@@RimCrim63 He's talking about Dibia$e, dope producer, but my personal favorite producer in this style is Ohbliv, that dude's CRAZY with the samples and should be producing for bigger names than he's doing now, sooo underrated. Check out 'Made For This' or 'Abundance Mindset' by him. Oh and Dark Twaine is another dope producer too, his stuff is even more abstract, definitely check out his beat called 'The Shifting Trickster'.

ApexAntt brain crease refers to the folding membranes on the brain. Earl was rapping about how he's been abusing drugs which "rot" the brain. So he's basically saying goodbye to his dying brain cells from the drug consumption. This is how I think of it anyway.
I think its a triple entendre. 1. "Peace to every crease thats on your brain" Hes saying peace as in good bye here. When your clothes are wrinkled and has many creases, you iron it. Rappers sometimes refer to guns as iron. So he has the iron to your brain maybe saying hes gonna kill you or blow your mind.
This album is a masterpiece. The vulnerability, the honesty, the self awareness and clarity. How the production mirrors the never ending cycle of depression, with its infinite loops. The beats are swallowing Earl as he tries to clear his head and get peace of mind. Him trying to run and escape his pain, only to realize it’s “NOWHERE2GO”. It’s really an album of a man who watched his life fall apart before his eyes, and instead of running from this sadness and depression, come to terms with it. Acceptance, and finding peace within yourself. So simple, yet so complex and attention to details/nuances. Lyrics, production, everything was perfect. 10/10 could talk about this album forever honestly.

I think this album is freaking amazing. There's no wasted motion, everything here has a purpose. Some of the songs might feel a bit samey at times but that's not a big issue for me. Earl really did his thing here.
That production is cohesive as hell.
Earl found his core sound on this project. I always knew he had talent but wasent really a fan. After Some Rap Songs, I'm an Earl fan.

Peanut is one of the most haunting and beautiful tracks ive ever heard. As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety it sounds like those emotions in song form. And his flow and content on Loosie was in my opinion a technical masterclass. This is my AOTY

Its haunting for me specifically cause he just slowed the playing possum beat down all the way and took his father's words and flipped it to that weird draining sound at the end and middle of the track. But when his father in playing possum says "to have a home is not a favor". I bout teared up cause that goes back to tracks like Faucet "I dont know who house to call home lately". From his mom, to the island and back to bouncing around. It's just so beautiful, cause it's not a favor- it's a blessing. That's what I hear everytime that track ends. Fucking masterpiece man

This album feels more like depression with drugs and AE feels more like anxiety problems with drugs, at least to me. I literally can’t listen to AE anymore because it gives mean anxiety attack. But when I’m having an anxiety attack, that album can help me feel not alone. I feel like this album is the same with depression, along with IDLSIDGO. It just sounds different when you’re going through something than it does when you’re not

This is straight up Earl's best work, he didn't take the easy route. He could have done some generic shit but chose instead to experiment more and develop his style.
I don’t know if anyone else has said this but to me...
This whole album just sounds like depression. Having struggled with depression myself and being an artist, the short songs remind me of the feeling of struggling to create art and follow it through by making a full piece. A lot of times depression can sap all motivation and you give up half way through. But even those unfinished stream of consciousness attempts speak volumes in hindsight.
Also the drowned out vocals remind me of the inability or unwillingness to give voice to your inner feelings and allowing those feelings to slip away and go unheard. Like unconsciously avoiding the need to confront yourself.
I don’t know if anyone else relates but this album really hit me like that and listening to it on repeat has compelled me to fight through my own shit. Great album.

This album is a great modern example of a musical piece of art, like a real suite of music that all cohesively fits together beautifully and quite perfectly. This is definitely an album-listener's album. You don't just take single pieces and put it in your mixtape (I mean, you could, but this album doesn't go for that at all). And like what they said, especially Myke, this album portrays depression perfectly. This is what an album like 17 by X should have been (RIP X), in my opinion. Maybe that album is to some people, but this album, Some Rap Songs, is a sonic art piece. Even the name of the album, Some Rap Songs, adds to the art, as if he was so depressed he can't even give the album a proper name, but the name fits it so well. Beautiful album, Earl, as well as being stand-out, and very unique in this modern wave of hip-hop.

