Gorgeous song by S&G…magical. It’s an old old old English folk song (1600). I’m not sure of the origin.
Sarah - love your great reactions and love of great music!

    One of the original lyrics from hundreds of years ago goes;
    "Love imposes impossible tasks,
But none more so than any would ask."

Here's a little background. Scarborough Fair is a centuries-old song of a person longing for a love that can never be. That was a popular song genre of the time. If you notice, each thing he requests from his lover is something that's impossible. Simon and Garfunkel took this and made it a protest of the Vietnam War by adding a second lyric line in the background like an echo. Give it a second listen and you'll get a lot more out of it. ❤

The meaning of the herbs, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme have been debated for ages and still open to debate. But, from my readings in medieval times parsley was a symbol of death & rebirth; sage, for immortality & wisdom; rosemary for remembrance; and thyme to give courage.

Quite possibly, the greatest piece of music to come out of the 20th century.
Two distinct songs, actually, woven together like a wreath of grass and flowers for the springtime..place it above your door to let all know your love and joy for the beauty of life.

Simon and Garfunkel arranged this version of the traditional, centuries-old English folk song; and combined it with Canticle as a counter melody. The result is pure magic.

I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.

For another journey into heaven, I'll recommend again Art Garfunkle's solo recording of "All I Know." Stay open with your love of music and you will discover many beautiful pieces. To lamentations like this, I will always hold up 90s alt/grunge (Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, even Tool), and modern genres like Chillwave, 80s Synthwave, and Lo-Fi/Jazz Hop. The artistry is there, you just might not find the genres to your personal taste. Jack White is another modern legend, and his associated acts are also very good.
I can't believe I almost forgot Radiohead. Every bit as talented, impressive, and experimental as the Pink Floyd catalogue, IMO.
And my other favorite, somewhat contemporary example is The Decemberists. True artists of story and sound. Their discography is quite varied, but I'd start with their early stuff. A few (such as Eli the Barrow Boy) even remind me of the caliber of Scarborough Fair.

Paul Simon had the war part of this song in his catalog in a song entitled "The Side of a Hill." S&G contrasted the gentleness and long for love of the Scarborough Fair part of the song with the war theme of "The Side of the Hill." On that very same album, they did a similar thing, contrasting the Christmas carol "Silent Night" with a broadcast of the starkness of a 6 o'clock news broadcast.

The song was about a Scottish soldier who went to war in a foreign land and knew he was going to be killed
He asks his former lover to get a piece of land to bury him. The herbs were traditionally buried with corpse and the cambric shirt was a type of seamless linen shroud used way back then
Once knowing that the song makes a bit more sense

    • @rockshot100
      @rockshot100 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

That makes sense. But why an acre for burial, especially in the sand? Don't think they could weave a seamless garment. I think he used to live there and she thwarted him so he left. How is she supposed to harvest with leather?
Now bitter and still hurt, he sends this message to mock her. As to say, you had your chance, I wish you well.
"Parsley, often associated with death and rebirth, may symbolize the longing for a fresh start or a new beginning. Sage, a symbol of wisdom, could represent an intellectual search for clarity and understanding. Rosemary, known for its healing properties, may represent the hope for healing within oneself or a relationship. Thyme, with its ties to courage and strength, could symbolize the bravery required to face challenges in love."
So, I have moved on, see it all differently, and have come to heal from it with courage.

There are songs that are very difficult to cover, this is one of them.

One of the most beautiful songs ever! And a song within a song (the generals order their soldiers to kill).

Loved your reaction to this, partly because I reacted the same way almost 60 years ago when I heard it the first time and thought it was the most beautiful sound I ever heard.

That’s sweet how you sing along. So glad you found them!

Patty-I totally agree with you. I saw them perform live back in the 90's. It was a night I'll never forget. They became popular while I was in high-school. My sister and I used to sing with the records all the time. Their voices blended so well together. Unfortunately, they no longer sing together. Try listening to the Boxer or Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Great channel.

These guys were absolute geniuses. It would be just as beautiful without instruments. Truly masters of music. Thanks for sharing

Paul Simon is really one of the greatest still living songwriters, he created timeless masterpieces. I think you should also listen to his work after the time with Art Garfunkel when he worked on world music, e.g. on his album Graceland where he played together with fantastic musicians from South Africa. So many amazing pieces on this record with this wonderful African sounds, this album is really a must!

Paul Simon picked this up from the English folk singer Martin Carthy in the ‘60s. Carthy’s version has more verses (and makes more sense), but this is truly beautiful.

Hi. I just wanted to say that it's kind of a blessing that you're just hearing this now. I've been hearing the song for years, but when I first heard it I was a kid. I had no idea what they were singing, I was just getting into the sound of it. It must be intense to understand it all as an adult when you first hear it.

    Oh Sarah
    You touch my soul
    Às a rose petal
    Brushes softly
    against my aching heart
You bring the light of pure love
That lightens the path of a long journey to find
    À reason to hope
    And a purpose
    To breathe
