I can vouch for what he is preaching. In the past i used to eat healthy and workout, then i drifted my focus towards making money and working hard , i still worked out but little by little i started neglecting my diet so my weight kept bounching up and down. In the past year, with every meal i would eat, regardless of what it was, i always add a salad, some tomatoes cucumbers red onion lettuce and a little vinegar and i must say that indeed my weight has stabilized, i do have more energy but now eventho i'm heavier than i used to be (now at 88kg), i feel more agile, flexible, i don't run out of breath like i used to. So people, make small changes, add a salad, eat an apple, baby steps. Stay healthy because no-one will take care of you like yourself.
Finally someone comes in with a fresh and neutral view on foods and health. Trying to compliment all health professionals , and not argue about who’s “right” and who’s “wrong”! Awesome work Rupy- keep going 🙏
This is amazing! As a medical student, I wish my school had a culinary medicine course... in fact I may just try to help implement that during my last year. I started a TH-cam channel for my future patients and it’s focus is going to be on lifestyle change like nutrition!
I work for the Dept. of Aging & Disability in the Cape May co area of NJ. Part of this program's 'job' is to feed the needy, and elderly. my job is to bring meals to the Elderly. The first 6 months of working there, I also ate a meal. Within 6 months, I ended up gaining 20 lbs. I have since Lost that weight - but what I realized is how UNHEALTHY the food that we are serving these people, actually IS !!! It's loaded with sugars, salts, and who knows what ... under the idea that we are doing a good job for those who can't afford a meal? Honestly - not one of these people need this food. The over all expense of each meal for the County Govt. is about $11 - we ask for a $2 donation from each client. I've also figured that IF I gained 20 lbs - what is this food doing to those who are really much older than me? Honestly - IF you want to look at the WHOLE SYSTEM in which we are living - YOU might be fighting a losing battle. Our Society has become fooled into thinking that we live with a Healthy Food System - when IT is far from it....from all angles. From the Grocery Stores to Doctors - to Manufacturing companies that are marketing their Food as Healthy. Our Society is HOOKED on Sugar! WE have become mentally lazy to even research what is going on. We SIT too much, and making our Self Sick in the process. Maybe you need to Change YOUR Whole Course - and make a Radical Change to be taken seriously? Hook up with Professionals that feel the same way you do - There is Power in Numbers!

The video was very informative. As a medical doctor, I found it very enjoyable. It's important to note that many diseases are a result of unhealthy eating habits. Food can be a form of medicine, so it's crucial to be mindful of the quantity, type, and preparation of the food we consume.

What good does promoting healthy eating really do. Some 10% are eating properly anyway and need not preaching. Rest 50-60% are junk food addicts and wont change a thing and rest 30% are on food stamps and starving and eat what they can scavenge. So preaching on diet exercise is wasted effort. Find a study where advice on healthy food and exercise made a real difference in a community over ten years. There are some examples of 5-6 years long benefits but they vanish as people resort to their older habits. I fails all the time.
I greatly appreciate the argument which Dr. Aujla brings up through the viewpoint of preventative medicine. The way he speaks towards food as a preventative source against cardiovascular disease, and specific inflammatory syndromes which we as a medical community see time and time again is a necessary message for our patient population. While his point is notable and necessary for so many people to hear in this medicine first, lifestyle change later culture, we need to consider justice for those in communities which may not have the luxury of having these foods nearby. Although Dr. Aujla brings up teaching his patients how to cook and shape their diets within a NHS appointment, you still need to consider the constraints placed on certain communities. In many low-income communities, grocery stores may not be found nearby. On top of that, research has shown that in these same communities, the display of junk foods may be marketed more heavily than that of certain healthy foods.1 With this brought up, I don’t want to take away from what Dr. Aujla is saying - a healthy diet should be one of the main tools practitioners use to keep patients healthy and we should be practicing proactive medicine rather than reactive medicine. But, in order to do so, we must first consider the patient populations we work with and seek justice for all our patient populations. This means making sure that these patients have equal access to food and an equal playing field (no junk food marketing campaigns, no having to travel at great lengths, etc.). Currently 18 and ill be taking up bachelors in dietetics in few months ...hopefully ill be able to bring awareness and help many to know how important of a role food plays in our lives ❤... There's a lot of misconception about diet and some people see it as a "one size fits all" thing , which is not the case , and from my experience , ive seen people ignore healthy foods and just eat absolutely anything....that might lead to harmfull condiitions years later , well i guess not many are aware of how complex food really can be , and in this day and age there's a rise in ultra processed food and industries keep manufacturing low nutrition eatables I believe everyone does need to know and be more aware that we need to eat carefully and prevention is better than cure , Anyways this was just my opinion ♡. and id like to read others opinions too why not
Well said: having spent some time in medical care, I became aware that it would be quite easy to go down with scurvy in an NHS hospital. Having asked someone to bring me some fruit, I was advised not to eat a grapefruit, it would interfere with a pill I had been prescribed. When I took a look at what this pill was, I noted its long list of side-effects - likely reaction to the toxins contained therein. Contraindications for grapefruit: nil. I ate the grapefruit and not the pill. After I got home - this was a heart triple by-pass surgery - I dumped all the medication they'd given me a week later and felt better the very next day. That was a couple of years ago. I haven't touched a pill since, nor any junk food. I'm 72, fit and well.