I feel like you need to relate to Earl before you can really enjoy and see what he’s doing. I remember not being the biggest fan before phases of depression and bad acid trips an all dat. But once you walk a mile in his shoes his art just changes you and you can truly appreciate his art. So I completely understand why people didn’t like it, it’s not for everyone.

Y’all definitely make these depressed and anxious artists feel much more special and comfortable in their skin, which they should be feeling already. Earl has been one of my favorites since I’ve gotten into rap. And I wish he realized how talented of a writer/rapper/producer he is. Dude is on another level of music making. Love y’all and hope all these artists that you praise thrive in life. I believe all y’all deserve prosperity and happiness with what y’all do. You AND the artists. Earl I love you, DEHH I love you. Y’all have both impacted my life in great ways.

This album is pretty different from "Doris" and "I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside".
SRS was one of the best albums of 2018 , was a pretty solid project that shows the maturity of Earl's style.
Knxwledge didn't birth that lo-fi sound he just has a good interesting take that definitely goes to Madlib and Dilla more so Madlib, The mint sounds like some shi Madlib would do.

I honestly feel the same way. Got so bored on first listen. But when I woke up the next day, I felt enticed to try again. It never really "clicked" but as I listened over the next week or so, I started it really enjoy every moment of it.

listened to earl since his first mixtape nd we were both highschool age. love to see the artist hes evolved into, he never sold out for fame and hes a great poet like his dad. earl is a very under appreciated part of hip hop and lyricism. He was better than 90% of rappers at like 16
When Myke mentioned that the repetitiveness on Red Water could be like the rumination in Earl’s mind, it made me think of all the things that are huge themes of this album and a little on the previous one-loss of a loved one, intoxication/drug use, psychosis (in this case drug induced psychosis?), insomnia and rumination-these are all key risk factors for suicide. I just was listening to the album again and on Eclipse the line “the signs say he close to the end” stuck out at me this time. Really harrowing
And they mentioned how well the project loops back into itself-again like rumination, the thoughts going over and over. Ugh this album is just crazy no words
The way I saw this album was similar to your views, however things get different near the end. By the time azucar and veins come around Earl sounds extremely at peace with his family, his circumstances, and his friends, eccentuated by lines like "peace to every crease on your brain". Playing possum is somewhat of a reconciliation with his parents, celebrating their opinions and their achievements. After his father's death everything changes on peanut, where he finds himself relapsing back into the substance abuse detailed at the beginning of the album, this time clearly harder than it was before. Riot! comes in as a bittersweet end, a time of refuge after this depressing journey while also providing hope for the future. He will riot against his mental state, he won't let himself be trapped without giving up a fight. Perfectly looping into shattered dreams, this once again shows the cyclical and erratic nature of depression, coupled with the crowded and looped beats like Myke was mentioning. Im curious to see what you guys think, there's so much to dissect with this album and I feel like I'm getting more and more out of it each time

It's interesting that so many people have had the same experience with this album. I like know where to go when I heard it about a year ago but not quite as clear audio. I actually really like the song The Mint as well. This album makes you think about it when you aren't listening to it that's why it's so amazing. This album is an emotional rollercoaster in the best way possible

Top 3 albums of this year for me
Love that y'all pointed out how the repetitive structure of the songs could be expressing how memories replay over and over while you're in that grieving/depressive mental state because that's exactly what hit me like a ton of bricks after a couple of listens. Something else that hit me was how the distortion throughout the thing especially throughout Riot and how it fades out really makes me think of how grief and longing and regret can taint memories and sort of distort them. Peanut, which I think is the dreariest-sounding track, to me sorta feeling like hitting rock bottom in the midst of a depressive episode, is juxtaposed with Riot which is more uplifting and nostalgic, and it makes me think of winding down from an episode of grieving and being left to wallowing in your own memories. The vibes of this album reminds me of the more ambient Bandcamp album "we'll all go riding on a rainbow" by The Caretaker, which centers around the idea of the mental state of Alzheimer's patients. Idk just some thoughts. I thought the bad acid-trip idea was really interesting because I didn't catch that. Damn I wasn't tryna write an essay but really, this is one of the most emotionally impactful albums I've heard in a while and I'm glad y'all gave your insight on it.
It’s weird I’m basically the same age as Earl and have been listening to him since basically beginning. Ive always related to Earl I’m similarly “dark”. I’ve had really tough year( I lost my cousin and lost my grandfather recently). I put this album on and it clicked right away.
Earl perfectly captured the emotions of depression and loss while not feeling good enough. All while watching the world crumble. This album is a true masterpiece imo.

