  • This video introduces Ms. Hye-kyeong Han, a woman who started working for Samsung in South Korea as a healthy teenager. After 3 months, her menstrual period became irregular. After 8 months, it stopped completely. When Ms. Han asked the mostly female employees about this they said, “Half of us have this problem. Do not worry, it is completely normal.” Later, she developed strange neurological symptoms and eventually doctors found she had a brain tumor. Now she can no longer see clearly, walk by herself, or carry out the small, daily tasks needed to live independently.
Samsung never informed Ms. Han about what chemicals she was using or what effects they might have on human health.
Unfortunately, there are many like her. As of September 2016, the organization Supporters of Health and Rights of People in the Semiconductor Industry (SHARPS) has profiled 251 Samsung Electronics employees who developed a variety of diseases ranging from leukemia to brain tumors to multiple sclerosis. Of the 251 people, 90 have already died. Samsung proposed a dialogue with SHARPS about these issues in 2013. However, in 2015, the company halted the talks before resolving the issues. Ms. Han and others have conducted a 24/7 protest in front of Samsung in Seoul since October 2015 requesting a return to the dialogue.
