember. There is no way of earth cooling down except moving away from the sun with same atmossphere like now, loss of atmossphere or something like a gigantic meteorite introducing new "material" for chemical reactions in core or on the surface...

Wait there’s a paradox that can’t be resolved. The alien sphere has no origin. They find it and take it to the past, which is how they’re able to find it in the future. It didn’t come from anything.

The sphere was created to terraform earth and colonize it by aliens, however, there was a glitch in the sphere which led to the creation of humans. Eventually, humanity finds the sphere, recreates it and accidently goes backwards in time- possibly before the sphere first arrived in the original timeline- thus causing the aliens to choose a different planet to colonize. This sphere still has the same glitch it originally had, so even though they all die and the 'alien' program executes, it still results in humanity. And that's how the infinite loop began and is maintained. Its possible if they'd managed to change the coding, it would have Not produced humans, thus breaking the cycle, but because the 'alien' programing happened, the glitch that made humans continues to happen. Its weird. Just because there's a loop doesn't mean there isn't a starting point or a stopping point. Chaos theory says eventually the loop will end.

I, too grow tired of the "crazy astronauts fight and ruin everything while trying to save humanity" movies.
Probably not...but I can't imagine being 100% sane in today's society...that's gotta suck all by itself. I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid...but I'd rather be half-crazy and not an astronaut, than be a completely sane astronaut.
Its like somebody wrote a more sensible version of prometheus.

Wouldn't it make more sense if humans created the sphere as a probe and sent it out to space and the sphere accidentally goes through a worm hole sending it back to earth before it had life on it and since the probe had microbes it jump starts life and then people in the past find it and the process repeats itself

I'm curious how they would determine that the alien artifact was 4 billion years old. I mean, if they're using some kind of carbon dating (or something like that that relies on isotope decay), then this all happening in a time loop means the artifact would be like infinitely old... right? There's no time when it was created. So any decay going on would have long ago decayed everything in the object to non-radioactive isotopes.
Plenty of stuff has half life of billion years or more. Potassium-40, uranium-238, thorium-232, lutetium-176, rhenium-187, lanthanum-138, samarium-147 and platinum-190 do. Find those and their decay products in your four billion old alloy and you're golden. Gadolinium-152 and indium 115 have trillion year half lives.

@@i_am_anandkrishna According to this video (i didnt see the actual movie) they took the alien sphere, not a copy. If they took a copy, I guess that would fix the issue. On the other hand, if you have an infinite number of loops, each time with a new copy being made... eventually you'd get enough error buildup that the thing just wont work and will stop the loop. This is really only an infinite causal loop if they always send the same thing backwards in time.

What annoys me by all those space ship movies is that the crew always has big psychological issues.
I mean nobody would sent a buch of people on a very important, very expensive mission without being sure that all of them are psychologically stable, objective and not aggressive.
It gets almost into slapstick humor...
So basically this is Prometheus and Interstellar combined.
If both of them were mediocre films that scored 3.x on the IMDb.

@@AliElBaba Interstellar is not a bad movie, but it is obviously not a good movie. It has issues left and right and was the first movie of Nolan which 1. did not feel like a Nolan movie, 2. suffered from weaknesses very uncommon from Nolan movies.
And if you dig a bit into the production of Interstellar it becomes clear why: Interstellar started as a Spielberg movie and for whatever reason Nolan did not remove Spielberg's shit but kept it, including the weak script, the absolutey retarded EMBARRASSING dialogue and so forth. Interstellar was the first major crack in the - until then- flawless career of Nolan.

@@soheil527 ...but it's a fact, though? judging by how black and boring the surface looks with this giant and hazy fog, i estimate for them to be somewhere in the archean eon where the earth's atmosphere was mostly nitrogen and methane. the archean eon was (from what i remember) entirely devoid of oxygen, and is only with the great oxidation event that the planet started getting populated with oxygen. please correct me there if i'm wrong. the earth spent most of its time just being a rock with water in it, and that's likely the period the crew finds themselves on in this movie.