Haven't watched the video yet but I'm really interested to see what you guys have to say about this album. For me personally on first listen I loved this shit just because of the production. Earl found his pocket on these lo-fi, sample heavy beats and I love Earl's rapping on these beats especially on the Mint and December 24. I do miss that aggressive sounding Earl on songs like Off Top where he's just spitting but this hit me after a couple listens and I love it. I wrote a comment on another video saying that to me it's like an extension of his Solace EP since on that project he really dives deep into his depression whereas on this album it seems like he's accepting his vices and questioning why he is the way he is, well that's how I see it anyway. Dope project
Daiton exactly my thoughts, tho I actually prefer this new sound over his old hard hitting stuff, just a matter of opinion tho.
My favourite DEHH moments are in the mutual respect that gets expressed whenever Myke and Modest disagree, but work towards understanding one another. I love how patient and specific the conversation becomes when everyone in the conversation is actively working to understand everybody else. Thanks for that.

Honestly, this is what I've been waiting for Earl to do for a long time. Easily his best album. Very odd production, and his best lyrics to date. And that lazy ish flow that sounds so good.

I think after this album we need to start having serious discussions on who's better, Earl or Kendrick. Putting their discography's against each other is so interesting.
I think Kendrick has a better discography, but I personally think "Some Rap Songs" is better than any of Kendrick's albums personally. TPAB is still 5/5 though.
I feel like the short tracks reflect the way motivation escapes you when you're really going through it. A lot of other artists seem to agree that it's hardest creating when you're really depressed, because it's hard to see a point. Although at the same time, when you do manage to write, it's some of the most potent shit. I guess the threshold is harder to cross over, so the stuff that does actually get through is intense.
Earl’s album is kinda like DEHH’s Channel, not alotta ppl know about it, but the ppl that do know about it knows how dope it is
Earl has said in interviews this was intentional in how he mixed his vocals to blend in with the beat.
Thank you, people keep criticizing this point about the album like it’s a mistake in production. I think if people knew it was intentional and knew the context of why he would want that effect, then they would see how dope the technique is.
The length of these songs were loosely inspired by Tierra Whack's "Whack World" where she had 15 tracks, all 1:00 a piece. Earl & Solange praised that album on their podcast "Stay Inside" and loved how she purposely made 15 cohesive tracks all one minute long yet fully got her point across in each one. I feel like he was so inspired by that that he sort of emulated that concept for this album.
Haven't heard the album, but I loved that concept Myke was talking about as far as short songs conveying scatterbrain feels with different moods and thoughts weaving in and out. Gonna have to listen
Just to let you guys know, he made only the last two songs of the album after the death of his father, every other song before them was written before his death.
And I honestly feel like that just makes this album much more powerful because we see just how broken and depressed he was prior to his fathers death. Then we to the track Peanut and you can tell from the production and his broken voice just how decimated he was. Then the last track Riot! was a sample of his Uncles song by the same name paying homage.
Adrian McCalman Very interesting take. Because this comment made me realize he never mentions his dad before the last three songs. Then Peanut just comes along is just...well apocalyptic sounding.
This is probably my favorite rap album since DAMN.
It's like damn part 2, Earl has woke up to the fact that the negros are the true children of Israel.

@Miguel Hernandez honestly I think there is a lot more going on with DAMN than most people give it credit for. I agree it's not anywhere near gkmc and tpab but DAMN is undoubtedly a culturally important album, even if it's more mainstream

I think he took some inspiration from Tierra Wack with the tracks being as short as they were. It’s impressive that they can pack this amount of quality into short projects. I wonder if this trend will continue.

This album didn’t hit me till like last month. Granted it was probably only my third listen because I was so disappointed the first couple times I heard it. But when it hit it hit hard
I kind of agree with it sounding like a bad acid trip. However, bad trips happen when you refuse to let go of your ego. This album is all about his feelings, rumination, and ego. So I agree that this album has disconnected feeling, but I would say it’s sounds more like depression mixed with opiates, Xanax, booze and anti depressants. I had to listen to this like 4 to 5 times to get it. Nice to hear all of your different interpretations. Great review fellas. I love this album.
