my 1 year guitar progress

  • While stuck at home during the pandemic, I found myself watching countless guitar videos on TH-cam and was consequently inspired to pick up my sister's old, neglected acoustic for the first time. I knew from the start that I wanted to play electric, but I started out acoustic because that's what we had at home. My progress has been mostly self teaching, with about 2 months of (online) classical lessons in between. I definitely practiced the most and made the most progress in the first month, when I stuck with learning just 2-3 difficult finger style songs (eg. my heart will go on). I would literally just play each part over and over again until i kinda got it and could move on to next part and by the end, I basically memorized it.
Some background on my music experience: I played a bit of piano as a kid and clarinet in high school. I'm definitely not a stellar guitar student, and my practicing was quite sporadic at times especially when I got swamped with schoolwork, as you'll see in the video. Also, it's actually been over 2 years since I first started learning in 2020, but to be honest I haven't improved nearly as much this past year as I did in the first year. With that said, I'm really glad to have picked up guitar because it has become one of my favorite hobbies and something that I can play without too much pressure.

I don't understand. Why is everyone saying it's difficult? (This isn't a rhetorical question I mean I don't think it's hard) I'm not very good at guitar and I've only been playing for 2 weeks but I learned riptide by vance joy in like 6 days (including the singing) and I learned matilda by Harry styles (without the harmonics and the slide so basically most of the song was the verse) in 5 days and learned to sing at the same time
The context is that I have a small amount of experience singing and zero experience with guitar. I'm not a prodigy I just wanted to learn a song fully including the singing and I learned 2 in 2 weeks not practicing that extensively every day.

honestly, its people like you that give me a hope for my future, I look at myself a lot wondering whether I can achieve my dreams of music, and it often leads me feeling negative, but every time I come across someone that's trying as hard and has a lot of things on their mind, and things to do, stress and pressure from school, work or anything. it makes me feel like I can push through, your playing, your voice, your commitment, your dedication. everything through the hard times or easy going. you found something you can do that makes you and others happy, I think that's something everyone should get and strive for at least. thanks for the video, hope you do well in anything in life!

Depends on if you specifically practice singing + playing.
I used to think I couldn’t do it too lol. Then I tried, initially it was hard but soon it becomes second nature. Especially if you start realizing what strumming happens when singing a certain word (kind of).

Now i play on his guitar but i'll but myself one in a couple of days and will go to a (music school). for anyone watching to teach yourself an instrument like a guitar, ukulele, etc, I honestly recommend just finding an easy song you like, and memorizing it. For example, I taught myself to play the ukulele and although it was difficult at first, I can now play virtually any song. Also, memorize the most popular cords used in songs, because a lot of them will be in most songs, that way when you want to learn a new song, you don't have to memorize a bunch of new ones, because you already know them. Also following along to play-along songs helps a LOT. (this is just the way i taught myself, might not be ideal for a lot of people.

I always thought that there was something wrong with my guitar with how it makes so much buzzing sounds! But after watching the first few weeks of your progress, I realised that there was a problem in me instead. Since I barely have time for personal life I try to practice the guitar with limited time for 3 years now, but after watching this video and many others I understood that I need put space for my own life. So thank you a bunch. I'm currently in my holidays so my guitar is 3 hours away from me 😅 I'll try my best to make time for myself as much as I can and try to practice at least everyday. Also, your voice is beautiful. Its so smooth, please keep singing! :))

You are ahead of me when I was teaching myself guitar with just a chord book. It took me a year to change chords fast enough to play along with the songs I liked on records. By your finger picking I'm guessing you took lessons since your using all four of your bottom fingers. Guitar playing is great experience in your life its something you really love. It really enhances your life, and if you choose, for the rest of your life. I wish you all the best, and you're now part of the family of guitar players around the world. WELCOME!

From your first song in this video, I can feel there's so much talent already! The choices of songs and such are great, I started with just 3 chord songs, so easy compared to the range of finger picking styles and songs you've chosen! Really talented! Not to mention the singing vocals are amazing!
