This album was so depressingly good. It honestly helped me feel good for once, even tho it sonically sounds terrifyingly hopeless and sad. The more I listen the more I love it, it’s like me sinking myself deeper into my mental health problems but it’s helping me understand what I feel
Hey Quint, I wanted to provide some context to track 13, Playing Possum. Basically Earl mixed vocals of his mother Cheryl Harris, and his father Keorapetse Kgositsile performing one of his poems. Earl had intended to play the album for his father to help mend their relationship but sadly his father died January of this year without hearing it, and that is why the album was delayed. Anyways I share your sentiments as well, great album but I hope earl is ok!!
11:30 Haha I always do that with The Mint. The way you just started listening to the album over and over again is exactly what happened with me then I became obsessed with it.
Wardell Stephen Curry II Stan Your profile pic. This album is already being seen by many as this generations Madvillainy. Or in this case, Sadvillainy.
Dude calm the fuck down, I love Earl as much as the next guy but with all the amazing projects that came out this year that’s just a stupid ass thing to say
At first listen I was hesitant to like it, though I did, but I was hella intrigued. After listening to it over and over for the last week I can easily say that this is my AOTY. It's tough to put any album over TA13OO, but if it was going to be any, it was going to be Earl's. This shit is impeccable.
Love that you listened multiple times to really get a feel for the album and understand the project and what he's saying as a whole. If you were wondering who the two people were in playing possum it is his mom and dad. A speech his mom gave at the college she is working at, and a live reading of a poem by his father
Also, I gotta just add: you're so good at understanding music, describing it in your own words, remaining cognizant of the fact that most projects will take multiple listens to fully appreciate, etc. Like, in my opinion, you 100% accurately described the tone and recurring themes of clashing emotion (most often depression, but also occasional joy and bliss and expressiveness at times). You also emphasized something really central to this project in its experimental nature, rife with some really out-there loops. I really appreciate it, and fuck with it, because it's very similar to the way I listen to and love music. This project was not the most easily digestible, especially not upon first listen, but I've come to really love it for the way it allows us to get such a good idea of Earl's state of mind as of late. And god damnit the production is unbelievable. That, and the emotion in Earl's lyrics, is what keeps me coming back to this project.
@@gordful valid. if I had to name one other record on the same level that would be it. TPAB is every bit as introspective yet it's overall scope is broader, more thematically complex and layered. I think Some Rap Songs is sonically more dynamic and unique though. It's too damn late. Should've released (or done it) in October. He better have a fuckin reason not reacting to WAVE.