We are so evolved and so technologically advanced but then we’re only just recently learning and understanding the importance of something so basic like the fact that we should eat properly to be well. Then our ancestors were better than us, because they did that, they may not have been so advanced as us but they did it right. We are so far removed by what being human means that is very scary. Hopefully we can go back to basics.

Brilliant, great presentation and tremendous information on eating healthy. Following a carotid artery blockage followed by a stroke and resulting Carotid endarterectomy in 2018 I decided to find out more about diet and healthy eating. Since then I have lost 3.5 stone, eat a mostly plant based diet, control alcohol intake to 10 units per week and follow the brilliant advice of a lot of your guests on the Doctors Kitchen like Pro Tim Spector & Pro Robert Thomas. Thank you very much Dr Rupy.

Excellent and such an important message. I hope the Coronavirus crisis will persuade politicians of the real need to support a major change in our food systems. We need to reempower farmers and growers, reduce the role of multinational conglomerates whose interventions generally raise prices while lowering nutritional value, and ensure that everyone, whatever their income, has access to tasty and nutritious food. Not easy but we have to try.
You bring up an excellent point! It is true that especially during the pandemic- worsening food desserts, difficulties with supply chain management, and more difficulties with food access. It has also been documented that certain cultures/nations, largely due to their diet, have increased or decreased longevity. Perhaps this warrants government officials at various levels to do full research or enact legislation to ensure proper balanced nutrition for school lunches, or more full encompassing nutrition within public schools and even medical schools. Promoting dietitians and nutritionists. I agree that food is the body's fuel and can make a huge impact and be part of the healing process.

I had a terrible struggle to get a blood test on the NHS my gp wasn't too happy to send me for a cholesterol check its one thing trying to stay healthy by healthy eating and exercise, another to establish a base line when the NHS is not geared towards investing in prevention
I saw an ad here in TH-cam of a local department store offering discountts to those who will present a vaccination card.? Why arent they offering big discounts to their customers who are buying 50% or more of vegetables, fruits and other healthy products of their total purchases instead.? They know for a fact that prevention is better than solution or cure. Ive noticed in some supermarkets, they even price vegetables and fruits way too high than unhealthy products. If these people really are concern, they should promote and support healthy lifestyle because I think this is a wake up call to all of us, we need to change our ways of living...we need to eat healthy.
They problem is that they really aren't concerned about other's health. They are concerned with making a profit. I honestly do not find that unhealthy food is cheaper. I look at a pie or cake & think, I can buy 2 pounds of berries for what that cost!

What's considered healthy foods, seem to change every few years. Experts swear each time, THIS diet is the healthiest. I'm waiting for the one that says beer and cigarettes, ice cream and cake is the one where you'll live to be 150 years old.
There are a couple of statements that are wrong, if you eat a diet high in vegetables containing oxalates you will have kidney problems, the same goes for high carbohydrates plant foods.
That's true of eating/ingesting ANYthing in high doses: too much of anything can kill you, even water. When he said (something along the lines of) try and add extra fruit or vegetables to every meal, he didn't say stick to the same fruit or vegetable. Everything in moderation :)

Very informative and well articulated. Being a recent graduate of Bristol University and competing in the Boxing team, my nutritional diet allowed me to compete at an optimal level whilst balancing my final year workload. The ideas are similar to Dr Joel Fuhrman. Food is medicine!

What was shocking when I went to the UK was the lack of fresh foods on the shelves.
I had a terrible struggle to get a blood test on the NHS my gp wasn't too happy to send me for a cholesterol check its one thing trying to stay healthy by healthy eating and exercise, another to establish a base line when the NHS is not geared towards investing in prevention

I saw an ad here in TH-cam of a local department store offering discountts to those who will present a vaccination card.? Why arent they offering big discounts to their customers who are buying 50% or more of vegetables, fruits and other healthy products of their total purchases instead.? They know for a fact that prevention is better than solution or cure.
Ive noticed in some supermarkets, they even price vegetables and fruits way too high than unhealthy products. If these people really are concern, they should promote and support healthy lifestyle because I think this is a wake up call to all of us, we need to change our ways of living...we need to eat healthy.
They problem is that they really aren't concerned about other's health. They are concerned with making a profit. I honestly do not find that unhealthy food is cheaper. I look at a pie or cake & think, I can buy 2 pounds of berries for what that cost!

it always makes me wonder why food in hospitals is such a poor quality?
What's considered healthy foods, seem to change every few years. Experts swear each time, THIS diet is the healthiest. I'm waiting for the one that says beer and cigarettes, ice cream and cake is the one where you'll live to be 150 years old.

There are a couple of statements that are wrong, if you eat a diet high in vegetables containing oxalates you will have kidney problems, the same goes for high carbohydrates plant foods.
That's true of eating/ingesting ANYthing in high doses: too much of anything can kill you, even water. When he said (something along the lines of) try and add extra fruit or vegetables to every meal, he didn't say stick to the same fruit or vegetable. Everything in moderation :)
I've been in nephrology over 30 years. That is not true.
